I want to dare the jump into sculpting, and wonder how much I should spent for grey silicon clay shapers.

There are offers online for 5 piece sets for like 4€, but then there are single ones for over 14€. Is there a huge quality drop along the price range?

One could argue that this thread would belong in /diy/, but really all the green stuff nuts are guaranteed to be around here, so there.

Also, general green stuff thread I guess.

Those things are ment for acrylic painting not sculpting
Go to /ic/ or /toy/ if you are serious about sculpture

They are commonly used for sculpting as well.

As a beginner, cheap tools are more than enough. The most important tools you'll use are a metal sculpter and probably a scalpel, the other stuff is nice to have but supplementary. Get yourself a nice all-purpose metal sculpting tool first, or maybe a small and cheap set.

It's important to keep your putty from being sticky. Water works to a point, stay the fuck away from moisturizer like some idiots reccomend. Yes, it'll keep your shit from being sticky, but you won't ever glue or stick anything else on that.
Use talcum powder instead, it's the stuff of dreams and magic. It keeps the putty from being sticky and you can just wash it off and let the piece dry for a few seconds to make it sticky again.

Different kinds of putty are good for different kinds of pieces. There's a reason most sculpters use green, grey and brown stuff. That's largely irrelevant for a beginner, but be aware that it's harder to get a good edge with green stuff for example.

If I were to get into sculpting busts and things what would I use?

The model guys I've seen use some grey putty for 3 ups and large monsters and things, what is it?

They are hugely useful for sculpting

It's a different sort of two part epoxy than green stuff, called, wait for it, grey stuff.

Has slightly different properties that make it better for certain things. Generally cures faster and holds more sharply than green stuff. Both are worth owning

Sculpture should not make your dick this hard

If you are going to mainly work in greenstuff, good steel sculpting tools are way, way, way more useful than clay or paint shapers. Silicone tipped tools are more useful for sculpting fimo or sculpey.

fucking italians, man.

Most likely it is Sculpey firm/pro, which is usually grey.

Sculpey is, like fimo, a polymer clay and not an epoxy product. It hardens from temperature, not from chemical reaction, and it is available in big blocks.

People sculpting things larger than miniatures are way more likely to use fimo/sculpey or oil based modeling clays like chavant or 3d software than to use greenstuff, and a lot of people sculpt miniatures with them as well.

The excellent Confrontation miniature line was mainly sculpted in Fimo, and so are a lot of boardgame minis, like the Blood Rage, Massive Darkness and Zombicide Black Plague ones.

Fimo/sculpey is a lot more like sculpting with normal clay, and chavant clay feels even more like clay, and not like sculpting with slowly hardening chewing gum like epoxy clays do. Greenstuff is great, but it only makes sense for sculpting pretty small things.

I've seen this sculpture dame near half the boards I have visited today.
