I am guilty of doing this.
First time playing D&D.
Gave DM some shit about being prince of the Feywild (the whole thing) and that it's my destiny to save it from my evil uncle (mistakes).

My character who apparently had experience in battles and was a master tracker and also a rich as fuck pampered prince who had access to masterful teachers.
Still Level 1.

Eventually the campaign ended half the characters killed or captured in an orc rape camp and my character turned into a tree forever.
>>
>>51485536
Don't be scared DM.
He's passionate, nothing more.
Maybe the rest of the info is in that second drop.
Talk to him personally, develop, and remove parts WITH HIM if neccesary.
Yes it's extra work, but you took the job.
Who knows, you could actually produce something really awesome and enjoyable with him.
But work with him, create and edit with him.
Cooperation and help is key.
I expect a follow-up, OP. Don't mess up.

>tell players I'd like to run a more investigative & player-driven style campaign next go around.

>They're all agree and are on board for it.

>Send out a dossier 3 months before I plan on starting the campaign giving out basic information about the world, politics, and starting city.

>Give a list of questions they should answer about their characters and request specific motivations and goals their characters would have.

>Ask them to talk with me if they have any questions; ask them to coordinate with each other so that the characters play well together.

>I do this 3 months ahead so I can tailor the campaign to their characters interests.

>Receive nothing until 1-2 weeks before. Half the characters are from across the globe with no discernible reason to be in the starting city. None of them have any ties to each other. Half of them have vague and shallow motivations like "Wants to steal stuff." or "Wants to bounty hunt."

>They get upset when I resort to adventures reminiscent to dungeon crawls in between the few plot hooks I can come up with that actually relate to their party.

>Starting Shadowrun 4e game
>have That Guy as a player
>That Guy likes playing females exclusively
>catgirls whenever he can
>tries to ERP if he isn't shut down immediately
>still goes on about his character being slutty/whorish/excessively attractive/etc
>Tell him if he's going to play, no catgirl, no female characters in general, and no erp
>if he presents me with a character sheet with either of those, or starts erp'ing, rocks fall and he dies
>he agrees

>first session to start with character creation
>everyone finishes up and I approve
>except That Guy
>Hands me his sheet
>Sniper/infiltration specialist with excessively illegal gun and gear
>worse yet
>a SURGE to be female catgirl
>think Trout from Shadowrun Story Time but with boobs and cat ears
>immediately reject it, give him a second chance to change to non-female and non-catgirl
>he refuses, will only play as catgirl.
>remind him of our agreement
>still refuses, will only play catgirl
>sigh, tell him I better not hear any bitching when he dies/gets locked up/etc
>we start, simple "infiltrate and steal shit" mission
>That Guy wants to be super-duper cool sniper, doesn't help with infiltration
>instead sits outside while everyone else breaks in and does the job
>Everyone else is successful until the corp security gets alerted on their way out
>That Guy starts killing corp security while everyone else escapes
>flips shit when he "fails" to escape the police after team finishes mission

Presumably That Guy thought I was bluffing. I think a lot of it was simply that the other players and I mostly put up with his shit in other games, which none of the people attending that night were GM's of, to be polite. So he probably didn't think I would actually get rid of his character the very first session. Hm...now that I think about, I might have a couple more about him.
>>
>>51486552
I've always hated the trope of standing victorious on the adjacent roof as the cops show up, of course they're going to fucking catch you, you have to get down all those damn stairs and you just gave yourself away.

