do a base coat with a light metallic paint, depending on how bright you want it to look. I used a fairly light tamiya aluminium spray. After that i did two/three layers with a mix of 90% blue and 10% green (tamiya also). Those paints are shiny themselves so i dont know how to achieve it with citadel paints. Maybe gloss varnish?
Also use an airbrus, it really makes it so much better

Fuck up a few like I did.

I shoulda primed my guys alllll the way white.

Also, I pulled them off the sprues and cleaned them with an xacto knife. Worked well.

Read the assembly instructions. Don't just try to strip the sprue all at once or you'll get all the bits confused.

Clarification: I am going for a white scars chapter. Hence white.

>>
>>51531305
Its guard, you have lots of men to practice on.

Putting them together is easy, start with some standard ones, then get a little creative proxying or adding things.

I'd leave the Chimera until after you finished all the infantry.
>>
>>51531340
Is white primer the way to go for Cadian-style guardsmen? Also, will the primer at something like a Home Depot work or is that asking for trouble?

>>
>>51531375
I feel like mini specific primer would be better, but is it worth the cost? No idea.

Better heads around here would know.
>>
>>51531375
white primer is good if you want your skin tones and clothes to be lighter, and it makes it easier to get stuff like highlighting done if you're doing thin coats. the downsides are if you have any nooks or crannies you cant get a brush into (for guardsmen, between the rifle and chest) it'll be difficult to cover up the white.

for black primer, you have to do more layers for the lighter colours like skin and cloth, but any spots in corners you miss will just look like shadow anyway.

mini primer is ideal, but stuff like rustoleum automotive primer is fine too.

The most important part of a brush is the tip. As long as you have a good tip you want to use as large a brush as you can. Smaller brushes have their place, but generally using them just means more time cleaning and resupplying the brush and less time painting.
>>
>>51531300
>>51531921

Thank you, both. Job's not done yet, though. I hope I can do such a neat concept justice, especially with paint.
>>
What white primer do you use?
>>
>>51531643
With a kolinsky sable

000 are shit. A sable 0, 1, or 2 will have the same tip as a sable 000 and more hairs to hold paint

Non sable 000 is just a few strands of shitty bristles
>>
>>51532345
I don't. If I want something other than black primer I either use grey primer or prime back and then airbrush white paint on the areas I want brighter.
>>
>>51532345
if thats an open question, army painter white, which is a primer+base. since it tends to be a bit cloggy sometimes, i mostly just use it for single models i want to paint as display pieces. i'm going to be swapping to light grey primer as a general priming colour.

Could anyone give me their feed back on WH: age of sigmar? I use to play 40k and fantasy a lot, but sold out to focus on MTG. AOS minis are awesome, but I'd like some opinions on the game rules. Any opinions to offer?
>>
>>51532515

You should head to the AoS general for that. This is a painting thread.
>>
>>51532474
It's an open question, yeah. I've seen a lot of wash-based painting and kind of like the way it looks, but I've already had white primer fry one box of models.
>>
>>51532499
looks amazing buddy, especially the blood drop on the hammer.

did you forget to paint the bolter casings brass, though?

>>51532515
i came from a year of 40k playing to sigmar, and the simplicity of it was a breath of fresh air. once you learn the basic 4 pages of rules, all the stats and rules you need are on your units sheets. theres no looking up tables of shooting algorythyms and special rules pointing you to several other special rules pointing to a supplement to determine who can do what. it's just

'hits on a 3+, wounds on a 4+, with 1 rending." and if anything affects that, it'll be on the sheet of one of the units involved in the battle.
>>
>>51532546
this was painted entirely with washes over white primer
>>
>>51532515
I don't like it personally, but if you want something simple that doesn't require thinking then it may be for you.
>>
>>51532560
Thanks. And no, the Bolter is done, but now I just realize what that area is so yes, I will go back and through some Balthsar and Agrax on there. Thanks for spotting that.
>>
>>51532546
also these lil' fellas, washes over white primer for the skin tone, instead of a dark base layer and layering up to a white
>>
>>51532515
40k = vintage
AoS = standard draft
>>
>>51531375
>will the primer at something like a Home Depot work or is that asking for trouble?
I use rustoleum light grey auto primer from home depot.

