Anyone got experience with custom HeroForge minis? How detailed are they?
>>
>>51604199
I've been thinking about making Cyriss-oriented terrain for a while, but I'm having a hard time figuring out things beyond "look at these neat battery-pillars! cool!"

>>51604872
the high-detail minis hold their detail really well, but they ARE super breakable. I haven't seen the new blue type stuff, but it looks promising from what they're saying about it on their own site.
>>
>>51604952
Is the high detail the new grey plastic ones, or you talking about the white ones?
>>
>>51604969
the opaque white ones that I seen apparently aren't available anymore, they have since been replaced by the new, grey-blue high-detail ones.
>>
>>51604872
>>51604952
I have three models from Hero Forge. One in High Detail, two in Grey Plastic.

The Grey Plastic is upsurdly sturdy, and it holds paint well.. When properly painted you can't even tell it's 3d printed, although I would say to go easy on washes just to be cautious. Even if you carefully file down all of the obvious bits, washes have a habit of creating strange shadows on their models.

The "High Detail" models are upsurdly fragile. I had comissioned a half-elf with the robot legs(had a character that walked around on prosthetics). The inside-knee joint was 1/4 of a mm thick, and snapped off with the gentlest of handling. Like I'm not even kidding when I say that it was MY BRUSH that snapped the fucking legs off. The fact that it even came to my house fully intact in the first place is the strongest evidence in the entire universe for god's existence.
>>
>>51605020
Awesome, thanks. My group has been playing for 5 years and want to finally start using minis and wanted to get ones that resemble their character as closely as possible.

Is there any reason to buy Citadel paints over Vallejo except for the meme names?
>>
>>51606716

1. If you need a specific color only Citadel makes.
2. If you like the pots, for things like washes.
3. For Citadel's unique paints that nobody else offers, such as Blood for the Blood God, Ryza Rust, etc.

I recently put all my Citadel paints into dropper bottles, and if you are buying a Citadel paint that you could have bought a similar color from from Vallejo, you are not getting a good deal. The pot sucks, it costs more money, and they give you way less paint than Vallejo. Citadel pot is 12ml and is never 100% full. Vallejo is 17 ml, costs less money, and is always filled to the top.

Only buy Citadel if you NEED their color or it's a special type of paint like the technical lines.
>>
>>51606716
I used to buy vallejo paints cos they're cheaper and have dropper bottles. Now I'm buying citadels: better coverage, never separates, no issuses of any kind (and I had terrible time with several colours from VMC)
>>
>>51604826

I hope I don't offend you, but you seem like a beginner and you've chosen some very hard colors to do. Silver and gold take a lot of shading to look right.

The white flames are a cool idea, but difficult to execute. Also you need to think your paints a lot.
>>
>>51606598

Amazing. I'd be proud to stomp those into the dust.

I prefer Vallejo for most colors, especially their military colors. For the more vibrant colors I sometimes use P3 paints, they seem to work pretty decently.

They really need a wash on the yellow.
>>
>>51607357
I used medium layer brush for this. 2 thin coats of averland sunset. I've painted and shaded blue, then applied yellow. Tricky part are headresses with very small stripes. But its easy if you let yourself spill on gold parts and just clean up after you're done
>>
I mounted my first batch of firewarriors before priming but now I want to paint the bases. Should I just pry their feet off with a knife and paint the base separately?
>>
>>51607660

Doesn't matter what it is, Citadel gives you less than 12 ml. I've poured unopened Citadel pots into 15 ml droppers and come up less than 75% full.
>>
>>51607660
GW's price for 12 is still much higher than everyone else's price for 17. Especially Army Painter, who is even cheaper than Vallejo.
>>
>>51604805
Very little on the brush, and hold it so the middle of the brush sweeps across the very edge. Looks like you're using the tip to highlight?
>>
>>51606098

I just imagine rotating gear platforms that rotate 45 degrees every turn to fuck with your positioning. Might be fun to implement
>>
>>51605048

Wait, that's finished? The yellow looks quite flat and jarring next to all that black, I would've done a heavy wash on that. Otherwise they look pretty interesting, nicely done.
>>
>>51608030
yeahhhh, no. If they'd do that, there would be a big lawsuit against them.

