What would a magic system based on the Wu Xing look like?

Like Perfect World.
Legends of the Wulin? Priests Arts primarily, but all Secret Arts that game are about the fivefold wheel and the relationships present within it.

>why have four when you could have 5.png
That's misleading. They aren't elements, they're phases/transformations.
A single object cycles through them over time.
Mostly when it undergoes some change of state (rotting, ageing, tempering, getting cut down, whatever else).
What I'm getting at here is, if something changes... it's not made out of different material of another element.
It's made of the same material it used to be, but that material is now in a different phase.

That makes a lot more sense than wood being strong against fire

The arrows aren't actually 'strong against', they describe two different kinds of relationship. Pic related.

This has been done by Legends of the Wulin already.

>metal generates water

The element that points the arrow "begets" the element it points to.

Condensation, probably made sense to the Chinese ages ago

Condensation. Also, one of the signs of metal poisoning is heavy sweating.