It's really good and makes painting lighter colors a breeze. Just make sure you shake it for the full two minutes it recommends.

>>
What's a good highlight to Temple guard blue? that isn't too contrasting?
>>
When priming does the model need to be 100% covered black or can it be ever so slightly speckled with tiny bits of plastic showing through? I dont want fuck up the details by doing and more coats
>>
>>51532862
Any modern comparison?
>>
>>51533416
you should be able to have no plastic showing through without being too heavy on primer if you do it correctly, it takes practise.
i had a tank i didnt prime correctly and after i finished it, a bit of paint about 4mm across just flaked off my gun barrel to bare plastic
>>

>>

That way you'll also have a surplus of orc gore for bases
>>

>>
>>51534108
>>51534119

Concept itself is neat but my main issue is with the posing of the model. His lower half says running but his upper half says standing. It's giving this weird "trotting" look, almost as if he were a show pony. Try to make it more dynamic. The armor looks fine though the highlights could stand to have some more contrast. I would recommend trying to make them Wolfen legs look more scally.

Gonna be blunt anon, them models look like shit. Keep them though, as a reminder. If you are serious about painting minis and giting gud then 6 months to a year you will look back on those three and see tons of improvement.

Now for some actual critiques.

>Gets some more brushes. Smaller doesn't mean better, what you want is a sharp tip, though you need a verity for different tasks. For example for my actual painting a detail brushes I keep stored in a safe spot to reduce ware and damage. For my other brushes for dry coating or applying PVA glue, I just toss in a cup.

>THIN YA PAINTS. Refer to Duncan

>FINE TIP ON YOUR BRUSH. Refer to Duncan.

>Your eyes are a mess. Even the best painters have a hard time getting those eyes clean and perfect, it's fine. But you should have gone back and put some paint back on the helmet to clean up the mess you made.

I could go all day saying this stuff but I'll just let Duncan do the rest.

Watch his videos, learn, love, paint.

Starting to get into guild Ball. Was working on my captain today. I think he's coming out ok. Going to hit most of his clothes with a wash of seraphim sepia and agrax earthshade for the wood. Probably going to do reikland fleshshade over the skin and then highlight with Cadian fleshtone. Probably will wait until tomorrow after work though
>>
>>51534430
Yeah, I think you're right. He's the most static out of the first five I've modeled so far, and the only one holding a gun (and he's got the tacticool eyepiece).

I kind of envisioned him like one of those lizards running across water with its chest held still, but matching motion looks better.
>>
>>51534402
Leadbelcher + nuln oil would've looked better than using dog legs as goddamn lizard legs.
>>
>>51534587
First off I recommend up loading all your pics to your PC first or use an app on your phone so you can crop and resize your image appropriately before posting. Large enough so we can get the important details, though small enough so it's not taking up a huge chunk of the screen. 1.65mb is too much for what you just posted.

Model looks good though, paint could stand to be thinner but that maybe just the model itself. I am really digging the yellow though.
>>
>>51534635
In my opinion I would just tilt his torso forward and turn it counter clockwise (looking the same direction he is) just a tad while sticking the head to face forward and up so he looks like he is sprinting. It's neat what you pictured but does not translate well at all to minis.

Just remember, Dynamic is better.
>>
>>51534647
Fair point. It's been a long day and I just wanted to post something without fighting with the laptop. Glad the yellow looks good. I usually hate using it because it feels like it takes 20 coats to get it to look right

Alright then, fair's fair anon.

Still, you're acting like a shitbucket for no real reason. They're not even supposed to be lizard legs, they're just mutated mofos.

Somehow I also get the feeling it's been just you that's followed my posts around to try and bait. Posting style is similar. I won't reply anymore.

