Tricky little bastards that look down on non-dragonoid races like humans and elves, but look up to dragonborn, halfdragons, and dragons.

They get by in combat on cleverness and numbers, preferring to ambush or defend fortified positions rather than push forward. When they do, they do so in formations with either long spears or mounts to make up for their short stature.

They tend to not form nations of their own, but tribes exist and they are frequently recruited into dragon cults, absorbed by dragonborn nations, and enslaved by dragons. When part of such piecemeal forces they normally take the role of combat engineers, sappers, skirmishers, and spies.

On the personal level they tend to be egotistical and cruel.

Kobolds tend to inhabit caves and grottoes, living in large extended families. They are best known for being ridiculously inept at everything, any endeavour they attempt is doomed to fail in a spectacular fashion. They're so clumsy, absent-minded and just plain unlucky that they can't do anything at all right, always messing up in one way or another. Usually they can't even pick their nose without breaking something or causing a long and excessively destructive chain reaction. Although they experience lots of injuries due to their bad luck, they are nearly impervious to pain and recover very quickly from wounds that would be deadly to any other race.

In spite of such epic misfortune, kobolds somehow manage to thrive and even pose a serious threat to the people of their region. The little reptiles themselves seem to be completely unaware of how incredibly incompetent they are and hold themselves in a very high regard, even considering themselves the ultimate master race and all other races merely subhumans created to serve them. Practically every tiny kobold hamlet has an elaborate plan of conquest and world domination. Of course, all these plans fail in a spectacular fashion, both because they're ridiculously stupid and because kobolds can't do anything right. Likewise, every single kobold considers himself to be the pinnacle of the magnificent kobold race and blames all of his troubles and failings on "enviers" and "nincompoop underlings".

Kobold weapons have the distinction of being the only weapons in the world more likely to injure their wielder than anyone else, only the kobolds themselves can wield them with any degree of efficiency. Their cuisine is something special, it's always either half-baked or burned, with lots of feathers and fish scales stuck in there, horribly oversalted and more often than not still quite a bit alive and moving.

This might sound strange, but I've spent every day for over a couple months thinking about Kobolds a few years back.

I was working on creating a nation of kobolds as a mod for a game, so I had to come up with a lot of unit types, an artistic style, unique spells and magic, their religious beliefs, and a general backstory to tie it all together.

To be brief, kobolds are incredibly weak and frail and relatively small and cowardly creatures who at first glance seem terribly unsuited to survival in comparison to any other species. They make up for it with incredible numbers, cunning, natural stealth, and an exceptional ability for teamwork. Most typically use a crossbow (which they're unable to reload themselves due to their low strength), and some will fight with a shortspear and a shield. They love to use poison (on their shortspears as well as crossbow bolts), traps, ambushes, as well as decent tactics once a warren gets large enough. Magical ability is extremely rare, but typically includes fire, earth, and death. Kobold scouts always operate in pairs.

Kobolds multiply quickly due to their ability to consume almost anything as food, their lengthy fertile period, large numbers of eggs hatched at a time in the warren, and their fast maturity and can quickly overrun areas and wipe out everything edible.

Kobold religious beliefs include sharing an oversoul for the entire warren, and eating their dead as a way to perpetuate and pass on the oversoul to their hatchlings. They believe that consuming magicians is the surest way to improve the magical ability of the next generation of kobolds.

While other species would call kobolds evil or even malicious, it would be more accurate to say that they simply lack the capacity for morals that other races have, and that anything that isn't a kobold is either a potential threat or a potential source of food.

They form the lowest caste before slaves and non dragonics within the great dragon empire. The dragonborn are the human sized servants of the dragons, farmers, merchants, inventors, and your average person, whereas kobolds are the small folk who do the mining, the metal work and creation of mechanical devices too small or delicate for dragonborn hands and other tasks more suited for small dragony people. They use the bulk that dragonborn bring in fights as cover and vantage points for their guns.

In regards to stats, I keep them the same as their PF variety since it really captures for me the essence of kobold I like.

