Anybody ever developed/homebrewed their own traits?

While the game is pretty comprehensive, I also feel like that might be one of the easiest things to expand but I've never really thought about it myself.

Kinda wanna play this game as it seems to be one of the better Sci Fi games, but I'm turned off by the really /out there/ concepts like monkey, octopus, and ravens morphs along with the brain uploading shit.

Then play anther sci-fi game. I'm all about uploading and weird shit in my sci-fi and I (and most people here) will tell you EP isn't THAT great. The system is meh, the setting is full of skub and missed opportunities. It might be the best RPG about transhuman stuff on the market but that's not saying much.

Maybe if you tell us what you would like to see in your sci-fi setting/system we could suggest a game that's better suited for you.

What kind of systems do you prefer? If you like light narrativish systems Battelstar Galactica and Firefly have books dedicated specifically to them. I've heard good things about the BG RPG.

If you're down with FATE (and you should be if you not into crunchy system) you might like Diaspora. It's a hard sci-fi Traveler clone, which, if you're not familiar, is basically Firefly minus wild west aesthetics. It's a good game.

Considering you played some pretty heavy systems don't knock GURPS. The core book (or even the free 20 page GURPS-lite pamphlet) and the Ultratech book would be more that enough to run just about any sci-fi game you want.

The problem is that we want an established universe, something that GURPS and Diaspora doesn't support. We'd prefer it to be an 'original' setting, for lack of a better term. It's a lot to ask for, I completely understand that.

GURPS Transhuman Space has already been mention. It's a vision of less advanced transhumanism than EP.

There are several editions of Traveler which do have setting books.

Serenity (Firefly RPG) and Battlestar Galactica RPG are right up your alley.

You should play something else. Uploaded minds are the single most important and far-reaching plot element in the entire setting. Without them there's no reason for any of the rest to exist.
