I tried having suffixes be themed per each college, so yeah, it came out with some cringeworthy names. Which was kinda intentional. The worst one by far was probably 'choromatics' though, since nobody knew what the fuck 'choro' meant. But "spacematics" or "spatiamatics" didn't read well either.

So, anyone else actually playtested my system? I'd love to hear about how it's went.

Not really a fan of how ghettoized the magic is, but otherwise bredy gud.

Also, while I get the appeal of using magic like a relatively freeform superpower, I do think you shouldn't knock discrete spell lists either, especially not for a game with Harry Potter elements*, since the individual spells in Harry Potter are a real important part of the setting, especially the goofy little toy spells the tooth-growing hex.

*even if that's not what you're intending the game to be about, people are going to want to use it that way

I'd recommend reworking the courses into things like D&D spell schools. It feels kind of silly (in a capeshitty way, not in a witchy way) that there is a "FIRE CLASS 101" and an "ICE CLASS 101". A proper witch, even a specialist, would have a variety of spells at her disposal. Thus, I it'd be better if there were an "Elemental Evocation 101", which would include fire, ice, electricity, air, water, and earth. It might be required if you wanted to get a degree in alchemy, alchemical engineering, or battle magic.

Then I'd recommend a specific list of spells as opposed to general superpower criteria. Since the game is about witches-in-training, a spell failure mechanic (and possibly miscast tables!) might be in order. I'd recommend against a spells per day system, since that might discourage experimentation.

Each spell should have one or more subjects associated with it. Your sum of your grades in a course plus any bonuses from studying that subject on your own determine your general competency in that subject -- if you've never taken a class, then just the latter. Your likelihood to cast a spell correctly (and to control its power, and to avoid side effects if it is cast incorrectly) is based on your highest competency score applicable to that spell.

I actually have been wanting to revisit the project for a long time, especially given the anime and second movie. Now that it seems I have people interested, I guess I really should!

The 'rework' I had in mind was very radical, but if people like the basis of this system, I could just try to improve it.

And yes, I'd definitely take the recent anime into account. The system is meant to be a combination of LWA -and- HP, but it's definitely majority LWA.

>>51620861
>>51631519
I like this idea. I trusted in the Administrator to provide for miscast effects and such, but supplying some suggestions is not a bad idea!

I really didn't want spell lists, as I wanted to keep the system very freeform. However, I DEFINITELY agree that the spell schools I had were shit. That was the #1 thing I wanted to change.

The grade descriptions were simultaneously really boring and number-heavy, while also not being crunchy or mechanically interesting. I definitely wanted to revise that.

And I did agree the schools didn't feel particularly interesting. I'd probably stick closer to the source material of HP and LWA in a future iteration. Perhaps 'specialties' could govern things like being better at fire rather than ice, and so on... something like that...

However, I definitely did NOT want spell lists, for the same reason this anon provided: >>51636457. I figured players would collaborate to decide classic HP and LWA style spells, rather than have to pick them from a literal list. You know? I much preferred the more freeform way of describing what you're capable of, but not what

(Continued...)
>>
>>51640787

>>51638191
Lol, you liked the lore? Thanks... I actually kinda find it embarassing looking back to it.

I definitely had plans to include illustrations and more examples of play and lore in the next draft. "A day in the life", as suggested by >>51638703, was on the list.

>>51636457
Combat was basically purely narrative in this draft. I really didn't intend for this draft to be treated anywhere close to final (it was like 0.01 and was written in just a few days), which is why there is no section on how to handle injuries, stress, etc. I was playtesting possibilities for it then.

-

So, given that it seems plenty of people are interested... I guess Academagia is back on my active roster! I've already been thinking about it off and on, but now I feel really galvanized to give it the proper polish it deserves. It's been quite a while since I touched it last, and I'm confident I can make it better.

Thanks for the kind words and thoughtful feedback, everyone. It really means a lot. It's super surreal seeing so many people enjoy a dinky little personal project I made three years ago!

