First of all, it's lingua franca. Second, it's lingua franca of western world, and not even close to being universal. Useful, sure, but definitely not a sure-fire. Third, there is not a single language that can claim being lingua franca of the world, because no language is widespread or popular enough to guarantee efficient communication world-wide.

It's not just pure numbers who speak it as a first language though, it's also how those people are distributed.

Mandarin has a huge number of people speaking it, but they're also concentrated primarily to a single continent- A fucking huge area, but not global.

English, while having less people speaking it as a first language, is fucking everywhere, and is a very common second language. It's something I see quite a lot in Europe. If a Pole wants to speak to a Frenchman, they'll often do so in English.

Son, Chinese language is not some sort bizzare family of unrelated languages. Assuming we only take into account continental version and skip Taiwan (it has more to do with written version than anything else), it's perfectly possible to communicate with "Mandarin" all over China, aside few fringe areas, like Xinjiang. One of the goals of the Communist Party of China, like every communist party in the world, was education of the masses, because it's easier to adress propaganda to people who can read it. That means education spread all over the country, with the goal of making the language accessable to everyone. For the same reason simplified characters were invented, as they (theoretically) make Chinese written language easier to handle.
But back to the talked version - when you have centralised, standarised and monitored education that does nothing else but burry the divisions between people within a single country AND actively prosecute other languages than the "main" one and a situation like that going for few GENERATIONS, you end up with a country when only old and rural and/or well-isolated areas are not using the same language.
Besides, skipping all this - the difference of "Mandarin" and "Cantonese" is almost entirely based on accent. But in the core it's the same fucking language. To put that into perspective - we are comparing drunken Glaswegian with Afrikaner speaking English and judged by bunch of English-speaking Russians.

You've had contact with students. Doesn't matter what language we are talking about or what country they were from. They were students. That by default means you had contact with highly educated people who had enough knowledge and language skills to attend foreign university. You can't just assume they are random, representative group of people showing how things work back home. It just means people with enough qualification to attend that university.
Technically speaking, I could tell you, using your logic, that Polish is lingua franca. After all, exchange students attending classes in internation Jagiellonian University are obligated to take certain classes in Polish, and it's their problem if they don't understand. So by your trail of logic, since all the foreigners attending had at least basic grasp of Polish, that means everyone in their home countries understands it too and surely, it will be possible to talk with locals using it.
