Repost from last thread. Looking for ways to turn greyfax into a rape cannon with witch fire. Is there any way for imperial armies to consistently lower the leadership of enemy units?

For those who don't know, witch fire is range 18, you roll 3d6 and subtract enemy units ld, they take that many wounds with no saves allowed. They get invulnerable saves tho I believe

Asked at the tail end of last thread

Are there any leaks for the new eldar formations that are more clear. Going by the preorder bundles, I own everything needed to make the reborn warhost, soul bound vanguard, and ynneads net. The war host and vanguard, with upgrades, add up to 2000 points. Looks a bit weak without more transports though
>>

Khorne pls go. We only follow the greater good here
>>
>>51600956
Are slaves trusted with their armor? In the case of Word Bearers at least their armor simply changes due to exposure to the Warp. Apparently they hardly (if ever) remove their armor and eventually it fuses to their body and melds with it.

The warhost is just the "units from any eldar faction" detachment, much like the castellans (assumedly)
The warhost gives re-rolls on the warlord table, stubborn, no shooting morale tests if you end the phase within 7" of a friendly unit, and 2 units can soulburst from a single death, instead of just
>>
>>51600930
Well, its mainly a matter of finding a theme and sticking to it.

For example, part of my Chaos Warband is really focused on vehicles, machines, and tech heresy, so all of them have meltaguns where the option exists. All the various squads and vehicles stem from the Warp Smith's plans.
>>
>>51600956
While it HUGELY depends on the warband in question, Chaos Marines generally adorn their armor with their trophies and gear personally, as letting a slave touch their trophies is absolutely unthinkable. Most also still venerate their armor and wargear to some degree, simply because they basically live in it. Slaves may do basic maintenance, but they don't do any of the "big things".

Again, though, depends hugely on the warband. Some warbands may view their gear as tools and little else, allowing slaves to do pretty much all of the actual work.
>>
Across all codices, what is the most effective Terminator unit/loadout/tactic?
>>
>>51601083
Spamming single man Deathwatch termites with various special weapons or melta powerfists
>>
>>51601083
Just the unit on it own?
I'm partial to say deathwing terminators, fearless can sometimes hurt them but with split fire and twin-linked on deep strike they're quite effective.

Course i'm less familiar with terminators outside them and blood angels.
>>
>>51601083
Using deathwing knights as a shooty unit.
>>
>>51601083
Probably death wing, most cases shooting load outs, and I think they're most effective at creating distractions or supporting fire behind the front line
>>
>>51601083
They vary too much between marines, CSM, and deathwatch.

For CSM- MSU with 3 combi-meltas and axes to hopefully pop a tank and earn their points back.

Marines- TH/SS deathstar

Deathwatch- shooty

Are Daemon Princes allowed to retain whatever position they had in a warband if they wish?

Like if a Chaos Sorcerer turned Daemon Prince wishes to retain his (subordinate) position as his Chaos Lord's adviser, is his Lord going to go for that or is he getting the boot in favor of someone else due to how fickle Daemons are?
>>
>>51601050
I'd like to find a theme but It feels like flexibility is too important to commit around.
>>
>>51601185
Depends on the position they want, i would not trust a daemon prince to be the head chef.
>>
>>51601185
A lot of princes have trouble maintaining their form in real-space. In the IW omnibus, the chaos lord that ascends starts to fade into the warp.

>>51601185
If the Chaos Lord is the leader of his respective warband and becomes a daemon prince then yes, he can most certainly use the great power he's been given to continue his rule over the army.

But as for the situation you described, I doubt any right minded Chaos Lord is going to want his second in command/adviser/whatever to continue sticking around after he's been given the immense power of daemonhood. That'll just lead to him with a warped claw through his back at some time or another.

When you oversee an army of bloodthirsty killers that are seeking the favor of daemon gods it doesn't do well to have others just as or more powerful than you right below you on the chain of command.

He's the Red Angel.

The Red Angel is a Daemon of Chaos which during the Horus Heresy possessed the body of Apothecary Meros of the Blood Angels during the Battle of Signus Prime.
The daemon was formed from the distilled rage of Brother-Captain Tagas, who had been believed lost on Murder[2a], which formed sentience in the process.

First Chaplain Erebus had planned to have Sanguinius become the daemon's host, with Kyriss the Perverse offering to free the Blood Angels of the Red Thirst forever if Sanguinius took the ragefire into himself, but Meros instead sacrificed himself so that Sanguinius would not.

