It's to prevent Alpha Legion infiltration. The higher ups in the Imperium knew if they named a regiment that, Alpha Legion cells looking to infiltrate would just assume another cell beat them to it.

There's no reason Your Dudes can't be. All the codex talks about is how the Schola breaks down individual identity to hone the pupils' killer instincts and their dedication to the group and the mission, which is kind of what military training does today, to say nothing of special operations groups.

This is before Feanolfin the Banshee removes his betitted armour and reveals that half the Aspect Warriors are chiselled dudes that are just really big on the whole method acting thing.

Yes, that probably IS the best thing on /tg/ right now.

It would be...if anyone remembered what the plan was supposed to be.

So far plan is:
1. Pretend to turn to chaos

4.???
5. SAVE THE IMPERIUM!

>>
>>51429671
Agreed.

Though in the end you can do the YOUR DUDES thing and give them personalities and interesting lore.
>>
>>51427810
I mean you could mate. Just build a Scions army that works extensively with the Inquisition and OffiIcio Assassinorum for intelligence and counter-intelligence whose Schola is on a Russian-themed world, because a lot of the regimental fluff in the codex suggests they harbour very close relationhips with their training worlds. Schola students apparently adopt new names based on Imperial saints and stuff when they're kids, but you could compound the theme by naming them all after Vostroyan and Valhallan generals and heroes.

>t. unironically really likes the scions in all their tacticool cheese
>>
>>51430169
Heh.

Wouldn't be surprised if said world was one where Vostroyans and Valhallans liberated in the past, then settled down there because they did so well they earned it, and then there was a lot of events that caused them to create a regiment of Scions that are tougher than nails (both physically and mentally), are bros and make other regiments mistake their works for those of Khornates.

MANN NEDE!
>>
>>51430250
Yeah man. Scholas seem to be cut off from the world like monasteries, but the culture of the drill-abbots and the staff is probably imparted on the scholars in serious ways.

The wording of some of the fluff ("One Imperium, One Vision") in the Scions codex suggests that the Ecclesiarchy (and by extension its orphanage-schools) is one monolithic entity imposing a single orthodox view, but pretty much every other bit of lore we have suggests it's actually a conglomeration of sanctioned local cults that fall within certain criteria of praising the Emperor and encouraging obedience to authority. The Genestealer Cults novel goes into quite some detail about this, actually, because unsurprisingly the titular cult is the sanctioned Imperial sect the main characters are involved in

And there is nothing unorthodox or to be discouraged about a culture that encourages kids to grow up to be absolutemadmen.jpeg in the name of the Emperor.

Most of the books seem to suggest that we don't have the traditional spades, clubs, hearts and diamonds. Some of Abnett's stuff talks about an ace of spires or blades, and some other stuff seems to suggest that a dumbed-down version of the Emperor's Tarot is used in gambling.

Power to the people in this regard.

But on the other hand the Scions seem bland-ish compared to Stormtroopers from previous editions in gameplay terms (regimental doctrines and a expanded roster of units fit for a spec-ops organization).

They should give them more options, and when we're on it, give some more options to IG (as in doctrines for regiments).

They did it with Space Marines (Chapter Tactics), they did it with Chaos Space Marines (the Legions supplement made them badass again), so they should do the same with IG and Scions.

Slightly old canon specifically states that adults can be shoehorned through Schola training, usually at the behest of an Inquisitor looking to induct an acolyte into their stormtroopers. A particularly bold or enterprising schola progenium might well take on a number of such adult pupils, perhaps at the behest of an Inquisitor looking to put together a company of such veterans.

I mean, hell, scholas are specifically orphanages for orphans of Imperial servants, children can be admitted to them at any age, and most cohorts of Scions tend to be formed out of trainee groups of roughly equivalent age to foster a sense of belonging, so there's no reason your Scions couldn't be a a hodgepodge of former child soldiers raised in Imperial Guard regiments

Yeah, considering that portable and culturally significant games are the first thing to be propagandized, I'd expect an Emperor's tarot, with most card faces cartoonishly depicting the garish punishment and execution of heretic and dissenters; or a version with litanies and prayers on it.
>>

Maybe the reason the Imperial Infantryman's Uplifting Primer strictly prohibits gambling is because to do so with such cards might have blasphemous connotations by technicality?

Let's streamline the ideas a little bit, then.

>drill abbots and training personnel are drawn from a motley of vicious guard veterans from a variety of regiments the Inquisitor has served alongside, many of them nulls or blanks with a noted resistance to the ruinous powers
>various cultural quirks and eccentricities are picked up by osmosis from the drill instructors, but are occasionally cracked down upon hard if a pupil demonstrates too much individuality just to keep them on their toes
>them being psychic nulls intensifies the pupils' fear and disgust towards them
>the schola recruits from orphans of disgraced imperial servants, those convicted of heresy and occasionally outright rescues (where they can be salvaged)

Indeed. The standard firing posotion of SM has them actually showing their shoulder first, for two reasons.
PAULDRONS means they have a reactive shield to protect them from incoming fire, but also becausea bolter is so damn big, they'd have trouble holding it with their two hands in front of them, and not on the side.

You can probably find examples of the contrary, but marine firing in front of their legs and not on the side are often firing one handed.

I'm actually putting together a scion army right now that's directly inspired by clone commandos. Thinking they get their weird pseudo-mandalorian influences from feral worlder drill abbots instilling a warrior culture into them.

Going for a stark white colour scheme doesn't really jive with the tacticool elements of them, as much as I really want to do it. Thinking of going gunmetal grey. Either way, I'm really looking forward to customising and individualising each trooper in the squads.

