If there was a harem anime about weapons, Spear-kun would be the protagonist. Axe-chan would be best girl, Club-chan would be the shy one, and Sword-chan would be the bland one who wins in the canon route of the VN.

He's simultaneously wrong and right about spears. He makes some very good and accurate arguments for why you should hold your spear underarm, he just misses one very important fact: The reason Greek Hoplites held their spears overarm is because when you're in a formation as dense as a Greek Phalanx, there is no fucking room to use your spear underarm. That's why the Greeks fought in phalanx with their spears overarm, there was literally no other way to fight in such a tight shield wall. That's why the Dory had a counterweight at the back end, precisely so that the centre of balance would be further back from the middle, lessening the loss of reach from the overarm stance.

When fighting in looser formations, or in a general melee, the Greeks and everyone else on the planet used their spears underarm for all the reasons he stated. The overarm fighting style is particularly to fighting in a specific formation that simply does not allow effective underarm fighting. So in short, he's right that underarm is better overall, but wrong that nobody fought overarm because he does not understand how the phalanx worked.

This is a more legitimate criticism. It feels like he often times selects contexts and situations that fit his narrative, and leave the others out of the video. I would enjoy his videos more if he wasn't trying so hard to make a point that he left out relevant information.

I agree with Lindybeige except for two-weapon fighting.

As someone who has fought off attacks (black, Mexican) twice with two-weapon fighting IRL, I think Lindy doesn't understand the effectiveness in the image you portray when fighting with two weapons.

That's the game-changer, if you ask me.

Not if you stab them in the dick.

Only if you stab them in the neck.

In reality, while it's probably better to fight overarm, underhand is still entirely lethal when used properly (and your still really needed training to properly use a spear to begin with).

It's kind of important to also mention that a huge reason the Romans were so successful militarily is because of their almost universal seizing of the initiative and never choosing to fight on the defensive, the flexibility of the Maniple, their "disciplined savagery" where they could leash their aggression under a yoke of discipline yet unleash that ferocity upon command, and their huge emphasis on logistics and the management of the baggage train

Also the fact that they really only learned this after Hannibal kicked their ass for a while/spoiler]
>>
>>51636527
If you don't have a point about your spear, it's just a stick.

It's not like they were like Russia that's known for just throwing warm bodies at the enemy until both stop moving. Early Rome's manpower came from its conscription (and later volunteers after the Marian reforms, but that's already the first crack in the system immho famalam (in my most humble opinion kinsman)) and that was tolerated because (or instilled in the Romans, chicken or egg dillemma) Rome had great patriotism. You could not hold a public office without serving in the military, and stabbing a barbarian or two in the neck was something a Roman just did.

He's actually extremely well informed. He's pretty desperate for moar views though so does that sort of thing to draw in crowds and the numbers speak for themselves.

He's the best sword channel on youtube. I don't think that's a contentious statement. He's the only person in that genre of youtubers i would ever call a genuine expert and being an antique sword dealer he always has good stuff to show on his videos.

>>

>he is just a simple guy who actually knows what he is talking about which is the reason he doesn't need all the fanfare.
Except no, other people with REAL knowledge made videos that corrected his asspull reasoning.

Besides, the majority of his videos are about one single topic:

>real life =/= video games and PnP games

What a revelation!

Several of his videos where talks about this topic clearly demonstrates that he has no clue about how such games work and how they are supposed to be played. Literally all of his arguments are "HURR DURR this isn't how it works in real life." His mind simply cannot grasp the concept of "abstraction" that is required for a game that is based on numbers and numerical dice rolls. Plus when he plays he treats even his fellow players as enemies, he actively lies to them both in character and out of character.

He is a tunnel visioned idiot that talks like all his viewers are like 4 years old children. Which, mind you, is probably not far from reality.

Pikes were used against infantry all the time. The terms "Bad war" and "Push of pike" both refer to what happens when two opposing pike blocs meet head on.

The Swiss made pikes their primary offensive arm, and became the most feared mercenaries in Europe doing so.

Hellenistic-era warfare was built around the pike; at first to pin units in place while the cavalry flanked but their role grew so that the pikes were the primary attacking force. Look at any of the Roman campaigns against Macedonia or Epirus for battles mainly fought by pikes against infantry.

Pikes were used to deter cavalry, especially in the Pike&Shot era but they were more than capable of meeting other infantry and winning. In flat terrain they can make mince-meat of the oppostion with that insane reach advantage, the problems are when the terrain disrupts the formation or if they get flanked.

Two very good reasons as to why they were not:
Weight and bulk.
Fascines did it better under siege conditions. In field battles they have no place.

Because mobility is more important than protection from a single angle.
You drive those metal pavises into the ground, and the enemy infantry just retreats outside of your firing range and relocates to your flank, where your shields will only get in the way of you reconfiguring your fire lines. Or even worse, you eat a cavalry strike from the side.
Napoleonic warfare wasn't static as hollywood would have you believe, the relatively short range of effective fire meant that maneuvering was key to winning.

