Anyone got a recommendation for an army which is beginner friendly in terms of painting, looking to stay away from warhammer 40k until i git gud at painting, AoS is what I'm looking at currently, thinking about orroks.

Don't pick an army based on painting, pick it based on what you want to play. If need be leave it bare while you practice on Reaper Bones minis to get your skills.

first and foremost - crop your images. that does not need to be 3 MB, that big, or have all that surround space.

Secondly, and most importantly - you are falling into a bad trap for your Nurgle sculpt, one that many people fall into at the start, but sadly some people never get out of. Nurgle is about disease and decay, given form by the feeling of Despair. that is the easy way to say it.

now, your "gunk" looks just like that - random blobs of stuff. What kind of diseases are you going for? what kind of texture, what sort of growths? Even if you add a "break-out effect" that makes it look like it's pushing out, you really have to be careful right now, because you run the risk of it looking like a pizza when you've painted it.

The best ways of improvement in this is to study what some people do, and avoid what you see others do. Pic related is a great study, as you can see Decay, disease and texture applied quite smoothly. I'm not saying you'll be a master overnight, because that is impossible, but you can improve. Another way, if you've got a strong enough stomach is to google/research various diseases and find "references" on what you want, but again, be careful with this one! not everyone has a strong stomach when it comes to things like that!

I recommend looking up Plaguebones for nice ideas, as well as checking up on Svartmetall's Nurgle tutorial, which is a decent beginner-helping tool

you should always strive towards being as good as possible, towards doing your best and to perfection.
If you're always gonna settle on "just fine" you'll never grow with what you do.
>>
>>51629578
Alright, sorry for not cropping, I`ll do it next time.
As for what diseases Im going for, I want it to be a growth, kind of like tumors, but with that moist texture, that things like wet moss have. Not the biggest fan of things "sticking out" from the vechiles, but I may do something like that for my zombies. I was plannning to base it all white, and then wash the "corrupted" places with camoshade, like Duncan did in his Plaguebeares video, and highlight it with some nurgling green, and finish it off with nurgle rot for the pus flowing out.
Thanks for the advice my man.

What's the difference between a wash and a glaze?
>>
>>51631082
a wash pools in the recesses and creates contrast between those and raised areas

a glaze colors everything it touches uniformly

although both can be used either way with the right technique and sometimes people mix the two, so you can do several affects with either
>>
>>51631082
Glazes are ultra thin washes, they're for tinting models. Washes are for mass shading models quickly.

In the First Edition roolz, there were very complex charts and tables for Chaos Mutations. Most of what was in Realms of Chaos was slanted towards WHFB, but Rogue Trader had several pages dedicated to it specifically for WH40K. There were tentacle-stalk eyes, head of a Plaguebearer, headless, faceless ... all sorts of mutations, some of which had in-game effects.

Soo...didn't you kind of buy a present for yourself then?
Or does your brother simply not paint?

Dunno, just seems a little odd. Never got the appeal of getting into the hobby if you have no inclination to hobby (as in the verb).

Either way, came out nice. Could use a highlight on the metals to sharpen it up a bit maybe.

I'm thinking about painting my Death Company's black armor with a base of Abaddon Black, a drybrush of Dawnstone, then a wash of Nuln Oil. Good idea or bad idea?
Also, should I use Nuln Oil or Nuln Oil Gloss? I've heard that Nuln Oil Gloss can make some really nice looking Power Armor, but I've yet to see any actual pictures of it.

Any advice for me?

>>
>>51633157
in my experience drybrushing black is a bad idea, it's just too messy especially on marines which have subtle lines and curved surfaces. just follow the edges with the tip of a small brush. I'd use something darker than dawnstone either eshin/mechanicus grey or go blue with the Fang.

I'm not I can it without making my guy look like one of those Tron looking abominations like pic related. I just don't have the skill with the brush yet to get those thin lines, even doing the Duncan trick where you hit it with the side of the brush.

>>51633467
I'd rather practice on the metal models I already have since they're so much easier to strip than on the plastic models that are much more fragile. Don't be mistaken, I'm still practicing and I'm making decent progress, but I'm still not confident (or in my own opinion skilled enough) enough yet to try my hand on a model I can't easy strip if I fuck it up.
>>
>>51633445
Well the trick is to not go overboard with it like that pic. You don't need to do EVERY hard edge, just enough to get the highlight. You might be using a brush that's too big for the job if your edge highlights are too thick.

Depends on the method, but the one I'm using isn't very expensive really, and it's producing some great results for me. I've been recasting using Blue stuff to clone some bits for some conversions I'm doing. They aren't perfect, but they are passable, and I'm getting better at it so i expect the quality will only go up.

