Been playing Prime today, so I was thinking... How strong is Samus, really? I mean, a lot of what she does is the suit. Jumpan and shootan are mostly the suit giving her lockons and things like space jump boots.
I know one source has her being brought up on a 100G planet, and while I love the idea of an unarmoured Samus surprising people by being able to pick up cars thanks to magic bird DNA science; I don't think it's canon considering she doesn't just punch her way to victory.

Basically, if I compared Samus to a regular Federation trooper or generic human soldier, how strong is she sans chozo suits?

That's the conundrum isn't it? We just don't have much hard lore for her abilities without her suit outside of that one part in Metroid Zero Mission. But if we were to base her abilities on that, then she's would already be much stronger than even a top condition natural human. During that mission, she routinely survive multiple melee attacks from giant space pirate soldiers (contact), their laser beams; she could jump as high as she does in her suit and wall jumps (so the suit essentially just off-sets its own weight and give her the space jump ability) and run almost as fast as the space pirate soldier. All under super high gravity (100G canonically, which is so high it's a bit silly). Given all this, her choice to fight at a range is just a result of her training and preference. This makes sense since she is probably a stickler for efficiency, given how much time she spend during each mission on gathering different upgrades.
>>
>>51464928
>given how much time she spend during each mission on gathering different upgrades
You mean about 25% different and 75% the same stuff she lost 5 minutes ago

I wish I had half the balls Samus has. She rushed after Ridley in Super Metroid with nothing but Power Suit, Power Beam & not even morph ball.
>>

>>51464451

>>
>>51465665
She presumably gives some of them back. Prime 2's upgrades are easily explained as situational & unneeded outside the Dark Aether. Prime 3's phazon shit is explainable but not the Ice Missiles, Plasma beam, etc. Most confusing is Super Metroid happening right after Metroid 2. I guess she donated her gear to scientists or something. She could become rich if she patented her gear.

If you are willing to take the manga as canon (it was hosted on Nintendo's website and there are manga panels on the Japanese version of Zero Mission) Samus can jump good, fall on the ground hard enough to create a crater deeper than she's tall (she was four years old then) and be barely bruised,
>>
>>51465865
Is the manga canon? Some of the things there don't match up to Zero Mission despite Zero Mission having Old Bird & the ruins.

>It's just that doing so in the suit scuffs the finish, and it is a bitch to clean.
That begs the question, would the SA-X be able to just 'refresh' itself by doing that creepy waver the X do to get rid of stains and marks, or would it actually be forced to clean it?

It's hard to say. In the suit I'd say she's capable of lifting around 10 tons or so, since in the manga she could punch through robots that resist missiles, and in Other M she could lift and throw a lava whale physically. There aren't really any other examples of her physical strength in any media, since she favors ranged combat.

Out of suit, though, she has shown some super athleticism. Capable of jumping 20+ feet in the manga and fast enough to jump in from of an energy weapon before her suit had even finished materializing. She knows at least a little hand to hand and could take on several members of the Federation Police unarmed. Otherwise, again, not much on her physical abilities.

>>51464928
>100G canonically

Technically it's not really canon, just an extrapolation from given information. The origin of the figure is that the given mass of Zebes was off by an order of magnitude, the actual number making it over 800 times as dense as Earth. And because mass affects gravity, some fans calculated the gravity Zebes should have at that mass, and it ended up being something stupid like 860 times the gravity of Earth.

So yeah, Zebes' gravity has never been officially given, that number is a calculation based on some official numbers that HAVE been given but are widely believed to be a typo. For the record the scan says something like 4 trillion teratons, but if you replace that with 4 billion teratons instead, you get a much more reasonable figure that's actually slightly smaller than Earth, IIRC.

Can we talk about the morph ball? It's simultaneously one of the most amazing and impractical abilities she has.

Technically it's astounding. Becoming energy, with a physical presence being a small sphere that can drop bombs and boost around? That's incredible.
But you have to wonder what the magic space birds were thinking when they decided that yesz this was something their warriors needed. The ability to become meter wide spheres, because the galaxy is littered with meter wide tubes for some reason.
I can only assume iit was some bizarre negroid countermeasure.