I had a player who actively taunted the police from the adjacent roof after a botched mission that turned into a bloodbath. He complained when he was caught coming out of the elevator.
>>
>>51485720
I understand that he is passionate and I already worked some things out with him. But there is more.
He made his character asocial despite me telling him that asocial characters don't work well in party. He asked me specifically if his concept will work. He even had a backup. For some reason he didn't listen.
He asked me to help him with redistributing stats, which I did. In the end he returned to his original stats. Nothing to be mad about, but it's still pretty strange.
One of the questions was very crucial for the campaign. I made everyone personalised questions to make PCs fit into general setup. His second drop contained answer to it, but it was sent to me when I had no time reading. However, I asked him about this privately right before the start of session.
On the good side, first session was pretty great, and players really enjoyed it. This particular player turned out to be pretty nice: had some actual roleplay, worked well with the party for the most time, knew the rules of the system that was new to him and even had some physical props for his character.
Everything seemed fine, but then yesterday he made a move outside of the game that was pretty That Guy thing to do from my point. I've accidentally stumbled upon his post on social media, where he tells that he found new interesting system (Referring to system we play), he wants to run a campaign with it and he's looking for players.
System we play is not very popular and I had a really hard time organizing a party. I really don't know if I'm putting to much into his post or is it really bad move from his side. I haven't talked with him about it, though. Do I have a reason to worry or will I act as a control freak if I will discuss it with him?
>>
>>51486781
Well he may have pissed off the team hacker. Who may have just slapped a nice big ARO on That Guy, alerting everyone to where he is all the time, without That Guy noticing. The same hacker may also have hated the constant catgirls and attempts to derail games into erp'ing. The world may never know.

>Playing Doctor Who RPG
>One buddy is a human Time Agent, really good at talking and tech
>Another is some fly race, good at investigating, little bit talking
>I'm a cyborg that is mostly tech with a little combat
>Original plan was for me to be the "muscle"
>then another player dropped
>That Guy was the only one who wanted to join in and he had a "cool character idea"
>And our GM allowed custom races, which was perfect for this "cool character idea"
>So That Guy went with the only thing he loves more than catgirls
>Something stupidly overpowered and game-breaking
>That Guy is a krogan
>Specifically Urdnot Wrex
>He may have written down the name “Rex” but
>He was searching for a “Liara” as a love interest
>Was a 7+ ft tall lizard with a shotgun that could murder anything in melee
>that also had psychic powers
>And solved every problem with extreme violence mostly because he couldn't do anything else
>In a game where murder was supposed to be the last option
technically he flat out told us it was a Mass Effect reference, just none of us knew enough about Mass Effect at the time to realize it was as close a copy as he could manage and the GM would allow

Kicker is when he retired “Rex”, the next character was mostly the same ability wise. Except now it was some catgirl thing with wings and a spear. Thankfully That Guy moved and we didn't have to put up with it for more than one or two sessions.
>>
>>51486552
Why did you not tell him to fuck off then? You proved yourself to be his anal bitch by not kicking him.
>>
>>51487097
Oh thank god you actually talked.
Too many times I've seen stuff fall apart because the DM and player refused to work together.
Just ask he gets the stuff in earlier, or if he needs time, to then highlight key points you need answers for. Asocial....well that's more of a party development issue. But it seems he works with the party anyway, so not too big of a worry.
As for the second part....well always discuss. Communication and friendliness is key. Don't be overly hostile. He may intend to simply run a campaign with all of you, and he just wants an opportunity to DM. Ask him if he needs help, and to answer your own feelings which I am getting an impression of, ask why he's suddenly splitting off privately. Usually, it's because the player may feel unsatisfied (unfortunately). Ask him if that's the case. If not the case, then just let him do his own thing. He may just want to DM without interrupting you.
Hope it all goes well in the end. Communication and friendliness is key. Parties can easily fall apart from misinterpretation.

>>
>>51487264
It's not that bad, come on.
Leave SOME stuff private. DM legits wants to improve things.
>>
>>51487295
I just wanna read it, but I mean he doesnt have to.
>>
>>51487209
Simple. At that time he was living with two of my other players. They, not That Guy, had offered to host. However, we figured that That Guy would be a whiny ass and disturb everyone if we didn't allow him to play. Since we couldn't justify kicking him out of his home and no one else could host, we came up with the rules. You can see the result of the rules in my previous post.
>>
>>51487308
Sorry got a bit defensive. I've taken OP's case personally.
I'm really trying to prevent disasters across /tg/ involving DMs. I have just seen too many crashes which could be avoided with proper handling.
Communication, communication, communication.
It helps so much.
Anyway, continue on anon, I apologize.
>>
>>51487240
Thanks, I'll try to talk with him.