>>51608097
Ye I know, I use Vallejo for most of my stuff, I just didnt like the Army Painter colors when I tried them. Although my FLGS just got the big AP display, I might give them another shot.
>>
>>51605020
Sorry to be that guy, but I need to inform you that the word you are looking for is "absurd"
>>
>>51608540
It's because some of the paint sticks to the sides of the pot, and you can never get 100% of a liquid out of a container. That guy thinks it means that GW underfill their pots, despite it being flagrantly illegal.
>>
Would dry brushing tyranids be okay?, I was looking over my tyranid warrior I was painting and all his details really stick out over the shaded parts.
>>
>>51604199
What's that material you're using (the pinkish stuff)?
>>
>>51608626
Yes, particularly the exoskeleton. For best results layer the dry brushing up the same way that you would paint normal layers, starting with a darker highlight and progressing to both lighter tones and lighter dry brushing.
>>
>>51608660
Where should I focus the lighter tones too?

generally I'd say its not a good idea for chitin. You want to get a striking contrast (i.e violet on dark purple, lime green on dark green) and use a fine brush and draw thin lines starting at halfway down each plate and reaching the edge of the plate. Remember it's a living creature so it'll look like a nail with ridges catching the light. The arms and other parts are as simple as two thin coats of any colour and an appropriate wash maybe highlight at intersections.

Yeah the broodlord shoudl be fine, notice the striations of lighter blue at the edge of the back plates. The claws are a tricky one, personally I always like a bright red cos it's easy to paint and contrasts really well.

>>
>>51611405
Didn't see the conversation last thread, so I don't know the background, but tacky dip is usually down to using too much/not being gung-ho enough about shaking/spinning off the excess after application. You almost need one of those rotating brush cleaner things house painters use in buckets. Double enter or use hyphens for bullet points. I figured this out on my first visit and I'm not even a Redditor. Your inability to do something as simple as format a Reddit post stems from your atrocious typing habits, as can be seen in your terrible 4chan formatting, with its random lack of line breaks after the greentext yet inserting random double enter after two short sentences, one of which isn't even capitalized.

Lessons learnt thus far making this:

>Find the damn camera, phone sucks
>Use super glue for reeds, not PVA, they fall over too easily
>Pound shop resin is fairly straightforward to use and good value for money, but be careful applying inks, and with the acetone, because too much causes some crazy chemical reaction or something and it gets scary hot, it looked like some ghostbusters shit was going on
>Be more careful using spray paints, because you are filling details, you muppet
>Consider low angles while spraying because you missed several spots on the statue
>Realistic Water is super easy to use, but seems to reactivate PVA? Fingers crossed it just sets and goes clear but who knows
>Use lolly sticks to stir the resin and don't settle for a pound shop packet nail file, the weird little shiny rough bits seem to have gone in the resin
>Air-drying clay is good value for money and very fun
>Be extremely careful when damping fingers while using the clay on MDF, because it sucks into the board and warps it
>3mm plywood is probably a better option than 6mm MDF for basing materials
>Scibor stuff isn't bad at all
>Neither is the Citadel dry paint
>>

Is that a Custodes drowning in the pool?

It's an Easterling, you can see the arrow I stuck in him. Because I'd already messed him up during the basing, I just rushed him. Another lesson learnt.

The smaller pool in front was just Realistic Water, it seemed to shrink a tiny bit but applying a 2nd layer was acceptable. The main pool is 80% pound shop jobby, didn't add quite enough acetone for it to spread properly so just went over it with Realistic. I got five lots of the pound shop stuff but fried the last three lots worth this evening going OTT with the acetone.

Not that anon, but yeah, there's a lot of us in Britain and elsewhere in Europe, I'm just finishing up a set of exams myself, last one is Friday and is small, so thanks to Study Leave I have some free time, which was lucky.

We don't really have "Majors" here, or if we do we call them different stuff. Main thing for me is Biochemistry, anyway.
The houses vary wildly because Europe is actually quite big :). They're big and expensive down here in the British countryside and tiny and expensive up in London and such.
>>
>>51617222
It's not /super/ heavily based, but there's always something somewhere. Most houses have room to play in, considering you only really need a decently sized dining table and to properly display models, though our local store is tiny as fuck and often happens to have its tourneys overlap with Pokemon TCG or Yu-Gi-Oh release events, which really doesn't help at all.

Yeah, university. English studies with secondary focus on information science. Regular Bachelor. Got an exam in a Liberalism history class tomorrow that I only took to widen my spectrum even as a conservatively-thinking guy and the whole fucking thing is about a good dozen or so novel excerpts and poems to analyze, boring as all hell and I made a huge mistake even taking that course.