Pic related (not my art, but I stole the race from the subject game) dwell in burrows, mines, and other damp dark places. They can literally sniff out metal and tend to wean more out of abandoned shafts than the abandoners would have liked to admit, and often make their home in such places, haphazardly expanding them. They have a knack for crude and awful looking but functional metalworks, as well as innate understanding of arcane magic that generally has them learn far too quickly to control. In a year, the elvish magic students learned the first chapter of a ballad meant to teach the philosophy of destruction. A third of the human college was injured, but most have a decent grasp on flame magic now. The nearby kobold den spying and filching their work exploded, but the new one that has taken up nearby has a dangerous affinity for flame-launchers and immolation. Their craftiness is often put to work creating weapons and traps to defend their burrows, since their inevitable raiding and generally gross disposition is a major putoff for the others they mooch from. These slitted goggles are a common tool to compensate for their light sensitive eyes, and the glowing is in fact the reflection of them. One of their largest civilizations is a relatively peaceful but still damned weasely sort that lives in a great desert, using their metal searching and working skills to sniff out old scraps in the sand and put them in close enough to working order to trade. They wear rags soaked in damp solutions and scurry about below the notice of predators, avoiding trouble where they can. This faction is due to a player wanting to play a jawa.
The other breed of kobolds is the modern draconic standard, due to a branch off in an ancient conflict where some of the buggers sold themselves to dragons for protection, drank of their blood, and shed their mamalian features for reptilian.

I tend to be very liberal with how monster races interact and behave in the world. In more civilized areas, especially for Goblins and Kobolds, they are basically high fantasy Mexicans. Used for random labor, chores and jobs that most others can't be bothered with. The kobolds tend to be more crafty and know how to reuse and re-purpose damn near anything, whereas the goblins are better at general procurement.

There is a port city in my setting that gave these groups control of an old aquaduct system that has basically been turned into a mismash of goblin and kobold engineering. It's not uncommon to see the two races hanging around with and cooperating with each other.

Outside of these more progressive places though, they're treated as tribals at the best of times, with skepticism and tolerance until provoked. The two groups often fight over resources, though sometimes they are both press ganged into picking old mines clean by dwarves or cleaning up the forest by elves. Usually humans just chase them off because they don't want the ugly bastards scaring their children. Orcs, Half-Giant/Goliaths and other more savage races will openly enslave these smaller races to work around their areas and be meatshields (See. Grot). Dragons will normally kill goblins on sight and kobolds will often time take to worshiping them... It's a wide spanning dynamic in my setting. Just depends on the circumstances.

I think you can pull off a nice middle-ground between those two too.
Not necessarily always evil or irredeemably racist but cowardly and paranoid to the point of xenophobia because they're near the bottom of the monster food chain and if anything more dangerous than housecat gets past their traps it might kill all the vulnerable members of the tribe.

Kobolds in my DM's industrial revolutiom homebrew are mostly wrestling with the implications of what the industrial revolution means for them and how the two factions of kobolds want to go from here on out.

Firearms have recently become widespread, making magic(al) creatures much less overbearing compared to the common folk in power and the The industrial revolution is in full swing.


There is currently a growing cultural divide between the kobolds that are adopting life in industrial cities and integrting themselves vs the dragon worshippering warren kobolds everywhere else.

The kobolds who are living within cities tend to work as chimney sweeps, and other the like, the ultimate goal that kobolds generally strive towards is to enroll themselves into crafter guilds. the rank of master craftsmen is generally the highest social rank that a kobold can reach in society, to hone one's skill at watchmaking or sword smiting is seen as the reaching the pinnacle. Kobolds get a strong sense of racial pride based on their history.

How they have escaped slavery from dragons and have fought their way tooth and claw up from the bottom and are actually becoming parts of a better society.

Honestly, gunpowder already exists in most fantasy settings that have been around long enough for someone to whine that they want to play a gunslinger.