See all you gotta do is buy some blue stuff. Its a thermo plastic that becomes pliant if put in hot water, and then rapidly hardens. It's also non stick, so the bits come out of it without any hassle. You can get several sticks twenty bucks or so. Tell you what, when I get home I'll show you some of my results and a few pictures of how it works and you can decide if it's the thing for you.

You can also probably find yourself a video of it online, I did. Hope this helps. Good luck anon. What do you want the shields for?
>>
>>51634333
If you add an eyebrow just over the eye it may help to reduce the terrifying look people are commenting about. I would reccomend a dark brown rather than pure black.
>>
>>51635218
i want to experiment with sculpting, and i thought shields would be a good starting point since i can make a basic shape, and then do all the hard work with tools once it's dry.
also, my friend plays a dnd barb that uses two shields and collects shields, so spares and scrap shields i could give to him
>>
>>51635218
I assume your using the blue stuff to press cast green stuff?, If you want some sharper results try mixing some milliput, into the green stuff, it makes a huge improvement to the detail level.
>>
>>51633588
Send it back to GW if you bought it from the webstore or at an actual store. They may be assholes, but apparently their customer service is top notch.
>>

>>
>>51633588

The early generation ones are. This is why you should never buy a Finecast model unless it first came out very, very recently, or you are able to inspect the box in person at a store. The old Finecast models are resin poured in metal molds so before they perfected the technique/remastered the molds, you get complete pieces of shit. It took them over 2-3 years to finally make Finecast that wasn't Swiss cheese, and even then the material isn't as hard or sturdy as resin and will often go floppy or melt in certain liquids or heat.
>>
>>51635847

Appologies in advance for the poor quality of the photo. So i've been trying to recast and clone some jump packs for the Seraphim i'm going to be converting. This is how it's turned out more or less. I still need to clean it up a bit, but basically I wanted to see if anyone here has experience with this sort of thing and could help me. My problem is that when I crack open the mold it has the mold lines from hell. This big blotchy outline that runs around the whole thing where the two halves meet. It's a pain to try and remove, sometimes when I'm removing it other bits will break off as well, and detail gets lost/ obscured by it. Is there anywhay to avoid that? Or to deal with it better than I have been.

You >>51637997 seem to be talking about some way to deal with it, but I'm afraid I don't comprehend your meaning. Could you please elaborate?

thicken your paints while your at it.

>>51638094
First I recommend you a mix of 60% milliput 40% greenstuff, second use clamps while in the frame this makes the moldlines paper thin and thanks to the frame's walls exerting pressure one each axis the piece doesn't end flattened

I'm trying to comprehend how redoing the mold halves several times could improve things, but i'm just not seeing it. Do i cast both halves and then boil down the first half and reapply it? And then do the same to the second and then rinse and repeat? How on earth does that improve things? I mean i'll give it a go, why not, but it baffles me.
>>

Do you have to remove it from the frame to open it? How do you get it in and out? Finished my second zenithal priming test model -- just some bones figure that has been sitting on my desk for over a year. Wanted to do an organic model before committing to paint the rest of my Guild Ball figures in this manner, and honestly it worked out really well. This is the easiest model I've ever painted, probably clocked about 4 hours total in painting it. Really not much to it; basecoat, shadows, aggressive highlighting and then off to the races. The skintone I'm not super pleased with, but work on skintones will continue in the future. Overall, for the amount of effort this took I am very pleased with the result, and am anxious to paint a mini actually worthy of serious effort with the technique.

I think I'm done with this guy.
I need to do something to make his base less shit, but that'll take some thinking or me scrapping off the texture paint that's already on there - neither of which I'm willing to do tonight. Might add some now and grass as coverup but I'm not sure.

You've fallen into the nurgle greenstuff trap of "It's nurgle, I ain't gotta sculpt shit!"

It's what most people do when they first start GSing, completely understandable. My advice would be: don't just work into your putty with no thought behind it for the sake of texture, think about what you're trying to sculpt. Get some reference images of rust, grime, skin deformation, burns etc and work from there. The end result will be much more rewarding and you won't blend into the massed ranks of nurgle GS abominations.

So, decided to make a dolled up Sentinel to act as the commander in an Emperor's Talon Recon Company. Used some spare bits to armor the legs, a space marine HK Missle because it looks way better, and a standard to make the commander stand out. Thoughts?

I like the left one. Maybe try to incorporate the reddish pink into the claws. The grey also looks pretty flat but that could be the camera.
>>
>>51640817
photography is a bitch like that. I was gonna say it probably looks fine IRL. In fact reading my post back it looks like I was drunk with all the mistakes. I wasn't meaning the texture or tone of the green. I was just talking about the bottom line where the green meets the red could be neater. That is of course nitpicking, but what is WIP without nitpicking? That model is so old there's probably no sculpted boundary on the eye lense anyway.