>>
>>51640836
Oh, and I also definitely wanted to revise what counted as an 'Easy A'. Having actions equal to your grade be Easy As was definitely a mistake...
>>
>>51640787
You can't trust players to interpret your rules in a specific way. You can't assume that they're going to look at, say, Cryoturgy and say something like, "I cast the spell Englaciatus Maximus to encase the dragon in a block of ice!" They might lack imagination, or they might see that as a nuisance and just treat cryoturgy as an ice superpower defined within the limits you've written down.

Remember another thing: just because you have spell lists doesn't mean the players have to pick from them! You could assemble a table of spellbooks for the Administrator to select from and give to players. You could also have a list of spells the students learn just from attending class -- in week 1 of Elemental Evocation, they might learn "flint sparks", "static cling", and "frosty condensation". The second week they might learn "snuff flame" and "electric insulation". By the end of the semester, they'd be learning "hands of glory", "surface freeze", and "Nikola's lesser arc".

Imagine one PC attending class and learning a spell to levitate a single lightweight object. She has fun doing this, so after practicing it on her own, she checks a book out from the library called "Ye Danse of ye Wynds", which contains a number of similar spells. Most of these are too difficult for her to perform, but she uses her knowledge gained from class to get to the point where she can inconsistently perform a spell that lets her levitate a number of objects at once, and move them around in the air once they are off the ground. She gets better at this and eventually impresses her friends by levitating the fallen autumn leaves into the shapes of funny puppets and making them perform a puppet show!

Leaving it all up to the players to come up with their own spells based on what the rules say they can do with magic might cheat them out of the experience of progressively learning new spells as they explore the wonderful world of magic.
>>
Reminder that LWA is a Nickelodeon shit-tier children-oriented Jap-Harry Potter anime with Western-style animation and not only is a shit anime but also shouldn't have its place on /a/.
>>
>>51641455
Reminder that being a desiccated turd about everything you don't especially like means nobody actually enjoys spending time with you, and you will grow to be a burden on everyone you know until the day they finish paying off your cemetery plot.
On that day someone will breath a sigh of mild relief and they will never think of you again.
>>
What are some other good systems for this genre? Wasn't there a Harry Potter homebrew tg made?
>>
>>51641376
Agreed with everything you're saying. Great stuff. I'll reply in more detail later but I'm on phone right now.

Right, in the final version I would have recommended players and GMs collaborate to come up with spell names, but again, this was my personal-use playtest version. A lot of things I never got around to putting in it, such as an extended GMing section.

Once again. Thanks for the feedback and awesome suggestions!

>>
I'm fairly partial to the way the rules system is now, although I'm not opposed to making the magic system a little less nebulous.
I just like how kind of free form it is, instead of being limited by long lines of spell lists and all the associated bookkeeping.
>>
>>51643122
Can't sympathise with a cunt.
>>
>>51641699
>>51645507
Remember that spell lists don't have to be complex and tedious! A cheat sheet of spells sorted by school with one-line explanation of what they do would make spell lists so much easier to deal with, maybe with certain spells having a short internal list of augments to the effect on which the players can spend their degrees of success, advancing once in a list per degree of success.

>flint sparks: The caster flicks sparks from her fingertips, igniting kindling or gunpowder.
>static cling: The caster imbues a handkerchief-sized patch of fabric, hair, or fur with a light electrical charge, causing it to stand on end or adhere to things lightly.
>frosty condensation: The caster touches an object, chilling it and causing water droplets to condense on it by the end of this round, and freeze by the end of the next
>snuff flame: The caster sticks her hand into a [candle/torch/campfire]-sized flame, putting it out instantly.*
>electric insulation: The caster touches a [grapefruit/cantaloupe/watermelon]-sized object, causing it to resist electrical charge for [one round/one hour/one day].
>hands of glory: The caster's left hand bursts into unconsuming flame for [one turn/one hour] or until she makes a fist with that hand.
>surface freeze: The caster touches the surface of a [hot tub/swimming pool/pond]-sized body of water, causing it to freeze over for one day. The ice [is not/is] strong enough to skate on.
>Nikola's lesser arc: A bolt of electricity arcs from the caster's hands or wand, moderately charging a grounded and conductive object a short ways away to lightly damage it.**

"Short range" means "within 10 feet", as opposed to "mid range" which means "across the classroom" and "long range" which means "down the hallway".