Not in Britain, for sure. Few university students study more than one subject, and many subjects (even Maths, English) can be left behind after age 16. We specialize far earlier than the American system.

Damn, I'm jealous. About to start a large, crazy project I am probably nowhere near ready for, and that would be a hell of a boon to me in England. Guess I'll order some regular plasticard and greenstuff and do the best I can, unless any anon knows a better source of parts to armour up my Mechanicum airship-whale and build the gondola/top deck.

Patterning it somewhat after the Leviathan from the books of the same name, but it's going to be my Archmagos Biologis' personal ride, using the Stormbird rules. Problem is that it will need a lot of greenstuff and scratch building, the Baneblade and possibly Stormraven kit I plan on buying for cannibalizing into it don't obviously have parts for everything and turning plasticard into everything is a real pain.

Going to have a top deck, armoured gondola/gantry running along the belly, possibly held to it by protruding ribs instead of conventional support struts. Amputate the lower jaw, build the command bridge up into the mouth cavity, probably.

Slightly difficult to find a suitable whale model, though. It's 55cm long, so 22 inches, and the models I find are either 15 or 30". This is probably not a common difficulty. :)

Describing projects not yet finished planning is hard....

It's taking a lot of planning so far, and I would sketch but I can't draw for shit. Done a couple shitty diagrams, and I imagine it will take a lot more work to actually do. Going to be fun, certainly. Been mostly trying to find a suitable base model for now, the only good one I found in design and size was cardboard.

I'll have a hunt about the internets, see what I can find. I imagine that will be simpler than whale-hunting.

I'd reccomend them just for the world-building honestly, Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld. WW1 alt universe where Darwin discovered genetic manipulation too and the Allies use bio-beasties against the Axis dieselpunk Titan knockoffs and such. Leviathan is that airship, they apparently have lots.

Gets a bit sidetracked by a slightly odd romance plot for a while, or maybe that was the main plot and I got sidetracked by the universe being awesome. Otherwise good.

Not strictly /wip/, but I finally got around to sorting my backlog/hoard/collection of hobby related stuff. The photo shows most of it. Salvage Baneblade, 4 flavours of Chimera chassis, Leman Russ, Rhinopred "looted wagon", Trukk, Battlewagon, old Rhino, some of my abandoned ideas, 2 Ork planes, a 1/48 F8F, a handful of metal models, including ol' Ghazzy, Grotsnik, a warboss, some old nobz and tankbustas. Also a load of Deffkoptas, Warbikes old and new, AoBR orks, two big boxes full of mostly complete sprues, about 2 kilograms of mostly Ork bits, including a ton of plane and tank parts, plus still wrapped Flash Gitz and a Blastajet. Not included is a box of poorly recast Ork bitz and other junk as well as a bag of various bases. All acquired because those deals were just too good to give up and "I really could use some of that in my army".
Want to go through a major chunk of that this year, mostly the vehicles and have 1850 points finished and fieldable by the end of April.

But... fuck, man. Every time I watch a tutorial the cloth bits intimidate the shit out of me. All that shading and blending... have to be super careful to get details under the cloaks...

So, is this actually a terrible idea or do you think I can do it? I know Duncan is a God and that thinning paints is a very good idea, but beyond that I literally don't even own a brush or paint yet.

Side question: favorite Forge World color scheme? I kinda want one that would work in 30k as a Secutarii now that you can run stock guys in that list so that I can get the most mileage out of my little robomen.

I took them as my first army, and I didn't know that Blessed Duncan was a thing then. It'll be a pain at points, but they're very, very nice models and have excellent rules. I'm still not that good, but they're passable and you can learn fast of you try at this, I've found.

Best FW: Xana II. Dark Mech best Mech, cool scheme and epic scorpion icons. Also has the only competent 30k Dark Archmagos so far, and he can beat the shit out of Horus Lupercal straight up. Scheme is pic related, with some sweet brass for the beep boops proper. Also FW is releasing a transfer sheet with all the symbols on soon so you don't have to freehand scorpions.

Second best: Metallica. You will learn to hate white even if it is sexy as hell, and even if your army has a soundtrack built in.

Third best: Ryza because plasma and also because orange.

>So, is this actually a terrible idea or do you think I can do it?