The act freed the Blood Angels of the rage that had befallen them, but only a fraction of Meros remained alive, enough to tormented by his decision. The Red Angel admitted that the Chaos Gods had underestimated Sanguinius's resolve, but the Great Angel vowed that Meros would be spared one day, for no Blood Angel would die in silence.

IU'm a huge fan of the death guard termies.

Put them in the formation and they're t5, 2+/5++ 5+ FnP rerolling 1s.
Too tough to be chipped down with small arms fire, over a 50% chance to ignore an ap2 wound and even strength 10 ap2 has 1/3 chance to be ignored.

Give them power axes (maybe a hidden chain fist) and combi-plasmas/meltas and go to town.

Oh, and fearless and leadership 10 for free.

So according to old fluff, during the final showdown between Horus and the Emperor, after Horus struck down Sanguinius, a lone member of the Imperial Army, a mortal man, Ollanius Pius, stepped in front of Horus, a terrifying-neigh immortal demigod of darkness, to protect his emperor, and was immediately torn to shreds. Allegedly, this act of sacrifice, and Horus' act of cruelty to completely obliterate a mortal so callously gave Emps the final push he needed to overcome any feelings of doubt he might have had in order to do what he had to and destroy Horus. The story got retconned a few times later to be a terminator and then a Custodes, which is stupid, and then there was a weird attempt to make Ollanius a perpetual with a huge backstory, and now it's in a weird state where it's not really clear what happened, as the various retcons to the events surrounding the actual fight have made it increasingly unlikely that Ollanius would have been anywhere near the fight. Pic related is the most recent take on it and one I like.

Whether it happened or not, Ollanius is venerated as a saint by the Imperial Guard for being a perfect example of what a guardsman does, dying to hold the line against all odds.

Personally he's probably my favorite bit of fluff in 40k, it's Humanity Fuck Yeah, but in a way that's not obnoxious wanking about how humans are physically superior to everything else. It's just a simple man, far weaker physically than the forces opposing him, conquering any fears or doubts, and stepping up to fight, no matter how futile it might be.
>>
>>51603175
This story is also what got me into actually playing 40k, because I wanted a Guard army.

The reason for this, which literally everyone forgets, is because at the same time the showdown was retconned to take place on the Vengeful Spirit and not Horus' sekrit bunker of doom. Pius being on the flagship makes zero sense with the current telling of the events, so he was replaced.

It's the IG in a nutshell.

>A battle may see the deployment of millions, yet time and again it is a single heroic company who carry their charge to secure a crucial gatehouse or pivotal objective. Squads of desperate men battle impossible odds, with nothing but their courage and faith driving them to hold the line while their valuable betters are evacuated to safety. Every day that the Imperium endures, Imperial Guardsmen stand in the face of beasts more hellish than their worst nightmares. Men charge screaming alongside their comrades into the mouth of hell, lasguns spitting death at their foe even as xenos munitions tear bloodied holes in the human ranks. In a galaxy of never-ending warfare what makes the perpetually outmatched men of the Imperial Guard so admirable is that they know near constant fear, yet they lift their weapons, plant their feet, and fight on regardless. Their lives may be short and brutal, their sacrifices insultingly thankless, but it is because of the Imperial Guard that the Imperium continues to weather the storm of these dark times.

>>51603175
If we're being technical about it, the OLDEST fluff has the Emperor taking a company of Imperial Fists into the final assault against Horus' command bunker on earth, during adeptus titanicus/space marine days. That's where the crux badge first got any significance beyond "a generic symbol of veterancy". It was to mark the fact that they were the unit who ended the siege, which is also why only space marines have it.

Pius as a mythic figure is introduced later (within a couple of months) in a white dwarf article alongside the release of the plastic Imperial Guard box, but was only ever present in that one instance until FFG put out that little blurb, and later Black Library with their perpetual uber-soldat abomination. All that's known about him is he supposedly took a shot for the emperor during one of the attacks on the imperial command center.

Then, shortly after that white dwarf came out, the Realm of Chaos: Lost and the Damned was released, which printed Bill King's siege of terra short stories. In those GW changed the location of the final fight to Horus' space ship, the Vengeful Spirit, and had a space marine terminator interrupting the confrontation.

That stood until GW decided to reprint those short stories with a Custodes awkwardly edited into place instead, which is the current version of events as of now.