*Yes, this means she burns her hands if she fails to cast the spell correctly!
**Unless it resists the charge.

Still would need a little more polishing to make it nice and compact, but you get the idea
>>
>>51645507
Yeah, I dont think I'll change that much for 0.02. I have a few subsystems I'd like to add (stress, and a simple form of "time management" to capture the importance of studying) and a few fixes (the dice mechanic, perhaps?) And I definitely want to overhaul the spell system. Other than that it played fine in the few playtests I got to do.

The 'radical rework' I had in mind was to convert it closer to PBTA, with moves instead of freeform resolution. But I don't think that'd be necessary at all.

If anyone has any suggestions for other things to add or fix, I'd love to hear them.
>>
>>51646041

>>
>>51646041
This is precisely what I would do, yeah. A lot like 0.01 in its descriptions and such, but with more of an emphasis on narrative effect rather than numbers. You're full of wonderful suggestions!

>>51646085
Definitely! I want to cover 'wild magic', 'spell creation', and 'miscasts' in the new version for sure. I think inventing new spells would fall under some possible 'studying' mechanics I'm working on, which would fit alongside the 'stress' system I'm planning to cover for HP (alongside emotional injury and as a penalty for poor time management)

So I've mentioned the 'stress' system a few times.

The health mechanic I had been settling on in playtests was basically an abstraction. Injuries and wounds and such would be purely narrative, since it's rare that people's injuries or wounds really hamper them (or even happen at all) in Harry Potter and Little Witch Academia; either it's comical, or it's their consequences that matter more.

What we were instead using is a system sorta inspired by Fate, where you take 'Stress'. This could be stress caused by pain, but also by emotions and being overworked. In addition, it incentivizes characters to not ALWAYS be adventuring and ignoring classes. The more time you spend away from classes and avoiding schoolwork, the lower your grades get (not the Grade mechanic, but your fictional grades), and the more Stress you accumulate. This basically makes you more fragile, as it's as if you start off with less hit-points when you start with Stress.

In addition, I like the Conditions in the Masks RPG system, so I might steal those. When you hit certain levels of Stress, you'd be forced to take a Condition - something like Angry, or Insecure, or whatever. These Conditions can be solved with an action in the fiction (such as curing Angry by lashing out and destroying something important), or can be solved mechanically. Not sure how the latter would work... perhaps simply going to 0 Stress cures your Conditions.

Of course, this would make the system a -little- more complicated, but I think it'd be worth it overall. I noticed in my playtests that the system was light enough it could handle a little more weight, and in addition, it -really- needed a mechanical means of representing consequences. This should serve nicely.

As a result of adding Stress, some other mechanics - such as ways to remove Stress, and an aspect on the Report Card that governs how much Stress you can take - would be needed. If anyone has any ideas for those, I'd love to hear them!

Bad news and good news, everybody.

Bad news first - the file I had for the Academagia rulebook is messed up, somehow, so I will have to start from near-scratch. That's not a big deal, though, as I was gonna be sprucing up so much of it anyway! It just means there might be a slight delay for 0.02.

Good news... we have a Discord right now! https://discord.gg/JEgJWRH

I'm gonna be GMing for my group later tonight, but until then I'll be on there and working on 0.02!
>>
>>51654416
So right now my current to-do list consists of the following:

- Overhaul the rulebook completely for 0.02!
- Re-do the Colleges and Classes; combining some classes, including some missing ones, making names clearer
- Implement a 'Stress system', similar to a health system, to mechanically represent consequences
- Rework the Easy A mechanic, perhaps remove it entirely
- Expand the lore, I guess?
- Include a better GMing advice section

If anyone has any advice or suggestions on these, feel free to chime in!

I'll also continue the dump, now that I'm done setting up the Discord.

Thinking about the classes, I definitely want to cover all the options in Harry Potter and Little Witch Academia. I'm skipping truly boring ones to represent mechanically - they will instead be used as fluff for the Stress system.