Ok. Here's the deal. You have a bunch of bad minis in you that you need to get out before you get good results. That isn't a bad thing! It means that you get to see solid improvement in your work and (hopefully) do something relaxing that you love.

If you're asking if you can paint your first mini like the one in the picture, the answer is no. Can you paint it so it looks reasonable and learn a lot? Absolutely!

Paint because you enjoy it and you want to get better and you simply can't go wrong. Paint because you want good results and you'll be frustrated every time.

Buy some models, a rattle-can of cheap primer, cheap brushes, and a few bottles of paint and try to follow the tutorials you've found. Don't get frustrated when it doesn't come out exactly right and learn from your mistakes.

You're starting a great journey. Approach it with the right mindset and enjoy!

What images do you use as an example for Xana II? Scoria has nine cohorts and the images in HH6 vary the scheme a bit page to page (and then House Malinax is it's own thing unto itself).

This is the one I've usually gone to.

Personally I use the Malinax scheme for my non-priesthood or Cybernetica, like the Reductor arty and the Triaros, but mix in some red armour panels occasionally.
Priesthood get dark red robes, brass metal and black trim on the robes.

Cybernetica use that brass picture of the Taghmata Scoria Thanatar involved in the Rangdan Xenocides, with brass armour, silver innards and I paint one shoulderpad red like in your pic.

So yeah, no single scheme, I mix and match the bits I like. My army is Dark Biologis and uses Cybernetica sparingly anyway, Reductor rules with some Vorax or a Vulturax thrown in sometimes.

>>
>>51620732
It is not bad. I would try put the ink in the recesses as shadows and not wash it overall. Try also some fine highlights (even with your base colour at this point), it will make the mini stand out.

Basing: I like basing my models before I prime them. Now it is somehow difficult to paint the terrain without getting paint on the robe.
If you decide for basing at this point, mix some sand (bird sand works perfect and it is cheap) with some PVA to a toothpaste consistency. Then use an old brush to put the mix on the base, taking care not to get sand on the legs or the robe. Let it dry overnight and next day paint it.
>>

Less freehand, more painting over raised metal after a wash.

Alright, here's my analysis:
Y'got moldlines and slip running from shoulder to legs, the side of is backpack, and the center of his left arm and chainsword with no visible attempt at cleaning them up. Take an X-Acto and greenstuff to them to level them out.
The white is splotchy as all hell, and you didn't work up any shadows. Start with a base layer of Celestra Grey or w/e the new light tan they got (Rakarth something?) and work up from there, leaving pure white for only edge highlighting.
Blonde hair isn't painted with yellow, instead use light brown and tan.
Looks like you didn't underlay your metallics with a darker color. Metallics are typically more transparent than other paints, so putting down a layer of black (or brown for gold) is important.
Paint eyes and open mouth black before applying any white. This will increase the contrast and improve the overall look in those areas.
No sign of washes.

>>
>>51623271
the cool mini or not forums used be a pretty good place to hang around actually. Haven't been there for a while, but just because the ratings and ebay auctions had issues with sniping doesn't mean the community isn't helpful for improving your painting. You can just ignore the rating side of things and post a paintlog of your own.
In any case loads of very good painters around to five feedback.

If you just want a nice community try lead-adventure. They seem like a friendly bunch.

Not if you're using a good, actual primer. Plastic glue can melt through regular paint but primer is a lot tougher and chemically bonded in some cases.

You can scrape off the primer with a knife, or use blue poster tack or other masking putty or even masking tape to cover glue points before you paint.

Seriously it is so easy and almost retard proof.

Do the metals and the leather at the same time
>Base (Leadbelcher for metal, a brown of your choice for leather/gun)
>Wash (earthshade)
>Drybrush the metal with a lighter colour.

Then just paint the cape your colour of choice, and wash it....maybe highlight.

You can paint and paint well very easily. Go to your local store for a tutorial if you can. The GW paints make it retardly easy.

Very nice, I really like the armour really has a nice iridescent effect.

If you want any recommendations to add to it I would suggest painting the little cloth wrap around the topknot the same colour as the loincloth instead of the same colour as the hair as it breaks it up nicely.

Additionally you could very finely edge highlight the loincloth with a lighter colour like palid wych flesh or a light grey to sharpen up the cloth making it less flat.

But these are just optional enhancements, definitely fine as they are.