>So in case negroids get out of hand, our warriors need to counter their draining
>Okay, so these energy balls will force them to detach
>But there's no viable delivery method
>Unless.. we turn the warrior INTO energy!
>Okay, but then we need to contain ir
>The most stable way is a sphere
>So in an emergency the warrior can enter the anti-magnetic delivery mode and detonate the bomb
>Let's test it!
>Heh, wow look at that! You can roll around like that however you want!
>That's kind of neat

If we take the comic as canon (with some translation errors) then it's likely that Samus is several times stronger than a normal Federation soldier, and the time we see her outside of her suit in Zero Mission mostly confirms it.

Technically all of Prime is supposed to be considered non-canon, even if it fits in the timeline nicely between Zero Mission and Metroid 2.

Most of her bounty hunting is done for free, as most of the ships she's flown are loaners from the Federation. She probably does have a private ship of her own (maybe the one we see in Super Metroid), but I think she is forced to disarm most of her stuff after every excursion by the Federation because of the fear that she goes rogue and starts to blow shit up, no one could stop her (which is mostly true, based on SA-X damage in Fusion).

Sakamoto never actually said that, so it's a shame the myth became so widely believed. He said it was a "gaiden" thing, which more or less means a side story in the same sense you'd say sidequest. Not the main story of Metroid, but it's still considered canon.

I'm convinced that DoomGuy isn't really a sexual being anymore, hasn't been for quite a while. I would compare him to Adol from the Ys games in that the only thing that brings him anything close to sexual pleasure is fighting demons. In fact DoomGuy is a bit worse than Adol since you can at least argue that Adol might have a thing for the character Feena. DoomGuy has no one at all that he might be remotely interested in romantically.

In short, when it comes to sex, DoomGuy has left humanity behind.

My completely unsubstantiated headcannon is that most of those upgrades are adapted for use only on the planet they are picked up in. Like, they would only work on SR388.

>Ice Beam and Missile tho?

Well, differing gravities and all? Hmmm.
Another possibility is that having all of those upgrades on all at once drains the suits batteries like nobodies business and she has to remove them to bring down her recharging bills.

The fact that Chozo schematics are all one-shots that are permanently removed after each mission is pretty weird and stupid.
But Chozo Science IS pretty weird and stupid.

In fact, ALL Scientists in the Metroid setting are Stupid and Weird, with the only differences between them being levels of Competency.
Chozo being at the top, Federation Scientists at the bottom.

Space Pirates are between the two. They don't do what they set out to do, but they still end up with something.

Lemme find a pasta I did on the subject a whileback.

>Pretty much every scientist in the Metroid setting literally never ever think about the consequences of what they're doing. The only difference between the Chozo, Space Pirates and Earth Federation is levels of compentency.

>Case in point, the Metroids themselves.

>Chozo 1: We've found a race of mimic parasites on SR388 that could infiltrate and destroy all life in the galaxy
>Chozo 2: This is a problem. What should we do.
>Chozo 1: Let's create a super-predator that feeds off them to keep their numbers down
>Chozo 2: ...could we not just blow the whole planet up? We know how. I mean there's a planetary scale self destruct right here on Zebes. We could totally just put it on a ship and fly it to SR388 and detonate it.
>Mother Brain: I agree, I am all for this plan that involves removing the one safeguard that's stopping me from wiping out your pathetic dwindling species.
>Chozo 1: SORRY IT'S TOO LATE I AM ALREADY DOING A SCIENCE
>Chozo 2: ...wait, what did you just say Mother Brain?

Then you have Space Pirates

>Pirate 1: Let's try to mass produce the Metroids using radiation!
>Pirate 2: Whoops, instead of making lots of them, we've just made the original huge!
>Pirate 1: ...I know! Let's bombard Kraid with this stuff when he's asleep! It will be hilarious!
>Pirate 2: Oh god yes! He won't be able to use the tubes to get out of his room!
>Pirate 1: HA HA classic Space PiraTUUUUUUUBES
>Pirate 2: TUUUUUBES
>Pirate 1: TUUUUUBES

You know, you say that but the Federation has it's moments. They were able to actually effectively use Phazon reliably and without insanity with their elite troopers and associated technology, plus they apparently were able to work the kinks out of mother brain to make their own friendly AI biocomputers.

Way I see it, by Prime 3 they may be low on the tech scale but they're rising rapidly by making shit that actually functions reliably and safely. On the other hand they're running headlong into the civilisation filter that exists in the Metroid universe of an over-dependency on technology and forgetting magic/spiritualism.