The important Classes are definitely:

1.) Potions
2.) Charms
3.) Transfiguration
4.) Care of Magical Creatures
5.) (Defence Against) Dark Arts
6.) Alchemy

And then interesting classes that might not be mechanically represented as Classes, or folded into other Classes:

1.) Herbology
2.) Divination
3.) Flying

Any other suggestions?
>>
>>51655532
personally, I liked the old way where there were specific, clear cut classes like space-time fuckery class, entropy class, and seeing dead people class.

if you're dead set on that way though, I do think a few of those more extremely specific classes could be worked in as elective classes that you take as sort of filler for the required main classes. Kind of like Creative Writing or Pottery.
>>
>>51655569
I do agree, but as other anons have noted, at the very least there are gaps in the classes I have available. (Such as my lack of curses/hexes and (DA)DA stuff)

I'll be considering a version where classes are more condensed, as the other anon suggested, but it's not going to be the version in 0.02. It might be an alternative for people to try out, though!

The more specific classes could definitely be Extracurriculars. Right now, I'm thinking they're either that, or they're what I'm calling "Tedium" - the other classes between the ones you really like, which you nonetheless have to spend time attending and studying for. That's gonna be a part of the Stress system... the more you neglect your responsibilities and classwork, the more Stress you accumulate!

maybe yu could combine the two concepts?
Some people take extracurricular classes because it's a passion of their, while some take it as filler. If you take it as filler you don't really give that much of a shit and don't really need to work as hard since it's not a required class, so youget massively decreased stress from it (while also gaining almost no benefit), or you could have your character put heart into it and have it become one of their (or perhaps the) main class for them, but it increases it's workload by a lot.

Not a bad idea... I was wondering how to mechanically handle 'delinquents', and I think having a mechanic to represent putting your all in a class versus just coasting in it is not a bad idea. I definitely was thinking 'deliquent' characters should take less stress from ditching, but wasn't sure how to represent that.

Thanks for the idea!

>>51655389
Not a bad idea! Feel free to go ahead. Flesh in whatever you like! The main things to flesh in would be locations on the campus (like the Forbidden Forest, Room of Requirement, Chamber of Secrets) and places to visit elsewhere in Tyrr (Hogsmeade, Shrieking Shack, etc.)

Fun details about the Professors and Classes would also be nice. Stuff like their personalities, difficulty, etc.

More "Tedium" classes, like History of Muggle Studies, would also be fun. Also some example extracurriculars, like sports, hobbies, and clubs.

Details about races, even the addition of mroe races, would also be nice.

But that's just the tip of the iceberg! Come up with whatever you like!

Should there be a school of magic for fairy tale style folklore magic?
Stuff like Baba Yaga making her hut walk on chicken's feet or how the Fairy Queen Ana could give birth to a child by boling fish in milk then dripping the liquid into her womb. That sort of strange, abstract magic that does nothing in particular.
>>
>>51662698
Great question!

I think, for the most part, these kinds of weird folklore magic would use the more directly applicable school. The first would probably be a form of golem creation, I think. So that'd be covered under Transfiguration & Imbuement. The chicken feet of the hut would be considered as a part of the hut, rather than a fusion-type deal.

For crazier fairy-tale magic, like the second one, I'd say it would count as magic that is completely wild, without structure. I'm thinking rules to cast 'wild magic' in 0.02 would be nice, and this would be a perfect example of it - magic which truly has no valid College it fits under.

Yeah, that was the intent. I'll definitely try to preserve that when moving to the 'spell list' system. I do think the repetition of "one spell grade-1 you're enrolled in, two spells grade-2 you're enrolled in, or one spell of grade-2 of class not enrolled in" is a part of what made it look tiresome to me, so I might considering just writing that as a keyword somehow.

In addition, if I do a spell list system, I could simply make it something like

>Concoct Tincture - Grade F
Create a potion with the effect of a Spell from another Class you're enrolled in, with Grade one less than your Grade in Potions & Herbology.