[A POINT ABOUT CHESS]

A few days ago I was playing a game of chess, great game everyone loves it. So I sat down with my mate and he asked me "black or white?"
"What do you mean, black or white?"
"Do you want to play as the black pieces or the white pieces"
"Ah, of course..... why does it matter?"
"Well, the white pieces go first"
The white pieces go first? That's an enormous advantage for the white player. And why does white even go first? This is not how historical battles happened. You didn't just have two armies marching to the field and deciding "alright, your colors are brighter. You can go first". If that were the case everyone would be wearing white. What I instead propose is that you make your first move at the same time, and then simply move all the pieces as fast as you can. It's a lot more realistic and makes a lot more sense.

[The French had a lot of white flags during the Hundred Years War, didn't really help them in the end]

I've owned both bollock and rondel daggers, but the bollock dagger attracted the attention of women in a more obvious, positive manner. And it's a conversation starter, gotta be a whole bunch of times I got asked 'why does your knife have balls?' or words to the effect of that. They also like codpieces, especially ones that look like dicks, not just bulges.

And that's why bollock daggers are better, fightan qualities be damned.

Since the Lloyd-threads will never cease, so long as it nets Lloyd 1 single subscriber on youtube, I have decided to begin posting excerpts from his old website, every time I see one of these.

This is one of Lloyds poems.
They can all be found at: http://www.lloydianaspects.co.uk/poetry/poems.html

AN INCOMPLETE LIFE: By Lloyd.

He first saw the sun when it rose over the bell of a French horn.
Tuning up for school orchestra, she had attempted an F sharp.
The result put approximation to shame and resounded off wood-block floors.
She felt his levelled gaze and turned, and he beheld the dawn.
Embarrassment sent scattering by the humour in wrinkled eyes,
Her beaming face seared the lad who left by the awkward flappy doors.
>>
>>51674196
/2

Tuesdays and Thursdays he would go to see the back of her head,
To feel the infinite charm of that messy hair held up with an old HB,
To slide his trombone close, toying as the timpanis pounded, but never to touch.
Then there was the day when she said "Shall we go for a cup of tea?" She led.
That dismal cafe remains a beacon in his passing life.
To Aberdeen's stone academe she went.
How much did he miss her?
Much.

The telephone is a marvel, but it cannot compete
With the Martins and Davids who are actually there,
And the lad had no right to demand that they meet,
The lad had no right to demand that she care.
>>
>>51674200
/3
So he went to uni too, but not to Aberdeen,
Met Charlottes and Megans, danced to "Come on Eileen",
But the Megans and Charlottes all stood in the shade
Of the shadow that dawn over French horn had made.
His brain had been altered and now set in its ways.
Love was defined, love set in stone.
Love involved teas and HBs and those things alone
Oh - apart from heartache, frustration, and an unringing 'phone.

Winter set in. This one was to last
For the lad, then the man, mind nailed to the past.
He might glimpse the sun, perhaps once a year,
But he understood, had knowledge, not fear
That the shadow was with him, would be every hour,
And his life would be simple: bitter and sour.
He would plod through the tunnel, eat, sleep, and shit,
Bear in mind he was British, and show some true grit.
He harboured no hatred, they would always be friends.
She now lives with another, and this story now ends.

BUT,
>>
>>51674207
/4
Tunnels have two ends, and both let in light.
For our hero, now ageing, remembers the night
His heart proved adaptive, could love more than one.
For there, in the library, shone a second sun.

Introduction was easy - she was reading his favourite book.
In short time, despite their whispers, they drew officious glowers,
And adjourned to the cafe for coffee
(Coffee? Can coffee work? Yes, coffee is fine).
It didn't matter a jot that she had a different look.
Their coffees went cold. They talked there for hours.
Finally - this was the one that he'd sought.
Soulmates exist! She even agreed with his rather unusual take on Dostoyevski.
She felt the same weird way!

"World," he thought, "I've made my choice. I want this one!"
Her hair wasn't messy - it was short and neat and perfect.
She wore glasses, and they were adorable.
But meetings in libraries, they weren't enough.
He'd waited too long, he wanted more of this stuff.
It was pleasant enough to give coffee a stir,
But dammit and blast it, he wanted HER.
>>
>>51674118
How do you go from short to long?
>>
>>51674212
/5
The blaze of her light made his old shadow turn pale,
But he was now older, had no time left to fail.

"I'll be back in five months. We can carry on then."
"Oh yes? Going anywhere horrible?"
"Ha ha. Fossil-hunting trip to Kenya. My ex-boyfriend organised it ages ago."
"Ah. Might that prove awkward?"
"Very."

Telephones are passé - now it's e-mail and better: Skype.
The images can freeze sometimes, but it doesn't do to gripe.
Late night long sessions of get-to-know-me chatter.
Should he keep it light? Is that right? Or cut to the heart of the matter?
The calls got rarer, then rarer still.
He began to get concerned.
Little news, then less, until,
After she returned...

Her smile was sympathetic, as the too-long pause did linger,
And his civil gaze dropped down to see the ring upon her finger.

His sun set over the train that left the station with the girl he couldn't win,
And he saw that he had his old shadow back, but now, he had its twin.
