Think this will be any good, or probably Johnny Mnemonic movie-tier?
>>
>>51542855
Anon, Johnny Mnemonic was good.

This movie is going to suck though, I'm betting it'll be just another action movie without any of the philosophy or background that makes the setting distinct.
>>

I don't know, I mean, it's popular enough that I'd have thought they'd try really hard to get it right, but whether they will or not

The short story was good; the movie was awful. Well, maybe "awful-good" in a hilarious B-movie kind of way.

Question /tg/
Given the chance, would you replace limps with bionics and prosthetics? Would you get an arm that had its very own wi fi hotspot? Or a display monitor in the palm? Or a retractable vibro-blade?
What if your insurance covered it? And the constant, constant maintenance you'd need?

Like Aeon Flux?
>>

>Would I replace a perfectly working arm that maintains itself and doesn't run any real risk of rejection or malfunction with a machine and all the problems that this entails?

Fuck no. My fucking phone works as a wifi hotspot and palm display monitor and doesn't come with any of the problems or upkeep. And what the fuck do I need a retractable vibro-blade for? If I need a knife, I just carry a fucking knife. It's not like it takes up much space.
Even if the arm has super strength it's still not worth shit, because my spine and legs can't carry a fucking car anyway.
>>
>>51542922
>philosophy or background that makes the setting distinct.

Honestly. I always felt like GitS kinda beats it's audience over the head with it's philosophy in a really overt way. Like, in a way that's so overt it makes the philosophy worse for it even when it should be good.
>>
>>51545015
I'd get robo-legs.

Also cyber eyes because mine are fucking shit.
>>
>>51546152
That's because Mamoru Oshii is incapable of not beating you over the head with whatever philosophy he's decided needs to be in his latest thing. The manga, anime series, and video game are less obnoxious.
>>
>>51539594
What is she? Some sort of mutant? Literally anatomy 101
>>
>>51545015
There's a lotta GitS talk going around (as there should be in a cyber punk thread) but in one of the series they have a plot where former military members with lots of prosthetics kidnap someone important because their VA benefits don't cover the cost of constant maintenance

It's actually kind of weird. I had a movie night with some buddies a little while back where we watched Akira and GitS back to back, and the contrasts were kind of huge. Akira is arguably the "smarter" movie, in that it doesn't really beat you over the head with the philosophy but also doesn't really say anything. GitS has a clear message, but it also thinks you're too stupid to get it without the movie spelling it out.

>>51546380
And don't forget that the Major and Batou both mention that they are essentially owned by Section 9 and can never retire because most of their body is only being loaned.
>>
>>51540108
Willing I give this movie a shot/10

So far it looks like they are trying to capture the feel of things, and I really don't mind the casting choices.
>>
>>51546468
>the Major and Batou both mention that they are essentially owned by Section 9 and can never retire because most of their body is only being loaned.
Reminds me of that option in CP2020 where you could basically sell yourself to a corp to get more cyberware.
>>
>>
>>51545015

I would definetly get cyber eyes for sure and unless I actually lost my arms and legs I'd settle for whatever augmentations can be put into them such as some kind of skin link or the equivalent and possibly retractable tools of some sort.

As I age I would replace my organs with prostehtics ones as well.

Seriously, if the cost of the replacements are covered why not get new eyes. You could pay to see several extra spectrums, access the net whenever you want without anyone knowing, also you could magnify whatever you're looking at
Actual question though, what the hell is supposed to power cyber punk augmentations? Do you just have fucking batteries hanging from you all the time?

Most functions would be handled by means of a biological battery that takes in energy from your body which will account for you having to eat more or have special snacks with high calorie counts.

Any functions beyond that are done by an extra power source built into the augmentation that recharges via the bio battery.

I've seen some try and say they run on bioelectricity, like in Deus Ex. Others go with saying that they managed to miniaturization batteries enough to fit them in the augs themselves.

I don't know if this would work but what if you created special muscles like those of an eel and implant those in the person's body along with the augmentations?

>Others go with saying that they managed to miniaturization batteries enough to fit them in the augs themselves.
I like the way SLA Industries did it: Cybernetics had batteries in them when they were introduced 15 years before the game is set. They fell out of style, and so by the time the game is set, there is an area of the slums full of people who had cybernetics that have now run out of battery.

hey /cpg/,
I'm working on my homebrew with heavy tactical elements. high focus on positioning and teamwork during a firefight.
I'm looking for a way to implement hacking into the system, but not sure how to do it.

I kinda like how Infinity does it, but hackable troops aren't that prevalent in my system. powered armor is both rare and pretty hard to hack, since they have their own, very powerful ICE protecting them.

I'm looking for something more like in hacking in Invisible Inc, and Netrunner, but I aim to have hacking be part of the combat engagement, so other players won't have to fiddle their thumbs while the hacker PC dives into a cyber dungeon.

how would you like hacking in an RPG with tactical combat as its main focus? give me ideas!

I think the justification for it is pretty cute. The human mind just can't handle having more than four limbs, but at the same time you can't safely anchor huge cyberlimbs to the stump of someones arm, so you have to cut off their arm but wear the new one.

Same, I got shitty hips already and looking at my grandparents it's not likely to get better. Maybe not full robo legs though and more just hips and less intrusive support enhancements for the legs to go along with the whole system.
Cyber eyes sound great, I'm pretty near-sighted, especially if they're better than normal eyes in some way like seeing more or having a tech interface but looking at the current tech it might be a lot further off than limbs.

Finished watching Death Powder - it's awful. Watched Gunhed yesterday, it's a tad better. Still have to go through Burst City, but the perspective of watching a shitty Japanese movie without subtitles doesn't motivate me, so I started Nemesis - it's bad but at least the story makes some sense. Johnny Mnemonic was crap, but at least the story was intelligible. Ghost in the Shell will most likely be the same.
