My favourites are moth, spider and crab people.

Yes, I have a planet that is completely filled with a hivemind species.

They're called humans. Because humans are basically one massive ape colony that have evolved to work like ants. *mic drop*

Yes, I pretty unabashedly use beast races. Mostly as a way to create a large number of races to make things feel chaotic. The big three arthropods in setting are the butterflies, bees, and spiders. Bees are the most civilized. Alien to humans, but they don't treat humans as prey to be killed on sight like the other two do.

There were crab people, but they were wiped out by a hiveminded man-o-war the size of a small country.

>Fomyr workers stand slightly shorter than humans, their height ranging from 4'10'' to 6', with only queens standing taller. They resemble nothing more than four-armed humanoid ants, covered in a tough exoskeleton that may be dark red, yellow, or black. Their faces feature antennae they use to inspect anything that catches their attention, as well as mandibles that house a fearsome bite but are still capable of speech. Fomyr voices sound unsettling to other races, not just because of the chittering noises they produce, but because Fomyr speak without any emotion or inflection whatsoever. They rely on pheromones to communicate these subtle cues, and most other races cannot pick up on them without magical aid. Finally, they have a large stinger with which they can inject painful venom.

>Nearly all Fomyr are biologically female. The only male members of the species are the princes, recognizable by their wings and generally smaller stature. Though all workers are female, very few are capable of reproduction. Fomyr queens produce pheromones that prevent other female reproductive organs from developing, though rarely some workers can resist this and lay their own eggs. However, disrupting the colony in this way is grounds for exile.

>Though Fomyr queens are necessary for the continuation of the race and have high status in Fomyr society, they have surprisingly little political power. Instead, a village or nest is very close to a true democracy in which all members have at least some say. Because all workers are sisters and are fanatically devoted to the survival of their colony, disagreements are uncommon once a consensus begins to form. However, what all Fomyr agree on and what is the best course of action are not always the same, and dissenting voices eventually give in.

Stuff from my current setting notes.

no, she seems to have power over some sort of stable time loop, in which the adult main character, upon asking her why he got scared and ran away from her as a child, is told he never ran away, realizes he's a child, and runs away, scared.
My understanding is there is a sequel, but I haven't read it yet. Honestly, if they just cut out the porn part of it, it would make for an interesting horror short all on its own.
>>

Actually, I think I recall a reading a bit of the sequel, but I might be mistaken so someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it delves more into how the moth is destroying his life, in one loop driving him to kill his mother as a child for trying to take him away from the moth. That might be me remembering something else though, it's been a while since I looked into this.

I've been trying to come up with an idea for an alien race of psychic bug people. A big part of their gimmick I suppose is their ability to integrate various cybernetic augmentations to their bodies, a major being a sort of speaker collar because they don't have vocal cords or mouths to articular words with. Another part of their gimmick is that they are genderless until they eat a special plant that triggers their change into male or female in which case they mate but the downside is the plants poisonious effects will kill them soon afterwards. Over time they have managed to create various medicines from this plant that allows them to access their psychic powers which can only be done by being a gender. Males become Dune like Navigators and females go to be part of their theocratic government having strong telekentic and telepathy powers
>>
I have a race of cockroach people that compete with dwarfs for resources underground, and when above ground have to scuttle about underneath gigantic scaly parasols. I scared the shit out of my players when the one they were poking at stood up to its full height of two-and-a-half meters and started beating on them with its umbrella.

You know, most of the weird nightmare stories I see on /tg/ I assume are completely made up for the entertainment of the board, but I have genuinely seen a person bring their kitsune waifu to a game as their PC concept. This was 5e, and not Pathfinder, but the point remains. Also, the character was kind of sort of awful at combat which resulted in the player switching to a different concept after a few levels. Don't multiclass Cleric and Warlock.

