Semi-new to 30K and working on converting a Kurtha Sedd into a Death Guard praetor. Already got a scythe to replace the crozius. Trying to decide on the other arm. Keeping the plasma pistol seems silly. Maybe just give him a bolter since the scythe is two-handed anyway.

Things I'm unsure about:

Worth taking only a single multi-melta on the speeders instead of grav-guns? They are Master-Crafted, but it still seems too janky to try.

10x melta marines--too expensive? Is 5 alone okay?

Caestus--worth it? Or should I drop the speeders entirely for a Storm Eagle and take something else in Heavy Support?

This would be going next to a Solar Auxilia list with 1-2 lasrifle blobs & quad mortars on quad-gun aegis lines, as well as tanks and Veletarii.

Imperial Fists: I need help on fitting their fluff to their crunch for a list. The gist of it is I want to basically build a Fortress and force my opponent to deal with it or get rekt. I'm thinking Artillery out the ass and plenty of interceptor to keep deep strikers out. Oh, and tons of bolter boys for that sweet +1 BS.

Take 3x Forgelords+Servitors and 3x20 Bolter boys with apothecaries plus whatever support you want, then the rest of the points go into an Aquila Strongpoint with Void Shields and as many Void Shield Generators as you can. You misunderstand. The Shattered Legions WOULD be the Allied Detachment.

Rules-wise I wanted something to go from 2k to 3k points that featured some Legion toys.

Fluff-wise, they'd be Salamanders Blackshields that were mutated as the Salamanders tried to bring their numbers up really quickly after getting murderzoned early on. Exiled for their deformity, they eventually die out in the Heresy/Scouring but their geneseed would end up becoming the Black Dragons in 40k.

There'd still be some "pure," successful Salamanders (like the Praetor)

I considered Chymarie Blackshields. But Option 1 (+1S, +1T, -1" Run and Charge, no sweeping) didn't fit with their character as fast assault/bone claw dudes.

Option 2 (+1 WS +1 BS -2Ld) was closer but constant -2 Ld really hurts and it also doesn't fit well with "stoic guys who are hated by the people they protect."

Option 3 (Fear, Fleet, Rage, -1BS) is probably closest to what I had in mind, but it also means the WHOLE group were gene-failures.

Furthermore, can't take epic Salamanders praetor or RoWs, and I'd miss out on units that just seem fun to play (horde of WS Land Speeders).

Also, even though I'm DG, my favourite chapter in 40k are the Blood Ravens, and I liked it a lot when they appeared in Space Marine.

Psykers are always a force multiplier, and in fact I believe that if the Emperor had used Biomancy blessings on Mortarion to enact retribution on his father rather than on Himself to steal his glory, then Fourteen would have had a completely opposite opinion to librarians than his regular self.

And had Mortarion and Magnus been friends, well, I doubt the later could have schooled the former enough to avoid his nurgly fate, but at least they would have been damned together, rather than alone.

This reminds me of one of my first D&D characters. I was playing a pretty strong Fighter who had some ridiculously lucky stat rolls. Later on, we were joking about commoners, and I'd asked how much gold a farmer makes in a year. Our DM had said around 1-10 pieces, so I went "Screw adventuring, I'm gonna go start a farm." Long time Scoria abuser here, you have the core right, put him with the Castellax or vorax, easy peasy. You need some other anti tank other than 2 darkfires though. Cyber lists are very hard to balance under 2k because of the high tax of 2 castellax squads. BUT this will all depend on your local meta. If you are facing mostly footslogging BAC and Prospero box armies it will rape things. Don't forget to cast Right of the beast just before an assault.

Simple really, GW plastic cost nearly as much as Forgeworld stuff down there (because FW simply charges in pounds, rather than converting to AUS$ at a huge mark-up), so if you want an army, why not go for an all Forgeworld one, it's just as expensive as plastic and it looks cooler.

Funny thought, Forgelord with rad grenades with a veteran bodyguard equipped with power maces? Making the enemy T 3 and having S 6 themselves should Insta kill a lot, if one rolls correctly of course. Would it be a viable/fun way of using a forge lord?

Just discovered the Spire of Dawn box, which is £40 online for 40 Clanrats for Levies, a couple HQs to make into levy Sarges or rogue psykers or something and two Rat Ogres I can make into Biologis Vorax or something easily enough. That's a lot of stuff, plus a whole bunch of"Aelves" I can probably eBay.

Mix in a Ghoul box or two, the Gants and a few Skitarii spares and I could have all the levies soonish. That will help considerably.

I think one of the guys on the Sons of Heresy podcast managed to get good use out of Domitars. Not sure of the details.

Crappy units do eventually get improved, but the schedule depends on whether FW immediately follows GW into 8th edition or not. We have no way of knowing. If they do, then everything gets reset relatively soon. If they stick with 7th, they’ll issue their own HH-only FAQ but probably not touch the red books until 2018. They’d probably be rewritten after Angelus.

Domitars got one, it's called the Arlatax. Really they need to knock about 30 pts off it and give it I4 and WS5, just so it's more competent than a kitted Castellax.

Calix just needs a bigger gun. Make it Ordnance 2 or 3, and possibly give it something along the lines of ExoShock, since it's inferior in pretty much all situations to a Deredo, a regular Thanatar, a couple Darkfire Castellax or a single Krios Venator. It should have a job of locking down Superheavy guns like the SicV.

So is a mixed Mechanicum force viable? I know the optimal approach is to focus on the Robots of artillery, but I wanted to do a Reductor primary, with an Archimandrite, a Magos Reductor and a Dominus as Hqs, and add in a Vorax or Castellax unit to my Reductor, as well as maybe a Thanatar. Allied Detachment will be Milita and Cults for the"100 Levies Rending and Zealot" tactic. Plus two Thallax cohorts should be plenty of scoring. Add in a Medusa or two, a Vulturax, a Krios Venator and a squad of Myrmidons and a Transport, and probably a squad of Enginseers or something to stick the Reductor Magos in, and that's pretty neatly 3k. Would that be viable for non-cheese games?

I think axe-man's the least convincing, since he seems to have pretty pure MkVII armour. Helmet dude's ok, he's in MkIII (and now I want him as a sergeant for my MkIII squad). bolter and hammer dudes have MkVI, so they're ok as well. Axe dude has a MkVII suit, so he's the least qualified. Unless you can alter his suit to be more like a MkV.

Also, helmet and axe dudes have cruxes on their shoulders, which might need some filing.

I forgot SoH had those torsos. I wonder what one would look like on a Rubric Marine with the eye painted as glowing with energy and being sort of the "heart" of the suit while the actual helmet was empty and lifeless.

Black primer -> Lupercal Green -> zenithal Sons of Horus green -> nuln oil gloss > Sybarite Green highlights. I tried a couple other approaches but I didn't like them very much. I wanted to make Sotek Green over white primer work because it's a great colour but I struggled to get it working beyond the base.

Not an IW player but I'd say they ARE the shootiest. IF are durable; IW have shootier special units and shootier rites of war.

They're also easy to paint and footslogging armies are popular because they're cheaper to build. And they can be used as loyalists without too much trouble (hopefully not by calling them Imperial Fists...).

I'm the poncy editor anon who was moaning about the poor literary appreciation of the community podcasts, I'm not really up for a /hhg/ podcast, but was considering making super short clips running down the literary refs, inspiration meanings etc of random particular things. Something about the idea of doomed units staying loyal when their peers all turn against the Emperor really appeals to me, and it would be nice to use one of the actual loyalist characters as my HQ.
