Thanks I wanted to get that feel from Dark Souls when you fight Sif. I still have to add all the swords and stuff but this is a start.

Bah I used too much wash (this is my first model) and now there are ugly pools on some surfaces

Not that anon, but it's pink foam insulation board. I used the same kind of product to do a base and a couple of small rises for my AoP a couple of years ago. You can cut it with a hot knife or hot wire foam cutter.
>>
>>51501412
The yellow looks fine. It's not perfect, but it's passable. You really need to work on your washes, though. That is what is really pushing it to look bad.

it may be the yellow, but other washes I would consider being OK at if its another color, on this word bearer I did it looks a bit better.

Definitely not one of my strong suits though, so I'll be working on that more.
>>
>>51501577
It's less noticeable in that mini, yeah, but it's still there. Best advice I can give is that if you are going to do a targeted wash, be sure to feather the wash into the main surface. Get a little wash on your brush, hit a small volume, rinse and wipe your brush, then pull the wash onto the main surface with the empty brush. Right where you would have that sharp, ugly coffee stain edge, touch the still-wet wash with a damp brush and pull it into the rest of the surface so it fades into the main color rather than being harsh and crappy.
>>
>>51501647
I'll give that technique a go. Thanks for the tips anon

That was my photo mate, and you better be quick, I'm not sure he has any left. Get into The Oldhammer Trading Company on Facebook and search for "Pirate soldier".

It was done by a guy who went for an interview with GW and sculpted that as his entry piece. He got the job but knocked it back for some moving country reasons, and so he has molds of that mini and offered to do a very limited run for those who wanted. Some people never went through with the purchase so he had some spare, but like I said better be quick.
>>
>>51501797

Oh shit nevermind, I found the secret link to his limited stock on his website, no need for all that Facebook shit. But, I do recommend the Oldhammer Trading Co.

I just got three square feet of this stuff out of the trash and I want to make it into bases but how should I go about doing it? I was thinking gluing one of the circles on the base and then filling in the gaps with greenstuff to make it all flat, keeping the edges indented to make it look like separate tilling. Should I put a plasticard background first?

Follow your heart anon, and you'll never go wrong.

I'm still torn on how to paint my Johnnys, so don't worry about being the only one here in that predicament. I know I want one in Flesh Tearers colors, but I'm not sure if I should paint him with the modern scheme or the old one. The other Johnny, if everything goes right, will be Flesh Eaters, complete with his own "KIL KIL KIL" markings.

Now if only I could git gud at painting a little faster so I can paint them up...

What's an alternative to just pouring acrylic and thinner straight into the cup of my airbrush? Pouring it in doesn't give me enough control over the proportions, I feel, but I don't want to waste paint and thinner by decanting it and then decanting it again from the intermediate containers.

>>
>>51504354
>Thanks! What sort of thing would I look up if I were to try and find those? I'm unsure where to start with just resin.
You can use any clear resing that doesn't yellow or shrink. There are some products specifically made and aimed at model builders though.
As I said railroad scenery companies usually offer a range of products from resins to effect gels and foils. Depending on what company and product you are looking at they have different properties though. Some are one part epoxies, i.e. air drying and other are two part component epoxies. What specifically you want to use probably depends on what you are working on.
For something small and shallow like filling a hollow base something like Vallejo stillwater is probably most convenient. You can just squeeze that out of the bottle and leave it to dry. If you are doing something more ambitious like filling a tranparent plinth to create an underwater scene you'll probably want to look into non-shrinking two part resins. Most of those you'll have to cast in several layers too, but it's still better than the alternatives.

Gels dry transparent and you can use those to model waves or something like that. If you put some on a piece of foil and leave it to dry you can attach it to something and then work it into a 2d waterfall later.

Foils with wave pattern on top are useful if you have to cover a large surface area like a lake or some such.

I'd definitely recommend looking up the usual suspects in that area - Woodland Scenics, Noch, Busch etc and see what they offer. They usually have some kind of brochure or youtube video showcasing what to do with the products.
Scale modeling blogs that are non-gaming related are also a valuable resource for that.

>Pretty funny that GW has gotten into weird shit like oxidisation technicals with really for water. Aside form varnish.
GW did at one point have water effects. They were as expensive as most other GW stuff is though.

Thanks lads. I'll look into this stuff.

I'll try to post images if I ever get round to completing my massive and growing backlog of painting.
>>
Lots of backlog to work on, but no motivation whatsoever.
Churned out warbands for a few different skirmish systems and a bunch of terrain lately but I can't get any games going so theres no actual incentive to get anything cohesive done. It's all starting to feel like a waste of time since it's just basically get a list done for Kill-Team or whatevs, build the models, paint them, pack them in a box and put them in the storage, what the fuck now?

How to get the motivation and the spark back? Pls halp.
>>
>>51504289
You put the lid or cap back on.
>>
>>51504514
test your skill by painting a single, nice model as good as you can, and put it on display. look at it to remind yourself of how well you can paint something when you treat it like art and not just batchpainting.
alternatively, buy a model for a friend and paint it for him as a suprise present.
>>
>>51504514
What >>51504544 said.

Get something awesome. Maybe even for a game you don't play and paint it to the best of your skills.
>>
>>51504544

I don't have any friends so no-one to give a present to.

