Most of it looks good, though the plastic barb wire and sandbags don't look too great and would detract from how nice the rest of it. You can scratch build the fencing pretty easily and millputty makes good sandbags. You have a way to texture the open ground in mind?

It's masking tape, not sellotape, It's going to allow me to paint a dazzle camouflage pattern much cleaner than I could without.

Wash those bases with agrax, or nuln. Maybe even pink, green or red wash. Right now, they look very plain.

Oh and paint the rims
>>
>>51363583
Also, if you want to make your force a little different, exchange your green Ross to sky blue ones, similar in color to the chestplate of your lord.
>>
>>51363651
The bases do have more depth in person, I think the camera flash killed them. They had a wash then a drybrush with a light grey.

>>51363667
They have been painted anon... black, my colour of choice for grey terrain.
>>
>>51363694
I was debating going a different colour, but then I'd have to be painting the rods on the gauss weapons, and since I'm trying to speed paint everything it seemed more effort than was needed. I like how the green contrasts with the blue and gold too.
>>
Anyone got any tips for painting white hair?
Friend commissioned me to paint Celestine and the Gemini, but with white hair, and I haven't the slightest clue how because I've never had to paint white hair.
>>
>>51363754
I personally would paint white, then make a wash consisting of lahmium medium, nuln oil and drakenhof nightshade (it should be a pale bluish grey), wash over the white then highlight white.
>>
>>51363734
You can also buy colored plastic rods which are exactly the same diameter as the green GW ones.

Still, I'd love to play against your dudes, kudos!

I can get a nice smooth basecoat now, but holy fuck I fuck up highlights and washes/shades so bad.

I actually thought it looked pretty good. Perhaps you just need to accent the blue webbing with a touch of the green you used in the eyes? Splash a bit of color in the scales?

>>
>>51365399
few shortcuts, and alternate to what?
>>
>>51365977
they look ok from far away
>>
>>51363754
When you paint white the first thing you have to decide is whether you want a cool blue or grey white or a warm creamy white. Obviously this will depend on the rest of your colour scheme.

Then when painting hair the way I like to do it is sort of based on anime hair. Start by using your darkest colour for your hair colour, then give all the strands a slight highlight to pick out the strands as usual. Then you start highlighting only around the crown area of the head, each layer getting shorter as you get to your brightest colour. So you end up with the sort of circlet of highlights.
>>
>>51366050
oh, whats wrong with them then?
>>
How did you get through the beginning period, when every brush stroke on a mini just made it look worse and worse?
>>
>>51366025
I don't know. Just asking if there are any more cost effective alternatives to citadel stock hiding within plain sight or ways to paint more efficiently.
>>
>>51366277
Alternative paints: Vallejo Model and Game Color, P3 Paints, Army Painter, Coat d'Arms, Reaper Master Series Paints, Scale 75 (if you're rich).

Tools: Gale Force Nine, Testors (at least some of their stuff), Tamiya, some of the paint manufacturers also make hobby tools, so check those out too.
>>
>>51366355
Thanks a lot, I'll be sure to check those out.
>>
>>51365977
Those look great, anon! I'm a fan of brighter highlights myself, but those are fine. My only recommendation would be, in the future, wipe the rim of the base when you're done with the texture paint. They make basing easy, but less is more.
>>
>>51365500
>that mini
>that filename
Lost: Sides. Reward offered for return.
>>
>>51366463
Another question:
Since I intend to work with transparent bases, what would anybody suppose the most effective proxy base is for painting? I was thinking of using posterboard or cardboard to paint the figure on before sticking it onto the transparency.
>>
>>51366277

The cheapest miniature paint is Warcolours. Everyone else costs about the same as GW (a little less, but still expensive). They are all worth their money though, except maybe GW since they have less than others, cost a bit more, and come in dumb pots. Some GW colors and technicals can't be found anywhere else so those are worth it.

Warcolours is SUPER cheap and high quality. Vallejo is your gold standard for money per milliliter.

I would say that the disgust of Nurgle comes from gimeyness. High contrast, texture-rich monstrosities. Anon's model looks rather... goopy. That's not to say that nurgle doesn't have good-- he has lots-- but goopy in the melty, not plagued sort of way.