Yes. They are called Inkrazi. And concept is little retarded. It's a shapeshifting insectoids, who have cluster hiveminds. By hiveminds I mean that there's individuals, who control from 4 to hundreds of buglike creatures of various anatomy and physiology, which are fit most for their tasks. Tasks can vary from mining minerals or just killing shit to being a huge fucking biochemical database. Individuals are called Cores and bugs are called Limbs because in mind of this "hive" they are whole, but Cores are hosts to the personality. Cores are pure insectoid shapeshifters who can switch their form by entering a pupa, weawing cocoon around them.
Limbs guard cocoon and gather resources %%meat, corpses, sometimes they by themselves become a dish, if destined by Core for it%% for a feast, which will be served to their master and its relatives. They are reproducing by giving a several Limb a good neural system and letting it off the pheromone leash %%or not, they have proxies for spying and shit%%. They are wealthy as Mammoth, but was hellishly wrecked by guys who was trying to understand how Inkrazi function and transmit signals from main specimen to its henchmen.
Also, they impregnate themselves because of parthenogenesis and can give a birth to shitload of cannon fodder. %%It still didnt help when curious mad-mage-scientists came%%
I know that this shit is not sexy and maybe little overcomplicated.

I've been ruminating on a setting including moth people who claimed in their creation myth that they were banished from the moon and the spirits of good people go there after death. Thoughts?
>>
>>51599107
Giant beetle-men that serve as stewards of the wi of the Divine. They reside in massive termite-like mounds that delve deep enough to grip the places where the boundaries between worlds muddy and obscure, and high enough to touch the heavens themselves. The tallest tower of each world houses a Prophet Queen, and is the watchpost upon which the Sun guards planets.
They as a rule do not often interact with other mortals. When a world is first made and they are seeded on it, they teach the mortal natives of the laws the Divine have made for their world as well as their purpose. Once the task is done, they return to their job of passively observing and guarding the boundaries of the world. Beyond this point, they only emerge when they must punish mortals or deliver portents. Because of this, bands of these are considered to be omens of terrible events.

Are super telepathic, use their gifts to herd the adults, enslave the wildlife to their bidding, and to smooth over relations with other races on account of being parasitoid slaver worms.

Preta: All consuming cyborg space gypsy locusts on eternal quests of self-perfection. Really into the whole transhumanism (transbeetlism?), with each one being a more or less unique amalgamation of mechanical and biological material. Travel in semi-literal motherships made of the conjoined forms of the troupes most respected members, and basically strip wherever they go of any usable material. Generally willing to not tear apart you/your home/your family/etc for spare parts if you can talk to them about it, but tend to be hard to communicate with.

Amala: Mantis-wasp-butterflies from a super low grav world. Very tall, spindly, and delicate, to the point that they collapse and die under anything heavier than .5G. Are renown artists, sculpting intricate mandalas and spirographs out of near-monomolecular strands of resin secreted from their nymph stage. Also fantastic dancers

>Goes from moth people to crusty people things to humanoids in armor
Why even bother hiring concept artists
>>

I posted mothman because that always comes to mind when I hear "moth people." Probably proper moth-y. Crunch-wise it'd involve some sort of bonus to navigating when the moon is visible (since actual moths do this afaik, it's why they're drawn to light.) Darkvision, physically delicate but deeply steeped in ritual and otherwise a big fan of mysticism. I was considering writing two racial variants but it seemed too convoluted.

To figure out what wouldn't work in a shooting game that has to run on a PS3.

To be fair, the reason the Hive look like they do is because they're dead. They still have insect aspects to them and theoretically could look like the concept art before the event which made them what they currently are.

Possible reason why they went away from that route is to make the Hive distinct from the Fallen, who are at least insect like in appearance.

VvvKree- Biochauvanist federation of hive minds from another arm of the milky way, in bad standing with nearly everyone else due some rogue bioweapons preceding them and wrecking shit. Can more or less shapeshift via entering a chrysalis state and rejiggering their genetics, and rely on that in lieu of technology. Think traditional technologies are crutches for civilizations too stupid to figure out biotech

Madhupa and Pipelika: Two descendants of the same ancestral race of arthropods. The Pipelika are 2-3' tall, four legged pseudo-ants, who's front limbs end in clusters of manipulator hairs/spines. Have a number of different, specialized varieties naturally, which laid the groundwork for a caste system when they got smarter. More castes got added later via genetic tinkering.
Eventually an enclave of radical mutants throws a coup against the establish system, and fired up the super illegal exowombs they'd got to turn a minor rebellion into a flood of insurgents. They drove their forebears out of their home system and several neighboring ones, scattering the Pipelika to their neighbor's territories and leaving the Madhupa to deal with a complete lack of infrastructure and severe genetic degradation..