...yeah for about two months. Then Ridley pops back up. Plus the fact that he went straight to and from Zebes implies that the Federation didn't even have any kind of surveillance in place in the area, which is bogglingly stupid from them.

I mean, they sent in exploration teams to SR388 and that place was just a Chozo outpost. At the very least that place should have been SWARMING with Federation Scientists trying to grab all of the lost Chozo tech that Motherbrain had amassed.

There should have been a station orbiting Zebes AT LEAST as big as the one from Fusion, and at the very least a sizable fleet on station. I mean, who fucking knows what else aside from Mother Brain was down there that could get woken up.

I loved her in the old Captain N comics. In one of them, she accepts a contract from the heroes to help beat Mother Brain by destroying some valuable mineral or the like.

Once she's paid, she betrays them and hands them over to MB, because she paid more.

Once she's paid, she breaks the heroes out to prove that she's one their side, and the valuable minerals are destroyed in the confusion.

Cut to Samus in her ship counting her two paychecks, with a pile of the valuable minerals behind her.

Made me want to marry her.

>>
>>51486689
That humorous image is actually rather nonsense. Samus dislikes working with others & only done it once before with a superior she likes before according to Fusion. Makes me wonder what all those times in Prime 3 count as. Not to mention how hard a smaller portions of the fan base complained about how the Talking Metroid's were prior to the whole different growth cycle thing. Somehow, they forget to mention the number of times Fusion fucked with everything. From the Omega Metroid being weak to ice instead of Super Missiles to the retcons, it's a disaster which Other M had the idiotic move to build upon.
>>

>Following the commands of this blunt, computerized CO is something I have to bear, as it was a condition of my taking the ship. For someone who dislikes taking orders, this is the second time I've found myself having to do so. It makes me recall my other CO...
When you criticize Other M, have some legit criticisms. There are plenty of those, railroading, dull as fuck voice acting, why stick with these?
>>
>>51487025
I didn't think there was that much wrong with Fusion's story except the weird mix up at the end.
>>
>>51487100
It was the execution. If there is a list of things not to do in a Metroid game, Fusion's railroading would be somewhere near the top. Unlike the rather well done minimalism of Super Metroid & later games, they infodump it 24/7 & have Samus obey her ship's computer like some divine code until the endgame. It's nice to have a story, just don't do as Fusion did. I've encountered a few DMs who had a nice idea but were so focused & unflexible that they pissed off their players with their railroading.
>>
>>51487164
The railroading was one of the reasons Other M saddened me. You'd think that Fusion's backlash & Zero Mission returning to its former style would say a thing or two.
>>
>>51467781
So she lives off space hotpockets?
>>
>>51487210

>>

>>
>>51487615
I wonder if she's sad her golden space toaster got blown up during Fusion.
>>
>>51487164

Thing is, I love Fusion AND Zero Mission. But in different ways.

One is a very polished (and if you're going for a low% run fucking near impossible) linear platformer, the other is classic Nintendo exploration game like SM and Zelda where you pick up items that expand the area which you can explore until eventually you gain access to the final levels.

Then there's AM2R, which is the greatest Metroid game Nintendo ever Cease and Desisted.
>>
>>51472799
>>51472862
You guys might want to give this a look.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0rxPZbhuhQ8
>>
>>51488032
The problem is the linearity. When I think Metroid, I think Super Metroid & exploration. Discovering where to go next rather than be told where to go next. It has all the atmosphere of Metroid in the most un-Metroid linear style I could imagine. That Ridley scream was ear rape.

AM2R I was initially skeptical about due to how the original was. A remake of that game of all things? What impressed me was the new content. The new bosses, the new areas, that's damn good. They didn't just remake it, they added to it. If they only remade it with new graphics & shit, I'd have dropped it early on.

At least it's hard to screw the game up. The original was before Super Metroid standardized the style & at least had some exploration. It wasn't high budget thus there's no way they'd find a way to mutate the game into something else with unnecessary features like some remakes do unless the developer tried. It's great & simply going for & sticking to an updated remake altogether avoids many pitfalls.
>>
>>51488349
>That Ridley scream was ear rape.