But maybe painting a display mini wouldn't be such a bad idea.
>>
>>51504567
i started doing display pieces when i went to my local store and found they had 15 euro models for no game in particular discounted to two dollars a piece.
i bought half a dozen and thought shit, what do i even do with them, they dont fit in warhammer ,i guess i'll just paint it for painting it's sake, and then decided to really push it

Stop painting warhammer and paint something to be art. Try a 1/35 scale tank if you want, or a train, or something. Or a miniature figure if you want.

Or do a big conversion kitbash piece.

Assault Marines legs also work as 'running' if you don't care about robes. And, Chaos gods willing, we'll be getting new CSM sometime this year and judging by the new Rubrics, GW seems to have gotten the hint that combat squatting Marines look like shit.

I get the aversion, but the idea behind the red arm was sort of based on the FW Deathguard iconography list and taken further: http://m.imgur.com/fpdN59j?r

Not really strange for terran veterans to keep some momento of their pre-primarch iconography alive in personal/unit heraldry. Legions are big, some variation in scheme is expected.

I can see from the frosting on the leman russ that you used superglue. You should be using plastic glue like revell contacta for plastic models. On the plus side, it means you should just be able to pull the heavy bolter you stuck on upside down out of the socket and put it back in the right way up seeing as superglue is shit for holding plastic together compared to melting it together like you are supposed to scrublord.
>>
>>51505614
Bolter shells it depends on how bright you want them to be but as the model itself it quite dark I'd go for the following.

Base: Balthasar Gold
Wash: Agrax Earthshade
Highlight: Ghenna Gold.

That way the bolters will retain the metallic golden look without looking like bits of chopped up Stormcast.

For the gas tank I'd do a red colour to tie in with the rest of the weapon as it's the lowest part of colour on the model.

Base: Mephiston Red
Wash: Carroburg Crimson
Highlight: Evil Sunz Scarlet.

A nice brooding red with a highlight to draw attention to make it 'pop'. I'd do a gold like above on the skull, for contrast and also because GOLD SKULLS.
>>
>>51505640
>Minimum on parent chapter

I can understand why. If you're looking for distinct aesthetic, the chapter specific stuff can be bullshit. For me, it's a reason to make as many snowflakes as possible without investing in a particular space marine chapter.

I heard someone say that it's a lot easier to use stencils to do all the diamond patterns they tend to have. I'm pretty good at stenciling and have a fair bit of spray paint. What would be a good material to cut from for these, since it looks like they wrap around the legs a bunch? And would high quality spray paint (like Montana Gold) be good for these in place of an airbrush?
>>
>>51503350
by cleaning them after use and using brush preserver.
>>
Pic related arrived in the mail today. Gonna use these in a variety of systems, don't play KoW at all. Probably going to make a deathrattle army for AoS out of these aswell.
It's my first really big batch of minis to get done relatively quickly.
How do I keep up the motivation to paint a million skellingtons in a row? Anyone got tips on how not to kill yourself with boring batch-painting?

I would never attempt to stencil something as tiny as an eldars thigh. Freehand and clean up is the way to to. Especially lacking an airbrush. Your just asking for some thick spraypaint buildup.

Wanted to post him when I was done with him entirely but I am really conflicted here and would love some advice and thoughts on his cape. I really want to make it stand out so I was thinking Black on the outside and green on the inside. Or even maybe trying to go with a purple scheme. I decided to put one layer of green inside and... I just don't know. I think it goes well with the rest of the armor but I can't stop thinking that it's a little too Christmasy.

Consider doing a light edge highlight with that gw paint The Fang. IMO it makes a big difference on the sharpest edges of the armor to give more depth.

About white spray versus other colors, I decided to put it off in favor of grey because of something Duncan say in the beginner tutorials. Is what he says about darker sprays getting more shading definition true?

As for the going straight for Yriel, I honestly prefer the ~slightly~ orangier tint. Most of the time spent was because I not only did two, but three base layers after totally mucking up the shades on the first layer.

IG has plenty of room for conversion and personality, anon. If you really want to go wild on it, you could make them renegades that counts-as IG and go nuts with conversion.

If you don't wanna be a filthy fucking heretic you can do a lot of simple things like chalk kill counters and names on the sides of tanks, different colored uniform piping for veteran/new soldiers, decoration from the platoon's home world, etc. Really, the possibilities are endless.
>>
>>51514902
Those are pretty good ideas I guess.

I dunno, it's just disappointing that the IG has no really unique and cool models to paint. No dragons, no evil birds, no heroes or villains, just tanks and bigger tanks.

I mean I knew what I was getting in to when I picked them and I like playing IG, but as my painting skills have grown I feel the need to push them more.

Maybe I should start collecting another army as well.

POW, RIGHT IN THE WALLET.

Thanks a lot to the anon who suggested mixing the flock with glue and then sprinkling flock over - it looks amazing. Oh that's understandable, the color tone is a preference. White and yriel is just one less step than spray gray, averland, yriel. It helps speed up the process.

You're familiar with recess shading too, right? Careful Reikland flesh shade in the cracks only gives a nice definition without making your armor blotchy on the flat surfaces. You can even just dry brush with yriel to clean up after you recess wash to finish all the yellow at once. Great for squad painting.

I've tried both globbing the shade and detail lining. I don't have the hand for it, but I do like the effect it gives.