>Concoct Mixture - Grade D
Create a potion with the effect of two Spells from one or more Classes you're enrolled in, each with Grade two less than your Grade in Potions & Herbology. Both spells do not have to come from the same class.

>Concoct Extract - Grade C
Create a potion with the effect of one Spell from a Class you are NOT enrolled in, with Grade two less than your Grade in Potions & Herbology.

>Concoct Yliaster - Grade A+
Create a potion with a major effect that cannot be replicated easily, or perhaps at all, by a spell from another Class.

Thinking in retrospect, I think that Concoct Yliaster could cover >>51662698 's second idea, since it's about the creation of a liquid concoction with an unusual effect. That'd be one weird session of Academagia, though.

The more I think about it, the more I'm sold on including a very basic set of spell lists. Unlike D&D and whatnot, they wouldn't be the end-all be-all of spells you can cast in this system, they're just examples and guidelines of what to expect for each Grade. But they definitely add a lot of flavor, as other anons have noted, and fit the settings nicely.

Still, I strongly encourage players and GMs to collaborate and make up spells of their own as well.
>>
>>51663717
When it comes to wizardly companions, I'm thinking they'd be almost purely narrative unless you start investing in the Beast Taming class. As a narrative note, they can help sometimes, but they'll also be a hindrance other times. But when you enroll in Beast Taming, then you start getting more bonuses.
>>
>>51657827
A fantastical one
>>
>>51664539
Just thinking about how often Hedwig or Crookshanks came up in Harry Potter, it's clear they're less actively useful and more just a narrative addition. Even when they're sometimes useful, they also can be problematic - Crookshanks being a good example.

Perhaps young wizards and witches could have a 'personal quirk' they start with, like Harry Potter's pets, or Lotte's lantern...

One thing I've been working hard on is a re-work of the dice mechanic. The summation of pass and fail degrees felt necessary 3 years ago when I had a lot less experience with RPG design, but nowadays I'm more of the belief that resolution-by-degrees isn't necessary. Instead, I prefer to leave that to the GM's leeway and discretion, with the application of 'soft moves' and 'hard moves', as discussed in PBTA systems. (While this isn't a PBTA system, I do really like 'soft moves' and 'hard moves', and I apply them, alongside 'principles', to most of my projects in the GMing advice section.)

(Continued...)

In other words, the dice mechanic is going to be vastly simplified. This will give me room for complexity in other ways, I hope, since it removes a lot of computation from play!

The current mechanic will likely look like this:

1.) Determine the Curve of your Test. This means finding the difference between your Grade in the subject and the Grade of the action you're attempting. (If you have a higher Grade than the Grade of what you're attempting, then you don't roll... that's an Easy Action.)

2.) Roll two six-sided dice. The Curve of the Test is the number you're aiming to beat on both dice.

a.) If you beat the Curve of the Test on both dice - that is, if you rolled a number greater than the Curve on both - then you PASS with FLYING COLORS. This means you not only succeed, but you gain a small advantage in doing so.

b.) If you beat the Curve of the Test on ONE dice, but NOT the other, you simply PASS, having just SCRAPED BY. This means you're given a choice... would you prefer to succeed, but be faced with a cost or consequence? Or fail, but gain an advantage in doing so?

> This is new! Rather than an annoying table to consult and having to add and subtract numbers on the dice, it's folded into the checking process! Hooray!

c.) If you failed to beat the Curve of the Test on BOTH dice, you FAILED it. This means you failed to complete the action. You possibly even had some additional negative effects as a result of your failure, too!

3.) If you failed your test, you learn from your mistakes, and gain Learning Points equal to
the Curve of the Test!

> I'm tempted to add a result for box-cars (ACING the test, perhaps?) and snake-eyes (BOMBING the test, clearly)

> In addition, the failure table could still appear in the GMing advice guide, but just not be a de-facto rule of the game. It'd be folded into my suggestions on 'soft moves' and 'hard moves'.

Simple, elegant, while maintaining the intrigue of the original system. Thoughts? Critique?