That Nightmare tho

I think Fusion is a really good platformer. It's like comparing Rondo of Blood with Symphony of the Night, both are good platformers, but have completely different styles.
>>
>>51486689
Other M is bad Metroid fanfic made playable.
>>
>>51488551
It's more alike comparing the 3D Castlevania style to the rest. The older Castlevania style had been here & honed from the start & up to a point. The Metroidvania style was more alike how Super Metroid got popular & it became the norm.
>>
>>51488551
I don't want to think about how many times I've played it through. Metroid Fusion was the second game I ever played on my Gameboy Advanced. The SA-X scared the ever-living shit out of me as a kid.
>>
>>51492676

At this point it's literally a toss-up as to what I've spent more time on, Zero Mission or Fusion.

...that's kind of a damning indictment of how cack-handed I am on Zero Mission now that I look at it.

I always figured the Chozo gained some transcendent knowledge and either willingly faded due to some cosmic cycle bollocks or they let themselves die because that would let them ascend to another plane. Or something like that.
You mean they really did just fuck up so incredibly hard they ended up killing themselves? Disappointing, really.

>>
>>51497358
I figured it was a mixture of that and the Space Pirates wiping out their planet. IIRC, Zebes was the home planet that Samus grew up on and that was the Chozo's home, and while she was off bounty hunting the pirates showed up and gave them a nice, clean genocide.

Hence why Samus shows back up to both get paid and provide some righteous vengeance for her adopted peoples. Now THAT is how you bounty hunter, convincing people to pay you for doing something that just feels right.

That also explained to me why there was shit like chozo bartenders and dudes in robes in the game complete screens in later games - The race was just mostly killed off, with remainders who'd left the planet throughout the galaxy, but they'd lost their home planet and the rest were all working in the Cantinas and shit, dispensing wisdom on drunks and occasional adopted baby girls who come by once in a while.

The Chozo had lived so long that they're all old & can't reproduce anymore. They previously didn't care but it bit them when they found out no one could breed. Maybe that's why they injected their DNA inside a little girl. They gotta reproduce somehow.
>>
>>51497024
All the still-living Chozo are really old, and their physical and mental abilities are nowhere near what they used to be. So Samus's original suit was better than GF technology, but not incredibly so.

Then in Zero Mission that suit got destroyed and she got a more powerful one from an ancient "God of War", which she uses for most of the series.

In their base form, basest, gooiest form, these things are immune to projectiles, alongside many other things. That is to say fuck a duck you cannot put them down with weaponry that is on any and all levels below the ultimate manufactured predator in the galaxy. Infection abilities that put the Thing to shame and give it a raging erection in the same breath, also achieved through that nigh unkillable form mentioned earlier. Also, asexual reproduction. Fuck me. What's that? You've achieved the grossly difficult task of striving for half an hour? Congratulations! There's now two of you! All the bells and whistles attached!

>Samus's Walking Armory
Because fuck this space station.

>Samus's Intelligence
Samus designed her spaceship. That's fucking ridiculous. Moreover Samus is also a tactical genius and has exceptional quickness and deduction skills. Remember the Scan visor from the Prime games? That's not some magic-bird-science tech, that's Samus taking the random composition information the scan gives her and formulating her own thoughts and plan on par with Sherlock. Fuck's sake the mechanic even pauses the game while Samus thinks.

That's all stated, though, in game the SA-X is a dumb motherfucker.

My understanding was that while individual colonies were wiped out (and said colonies were the Chozo equivalent of hippies trying to be one with nature), what the fuck happened to the Chozo race on a whole is unknown but the two main (in universe) theories is that
A) It's always been known they're space faring nomads so they likely just fuck off outside of known space and will be back in a few millennia
or
B)It's known they FINISHED both science and magic and were working on philosophy to round out the hat trick, so they probably just finally finished it and with nothing left to do in this universe they ascended to a higher plane out of sheer boredom

>>51497807
In the comics there were only like two Chozo living there in Samus's lifetime, the pirates DID kill them, but they were old as fuck
>>
>>51499324

If they really FINISHED science and magic to the point where the only way to go further is to ascend to a higher plane, then I don't see how the galaxy can still be littered with their mistakes.

