Thought experiment, how would you try to fix weaker codexes and units if the only thing you are able to adjust are points costs (of anything, including the base cost per model, the cost of options, and the cost of gear/relics)

What are you working on /tg/? Got any games planned? Played any games recently?

And to perhaps generate some constructive discussion, in opposition to that abomination of a previous thread: what do you want for you're armies (not faction, army) Primarch equivalent, and what would you like to see your army do in the "gathering storm"?
>>
>>51385609
Who here uses terrain and fortifications in their games?

If you do use them, what do you use?

I personally use two Imperial Bunkers, a Firestorm Redoubt, two Defense Emplacements, two sets of Walls, and a Vengeance Battery, in varying combinations depending on the game. It makes my Chaos Marines significantly harder to kill, especially when you place Havocs in the forts with Autocannons and use the lines to bolster Noise Marines.

Price everything in the Tau and Eldar codexes reasonably for their effectiveness. Decrease the cost on the effective units in weaker codexes. Stop giving people free units and models for formations. Etc etc etc.

Ork player here, best I ever went against Deldar was when I blew up about 80% of the dudes transports first turn, the rest of my shooting proceeded to do almost nothing for the entire game, even his succubus tied up my warboss because of that melee invuln shit and I know succubus are one of the worst hq choices for them.

His basic infantry destroyed my boyz at range and then in combat, his incubus destroyed my meganobs as well as his succubus.

It's not that Orks are worse than everything, it's just that the people writing the codex forgot they were BS2 and I2

Succubi actually aren't bad, its just that Deldar are usually a bad choice to play close combat wise so they don't get a lot of play.

That's rough though. I've gone up against some mean Ork lists in my time, but almost all of them had a juicy center of bikes that are hard for the Deldar to ignore.

If you play Dark Eldar right against low tier armies, a good player can have an answer for most everything that isn't bullshit, and given how your tranports went up in smoke I'd wager it was a bad way for your dudes.

Daemon gives Fear, Deep Strike, and a 5++.

Khorne Daemonkin Maulerfiends have Daemon of Khorne, which gives the afore-mentioned stuff as well as Furious Charge and Hatred (Slaanesh) for about 20 extra points, iirc.

This does nothing for them because Maulerfiends have 2 power fists and are S6 base.

I waited a year after I decided I totally didn't like them, the army count is just so retardedly small no matter what since each unit is a psyker with a power sword, they're just gonna be done like thousand sons when they do get updates

I'm gonna keep a the codex, a squad of termies, a dreadknight, and draigo just in case they just become amazing in 8th

But right now I would just prefer to have an army I actually find joy in playing instead of waiting and hoping as they collect dust on my shelf
>>
>>51385792
Former 'Nid player here. Nids never recovered from the gutting that they received with the 5th ed codex. The 4e 'Nid dex is objectively one of the best and most balanced codices ever written. Having 1 viable list and 1 cheese list does not a fun army make. Not sure where they're at right now because I stopped paying attention in early 6e to spare myself the heart-ache.

GKs were shit when I started them, but I played them anyways, despite loosing 90% of all games I plays, I just really didn't enjoy having like 5 units on the board and being way more limited in options than almost every army out there, they are just so inefficient and rely on one or two dice rolls to decide the game

The problem with Tau is not that Tau is actually a stronger codex than Eldar, Marines, or Daemons.

The problem with Tau is that it's very, very, very easy to build a very strong casual-stomping without trying very hard. All Eldar lists are strong, but in order to go fucking insane with Eldar you need to do a very specific build. The same thing is true with Marines and Daemons.

With Tau all you have to do is buy like three fucking units (often considered the "cool units" of the codex) and bam, you're smashing shit left right and center, so there are a lot more of these Tau players stomping a lot more faces who claim they did nothing wrong.

Dude I'm starting to suspect you have never played with or against GKs

All this assuming to try and make yourself feel smart like you're two steps ahead of everyone is just making you sound ignorant

I ran draigo exactly 2 times in a list under 2000 points, I never used palidens more than a couple times either because the ability for a deathstar is just nonexistent

GKs are just crazy expensive, and you have to spam the 3-4 viable units over and over

My Lists looked like this

1-2 Lvl 3 librarians
2-4 squads of purifiers in rhinos (who just got nerfed btw from the FAQ)
2-4dreadknights
1-2 squad of termies

Sometimes I would throw in a storm raven or something but really everything is too expensive and using the same units over and over left some massive weaknesses in your army that couldn't be filled

Victoria Minis are fairly good; if pricy. They are truscale rather than heroic, and thus are a touch slighter than plastic Cadians, but it's mostly noticable if you try and mix them in a squad. On their own, they tend to be OK. Their Not!Cadians and Not!Modrians are great, the others look good but I don't actually own any, so can't speak to personal experience.