Thanks, just watched a video on them and they just might be what I need. Might also be an improvement on the blood drop gems for my BA army.

2ish layer Tamiya Clear Red (X-27)

The color is bit richer in real life so if you want bit more faded look like the picture you might consider less shiny gold or a mat color base before you add the clear red.

>>51534759
This /wip/ anon. Although the anon you are talking to does have a point about using wolfen legs (could have been improved with some sanding and green stuff to make some scale). But if you don't like what he says and don't think he is giving helpful criticism, don't respond. There are always gonna be people on here who shit post, try to start a flame war, or are just rudely blunt. It's better off to just ignore them than decrease the quality of a thread by making so much of it about a hurt feelings match.
>>
>>51534759
No, this is my first reply against you. You've asked 2 HHG and the unanimous consensus was that the conversion was bad by multiple people there. You still stuck with it with no change, yet here you are, expecting a different result.

Multiple people thought your stuff is bad, it is really bad if you are using that as black dragon prototype. Hell, it's ridiculous for spess wulfs as is.
>>
>>51534770
Will save that info for my next paint run, thanks. Was also gonna try my hand at GW's artificer set but this might just be what I am looking for. Idea is my more Elite BA units (Termies, CS, Sergeants, etc) would have this type of armor.

Hey wipg, what's your opinion on Infinity models as a base for conversion to 40k characters? I'm looking at using Gabriele de Fersen as a base for my Inquisitor, with a rifle and head replacement as the main major work. My Inquisition detachment is all third-party besides the Chimera, so I'm not super concerned about it clashing aesthetically, but on the other hand it's truescale *and* metal...
>>
>>51534939
The scale is really odd though. You will need to slap more shit on him
>>
>>51534953
Fair enough, though the slimmer look works, it's for a non stripperiffic female Inquisitor. Any suggestions, besides the obvious few of "purity seals and books"?
>>
>>51534731
Actually looking more into those technical paints I want to get peoples opinions on them. I actually struggle quit a bit with Blood Angel blood drop gems as I always fine the transition from black to Wild Rider Red to not transition so well. Would something like multiple layers Spirit Stone Red be better or am I doing it wrong?

Here is how I normally do it.
>Paint the whole gem black.
>Do a layer of Khorne Red, leaving either the upper left or right of the gem black.
>Wash over with Nuln
>More Khorne, though leaving some of the washed over layer to remain on the upper side.
>Then some Evil Sun Scarlet towards the bottom.
>Then a thin strip of Wild Rider
>Then a thiner laryer of watered down white with a white dot on the upper most black.
>Layer of 'Ardcoat

I know that's the most typical way of doing it but I feel as if there is a better way to make these gems pop out more.
>>
>>51535017

Well for the technical paint, its meant to be layered over that super runefang steel replacement that comes with the pack (I forget the name atm). Metallic and shiny effects need to be layered on top of metallic paints.
>>
>>51535017
think of the spiritstone technical paints (and i had this told to me by a redshirt) as literally the colour-appropriate glaze mixed with 'ardcoat

if you have bloodletter glaze and 'ardcoat you can make spiritstone red
>>
>>51535071
I figured as much, either a silver or gold metallic paint.

>>51535101
That's some food for thought. I'm still somewhat new to painting and am still learning new tricks and steps on doing cool things with painting. I'm just looking into if these technical paints are a good alternative to what I have been doing or if I am just better off trying to perfect the more traditional method I am doing now. Having said that I think I'll just try thin my layers down a lot more then maybe do a coat of Carroburg Crimson next time and see if that makes an improvement.
>>
>>51534759
At this point you've earned the ire of several threads, not just one dude. Initially HHG was annoyed because you forced your fave chapter into a setting in which they had no business being, but your complete refusal to even listen to their complaints won you their hatred. Whilst the conversions themselves aren't terrible, you're winning no friends by ignoring advice and jumping threads: believe it or not but there is a user spillover between every warhammer general.

Cover all the round holes he has on his nipples and neck.