>>51486382
>>51486423
>>51487264
I can give a summary or translate it roughly, because it's not written in English.
>>
I play with an old friend group that has scattered across the country over the years. We play through roll20. One of them insists on rolling with physical dice on his end. Unsurprisingly his rolls are never blow average or even average at all, they are always suspiciously good. The previous DM allowed this to continue for some time. I'm now taking over as DM since our normal DM wants a break, and the player in question is insisting that he be allowed to continue doing this.
>>
>>51485536
Anyway OP, I've got to go now.
I'm so intensely happy you were able to follow through on catching up with him. I tell practically every DM some variation of that advice, and it's never failed.
And I've never even DMed.
OP, I hope it resolves happily. I provided one last reply on what you told me of the situation. Remember, be friendly.
Players have desires. Some want to do something outside, others have secret dislikes. Find out, and help them out. You'll be helping yourself in the process. Work it out, help make their characters. A lot of stuff often gets put here as "ergh autism, bad concept"
If that's the case, work it out. Explain, modify, make new backstory or just change keypoints.
Please succeed OP.
It's sad to see things go poorly.
>>
>>51487418
And on a final note, if you make a new thread-put a link in this one. I want to keep track. See if my advice continues to succeed.
>>
>>51487459
I've sent him a message where I offer some help. I'll write how it turned out. Thanks again.

>>51487418
It's not particularly cringeworthy or terrible, but I'll try to post some excerpts. My players don't read /tg/, so I hope I can write this. I hope it will not be very dickish of me.
In brief his character is somewhat a rip-off of Cumberbatch's Sherlock, but with more angst and edge. I'll try make translation as literal as possible.
>Hometown of Jakob is not far away from the place where he lives. Jake's hometown is London, where he grew in noble and wealthy family of Newgate. Edward and Amanda Newgate were his loving parents, and his older brother Oliver Nathan Newgate was his role model. But from his young age boy was always attracted to danger with mix of urge to knowledge. As his older brother used to say - "Once you set up a trap for Santa on Christmas Eve, and at night it triggered with loud noise, I don't know why, but when me and parents came up you've sat near trap and cried loudly" He remembered why he cried, his trap didn't catch the correct person, that means that his mission was not accomplished, and the whole plan failed.

>When boy went to school, he was on two (or even three) steps ahead of his classmates. But no one was in shock or awe, because his brother was in the same school and he was on four or five steps ahead. To show his difference with Oliver, Jake began to cause mess and vandalize, so he could show his brother and his school place they deserve. He was able to bully everyone except his brother. It's almost like he saw through every plan Jakob wanted to execute. Years went by, Oliver graduated as the best student in the history of school. By this time Jake became a leader of local baddies and everyone knew him and feared him. Elder or younger, bigger or less, weaker or stronger, nothing of it mattered. He caused fear and respect of everyone in this school. But then something happened that had to happen sooner or later. Five goons watched for him. They were not schoolboys, he even didn't know who they were. The fact is they beat him up badly, he tried to protect himself, but he failed. His attempts only made their beating stronger. They were not shy about the scale, it seemed that they wanted to make a stake out of Newgate, because they had a lot of tools of beating. Everything blured, pain from several places evolved into one, big vermilion spot that dimmed everything that could be dimmed, and he standed only because they held him in the air, he saw a knife's blade that shined like a mirror in hand of one bastard. Then there was a sharp pain, and darkness. Newgate woke up in hospital, everything was fixed and bandaged, and nearby sat a nasty face of his "brother", who smiled and asked - "How are you, little brother?"
>>
>>51488890
>"Go to hell" - Jakob replied, it seemed that it was all that he could say at the moment. Oliver didn't answer and leaned on back of the chair and crossed his legs so he looked like a statue of some Baron from 18th century or so. And his face looked overly pretentiously and forced, he tried to portray that he didn't care about what I've said so much that he looked like a photo in profile of some actor or poet. Younger brother looked at him no less pretentious, and asked - "Were they found? The one who beat me?" -
Oliver returned to his position with interest and answered - "Not only beaten, but robbed and perhaps raped, investigation is confused" - he laughed gruffly, it was like he tried to find someone to laugh at his joke, but there were no one but us, and I didn't rate his humoristic impulse he continued - No, they where not found, and it's not likely they will be - he said with seriousness that had a creppy undertones.
Two weeks later in the news Jake saw that one of this guys jumped from the bridge. And so one after another he found familiar faces in the list of dead sooner or later.
Some years ago Oliver get a high post in special forces, and phrase "Big brother watches you became literal for Jacob.
And that was his first dump. There is also a second.
Do I need to translate the rest?
>>
>>51487459