Eh, the X and Metroids were kind of self-solving problems if you look at it from the perspective of bird people that live as long as Chozo do. The Metroids were a super predator that had wiped out 90% of the indigenous species on SR388 in less than 20 years, so given a little more time the X would have gone extinct, followed by the Metroids once they ran out of food because apparently less than 40 Metroids can crash an ecosystem that fucking hard. It's something an Elf would do.
>It'll take less than a century, blink and you'll miss it

Shit only started to go south when the Federation decided to explore a barren rock with nothing on it, losing two exploration teams and a military escort in the process of capturing a single Metroid. Then the Space Pirates stole it, and that probably would have been the end of it had Mother Brain not been present to tell them that not just just any energy source works, only beta radiation does. Or lets them multiply, at any rate, because Metroids were actually designed to foil cloning attempts that didn't use that specific method.

As for Metroid Prime, that was more or less a splinter group of hippies encountering solidified Chaos that would have given the full Chozo a run for their money in similar circumstances. Not a whole lot else they could have done, since that specific group decided to abandon most of their tech.

>Why didn't the Chozo make some failsafe just in case

They did, and they call it Samus.

He means that it's using Ridley's pre-Super Metroid design. In the manual for the original Metroid, Ridley's art looked like whatever that thing in the image is, and Kraid was an orange dinosaur with green fur. Probably to match the tiny sprites.

It wasn't until Super Metroid that Kraid and Ridley's designs were solidified into what they are today, with Ridley being a dragon and Kraid a giant.

There WOULD be "those that didn't leave", which explains the dead ones in the games; Think of every old person that doesn't want to move out of a condemned house or away from shitass old village; there will always be people who go "fuck this. I live here until I die".

So most likely the race - as a whole - ascended, with the usual types to remain behind doing just so and finishing their lives out quietly.
>>
>>51504977
Every government system eventually reaches a size and scale where it has become too large for the civilization it's supposed to serve to keep it under control. At that point it begins to spin out of control, with individual departments breaking unity apart and increasingly treating anything not of their specific department as the enemy.

Take the FBI and CIA spying and blackmailing other .gov organizations, for example. Or Dukes and Earls starting to call themselves king. Or the Roman Senate in its falling days. Once the leadership of a civilization begins to break into compartmentalized subsystems, this is ever the result.

So what we see here is that the galactic federation has begun to enter that stage of its existence. Those in charge of military research give NO fucks anymore about ethics, morality, "those assholes that do science and thus aren't us" or anything else. "We can weaponize this, this is for us, it's ours, fuck anybody else". Meanwhile various watchdog organizations have probably also already fallen given the lack of response; in other words what should've been keeping these guys in check is now going "fuck this how's that our problem, they're not OUR people".

This means that most likely, were it not for the Zebes setback - metroids or no metroids - the Space Pirates were about to rise to prominence very fast. They may even still have a chance as things deteriorate further if they can recover the loss of their mother brain system.
>>
>>51518334
I always figured the lack of ethics was due to desperation, with all the fucked up biological weapons and eldritch horrors lying around the galaxy. Not everyone has a supercool awesomesuit that converts matter to energy and vice versa.
They don't give a shit about the consequences because they're scared as fuck the space pirates are gonna make metroid-guns FIRST and just start fucking everything up.
>>
>>51518504
Nah, the federation does its lack of ethics too... personally you could say? They're keeping things to themselves. Desperation would have the entire combined government working together and giving no fucks, but giving those no fucks together.

A good example of the desperation model is R-Type. One of the Space Corps major discoveries in that series was psychics. As in ESPers and whatnot (also black magic, believe it or not). The result? It was shared and blown open to the point where there are mass-produced starfighters (both government and private) specifically designed for use by them - the test-tube cockpit was designed to be snapped in and out so that any fighter coming in for re-arming also swaps its pilot for a fresh one; turns out forcefully amplifying your powers to a vehicular scale burns you out quite dangerously fast. This isn't just some black ops on one station: this is something the entire population knows and signs up for.

The Galactic Federation will eventually get desperate, but right now they're at the "assholes fucking each-other over" part of an empire's decline.

Samus had a bunch of upgrades in the beginning of Prime 2, but they weren't available to the player. Samus' suit doesn't enhance her physical strength, it gives her an environmental shield, weaponry, automatic data logging with her ship, etc.
While it adds many upgrades to her speed and jumpi capabilities, it doesn't actually enhance her physical strength, and since the suit is also space bird magic, at least the most basic form of it, it's controlled entirely by her mental efforts.