My 5e kobold is going to invent the steam engine. In fact, he already did. But everyone was all "Oh, scalding death" this, and "Waaa exploding without warning" that, and "infernal racket and steam valves at exactly head height" the other. After he got a little too physical with the latest individual to misunderstand his genius, (which isn't very dangerous from an 8 strength kobold, unless he's wielding a forge hammer at the moment) the guild kicked him out. (And he can't carry all that shit, so he has to start almost from scratch.)

His rival is a dragonborn artificer[gunsmith] who instead of making inventions to make UP for being tiny and physically impotent, makes inventions that take advantage of it.

Actually thank you. The setting I was working on has monster-races in it, and I wasn't sure if I should differentiate between Lizard-people and Kobolds. Easy choice. Just have lizard-folk, and just allow for short-stacks.

Combat is done through sex. Yes I am that kind of degenerate.

One of them is a perspective character in the book I'm uploading to 1d4chan in a few days.

She's a defective prototype, out for vengeance after Asmodeus kicked her in the stomach and defenestrated her.

Naturally about 1 in 10 of births are female. Females also tend to be slightly larger and somewhat more intelligent (and probably live longer), and thus dominate the warrens. This is not widely appreciated by other species due to the fact that females very rarely leave the warrens. Kobolds have a persistent and universal, continent-spanning belief that they and dragons are the same species, and that once in a very great while a dragon will be born within a warren. This is very much not true. The fact that no kobold alive has ever seen this happen does not change their views and most established warrens have legends about 'their dragon(s)'.

This belief, coupled with their belief in the oversoul and in eating wizards for power, explains their eagerness to serve and worship dragons - by welcoming them into the family they can incalculably strengthen their oversoul when the dragon dies, and increase their chances of having other dragons born to their warren. This is severly not the case.

Other species have heard this boast from kobolds and taken it to be true. Kobolds are killed to prevent dragon attacks.

Kobolds are divided into two different kinds, Urds (Winged Kobolds) created by the dragon god and Demiurds (Wingless Kobolds) created by a group of evil Dragons to serve them.
Urds are different from how Kobolds are normally depicted in a few different ways. They don't like living underground, as they love flying and do it as much as possible, they're respected by other races, for their status as creation of the dragon god and their combat abilities, and their powerful fighters. Instead of tribes, they form bloodlines that are similar to knightly orders that go round and make sure others follow the will of the dragon god and protect holy sites. On the downside, they're headstrong and not as smart as cunning as the Demiurds, as well as being prone to being manipulated.
Demiurds see their winged cousins as self-righteous pricks, and thus live underground merely to spite them. They also pride themselves on their quick wit and ingenuity, with Demiurds competing to outsmart each other in areas like trap making, metal work and mining. They live in tribes ruled by the Demiurd who has managed to gather the most wealth, which is seen as sacred and a sign of intelligence. As such, tribes are easily bribed by promises of vast riches.

Kinda, but not really.
Earliest (productive) steam engines were primarily pumps. Good for mining, when you're digging down beneath the water table, or just deep enough that all that rain flows downhill. Steam engines required things like them being small enough to be able to transport themselves and their fuel.

Kobold is A, not as regimented or learned as the engineer from Raising Steam, and B, not making tracks; he's more interested in things like pumps and steam hammers, things that kobolds already have to deal with, but suck at, due to being little thirty pound Str 8 motherfuckers.

Not that trains wouldn't be helpful either, but honestly, it's not like kobolds have anywhere to GO.

Guns are actually a pretty great compliment to kobold warrens since they can have lots of tight passages and traps where they can just open up on any invaders while they're vulnerable and then retreat to the next point.
They also might relish such weapons as their own personal "dragon fire" and attach cultural or even religious significance.

The first dragon who actively takes advantage of it would have a huge edge too, any threats having to slog through kobold guerrilla warfare throughout the surrounding territory before they can even get to the dragon's lair.

There's that "tucker's kobolds" thing where the little guys become a serious threat through the right circumstances with things like crossbows and guns could just take that even further. One of the big historical changes with guns was that they didn't take nearly as much training or strength so even weak or inexperienced people could become deadly given the right circumstances.