Continuation
>Jakob've grown up and restored himself, after that incident he renewed his views and understood what is life for him. Life is a sequence of trials and only truly hard trials are worthy of his presence, he started to learn criminalistics but soon he understood that he don't need it very much, because he realised that the strongest challenge can be received from human, who is afraid of being caught. Jakob chose the way of private detective, but soon he understood that Oliver will not allow him to fully embrace himself and feel adrenalin. He asked some starting funds from parents and went to Washington to "gain a degree". With his moving, Jakob's life of Detective have truly started. He learned some tricks from locals, starting with simple interrogation tricks and ending with car-jacking. In search for cases he traveled the whole country. And once he has stumbled on truly strange one. There were no signs of breaking in, there were no other signs, but the body was torn apart like it was attacked by a pack of hungry dogs. The nature of injuries, in contrary to first analysis by criminalists, were absolutely different and a lot of them were unnatural, there are no creatures of nature capable of leaving such marks. In the course of investigation he found that deceased seek help of psychologist.
I try to keep the same structure and grammar, but I feel that I make it more readable instead.
>>
>>51491230
>Jakob signed for the appointment with same psychologist and interrogated him hard, by the end he found that deceased was interested in shadows that tortured him during his childhood. After treatment he behaved strangely. He frequently freezed and looked in the emptiness, like he saw something there, something... Terrifying... Jakob asked for the same treatment. After half an hour of preparing, the room was filled with incense and it painted itself with wrong colours, like in the old pictures. Words of psychologist flew to him like he moved to the far away place and where deafend like through layer of water. He could not figure out the words, but he felt like someone was driving him into trance similar to drugs, he heard clear command - "You are six year old, two seconds later you will wake up in your room the minute after midnight"...
>>
>>51491244
>And here he was a little boy in his room, he was woken up by some noise. Jake was in shock by the fact of teleporting him, adult man, in his own mind with the help of hypnosis. Stange screeching broke the silence, he looked through the window, there was a thing that his consciousness carefully hid under the pile in memories, but now it was out. He remembered like a little wrongly constructed man with his limbs bent in direction opposite of normal and broken stangely twisted spine, looked at him with his dead eyes and scratched the window. But terrifying midget run away, and it meant only one thing. Light shone through the window and circle of marrionetes appeared on the walls, scary, broken dolls, dolls with faces that cannot be seen, dolls that were true masters of this room. Jakob remembered that there were rules, one of them was that you could not look in their faces. In one moment all the shadows got out of the walls and began their strange, convulcive and discontinuous dance. They moved and bent like they had no joints, and just bend on a whim. Jakob groped old coin under the pillow. He understood what night it was, this coin was stolen by him from his father and hidden under the pillow. It was done just to gain some attention from father, he also remembered that Oliver will take it away in the morning and will return it to father like a good son. Jakob will be punished, things that he saw will not be believed in. He silently watched the diabolical marrionetes, he was afraid. He silently cried and did nothing more. He knew that he could not make a sound, dolls don't have eyes, but their hearing was perfect. Then he suddenly decided that because it was just a dream, he could do what he never could before, he could look at their faces.
>>
>>51491472
>He gathered some courage, dropped the blanket and looked at one of them. What he saw was a hard thing to describe. The face was a human-like, but it consisted of bloody smudges on wood black as a crow. It seemed that the doll noticed him, like he lost his layer of invisibility just by looking at it. Creature reacted momentary. Without a sound only hissing with it's joints, it moved to him, not by walking, but by crawling on the floor like a cat, with only difference that in the process of movement it writhed and skipped. Many other dolls started to do the same. He jumped and with his adult reflexes took a gun and shoot three times, but he didn't see his pistol, yet at the same time he felt all of it: weight, recoil, everything except visuals. It seemed that creature was not affected by pistol. He wanted to scream and retreat, but he fell down and doll loomed over him, she did a terrible hit, from right forearm through his chest went a big clear cut. Time has stopped, Jakob stopped it himself, mind defeated subconscious. But he understood that the only way out is to manifest reality, return to it. Jakob concentrated and entered in trans within the trans. One... Two... Three
>He opened his eyes, but with the room disappeared his childish romanticism. He feet his terrible bleeding cut on his chest, his hand held a pistol, he shoot and he even hit someone. Psychologist couldn't react in time. He quickly analysed situation and run out of the room, he couldn't run for long. In a moment he understood that he's getting weaker, and he fell on the ground. He woke up in apartment. By his side there was a man who looked like greek. He stared at him.
And that was the last of his dumps. I've tried to translate his style, so if something seems strange, than it is meant to be so.
>>
>>51491648
Cannot find appropriate reaction image for my confusion.