>>51664962
Now, Easy Actions are a little problematic. Obviously the current mechanic can't support rolling for an action of a Grade lower than or equal to your current Grade in a subject... so that's why I implemented Easy Actions, which use some mechanics I borrowed from other narrativist systems to create a more collaborative story.

If the uncertainty isn't held within the randomness of the dice, then it's placed in the hands of the Administrator. With Easy Actions, you automatically succeed at what you are doing, but it's completely up to the Administrator what results. As said in 0.01, it can't BACKFIRE on you - it's still a success! - but it might not give you the information or advantage you were hoping for. It still could, though! It's just entirely up to the Administrator.

With dice, it's more random, which can spice up the gameplay more. In addition, you have to roll to learn, and you have to aspire high in order to get lots of LP, which encourages people to keep trying to roll.

However, with the new system, there IS a way to have you roll for Easy Actions - it'd just require making 1s an "always fail" result. For example, when you roll for an Easy Action, if you get no 1s (~70% chance), that's equivalent to passing with flying colors. If you get a single 1 (~28%), that's the same as passing. And if you get two 1s (~2% chance), you fail.

Of course, you'd only roll for Easy Actions that are both dramatic and uncertain, as always. It just spices it up a little, and brings it in line with other actions in the system.

For times when the results of the action aren't dramatic or uncertain, then you just pass, with the Administrator commenting as before.

In addition, I'm not so sure about LP=Curve. It makes sense, but it could be wonky. Unfortunately I didn't get to playtest extended campaigns yet, so I'm not sure how it messes with character advancement. I did like that it naturally produced a learning curve, however, where it's harder to advance the better you get... and it constantly pushes you to be practicing your worse skills, or to be pushing your limits.

The existence of this rule does mean that Administrators have to be vigilant about making sure the failure matches the attempt, in severity.

I'm also wondering what college Curses/Hexes falls under... most likely it'd be a subset of Tenebrology, as it's a nice parallel to the protective charms and boons of Hierology, and it's a classic warlock thing to do. I always felt Tenebrology needed more than just antimagic, anyway.

Oh, and how do people like the names? I know a few people >>51612889 find them goofy and dumb, but that's honestly meant to be part of the charm. If they're too dumb or unclear (like choromatics), then yeah, I should fix that.

Any suggestions on choromatics, actually? Spatiamatics was what I was considering. It's not actually correct, but it's clear.

I've also been thinking of ways to spruce up Neuromatics, as it was really lacking in intrigue and details. Ideas there would be nice.

Correct. None of those classes will exist word for word, promise. I just need to make sure my classes can support options LIKE that, not the SAME as that.
>>
>>51680831
And to be clear, I'm also going to exhaustively check to make sure LWA options are included. I just haven't had time to double check against the show ad movies yet.

The intent of the ssystem I'd to remain a neutral mix between the two, capable of supporting HP, LWA, and your own creations as well!

I'm back at home on the computer, but still a little busy. Nonetheless, I can drop by with some quick advice for how to handle a stable of recurring NPCs.

In my current campaign, I've developed a -lot- of recurring NPCs. They don't appear every session or anything, but they definitely appear often. I've got at least 9 NPCs that appear almost every session, and a few that appear every few sessions. It can be tough!

The key to handling lots of NPCs is to condense them. This doesn't mean to make them simple; it's figuring out their core, and then remembering that almost like a mnemonic, to develop them outwards from there.

I've started using the "AIMS" system, which is a nice way to briefly remember the basics of an NPC. AIMS stands for Agenda, Instinct, Move, and Secret.

Basically, Agenda covers what that person wants to achieve. For teachers at the Academagia, this could be things like 'Educate people', 'Study the secrets of the world', 'Experiment freely', and 'Achieve fame and success in my field'. An NPC should have multiple agendas, even conflicting and competing ones. Professors, for example, could be torn between their responsibility to their students, and their desires for more free time! (As an educator myself, this is a real struggle...)