Imperium uses solid plating for most of their gears then filigree the plate.

You think at this point GW would just make an upgrade kit to make a few guardsmen female. Or better yet, release a squad just to mix up with your regular squad. But then again, this is just me assuming their is "some" demand for it. I might just be part of a minority that think it's cool.

Need better lighting to be able to judge better. But so far I am not a huge fan of the grey, unless you do some white highlights with it.

As for x-mas marines, I say embrace it. It's a cool look. Also a green axe would look cool. though would also lean towards a blue, or violet colour.

Bought a few minis from Raging Heroes, Kurganovas and Iron Empire are pretty good, and they have some fine models for Female Commisars. Porportions are exaggerated, but fuck every male in 40k is biff mclargehuge anyways.
>>
>>51535411
If anything I think it's an issue of interchangeability with the existing kits. We all know how terribly proportioned the troops sculpts for Cadians and Catachans are, so females done in the same scale would probably look horrid while also being a lot more restrictive in the usage of bits. The command squad boxes are actually a bit better looking than the troops kits but are designed to be modular with them bitz-wise in order to drive sales. Special weapons probably have a lot higher demand than female soldiers after all.
>>
>>51535562
True enough, I would defiantly want a special weapon kits for the different factions than a fem soldier kit.

If your white balance is so fucked to hell that the auto functions can't make sense of it, you can try Levels... (just to the right of the auto functions in the previous pic).

Click on the black/grey/white dropper here, and then click on something black/grey/white in your pic. Click around until shit looks decent.

Truth to be told though, if this is necessary, then your photo is most likely shit to being with. Take a new one, with a good amount of white or neutral grey in the frame, and don't mix lighting of different hues/color/temeprature.

glowing looks fine, but remember rust gets scraped off by contact, so on your treads the rust would be in the recessed, the edges would be scraped to a bright silver.
also if you're putting rust on the paint, maybe stipple some of the metal through to make it look like it's flaking off, since metal rusts, but paint wouldnt.

dont sweat my criticism though, i mean rust is something people spend years improving on, look at scale modellers

>The intense painting schedule really took the quality of these videos...
to be fair the finished result uses only novice techniques and still comes up with a final result that blows most paintjobs done by the average gamer out of the water.

Part of the problem is how schizophrenic GW is.
They say they're not a gaming company yet they clearly use the rules to market the miniatures and the relative powerlevels/number of models needed determines their pricing structure.
The produce impossible to transport and handle display miniatures as center pieces for armies.
Their business model with cheap starters and even the AoS rules targets casual gamers, yet the models are littered in ever more intricate details that are impossible to paint for a beginner.

Considering, that Duncan also carters to beginners mostly and has to lobby using stuff like the effect paints for painting gems instead of painting the reflection by hand.

Use a palette, get some paint on your brush, mix it on a palette (shiny cardboard, a piece of plastic, a ceramic plate)

Put your paint on this palette, then dip your brush into the water, and move the water from the pot on to the pallet.

Try to avoid slopping paint from the pot onto your model.

Add it to the palette first, add water, mix it all together, aim for a consistency a little thicker than milk, then apply to your model. it'll be patchy, but that's ok, wait for it to dry and do it again.

I'm no ps pro, but as a poster of >>51536580
, this took me about 3 minutes.

Place photo in ps, Ctrl A, go to image and select Adjustments. Now you can brighten your photo, and fix contrast if you have a original shitty photo with bad light.
After this just frame the model with the rectangular marquee tool and press Ctrl I, press delete and then go to Image but this time pick "trim". Now that bloated picture of a entire work desk is just your model.
Have you already followed these steps >>51536670 you should be left with only a model and a somewhat shaded backdrop, and this is good enough for just about any photo. But if you want a entire white background, just pick the magic wand tool, select the backdrop and start deleting it. Takes some work, but will eventually remove everything but the model.