Be careful what you wish for. Everytime I get burnt out or busy I try to encourage one of my players to GM.

The results are always... Less than desirable. The sessions take months to plan, are extremely short on planned content, have bad improvisation, no real motives for anyone or interesting set pieces, and generally wind up taking too long as I have to explain rules to the GM that they should have understood even when they were players.

Why do people feel the need to say stupid things like this?

Played with some dude who always felt the need to try and one-up you on the weirdest shit. Another thing was making his rogue character always present in some form or just "show up" despite his dude being on the other side of town or simply not privy to it, at this point queue in him fabricating up some mess of an explanation to justify his actions. It turns to shit-flinging real fast.

Final line reminds me of a little story that happened with the friend of mine.
>Someone asked him to help with a little theatrical number for some cosplay expo.
>It was very urgent because they needed someone on a key role, so my friend agreed.
>During the preparation cosplayers acted towards my friend like a bunch of shitbags.
>From his words they were very arrogant, egoistic and simply a bad kind of people.
>My friend is definitely not a person who provokes conflict, so I was puzzled.
>I asked him why does he still rehearses with them and he said that he has a little surprise.
>Finally, the day of the expo happened and with it came the surprise.
>During theatrical number my friend derailed it a little bit by inserting random one-liners, but kept it so the play could continue as planned.
>For example, he appeared on the scene where heroine waited for him.
>"Here you are, little bitch!"
>Or when he was introduced to some character and this character told where he comes from, friend quoted:
>"Only steers and queers come from there, and I don't see your horns so that kinda narrows it down."
>Audience liked the number and by the end when all cast appeared accompanied by applause, my friend said loudly.
>"I didn't want to do it! I was forced to!"
>Number won a second place, but cosplayers were angry at him
>Then in the dressing room he said
>"It was pretty fun! When the next expo will be?"

I have done this, but only as an extra. I wrote a solo run my Shadowrun character did once as a short story, but that was extra, bonus, fluff - a way for me to work out how I thought the character would work in practice. But I didn't use that as a substitute for the info the GM wanted, but an addition to.

I don't understand people that don't do that.

I love the way this guy sounds so tired and exasperated with the situation. No fear or anything, just wants to gtfo please.

