My current character would have said minotaurs almost any other time in his life, but he's gotten over that now. Time can make wounds deeper, or it can make things irrelevant. He's seen too much over the years of war and just wants the world to be saved to be over so he can stop dying every few months and go live peaceful somewhere far away. Maybe commune with his deity, raise his child, get away from the chaos of the world. The only things he could eliminate that would actually help the war are already undead, so the scroll is worthless. After staring at the scroll for a few moments, he would drop it in the sea and watch it disintegrate.

well, everyone has their own experiences, but we had a character run a demon on the rise. Ancient and devious, he had long since moved from the truly evil to the insanity being alone with your thoughts for millennia causes. he was CN character that, due to the makeup of the artifact he was trapped in, had discerned the key to magic and what would happen when he was released. it created an epiphany which led to self retrospect and all kinds of shit. Good backstory without making it cringy (we were running high level characters in a rp-based advancement game).
after getting to know the player some more, turns out he was one of those young prodigies that finished college by the age of 18 and he went batshit crazy, disappeared and ended up in my town. the kid was using it as a metaphor for all the fucked up shit he went through and used it as a therapy model.
Ended up that, over the course of months, while still struggling with his nature (the character), he managed to find balance in focusing on his works of power and actively worked to avoid his fate of basically destroying the world. he ended up sacrificing himself to save a friend and in that moment redeemed himself sufficiently that one of the gods he had made deals with intervened and made him one of his chosen, basically reforging his soul with good aligned energy instead of evil.