This is unfortunately the extent of my knowledge of ps. I used to know how to place in a different backdrop (gothic cityscape for instance), but I forgot it by now.
>>
>>51537252

Thats supposed to be Shift+Ctrl+I, heh, as I said I'm no expert at this so my bad.

Also, when you're done, press Ctrl+Alt+I to change image size, so it wont take for ever to upload and show on /tg/
>>
>>51536999
Here's mine for comparison anon. I'm no pro but keeping the red thin and layering over a wash helps a lot. They are really simple models so it helps to get strong colour across the plates and use the wash to shade and make the details pop.
>>
>>51536652
You don't even need Photoshop. Faststone Image Viewer is actually more than enough for this!
You can crop, resize, save under numerous formats and their variants (PNG with varied compression options, for example; much better than the default PNG implementation of Paint, for example), do basic photo manips (curves, levels, light, colours...), even adding texts and drawings on top.
It's all there, free, won't eat your RAM, and without complicated interface or anything.

rehighlight with the same skin color. use thin lines in the same direction to emulate muscles and remove all of that flat wash sitting everywhere. On the eye, apply another coat of that yellow and the go google a picture of a goats eye. Take black and practice a bit of free hand on the eye to make the creepy looking iris, then add a little extra red to the furthers edge of the eye to really set it out: right next to the skin. Brighten up the horns with the basecoat again and then take white into the brown and put down layers further up the horn, adding more white as you go. Let each layer dry otherwise you will make a mess tho.

Oh and finish up that axe and base.

Looking good so far. good enough for tabletop if you just threw the base on it and got the axe done, but has so much more potential.

It's somewhat intentional, the thought behind it is that spawn would be oozing a oily substance and that the horns and other bony protrusions are covered in filth and grease. IRL they are somewhat more distinct from the flesh colour allthough it could be improved. How would I go about doing that

It's a really simple recipe:
1. base with leabelcher
2.wash with agrax earthshade (or nuln oil if you're looking for a more shine/new armour)
3. apply leadbelcher again, but leave some of the wash (I just water down the leadbelcher)
4. highlight with a watered down bright metal paint (I use Army Painter Shinning Silver) mixed with leadbelcher 50/50
5. edge highlight with just the bright silver

Pic related is the more "clean" version with nuln oil insted of agrax

Working on a small warband for Hinterlands, I need some help when it comes to his legs.

They're made from the top part of Kabalite Warrior legs and the lower part of the legs that come with the Vampire Lord on Zombie Dragon, but the difference in size was very noticeable.
I've used some greenstuff to bulk them up but it's very messy, and I was wondering if using some milliput might be a good idea. I've heard you can smooth milliput using water, but I've never used it before. Can anyone tell me if using milliput is a good idea if I'm trying to sculpt armour plated legs, or should I scrap it and try something else?
>>
>>51540247
I think it could work.

Though personally, I would've chosen another pair of legs, or atleast changed the pose a bit.

>>
>>51540247
The effect you want is achievable with either putty.
Have you been using vaseline on your crafting tools?
What tools are you using?

You may be better off trying to sculpt him a chain skirt: decent enough chain only really requires you to make a lot of pinpricks. Add some tassets to that, which you may be able to scavenge from some other armour pieces, and he should look OK.

Goes to show how large they make the riders for the monstrous mounts, he's probably roughly sigmarine sized and he's not a new model.

>>51540354
I don't use vaseline, just water, I have lots of different sculpting tools as well a set of rubber tipped clay shapers. /diy/, I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Is it my paints? My brushes? The fact I use alcohol to dilute my paints? The models themselves? Or am I just terminally retarded? So, will Lorgar finally come back now that the smurfs are getting their Primarch? you can get away with like, 70/30 paint to water, it depends on what you're trying to achieve. i usually get a little dollop of paint on my brush, wipe it on my palette, then dip my brush in my water and then put that on my pallet for a drop or two of water. as long as you can apply the paint without it literally running off your model and pooling.
use a higher amount of paint to water for doing detail work so you have more control.

also if you're painting over primer, i've found some primers are semi-water resistant so it could even be that