I know the Emperor's Tarot is a psychoactive card deck, and it is mentioned that it's also used as a game deck by non-psykers. It's possible psychic versions are kept in the hands of Space Marines, Inquisitors, and any loyalists with a strong psychic tradition and the need to divine some information.

And there's probably basic paper versions that are printed by the million that can be found in an Imperial Guardsman's kit for morale purposes, to the table of a pleasure world's casino, to the pocket of any bored underhive ganger. Of course, those that might have a mystic or shamanistic tradition might still pull the occasional prophecy from an ordinary pack of cards, since, to the warp, form sometimes follows function, and even a deck of cards can become imbued with their ritualistic use.

>>
>>51439868
The notion of them cutting a marines balls off doesn't make sense to me, they're armoured slabs of testosterone and there's very little else implanted in a marine that could possibly produce the stuff other than their balls.

Sexual urges aren't likely to be an issue with all the mental conditioning they go through. There's a quote out there from a German prison guard that goes something along the lines of "we knew the spirits of the PoWs was broken when they stopped masturbating"; That right there sounds akin to what a marine would go through in training, only to be rebuilt as a single minded weapon.

No, GW is just retarded.
>>
>>51440447
>first regiment raised

Lucky Aces might be 9,000 years old for all you know.
>>
>>51440458
You know, being in the military mean you spent a lot of time waiting around killing time.
So dice and cards are probably one of the cornerstones of troop morale and sanity during warp voyages.
Don't think it's much of stretch that these things will still be around in 38k years, if humanity is still around then.

In any case - you might have missed it - I circled the playing card on the soldier himself.
Unless you wanna argue that is a 9000 year old picture too, which would be not really helpful in building inspiration for a 40k Jerumael army, which is the reason that was in the IG codex.

It's not like there aren't bigger inconsistencies in 40k...
>>
>>51440447
Their regiment was named the Aces, and they earned the "Lucky" nickname after a string of absurdly lucky events while on campaign.

They didn't name their regiment after one trooper's breach of uniform regulations.
>>
>>51440484

that card could be an ace of diamonds you dont know

just cause the regiment is named aces

its schrodingers suit until the card is fully pulled out
>>
>>51440499
>They didn't name their regiment after one trooper's breach of uniform regulations.
First of all, that logic is completely backwards and showcasing a guy that isn't exemplary for the regiment would defeat the point of showcasing him in the first place.

Seriously, GW does this stuff all the time, I don't get why you are trying so hard to bend over backwards to justify it.
>>
>>51440598
We as outside observers know the ace of spades is lucky, but that's separate from the information being presented to us from the universe itself.

There's no bending over backwards when they straight up say why they're called lucky aces in the accompanying text.
>>
>>51440629
It kind of is when you insist that they don't know the meaning of the playing card when the soldier in the picture is wearing one in his headband.
>>
>>51440653
They don't know the meaning/origin of the SYMBOL. Shit, not many people now know what the spade represents or where it came from.
>>
>>51440665
If you are trying to argue that the ace of spade is a common thing on the playing card and the whole stick about 'nobody knows the meaning of the symbol' only refers to the origins of the shape and not the use on a playing card, that's more or less just a semantic distinction, that seems pointlessly convoluted given the context it is mentioned in.

If that is not what you mean then I still think it's pretty stupid and a weird thing to get so worked up about.

Jesus Christ this guy must be the best Banshee ever, maybe the best Eldar ever. Fucking Feanor AND Fingolfin in one person?

Of course cards are still around, it's the symbols that would have changed; they probably vary from world to world.
That could be a ace of spades, an ace of of Sanguinius' tears or any amount of things.
>>
>>51432864
It isn't.
As far as we know, the Banshee's are Khaine's onlky female aspect, so any females going into the other branches have to squeeze their boobs into regular armour.
Then again, eldar are pretty flat to begin with.
>>

You'll notice that they're a bit different than human. That can mean downright better.
>>
>>51446861

>>
>>51449186
Xenology isn't FFG.

It is however contradicted a lot of material that came both before and after it. Eldar get a lot of different portrayals, but none of them line up with Xenology.

>>
>>51445307
The joke is that Ephrael Stern is a) really human and b) indistinguishable from an Eldar female with her face covered when otherwise basically naked. When being stared at by other Eldar, up close.

Human women and Elder women can totally visually overlap in the grim future of the far future, at least externally.
>>
>>51450183
Yeah, but she's basically made of condensed handwaving and plot armor, so I don't think she's very representative of the average human.
>>
>>51450727
And yet she still looks human enough for SoBs and Inquisitors and Marines to never once make comment on how unusual her appearance is, nor is she particularly distinguishable from her fellow Sororitas.

(She's actually somewhat shorter and less stocky than a fair few of them in Daemonifuge)

Maybe she isn't representative of the absolute tip of the bell curve, but it's a big Imperium, and there are a lot of Eldar.
>>
>>51440706

I was more commenting on the fact that she can just do whatever the plot requires at that particular moment. If she needs to pass for Eldar, she can do that even if she doesn't actually look like one. If she needs to be able to blow up a Culexus assassin by overloading it with psychic energy, she can do that even if Culexus assassins don't actually work that way.

I built a multi-planet system which joined the Imperium willingly during the Grand Crusade. The Emperor dashed off a friendly memo thanking them and impressed by their multi-division combined arms formations, and that sacred relic became their justification for being exempt from the usual Imperial rules on the subject.

Basically instead of Regiments, the armies from the Rodinian System are combined arms formations that follow the TO&E of the Red Army during the Cold War. That includes spetznaz units, which of course are stormies.

It really only works in Epic Armageddon play, because they permit the use of large mechanized formations but I suppose you could do it in 40k as well.