Raging Heroes' Toughest Girls in the Galaxy line are very nice too, a bit more cheesecake and a bit pricier. Scale-wise they are, like Victoria, a tiny bit smaller but at the usual distance for play it's not too noticeable.

Chapterhouse has a lady-guard squad set; the detail isn't as good as Victoria or Raging Heroes IMO but the scale is a touch closer to GW.

If you just want heads, Statuesque Miniatures has a variety of lady-heads in multiple styles. The Pulp and Heroic scale heads both work excellently with GW bodies.

Yeah, we do. But that guy asked about Baneblades, not its variants.

The Shadowsword is shit for its points. Its gun is great, but not with one shot at BS3. I'd rather take a Macro-cannon Aquila Strongpoint, or better yet Vortex silo. Also, the Eldar Lynx exists.

Stormlord is decent because it's a transport and firing platform, and can shoot twice.

Stormsword has a cheese gun and is usually banned.

The Stormblade is the most legit variant. Not worthless but not broken either. I forget how many points it costs though.

but anyways, you know how that ultramarine pask dude can get out of his tank after it blows up? In 3e all imperial vehicles could buy an upgrade to do that. If they survived the game, the opponent wouldn't get any victory points for blowing up the tank, which was huge.

In 2e every vehicle, period, had crew sizes and if not directly killed they could survive, escape, and potentially crew other vehicles that had crew members killed (because some of the damage results would kill a tank gunner/driver/commander).

It is still cheap but a 50 point increase basically means not being able to take a unit of scat bikes with him (51 points base, 81 points for a decked out squad) which actually matters. It generally makes him closer in cost to knights which he is the equivalent of.

>>51387236

Probably not necessary, that puts it at 500 points which is past Knights and similar other LoW. It probably needs to sit at, base, about 350.

>ranged D vs no ranged D (I have no argument for this)
>higher initiative mastercrafted D sword but no ranged weapon with a 5++ in CC vs Dsword with no invuln but harder to hurt in CC because armour 13
>raped by grav vs molested on a subway by grav (very important for current tourney meta)
>died vs explodes (which is better depends on if it dies in your gunline or theirs)

There's a couple more that I can't remember right now, but I'd say wraith knight is more frail but hits harder, while the knight is harder to kill but doesn't rape as much ass imagine if it was Pokémon the wraithknight is darmanitan and the knight is metagross

While we're on the subject of points.

Why doesn't GW just adjust points costs as the game goes on?

There's no need to re-balance all the rules in the codexes when you could literally just increase/decrease the points cost of strong/weak units.

You could still sell people codexes for the rules alone and have a separate app, army builder, or website for points costs.
>>
>>51387510
Deathwatch RPG is alright. It was written before the 7th edition Deathwatch releases and portrays the faction well. The new codex literally changed all of that, and was a terribly-written book to book.

I'd start with a core of Lord, Chosen, 2x CSM, Bikes, Havocs, and a Spawn yes. Particualrly for 1000 pts. that should still leave you a few points to customize here and there.

Mindveil is a really strong choice for a AL Lord and helps him catch up to his infiltrators and then lets them do serious work with hit and run tricks. Sigil of Corruption, Lightning Claw, Power Fist is the standard fighty Chaos Lord. But I could see just going something like Mindveil/Viper's Bite/Sigil if you're tight on points. Maybe with a power Axe for emergencies. I could be wrong about the exact optimal CL build though.

IMO, the ideal would be for the Codices/BRB to be available for digital access, you purchase the BRB once and each Codex once,.
Then GW and their imaginary playtest/balance team would update and adjust costs and units periodically, like the way online vidya games are balanced.

Guard with sometimes Inquisition allies.

I really like a mix of units for the Guard. My favorite lists to play involve a variety of units and a variety of shooting, psychic powers, mobility and close combat. My favorite kind of games involve every phase and involve a lot of moving towards each other. It feels like an escalation of events ending in beating each other to death. I also love how Psychic Powers and Orders synergize with each other. I like the risk and I like the reward.

My least favorite games are the ones where we just sit there shooting each other and don't really move. And also I hate games where I just wait for the enemy to come as I shoot them to pieces. I want to challenge their deathstar with a Guard blob or Bullgryn beat down squad.

Would this list /w weapon choices altered be OK for Kill Team games?

I'm kinda noob here, coming after a long pause back to the game.

I'm kind of thinking of giving up my eldar.
haven't played them in months, haven't painted an non-harlequin eldar model for half a year now.

the harlequins are so much more interesting, the only thing keeping me from selling them is the rumours of the new models and the fact that i have a recast phantom titan painted up for them and i would not like to sell that....