>>51366958

Green looks very flat. Bolter is monotone. White looks aight I suppose.
>>
>>51372578

Yea the metal was tricky. I considered working on my NMM skills but decided that would be way too much time so I just used my normal metallics. Problem is I haven't figured out a great way to bring definition to the mini when using metallic paints. Tried doing a pseudo-NMM kind of look using black ink and bright silvers but it didn't turn out great. Any advice would be great.
>>
Anyone have experience with casting? I'm looking for something that will best capture the detail of a space marine helmet pretty decently and is handy enough for repeating the process, say, ~10 times

So far liquid blu-stuff looks to be top contender.
>>
>>51372933

If you have to ask for advice, you're not going to be able to do it. Especially if you're dumb enough to ask for advice on /tg/ instead of googling a better source of advice for yourself.

This has been proven dozens of times on /tg/ with failed casters.

Come on anon, sort out the helmet and arm on the second from the right.

I also think you need to do a lot more to disguse that sprue if you're going to use it on bases.
>>
Alright /wip/, bit the bullet and ordered myself a bucket of white Viva Crackle Paint on Amazon to help with my ice bases.
Gone are the days where I had to wait for that EXACT sweetspot of the paint being dry enough to put on white paint but wet enough to not crack yet because I was using Agrellan Earth!

Also finished my Celestine's magnetized base yesterday. Had some trouble with the ribbons actually chipping off the paint a bit on the cloak, which I tried to counter with a layer of 'Eavy Metal to seal it, which only made it worse because even the dried 'Eavy stuck so badly on the ribbon that it tore off some of the red. Probably not going to do a lot against it, just repaint it and be careful, since it's in a spot your rarely even see anyway.
Will post pictures later today to undergo your judgement.

>>51366958

Get an idea of what you want to paint, and what you need to paint it.
Eg, Salamanders, needs green, black, orange.
Get parts you are less likely to use, eg spare limbs, guns, heads. Experiment with using the painting techniques yourself, to gain a better understanding of what you intend to do.
Then paint the models to the best of your ability, but don't expect masterpieces, as they are your first models.

So I want to put my Cawl on a crackle-painted base. How do I do it? I obviously don't trust just gluing him on top of the base, even after coating it with a varnish to make sure it doesn't flake as easily.

My gut is telling me to glue his book onto the base, apply the crackle paint, make a 'stamp' of his feet and other glue spots, proceed with painting him as normal and then glue him onto the finished base. I really don't trust pinning him, since he is that fragile and my drill isn't nearly small enough, nor do I like the idea of fully gluing him onto the base before painting either of them since he has a ton of fiddly pieces under his robe and parts touching the ground that will be a pain to properly paint without getting anything on him or on the base where it doesn't belong.
>>
Is it save to use Skull White / White Scar as primer if I don't want to use a black primer for my white models?
>>
>>51374827
Painting those on as a primer won't work well as they'll have trouble adhering to the bare plastic/resin/etc. There's all sorts of white sprays out there, including GW's own brand, so I'd recommend that you go with one of those. Other anons can point you towards the best brands, but worst comes to worst GW's stuff is a safe bet, though quite pricey.
>>
>>51374852
I always did wonder why they kept Chaos Black as their spray color while also keeping it as their standard layer black, just rebranding it to Abaddon Black for literally no reason, then rename Skull White to White Scar but don't also make a parallel layer version to Corax White
>>
>>51374882
Maybe to distinguish between black/white spray and black/white base paint? Though you've got all the other sprays which have the exact same name as their base paint colour, so who knows.
>>
>>51374908
Even there it's pretty weird that they tossed in a third name for their plain white color instead of sticking with the approach they had for their black spray and keep the white as Skull White Spray.

GW is fucking weird.

Okay, so I'm going to go out and buy some supplies soon to paint 1/35 scale model tanks, not /tg/ minis, but please be gentle. Have I missed anything?
1x hobby knife and some blades
1x flush cutters
Some sanding sticks of varying grits (600 and 1000?)
Acrylic paints for airbrushing (water to thin?)
Enamel washes (mineral spirits to thin?)
Two small brushes and two large brushes (two because one is for shit that fucks up the brush and the other is for shit that doesn't).
Spray lacquer for sealing paint.
Green stuff
Cutting mat

The only thing I'm trying to decide between is an industrial strength HVAC unit and associated licenses suitable for a 15,000 square foot warehouse and rated for adequate ventilation for all toxic particulates and vapours, or using my fan out the front of my shed.

Pretty good anon, especially since you're still relatively new to this. My only criticisms are some of the white bits; the doves and winged skulls on her legs could use a bit more definition, and some of the shading on her wings could be tidied up.