I don't really get the fan canon and rabid appeal that's propped up about pius as some sort of HURRRG BALLS OF STEEEL LOOK HORUS DIRECTLY IN THE EYES AND TELL HIM TO FUCK OFF ubermensch. At least until Know No Fear ruined him, he was just a dude who got killed in indeterminate circumstances, propped up by the guard as a saint to keep them happily jumping in the meatgrinder.

When Chaos Space Marines and Cultists summon demons, do they need to bind the demon to their will? This seems counterproductive, because demons don't like binding, and will do anything permitted to work against their masters. It would seem that it would be more permissible to bind a demon of another god to your will. Theres tons of art of chaos marines walking together with demons, but a lot of fluff sources seem to indicate that demons will never submit willingly to mortals.

How doe this go for stuff like Possessed Marines, and bands like the wordbearers? Do they just summon the demon without any binding and let it go free? Is there any fluff precedent to indicate the demon wont just kill the people who summoned it?

Tl;dr: Will demons every work will willingly with chaos mortals?

They summon the Daemon, and bind them so that they are forced to recognize friend or foe. The Word Bearers do bind the more violent daemons like Bloodletters, as they will attack any on sight without being binded, whereas Daemonettes will go straight after any Eldar if possible. Y'get what I'm saying?
>>
>>51603168
The cultists are easy, as nightlords still usually use servants on there ships, so you can justify it as that. Helbrutes.. not so much, unless you fluff it as he got horribly mutated and went insane, and the whole warband hates him, you could do this with possessed as well. If you feel like it, feel free to ally in Furies, as in the lore they hang out on night lord ships.

Honestly it depends on your taste and your warband

I would suggest avoiding the following

Hellbrutes(Just use FW chaos dreadnaughts, get the night lord one)
Cult Daemons(Meaning aligned)
Any marks(You should be running traitor legion rules, so you shouldn't be able to have these anyway)
Deamon princes(Worst fate a night lord could suffer)
Deamonic Machines(Since they are tainted by the warp, however you could make your warband more of a "use chaos for shit but don't worship them" thing)
Cult Troops(Obvious reasons)
Obliterators/Mutilators(Unless you lore it as groups of marines with weapons, such as Pic related)

Things I highly suggest:

Raptors/Warptalons(Lore them as the remaining Night Raptors, and sure warptalons are mutated by the warp, but they are perfect for night lords games wise, with the blinding deep strike thing)
Terminators(Lore them as the remaining Atramentar)
Chosen ( Lore them as the remaining Terror Squads)
And finally, Basic marines! Your bread and butter. Not to mention all the other vehicles which are very fluffy. Go crazy man, as I fellow Night Lord player I hope you got some good info out of this.
>>
>>51603447
They're okay for fielding hordes of dudes with shitty little 2 point popguns. Which is cool and there's a place for that, but that's not a sniper rifle. When the FBI needs to take out a hostage taker, do you think they stick 2 dozen guys outside his window hoping to get at least 2 precision shots (who cares where all those misses go?) so they can hopefully get one past his ballistic vest?

Hostage situation is a bit, completely different than a relatively large sized battle. Sniper rifles don't really have a place in 40k style battles. They are more about assassination. If you wanted to have sniper rifles be more "accurate" they would be a pre-game roll of dice to see if your sniper hit an important character before the battle began. That's stupid and bad.

As they are now, they are fine. Maybe they could have increased range to 48" and maybe Precision shot could trigger on a 5+, but they are still good.

There's plenty of planets for the average joe to do all kinds of things in. Obviously the 'main' story is going to have literal gods battling each other, but the whole point of building such a vast setting is that you have plenty of room to have your dudes have their own adventure and stories.

You don't have to decide the fate of the galaxy to be a satisfying story. Leave that stuff to the super humans, you just focus on protecting the little space rock you call your homeworld.

GGA! Nice. I am doing a similar conversion for Rough Riders. I played a game this time and remembered to take pictures after I set up, but forgot to take them the rest of the time. I haven't painted too much yet in terms of infantry, but I'm getting there. Had to do a lot of stripping old minis and building and shaving new ones.

It was a 1k game against Tyranids. Sorry for the blurry picture. I also thought the Tyrant was cute peeping on the Conscripts. Anyway, I ended up getting beat pretty bad because he stole the initiative and had some good rolling early on, especially for his Tervigon. He ended up with like 70-80 gants quickly after. The Punisher tank was a lot of fun though. Bringing its guns to bear, it deleted the flying Tyrant mid air. Shame the Tyrant also messed up my Wyvern and Chimera vets first.