Instincts are essentially a character's typical approach to a problem. Do they tend to act carefully from the shadows? Or recklessly, without thinking? Do your enemy spiders prefer to isolate people, or overwhelm them? The key to an instinct is that it's a strategy to achieve Agendas. Two Professors, for example, can share the same Agenda of "Educating my pupils", but with vastly different Instincts on how best to do it! This is a great way to bring NPCs into interesting relationships or conflicts. Identify ones with similar Instincts but differing Agendas, or vice versa, and use that to create odd pairings or rivals!

Even with just Agendas and Instincts, you already have a lot to work with for an NPC. As long as you can remember their motivations and typical approach to problems and their goals, the rest can often be improvised as needed! The key is to really not think of NPCs as 'role-fillers'. They have to feel alive... but they also need to be simple to maintain your sanity! That's why I like this system.

However, Moves and Secrets are really helpful as well, if you want more depth. Moves are things that this character is often going to be doing, such as "Let slip a secret" (Hagrid!) or "Appear unexepectedly as a victim to be saved" (A Neville-type character, perhaps). This is where I REALLY appreciate the AIMS system. I often think of things I really want my characters to be doing to make them unique, but forget to actually have them do it! It's simple to just look at the list of Moves and remember, "Ah right, this is what I wanted them to show off".

In addition, the Moves can serve as soft and hard moves for you to use as penalties for failure. Stuff like an enemy who has the Move "Reveal a trap I had waiting for you", that's perfect as a soft move, maybe even a hard move!

Lastly, S is for Secrets. This isn't super necessary for many NPCs, but for recurring ones it's awesome, as it gives you great plothooks and a little direction for roleplaying. You can have them tip-toe around the secret, keep that in mind when they're acting, and so on. The best use for Secrets is as quest hooks. Stuff like Professor Shaytan >>51656305 and her Secrets makes for really fun plot hooks. In addition, it can serve as leverage for player characters, or as intrigue to spice up a relationship. Heck, the Secret could be known to all the players, but must be kept secret from everyone else! The key is that Secrets are hidden variables that change an NPC's behavior, and that serve as developments in that NPC's plotline.

I hope that's a lot of help!

As a nice bonus, I really recommend using AIMS for other stuff too! A while back for my group, I was planning a really intense dungeon, and I knew I'd been having trouble remembering cool features and traps I wanted to emphasize in previous areas they'd explored. So this time, I tried using the AIMS system on each area of the dungeon!

For example, one room was a big machining factory, with mechanical arms swinging around, sparks flying, etc. For a place or abstract thing, the Agenda is more of the -narrative- purpose of the room, and the Instincts are the representations / manifestations of that purpose. This room was intended to be a battleground, so its Agenda was to "Be an interesting battlefield", and its Instinct was to "Complicate and hinder the heroes' efforts". Its Moves were to "Have enemies appear from unexpected areas" (lots of walkways and it's a two-story room), "An arm swings in the way!", and "Sparks fly right in your path!" In addition, one Move was to "Foretell the machinations of the enemy", since it WAS their factory...

This helped me keep the scene in line with its goals (Agenda), and give it a mood and atmosphere (Instinct). In addition, the Moves helped me remember cool moments and beats I wanted to emphasize in that scene.

This use of AIMS is inspired by a few systems I enjoy. I first saw it in Legend of the Elements, where there's a similar Instinct/Move system for Predators, Silver Tongues, Landscapes, and "Great Spirits" (really badass, near-force of nature things).

Hopefully this all helps! This is really only the surface. If you have any questions or still feel overwhelmed with a large cast, I can try to elaborate more!

so what will the curse magic be like?
>>
>>51686226
On my phone, so sorry in advance for any typos.

I actually have a system in mind for curse magic, based on some thinking I did about it a long time ago for something else. The essential bits of curse magic in folklore are sympathetic bonds (having a piece of the victim to affect), and that curses almost always have an 'outlet' such as true loves kiss. In addition, the caster typically pays a price or suffers proportional to the agony of the curse.

All of those will factor into the curse magic! I'll have a rough draft to show off soon.