Thanks. The doves/wings don't even have actual shading to them, just a slash of Guilliman Blue in the crevices to emulate the effect Duncan did on them a bit. Ended up a tad bit sloppy, I do admit, but it's serviceable.

Didn't like the fact that those tiny scrolls were meant to hold the entire mini either, hence why I built up that rock and magnetized her foot to it. The scroll basically just "slots" into her cape to keep her from spinning around on the magnet and as base decoration. Still added a wire to them because I sure as hell won't risk them breaking off.

>>
>>51376939
Citadel washes are making / have made decent results achievable for people who aren't as into the hobby to find out about things not made and promoted by GW, so they seem like they've brought the skill floor up.

However, when you consider that people just washing and basecoating would just have basecoated in the past... you're probably just seeing fewer armies that are crime on your eyes. People who would have gone further get into washes sooner, and then pick up more techniques if they're pushing themselves to higher than tabletop standard.

I suppose it depends on whether you think that the difficulty of achieving the base level of an effect makes it better- there are slayer sword winners who use a wash as part of their process, and there are 10 year olds who get the manager to leadbelcher spray things and then slather them in nuln.

In the same way, there are lazy airbrushers who use it as another shortcut, producing tabletop standard with relative ease, and slayer sword winners for whom airbrushing is an integral part of achieving an effect that it still very challenging to pull off.

The same without a wash would probably involve very carefully blending from the shadows or a deliberate, cartoony darklining, but there's more than one way to wash a mini.

Recess washes feathered out, painting some effects just using inks / washes over zenithal undercoating, the classic GW wash + layer...

gloss varnish will just make the paint pearl off.

Working on a scheme for my Russian Coalition fleet in DW, and this is what I've come up with. Masked and painted with my airbrush. This isn't done- no highlighting and no detail work at all. I like the scheme, but I'm not sure if I should put the yellow slash on every ship in the fleet or just the lead ship of each squadron.
I have a problem, though. Masking just this one ship took more than half an hour- I had to cut the tape down from its original width and then cut each stripe one by one, and the tape really didn't want to stay on the model once it was there. Anybody have any ideas for other masking methods?
>>
>>51379743
Buy thinner tape. Tamiya and other brands do masking tape down to at least 2mm wide, maybe narrower.
>>
>>51379743
Anon, why is there a sausage in the background?
>>
>>51379698
>Should washes be applied in coats like paint, then?
Depends entirely on what you're trying to accomplish with them. Generally speaking with washes you actually *want* the runniness property at least to some degree so people do apply enough wash so that it runs into the recesses.

However, there are actual and legitimate painting techniques which involve painting entire minis with just washes. These techniques will do as I said and apply them in thin layers which do not run on the mini, just barely wetting the surface and not having any excess run. Here's a video which demonstrates some of this:
https://youtu.be/t1HBR6zYrfo

So the answer, like all things in life, is pic related. Use the technique that applies to your desired result. My point about not being shit is just pointing out that it is always possible to apply paint, no matter how thin, in a manner that does not run.
>>
>>51379671
>All white
Fuck you and the squig you rode in on, but alright.
>>
>>51379793
Hum.
My issue is when I'm trying to fill in all the crevices and such after base coating, or after basing + some other paints. Unless I really slather the shit on, it feels like it doesn't actually do anything. Then, to correct for my now darkened colors, I try to paint over the washed areas but only succeed in getting paint into the very same crevices and shit I only wanted the wash.

One issue I'm having is I lack the hand-eye/brush control to follow lines and shit without going over and making a mess like a four year old.
>>
>>51379761
I'm using Tamiya tape, but I should probably get some narrower- I have the yellow 10mm tape, when the 6mm would probably be better. It doesn't follow contours OR stick well, and the contour-following tape they sell only comes in 12, 5, and 2mm, and 5 is definitely narrower than I want. The bigger problem is masking this with tape is just going to take way too long given the number of ships I have to get through. I''m looking for ideas other than tape or liquid mask.
>>51379779
it's the handle of my sprue cutters, I used them to prop the model up for photos.

I'm not going to lie, I usually don't wash any more unless I actually want the discoloration it causes. Nine times out of ten I will create a thin, dark glaze and darkline the shadows I want.

>>
>>51380068
>But my drybrushing didn't highlight nearly as much as his did
The damper your brush is the more paint will come off it.
The drier your brush is the longer you need to drybrush before you get and equal amount of paint onto the base.
Difference being that overbrushing, as in using a wetter brush produces a harsher transition.