>>
>>51604229
That's depressing. I know how that goes. There's another game store nearby that sells GW products, but it's like 1 box per army and the rest is order up. What does your store sell besides GW products? Or is it a GW store?

>>51604233
Mid-west USA. Yours probably has a similar layout I bet because I've seen quite a few pictures of other GW stores and I feel like it's from the store I go to every time.
>>
>>51604257
>>51604259
It's an independent shop.

The top floor is all MTG.

Downstairs there are two shelves of 40k, but there's like, 3 different boxes for each army (if that).

The only GW connected store I know of is all the way in Franklin, you'd think it would be here in Boston, but no.
>>

Practically never if the fluff is true to the tabletop in any fashion. Actual tyrannic war veterans would just be the techmarines who man the thunderfire cannons, which are the bane of tyranids everywhere.

When was the last time you ever lost an entire company to tyranids? How often do you lose any more than three dudes to tyranids? Campaign-wise, unless your dudes are instant death'd(which tyranids are straight up incapable of causing on your dudes outside of melee), a marine would only be "dead" dead after a battle if they were to like fail a toughness test.

I was once in a small campaign where I had only 145 dudes available to me. I had to track casualties and determine who goes out of action and adjust my lists accordingly. Tyranids were my favourite thing to go up against because if I do everything right, I will only lose AT MOST like 3 dudes a battle against them. Whereas if I spent my time going after the CSM, I was losing 30 dudes a battle.

>you just focus on protecting the little space rock you call your homeworld.
Every guardsman knows, deep down inside, that the "The Emperor is counting on you, Guardsmen!" is a crock of shit despite what the regimental priest and commissar say, but each guardsman also is able to hope, deep down inside, that it really is true, that they actually do have the chance of being the nail that kicks out the shoe that kicks out the horse from under the Black Crusade and preserves the Imperium.

Removing that hope is just rude.

Well, thanks for the detailed response. I forgot to mention in my first post that I don't really play the game too much. It's mostly as a collection, though I'll pull from it whatever I need if I happen to play a game.

I think I'll stick with some squads of regular marines, chosen, terminators and raptors. I'm hoping to grab the Night Lords conversion kit to scatter a few stupid bat wing helmets around my squads and maybe some old armour from the HH line. I might even mix in some loyalist armor bits, inspired by their scavenger ways.

Yea, or maybe Erebus pulled an Abaddon and refused it because he doesn't want to lose his soul and free will. Not sure about that though, Word Bearer tend to revere Daemonhood far above even other Chaos worshipers, it's just about the holiest thing to them.
>>
>>51605415
I think that might be the case, since both Erebus and Kor Phaeron wish to replace Abaddon.
>>
Got a weird train of thought.

I've got the start of a Genestealer Cult army; looking to do a Cult Insurrection based around a Cavalcade and Subterranean Uprising. Looking to have the Patriarch be my only actual Genestealer, mostly because I like the cultists themselves more than the 'Stealers.

HOWEVER, the Hive Tyrant is my favorite model in the game. I want to include one, possibly as my Warlord. Story-wise, the Tyrant survived a losing battle or his spore ended up in the wrong place or something; whatever the circumstance, he ended up with a Genestealer cult and he's their idol, hiding beneath a city or something. I'm making this up as I go, so take that for what it's worth.

Anyway, for the Hive Tyrant... What's the best way to do this without going unbound? What should a (preferably) Walk-Rant have to support a GC army? How do I field it without any other real Tyranids, except for the Patty and maybe Tyrant Guard? I guess Rippers work too, given they could pass for Tyranid vermin.
>>
Can you use chaos contemptors in 40k? And if so, are they worth it?

It's because he's proportional and Space Marines aren't. FW had a choice between three options:
>Make Primarchs scaled up Space Marines
>Make Primarchs much larger than Space Marines
>Make Primarchs the same height or slightly taller than Space Marines, but skinnier and with smaller heads

Option 1 doesn't work because no one wants an ugly blocky mess for their hundred dollar demigod, and option 3 doesn't work because it won't look impressive next to the rest of the army and ruins the potential for conversions.
>>
>>51602005
this image looks so shit.

also wherent the tau supposed to be souless and therefore invulnerable to this kind of assasins?
>>
>>51606558

Yeah, he's still god height to humans but at least now he's not building sized like the 40k version. Normal humans go up to marines chest (if the miniatures were properly scaled) while the marine mini goes up to guilliman's own chest. In 40k, the marines go up to 40k guilliman's groin. That would make humans only go to guilliman's knee.