Very nice freehanding anon. Cannibal johnny be praised.

Looks great!

The only gripe is the abrupt highlighting on the cloak, but as somebody who has been in your situation before you're probably not too keen on picking up a shit ton of paints for something you're just picking up as a hobby again.
>>
>>51641004
Thanks. Yeah I could probably go back and blend the cloak more. Might do that later. I wanted to finish it in one sitting before I caved and dropped the project. Plus I'm an arm's length painter, I want it to look good on the table without spending a lot of time on it.
>>
>>51641084
That's probably for the best.

Speed painting is best practiced by painting quickly, eventually you get good at it. I've seen too many people try to get good at painting THEN get good at doing it fast and it frustrates them endlessly.

Best of luck senpai.
>>
>>51639880

Very nicely executed.
>>
>>51640977
To improve I would neaten up the highlighting, like on the hat. And for the thick highlighting like on the cloak could use blending.
More effort = better result. I know cause I am lazy as shit with painting these days.

But it looks decent.

I found it with Alpharius, but once I get the cash together I'll likely go with a Mumak conversion instead. I'm also considering buying a regular toy elephant and going to town with milliput. The Chaos Mammoth would be cool and all, but it's significantly more expensive and likely to trigger my store manager.

I want to make a Chaos Warshrine for my Bloodbound with a Slaughterpriest chopping heads, and after considering some ideas of it surfing on a wave of skulls something on the back of a giant warbeast, with victims-to-be in gibbet cages has stuck in my mind.

Yes. Afaik, just about the only thing that will do the trick anyway.
>I always get some overflow when setting magnets
Have you tried using less glue?
>>
>>51641637
Constantly, there's just not much clearance when setting the magnet.

I'm assuming acetone doesn't fuck up plastic, then?
>>
>>51641677
>I'm assuming acetone doesn't fuck up plastic, then?
It absolutely does. It dissolves it actually.
So not a good idea to let it soak. And it will take a while before the super glue gets soft.

What's your problem though? did you accidentially glue the magnetized parts together or something? It's probably better to snap that off then and just sand or cut the excess glue off.
Can't think of a scenario where you'd need acetone, really.

Ah, cool. The mammoth is also considerably larger than a warshrine, I think a Mumak is still a little larger, but more proportionate.

I'm also still thinking about what to use as a warshrine, at the moment I think I'll go with a conversion of a chariot of some sort, something like pic related
>>
>>51641702
The issue is just that while the magnets are set flush in both surfaces, one or both have a rounded glue surface due to the overflow that causes the fit to jiggle a bit and I'm not the best at sanding that completely flat
>>
>>51641677
Acetone does nothing BUT fuck up plastic. You're better off letting it dry and then scraping/ sanding it off.
>>
>>51641713
Yeah, my problem is that once you have something that looks like it can support a decent shrine on the 120mm oval, the base is full. I can deal with the size difference for Rule of Cool.
>>
>>51641724
Sounds like that would be easy enough to fix with a blade. Just scrape the glue off. Should snap right off from the magnets.

The edges are too clean. If they were like tendrils, looking like they were really reaching out, actively growing, spreading across then maybe it'd be okay. Mantic have infected plastic sci-fi troopers.
Or you could just mix the odd zombie/ghoul head in here and there.

There is a whole host of zombie games on the market atm and some of the do have these kind of bloaters.

Alternately you could just tack lasgun arms on some graveguard bodies and use gasmask heads and stuff. Or just hooded heads with antlers.

the fact that you covered the door pisses me off.

>>
>>51644770
ah that makes sense, though it's maybe a little too busy. You've got a magazine on there and a lot of the stuff looks like a gun, plus the claw is too obviously a claw and not an antenna. I'd probably cut it down to the pack with the lightning bolt on it with that metal orb and some wires going into it.
>>
>>51644766
Use a rubber tipped clay shaper (they have lots of different names) and apply a lot of pressure rubbing the edge into the plastic. Failing that, for something like a shoulder pad you can just let the green stuff go right up to the edge in a very thin layer so you don't end up with seam.

For applying the face would probably let it harden, cut away everything you don't want then just glue it on and fill in the gaps with green stuff. I find actually quite often the answer with green stuff is to do a minimal amount, let it harden then build on that.
>>
>>51644997
Thank you for the advice anon, I will try and post my progress upon what you said. But what if I want to apply the faces to some curved surfaces? How would I go about doing that after it's hardened?

I want to write "Craig" on the flag because their fluff is they're from a planet where the planetary governor is an edgy teenager named Craig who is obsessed with the DKOK and makes the planetary regiment wear knockoff brand DKOK uniforms. Thus, they are the Death Korps of Craig. Not enough room on the regimental flag to write it though.