>Memories of a Vicious Chicken: Launch a held chicken feather to pierce the target.
>Mugwuddle's Muddling Mirage: Causes the target to hallucinate and wander randomly, mumbling gibberish.
>Wonker's Wicked Wobble: Turns any weapon wielded by the target to turn to harmless rubber.
>Reckless Encouragement of Arcane Peacock: Causes the target to feel an irrational desire to cast a particular spell, distracting them from other matters until they do so.
>Kipperwald's Perlustration Prevention: Blocks all attempts to scry the vicinity in which the spell is cast.
>Amazing Silicate Blorpler: Turns a target rock, stone, or pebble into a "blorple", a focus for teleportation. When the spell "Jogloran's Portal of Cheaper Travel" is successfully cast on a blorple, the blorple disappears and a thaumic door appears, leading to the place where the blorple was enchanted (or a random other place, if you botch the portal spell).
>Al'Hrahaz's Scintillating Blorpler: The same thing, but with jewellery. Jewellery blorples can be used multiple times before disappearing, and can be recharged, with more valuable jewellery holding more possible charges.

However, I'll be posting changes and updates ('patches') as I go, so you can free to use those in your campaigns, as I'll be using them in my playtesting.

0.02 itself will be arriving hopefully later this week, even if perhaps in slightly incomplete form. I've been bus with some very important personal matters, and will be until Wednesday morning. After that, Academia shoots to #1 priority, given all the interest. :)

Until then, do follow the discord (https://discord.gg/JEgJWRH) and this or future threads for updates! I'll be as transparent as possible with my process, since I understand you all are waiting eagerly!

From the Discord, first draft of a teacher idea:
Professor Nikolai Zolnerowich - Divination
A man born with an old magic talent called the Sight of Arcana, an ability linked to the Arcana he was born in, to see things related to it. Unfortunately, he was born under the Tower Arcana so his powers are mostly able to see into misfortunes only. This made him very important since young age, being able to predict and help reduce the damage of plenty of terrible things, but more than once his prophecies became self-fulfilling (Usually when people kept asking about their personal future) and he ended up becoming a bit of an outcast, people distrusting his abilities.
All this made him a depressive man, one who cannot differentiate by this point his own pessimistic thoughts from his own divinations, so all the school takes his constant ramblings with a grain of salt. While he is very knowledgeable in most of the classical divination methods, he is an avid user of self-inspection meditation as his divination method, earning him even more distrust with the more conservative Mages.
As a teacher he is famous for being unpredictable. He has low care about the safety of his students, since they should know the risks of magic, but when it's time to grade the students he rewards those who take precautions and fail on their trials more than anyone else, and punishes those who risks themselves and succeed against all odds.

Opinions? Horrible grammer errors?

BUNNY AKKO A CUTE!!
>>
Will there be any kind if monster manual for this game, or will making enemies be mostly up to the DM?
>>
>>51708701
I'll probably include a few monsters as examples, yeah. They won't have stats or anything though, besides perhaps recommended amounts of Stress to inflict.
>>
>>51709837
They'd consist of stuff like AIMS I was talking about earlier - a set of narrative key pieces and moves to trigger. I'll find a good example from a PBTA game later

PLEASE include some sort of spider atleast.

What else are you planning to put in there? any stuff like nagas or what?
>>
>>51712195
Not sure yet! There will DEFINITELY be a giant spider though. I'll try to include both classics and things that serve as useful examples

loli is okay if you self-insert as the loli

You could list the threats a monster imposes and its strengths and weaknesses. If Frankenstein's fleshgolem is afraid of fire, mention that. If a salamander ISN'T afraid of fire, mention that. etc.
>>
so what should the others teachers we haven't talked about be like?

(where the fuck was Diana's reaction when Akko seemed more attractive to FancyPants than herself?)
>>
>>51714971
Diana doesn't even know they met
>>
>>51714971
>>51715014
Diana didn't seem to really care anyway. They have certain differences of opinion and she might even suspect they're an enemy of magic.
>>
>>51715579
I bet Diana would be secretly jealous if she found out
>>
>>51715774
Maybe a hint of tsun

Definitely. It'd be something like:

Habitat
Instinct
Strengths
Weaknesses
Signature moves
