Does that say 'ovenkoven'? Also, there are more German words than kreig, blitz, etc.

Yes it does say ovenkoven. I put the german words there because they sound cool, or does it break the consistency?

How do I make a map in digital media?

I suck at computers.
>>
>>51525413
It looks a little weird. I'm not sure why a forest would be named 'Iron Valley'. I've also never heard of an Esker, but there's apparently a place called 'Esker Murder', so it's probably not something good.

Ovenkoven looks like gobbledygook.

More or less this. World is laid out as if there are plate tectonics but the world was made by the gods (or so the stories go) and it's nature is sustained through magic. The very ebb and flow of magic acts like new prevailing winds and shape many (if not most) of it's weather patterns.

Big paintNET map guy here

Layers and transparency are your best friends. I keep layers for water, water tint (made with gradients), land, and text. If you want a map that can be edited very easily with consistent blending, you're going to want to turn antialiasing off for brushes, buckets, and selection clipping. During selection I also recommend changing bilinear filtering to "nearest neighbor" filtering, which will prevent your selection from blurring when you resize or rotate it. With these settings, you will only get a single solid color with no blending or little transparent bits.

With antialiasing, however, the map will look much smoother and you won't have to spend hours doing manual blending. The issue is that if you want to do an expansion in the middle of something (increasing the amount of land between region A and B rather than just adding region C as an island or expanded coast) it will get really screwed up.

There's also something that you might not encounter, but I did, and it took tens of hours to adjust. If at some point you decide the map is too small (as in, the dimensions of the image file itself) and you make the whole thing 200% bigger or whatever, your coastlines will become super blocky as every old pixel will become multiple pixels, so it will not be consistent with any new coastlines you add. I ended up redoing almost the entire coastline of my map twice as I doubled its size twice.

>>
>>51540182
Thanks for the advice. I've already figured out the anitaliasing stuff and I'm in process of switching to two layers - one for geography and one for place names. I've download a couple bitmap fonts from dafont that look great.

One thing I'm having trouble with is the clone stamp tool. It seems like it would be useful for repeating geographic features like hills or cities, but I can't figure out how it works.

Kicking around a semirandom map for our homebrew setting. Not!France is supposed to be the big empire that the players are trying to save, while the neighboring kingdoms bicker and wage political war.

Been working on a sci-fi setting for couple months now. Some of the system names are more or less placeholder but other than that I'm pretty much done with mapping for now. Next I'll start sketching out the different states, cultures, alien races (which are in the minority since most of the galaxy is inhabited by humans) and political relations or whatnot. The zoomed out part is where the players will be starting off.

My boys will be exploring the western unmaped continent in order to prove that the world is spherical and, while they're at it, colonize some land and reach the city in the west that is now blocked by their enemies of the east. mfw I just bought this notebook and started this map about 20 minutes ago and came to tg to start this thread, :]
I need names for the area marked sister cities. they are 4 countries that came together to build the giant wall (also needs a name) there was a fifth but when nomadic tribes broke trough they abandoned the fifth country and walled themselves again instead of fighting the horde. southwest of the pic. help?

Urals were formed by tectonic plates. They are just old as fuck and dead for long time. Alps and Himalayas are young and live, they still grow. Wait for few millions years and you will have Ural-like mountains in place of Alps (and Carpathians and Pyrenees) and Tibet like highliand in Himalayas.

Ok I was using GIMP with some crappy stamps for buildings and trees and stuff and was very drunk lol. Anyway this is my attempt at about 20 minutes in Inkarnate, the large city from the last pic is the big city split in half by the river in this pic, a sort of Constantinople type of city. This is a bit wider though not the whole world.

What I'm really looking for right now to make sure I can make realistic continents and biomes and landforms. I can get more stylish later.

I'm not an expert on plate tectonics, but I would imagine there would be mountains going down those long peninsulas. The islands in the archipelago in the bottom left corner look they fit a little too neatly together. Maybe you should also add some foothills or make the mountains smaller, depending on the scale you're going for.

Sadly apparently Inkarnate doesn't allow for smaller mountains, which is also the reason mountains stop at the peninsulas.

Added settlements in those places I judged that would be the principal cities. It's not a super-populated continent, although of course there's smaller population groups not represented.

I also made a parallel map with the different regions or cultural areas. Most of the place is iron age technology at the very best, so there's not much contact or knowledge between those areas that don't overlap. Ignore the names, most (but not all) will be changed.

The country to the right either needs to be lighter in color or its text needs to be lighter, because it's unreadable.