>>
>>51380185
put paint on brush. rub brush top on paper towel or tissue until 99% (give or take) of paint removed. lightly rub brush over surface to catch paint on the highest ridges. repeat until highlighting is strong.

the paper towel bit is the key. paint is wet (duh) and that's bad for dry brushing.

citadel dry paint is low on the water:pigment ratio, so it is easier to get the paint off the brush and still have the bristles be kinda dry. it is a luxury that isn't really necessary.

oh, and make sure you use an old brush. this process fucks up the brush.

Personally I think it's gonna take away from the mini and it feels a bit gimmicky.
You'll also have to make variants for all the bigger minis, including ovals, to keep your army looking consistent. The cog pattern might look awkward on oval bases.

But I also have base OCD and an aversion to anything that isn't either bevelled or straight edged.

Imo, only do it if you can keep it consistent. So for a killteam, it could work, not what I'd do for an army though.

So I finished off the left leg and started with the arm. Also jumped the gun a bit and started making a scythe handle to look like gnarled tree branch. I'm liking the idea of a mace though, just need to figure out how to make one, I guess I would need some plastic rod.
>>
There's either something terribly wrong with my airbrush, or with me. I got an Iwata Neo for Christmas, with the intention of doing priming and basecoating. Spent all today assembling models, removing mouldlines and settled down to airbrush. After 3 models no paint comes out, so I empty the cup, flush it through with cleaner, then water, then try again. No paint comes out. Disassemble the airbrush, clean everything, try again. Random spurts and droplets of paint but no proper action.

Finally resorted to drybrushing the primer on and got them all ready to paint, but what a fucking hassle. I'm about ready to give up on it completely, useless piece of shit.

I'd say hold off. The pose others recommended is dramatic, and the relative simplicity of everything there makes it kinda perfect as is. Slapping a behelit on him isn't going to do much to improve it, and might actually detract from how dramatic and imposing he is now since a lot of attention will be drawn to the egg than to him.

I feel your pain.

Questions:
PSI Setting?
Primer thinned appropriately?
Needle size?
Have you tested the airbrush with just water?
>>
>>51373107
I got rid of the mold line son the helmets and arm, it just left a lighter color line where it was. Its a very edgy(huehue) helmet.

Theyre also not glued into the base. I'm going to put them all on clear bases. Im just bashing a lot of stuff together atm.
>>
>>51381121
From the looks of it i would say dark reaper
>>
>>51381264
Around 30psi
Primer thinned, and has drying retarder added to prevent needle clogging
.35 needle size
Tested it with just water, still comes out in random spurts and drips.

Really pissed me off, and I don't have a great handle on my anger, so I came dangerously close to breaking something valuable/delicate. Punched my hand instead, so I've got a nice bruise now.

Don't punch things, think of your poor hand you've now hurt.

try a different needle/nozzle in case you've damaged them?
>>
>>51381584
No really, look closely if the needle tip is bent and if it is even a tiny bit try to put it in place, with care you jackass.

And if you wanted an airbrush for basecoating there are $20 airbrushes for nail painting that work perfectly well for that and even for highlights, you didn't need to spend $150-200 on a top-notch airbrush, specially if you don't even know how to use one.

For being your first it is very good.

Regarding your question, depends. There is a saying "if you want to paint black, don't use black". It means you should use a very dark blue/grey/other color as a base then you can highlight it acordingly.

But for a beginner, you can highlight it with grey.

I know about not bending the needle and all that shit, and the needle itself is fine. I got the more expensive, proper airbrush in case I ever wanted to try out more advanced techniques. Like the other guy said, it's not like it's a super high end one, it's marketed as a beginner airbrush.

Metal you've got a little more leeway, and can use more caustic materials, such as engine degreaser or acetone nail polish remover, both of which can melt plastic. Testing isn't as easy because there's usually less scrap pewter of whatever metal is used, but if you're ever unsure, try it on an hidden area of the mini if you don't have any scrap.

Yes, I agree with that. I wanted to see it in all its detail. That's why I thanked him. I'm actually glad that he posted a high resolution image. I'm glad he's not an idiot like >>51383375 is where they posted a tiny image of five models where you can't see anything but the broadest details.
>>
>>51385524
They're metal, so you can use basically anything. Acetone would do the job.
>>
oh, but make sure you remove the bases first. Acetone WILL melt the bases.