" Ooh, what have I done :/ "
" Oh god i'm engaged to a douglas fir :o "

Honestly anon, if Jon thinks his ranger is Tough Guy McTough who isn't scared of no demon nightmares, then that's what his character is. (Of course it's up to you whether you accept fearless characters and whether this has a cost, for the same reason a player can't go "no I spot the sneak attack, I'm really perceptive" or "no I shake off the poison" without appropriate stats.)

If you need to explain why the ranger is scared anyway, just say the feelings of fear are magic.

>John, you have a nightmare, you wake up screaming.
>No, I don't
>Why?
>I'm tough!!!
>Okay. Despite being a tough guy who's never scared, this nightmare was really not like anything you've had before. Roll Wisdom (or whatever).
>Nat 1
>You scream, even though you feel like you should be in control of the situation.

But then again it all comes down to whether you treat character details like their fearlessness as fluff or crunch and how they impact your game.

More or less how it went. He literally plays the same dull fuck ever character.

So he charged into an oni fight in pjs and no weapons. Double crit, instadeath.

Will saves and fear-based conditions are there right for these situations, you know.
>My character doesn't afraid of anything!
>Yeah but take this DC 15 Will save against fear
>But it's my dump save and I rolled an eight
>THEN YOU CRY LIKE A BITCH

If the game has mechanics to represent courage or force of will and a player wants their character to be tough and fearless, they'll better invest in whatever ability or save or skill the game provides to represent that.
If you want to be fearless in D&D, you'll better come up with a combination of good Wisdom, a class with a good Will save and whichever feat improves Will or fear resistance. If you don't do that you can imagine your precious character as brave as you want, but when the dice decide he screams and flees, he screams and flees. And that works for mundane scares as well as magical ones.

This. You can't just be good at something because "thats what I want to roleplay". If you want to roleplay someone who is really perceptive, then you need to invest in perception. No you don't get it just because you are an elven ranger.

>He may just want to DM without interrupting you.
That's what I would start off assuming. He wants a crack at DMing, but you're already doing that for this group in this system, so it would be at est redundant and at worst stepping on your toes.

You could maybe offer the opportunity to have him guest DM for a session or two or run a one-off if you're open to that.

I once played 5e with a guy playing a warlock who vaporized everything that so much as looked at him funny, because his spells were basically powered by Cthulhu (he was kind of an edgelord and played the only Evil-aligned character in the group). The DM counterbalanced this by making him take frequent sanity checks, often during fights or other stressful situations. If he failed the roll he'd slip into a crazed trance and was useless without outside intervention, and he failed a LOT of rolls. Guy didn't think too much of this until our halfling realized he could snap the warlock out of it pretty much instantly by punching him in the balls.

>Co-DMing a Curse of Strahd campaign in 5e
>Three entirely new players
>One has quickly found solace in being "That Guy"
>Will try to dominate conversations or be in the spotlight as much as possible and then will either bury his face into his phone while scowling or demand the rest of the party gets moving when he's not
>Party gets to the gates of a town where they heard they can find a weapon to fight Strahd
>Guards at the gate ask why they're there: That Guy immediately says they want a weapon inside to fight Strahd with
>Guards deny entry because if the party were to fail Strahd would unleash his wrath upon the town
>That Guy declares he rolls to persuade. DM asks just how he's going to persuade the guards. That Guy has no answer so he starts threatening the guards with violence because he's... a Neutral Warlock or something.
>Guards in the towers of the gate raise their bows
>DM is ready to call for Initiative when another new player who is playing a Halfling Bard quickly jumps forward and tells everyone to calm down as he was one of the most popular minstrels in all the land ("Just not around here!") and the party were his guards and entourage. He goes on to say that the whole thing about fighting Strahd was a fabrication just so he could hide in the back because he didn't want to show his face and cause nearby fans to go nuts because he was suddenly there.
>This little act goes on for a minute or two, everyone at the table is laughing or clapping as That Guy just sits there, scowling that all attention turned from him
>The Guards are believing the story when That Guy just blurts out "You all should know that HE is full of shit!" while pointing at the Bard