I like these, really creative. Sounds like the Amala are the friendly race, right? Or at least don't have any obvious violent and potentially lethal quirks like the others. Do they get along with humans? Do any of the others?
>>
>>51637452
Ish. Humans are kind of newcomers to the galactic scene, and have a horrible reputation due to generally embracing all kinds of technologies and ideologies that the regional superpower considers somewhere between "Morally questionable and certainly dangerous if left unchecked" and "SWEET SPACE JESUS YOU PEOPLE DO WHAT?". Sol's under quarantine as a result, but humans still slip out to smuggle shit and make trouble.

The Neurax view humanity the same way they view nearly every other race: they're either clients or they're chattel. A fair segment of them are very interested in humanity's mind uploading tech as a way to circumvent the loss of self that accompanies metamorphosis.

The Preta are sympathetic to humans, at least the segment of it that's embraced transhumanism. They're still a menace to anything that's not nailed down, but they generally plead mankind's case to the few people who'll listen, and also bring goods and info into the quarantine zone with them.

The Amala are generally the friendliest of the ones listed, but like the Pipelika/Madhupa and the VvvKree they've only heard of them as the monstrous bodystealing parasites from some backwater world. They'd probably appreciate humans love of art and aesthetics, though.

Okay, so I'm interested now. What's the deal with the humans here? Sounds like we're up to something fun in your setting.

Also, as an aside, when typing the previous sentence in this post I tried "sounds like we're going full von Neumann" and "sounds like we're going full immortal cyberbrain uploads" before settling on "something fun", and had an abrupt flash of introspection about why the bugs might find us unsettling.

The usual stuff. Transapient AI overlords, grey goo, moon brians, collective consciousnesses, programmable matter. That sort of thing. We've gotten lucky in that most of the AIs were either disinterested or ostensibly friendly, but even the ones that were actively hostile were basically extinction level events by themselves. We basically made yandere Saberhagen berserkers, a contagious form of SHODAN, and flesh warpers that make the tzimisce and the Qu look tame, to name a few.
>>
>>51638119
Sounds good to me. The bugs need to relax, we've got it under control.

Arthropods are Clickies, not furries.

JOEL THE CLICKERS ARE COMING (but they're just friendly bug dudes)

Yes, 5 cyborg catgirl space pirates and a wizard. They fight crime in space. Space crime.

They're just a running gag, thought.

Which of those are arthropods?

The wizard. But don't tell anyone.

>>51599107
Man, I remember when I worked with some anons on a setting called Bug World.

No standard races, just arthropods of all kind.

BTW, I never got to finish that story with the hornet bounty hunter that discovered a cordyceps cult.

>Had a setting with Giant intelligent moths, they weren't anthro though, just the size of moose and as smart as people. The didn't used mostly smell and sight based communication and relied on a kind antenna sign language for humanoid races. they lived on the far side of the continent where no one ever ventured cause of a magic barrier.

>So the party decides they are going to go over and explore the lands near the barrier but don't wanna walk cause they are lazy. Turns out Elves have these giant flying moths they can ride in exchange for all the good adventuring they have done. They get over there and for plot they destroy the barrier with a plot fight.

>Turns out the moths and other races there put up that barrier cause the elves were dicks thousands of years ago and didn't want to deal with their slavery bullshit. So the party rolls up, destroys the magic barrier, riding these violent retarded inbred moths that can't speak and are walking warcrimes. I believe they vowed to return to the Elven lands and let them know these are people you are domesticating into mounts and should probably stop, and the elves told them to fuck off.