Otherwise it's pretty good, though depending on how feudal your setting is you might want more fragmented borders (see the Holy Roman Empire and Hanseatic league). Also, you better have at least a basic physical map to go with it.

You might want to show capitals/major cities on this map, and even throw in a regional map or two.
>>
What's the deal about Inkarnate being "no-skill"? I've hand-drawn maps in the past and I'm thinking about giving Inkarnate a try simply because its faster and makes your map digital right away.
>>
>>51618692
It's easier than literally any other option.
>>
>>51618692
It is built for the lowest skilled mappers with the least extensive maps. On a very small scale with low effort, inkarnate is a great program, but once you move past that it loses its value and limits the creator. Other software becomes better at that point.

Inkarnate is also very limited in style and content, not much imagination can be put into the color schemes and symbols etc.

Unlike Campaign Cartographer or Hexographer, Inkarnate doesn't require massive manuals or hours of practice to make good looking maps. While you are locked into the one art style that's provided, it doesn't matter if you're making maps for yourself or your friends and don't want to spend more than a few hours working on it.

TFW trying to make names for towns in Not-France that don't sound stupid to a French person.
>>
>>51623027
My map is here >>51617555
Borleans is the Not!France, it also draws influence from northern Italy but is obviously France-esque.
I like to think the name itself isn't that stupid. Orleans is a major city in France, and I accidentally ended up spelling it with a B once in an essay and though to myself 'that's not bad'
I speak French (I live in Ontario), and that's actually a curse for coming up with fictional french sounding place names. I always just try to use words to describe what the place is, similar to English towns like Kingston, Kettleton etc.. Examples of this I've used which turned out all right are:
>Montblanc (white mountain)
>Trois Rivieres (three rivers, this is an actual place in Quebec though)

You can also use one word, in conjunction with some French sounding mumbo jumbo. I find this usually works well.
>Rottoneau (eau means water)
>Lanceau (eau again)
>Maisoi (supposed to be a degradation of 'maison du roi' which means house of the king)

You can also just use French sounding nonsense
>Lysoi
>Orbreaut
>Dumont (technically means 'from the mountain' but whatever)

Finally, there's a good generator for this stuff. You can put in any country and it will list off some tint little neighbourhoods or villages in that country. By putting in France I got
>Germonville
>Dalot
>Gouex
>Ramatuelle
>Couvains

Thank you! That name generator is exactly what I needed. I found two other "French" place-name generators, but neither of them seemed very good compared to yours. Plus, I know it's decent if it's recommended by a Francophone.

Here's a map of what I've got so far. Some of the names are shamelessly stolen from Clark Ashton Smith and Robert E. Howard, some are shamelessly stolen from old Medieval romances and some I just made up myself. I'm definitely going to add some more soon using the advice you gave me.

>>51617555
Since it's a political map, I'd add important provinces, cities and maybe even notable ruins, castles, roads, ect. For areas that are too small for their name, I'd consider assigning them a number and put a key of those regions to the side. That way, the map will be less cluttered. For example:

1. Auffershallow
2. Mesogor
3. Verillia
4. Duntar Valley Alliance

and so on.

Really basic to start. I want to add an impact crater to the northern edge of the largest continent. Thoughts? Do any of the islands bear too close a resemblance to real world ones?
>>
>>51628786
Australia is pretty blatant, but how much of a resemblance is too close? Shit's subjective, anon.

Is anyone else incredibly self-conscious about names?

I'm more than happy to draw shit and show it to people, but I get apprehensive as soon as they ask what something is called.
>>
>>51627320
Oh no, I thought you were trolling but the province names aren't horrible.
>les
>Mait
>fous
>Quois
This is probably bait but your cities are literally "the" "but" "crazy" and "what"
>>
>>51629167

Yeah, god help me. I try to use names that are similar to whatever real-life culture I'm taking influence from, but I'm always nervous about naming things, certain it's going to sound horrible in another language. I try to google everything I come up with to make sure it doesn't have any obvious/bad meaning in another language.
>>
>>51629232
Les is the only one that's spelled that way, and place names that sound and almost look like normal words is actually surprisingly common.

I'd say Lez (unless it's meant to be an I)
>>
>>51629167
Then think back to the place's history, how that could relate to the name it was given, and how the language would morph it as time went by

Shit, ever heard of "Zaragoza"? It used to be "Caesar Augusta"; get some city named to some king, emperor or hero and then roll the name around until it barely resembles what it used to mean.