Blanks usually cause problems to living things with souls, not souless creatures.

incorrect, why do you think they cant be fucking possesed by daemons?
Back in the day some guy made an awesome possesed crisis suit conversion on the website but it was widely critiqued for being anti fluffy since Tau are not psychic beings.

Blanks and nulls affect psychic beings because they are their anathema but Tau arent so why shuould they be afflicted?

>Tau and the Warp

>The Tau have no psykers whatsoever among their ranks, for their souls are so feeble they barely register in the Warp at all. They are largely oblivious to the malevolent forces of Chaos, who in turn take no interest in the crumbs that are Tau souls. No Tau has ever been corrupted by Chaos.

>Because they have no Navigators, Tau ships cannot travel through the heart of the Warp like Imperium ships do. Instead, they make shallow "dives" into the Warp, a much slower form of travel. Because they have no astropaths, the Tau are reliant on messenger ships to communicate across the stars. These handicaps greatly slow the expansion of the Tau Empire.

I've faced a couple of Knights at my FLGS. My Ork tactic is to send some bikers with klaws or killsaws up and punch them to death.

For some reason, this has worked extremely well for me up to this point.
>>
>>51606837

Blanks and Pariahs have negative souls if anything. Just look at Servitors, Obliviates(in the lore), Necrons, they're various types of undead automatons, no soul per se but they don't block out the warp or anything.

Tau are basically one step up from that, they kinda have souls but not very big ones. They're literally pusillanimous. Tau players, on the other hand, lack souls entirely.

490 points.
>>
>>51606902

You can pretty much take any detachment with any other detachment. And you don't need to take an "allied detachment" to take allies either, it's just there for a mini-CAD if you want to bring allies along without committing to a full CAD. For example you could bring an imperial guard artillery company to support a space marine first company strike force, and you'd be just fine.
>>
>>51606902
Typhus is pretty bad man. You'd be better off spending less points for better zombies using Renegades and Heretics and get a daemon prince with wings or some form of screamerstar

Yes, exactly. Finally someone who knows what the fuck he's talking about.

Besides, the original argument sparked over how the Culexus could've gotten in undetected, since all these fags don't know about etherium and its effect on the powers of perception of being both living and mechanical. In short, memefags know nothing, as usual.

That's not all, what is an "Immediate Exterminatus" supposed to mean? Exterminatus means wiping out the entire planet, the Imperium doesn't just drop them left and right.

Also why are Arbites requesting exterminatus? If Arbites are failing, wouldn't the next step be to send in the actual military?

They've also found the influence of Nurgle on Holy Terra before in the years post Heresy, but nobody called an Exterminatas in for that.

Or for the fact that the planet has probably seen more Daemonic activity than any other world currently held by Mankind.

Am I the only one that is seeing all this Gathering Storm releases as a return to Herohammer? It feels like the power creep is solely reliant on special named characters now and they have become auto-includes in relevant armies. I mean it started with Celestine and Cawl and it looks like it's going to be the same with the Ynnari.

As someone that likes playing fluffy without named character this likely means my chances of not losing every game from now on has slimmed considerably. And I'm already used to not winning shit. Mandatory formations I could deal with as I would still have some leeway; but I just have an aversion for named characters.
>>
>>51608034
Not really, Anon.
>>
>>51608034
I dunno. My local meta still hangs people who use special characters from their balls.
>>
>>51608034
Well, when the special character where non demi god (ie, some random Chapter master/Captain), it was possible to sort of include them in your army fluff under an other name/background.
Harder to do with a primarch.
>>
>>51608107
Are you implying my chapter master Guilty Robotman isn't as good as some no-name ultramarine primarch?
>>
>>51608067
The people I used to play with were all from the 3e/4e era and still remembered the days when you had to ask for your opponent's permission to field named characters, so they were particularly bitter about it at first, but then caved in because Herohammer, and one of them is a disgusting Eldar WAACfag that has no shame of his own hypocrisy.

It has to be said that some special characters are nothing special, others are just bad, but lately it seems like they're going back to the "stupidly OP auto-include in every army that can take them" fad, and that's just fucking sad.

People jumped on that resin canoness like rabid beasts even though her rules were... Well, pretty bad. Yet I get the feeling that the GW design teams thinks "Broken rules = more sales" so they're betting everything on fucking broken characters to make them sell like hotcakes.

Yet further proof that GW has its head so far up its arse everyone thinks it's a ventriloquist.
