They used to be called Wolves and wear pelts on their armor and call squads packs. That was about it.

Storm of Chaos introduced Wulfen which were kind of like old timey Wolfman Werewolves. Still kind of cool is you roll with the B-Movie/Pulp fiction vibe.

The new stuff looks like it came straight out of a power rangers show and the writing is He-Man tier retarded.

Not really that surprising people don't care for it anymore.
And while it is 'about as 40k as anything else' in that it was published by GW that perception can vary wildy depending on what edition you got into the game.

Rick Priestley also refered to the Horus Heresy as a parody of Paradise Lost and he expressed that the new writers kinda missed the points he made.