Something else that's pretty fun too: Invasions.
Got a river called Ana? Cool, now have some foreign force conquer the area, and "guadi" is "river" to them, so "river Ana" becomes "guadi Ana".
Now have the area be conquered, or even reconcquered, cneturies later. To the new coonquerors, Ana will be known as "river Guadiana".
Bam, there go most southern rivers in Spain.

Do the same by mixing, dunno, ethiopian, german and japanese, then say it over and over in english until the resulting "monster-of-a-word" becomes a way more manageable "monstawah" you could use day to day.

Some other stuff you can do: The actual name is lost to time, but multiple theories exist: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hispania#Etymology
Personally, I love "Rabbit Island", although "City of the Sun" sounds quite exotic

Or, even funnier, the invaders misunderstood the locals, and named a place "I don't understand you" because they kept saying that: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yucat%C3%A1n#Origin_of_.22Yucat.C3.A1n.22

I guess this fits in this thread although it's nowhere as impressive looking as everything posted here.
It's my take on what a linguistic map of Tamriel from the Elder Scrolls series would look like. I know TES isn't originally /tg/ but I've posted this in the TES threads that show up here and it's really just a little project of mine, combining two of my interests, map making and Elder Scrolls. It's nowhere near completion and it's obviously missing the legend. Black borders represent languages, dark gray are dialect groups and light gray are individual dialects; most of the latter are missing right now.
If anyone has any pointers or questions, go ahead.

Gonna be running a hexcrawler and, I'm not sure, but the rivers look weird to me. Each hex is supposed to be 5 miles, btw.
>>
>>51630422
The rivers are far too straight (and probably too wide, but clarity in mapmaking is ok too), but you can simply state that it's a matter of the IC cartographer not being precise enough.
>>
>>51630527
Mostly this
You could get away with straight rivers if it were way more mountainous, but as you get away from the mountains and the hills rivers tend to get wawy

Various mathematical formulae relate the variables of the meander geometry. As it turns out some numerical parameters can be established, which appear in the formulae. The waveform depends ultimately on the characteristics of the flow but the parameters are independent of it and apparently are caused by geologic factors. In general the meander length is 10-14 times, with an average 11 times, the fullbank channel width and 3 to 5 times, with an average of 4.7 times, the radius of curvature at the apex. This radius is 2-3 times the channel width.

I named the towns after trees and tried to give each a theme based on aspects of the tree and the seven deadly sins, for instance pine is mostly used commercially so I made that one the town of greed. Oak town is just a big generic town though. There's also vikings at the bottom because fuck yeah, vikings.

Hobart is a small farming village with an important role in my campaign!
Because of it's close proximity to Whyrgrad it's the location of many refugees from the now destroyed Corull looking to seek shelter as Whyrgrad has closed it's gates to immigrants.

The places on the map that i posted are merely the places where my adventurers have visited or heard of so far, not the entirety of the world. (which i have planned but have not put to a map depending on where the PCs go)

Thanks, I wanted to make the pre-diluvian lands the size of continents, but I think I have to re-draw it.
>>
>>51633245
Wind can blow from north, yes, but it due the terrain (look up map of Greece, look at mountains an tell me how there could not be Boreas) or local atmospheric pressure. But general wind direction, in continent scale, is due the coriolis effect.
Or maybe you want it to be magic then fuck this shit and do what you wish.
>>51633209
I've heard it once and look rest on wikipedia lol
But I know some shit. Rivers in large scale tend to be more or less in the same place but in minor scale they bend as fuck if they are not regulated. Large cities did that in thier areas and they are in the same place (look up Mesoptamia, Egypt, China or any European capital). Sure, Castle that once was on bank of river may be on lake now or there are islands with apple tree and sheep on them but general shape is preserved, espetialy in lower parts.

Well duh, maybe because that's not a fantasy map, but an actual map of Britain?
>>
>>51643626
I know its geographically accurate. I called it a fantasy map because it really blurs the lines of history. For example the map mixes celtic, anglo-saxon and roman names for places. For example Leeds is called Loidis, but York is labelled Eboracum instead of Eoforwick.
>>
>>51586425
It's beautiful.
I like every part of this map except the water which looks like I'm watching it on a very old tv with a messed up signal.
>>
>>51643714
Loidis is already a brythonic root.
>>
>>51645135
the first mention of it was in 770 something though. The Romans mentioned no town in the area despite its proximity to the forts at Templeborough in Rotherham and York. Loidis was a firmly Anglo-Saxon town that just took the name from celtic.

>>51546572

This may be heresy for a map thread, but is there a good way to randomly generate a map?

If I try to make one on my own, it always ends up being not-Europe. I think I need a base to start with and perhaps edit as needed if I want to make a slightly more original world.
