While Islam and Christianity are very strong in Africa (like, really strong - Western fundamentalists have NOTHING on African fundamentalists) a lot of tribal superstitions still persist. It's not uncommon for a well-learned, Western-educated doctor to fully believe that if you sleep on the ground, tiny devils will come to get you in your sleep, or that some leaders have power because of their mystical abilities. They've had literally thousands of years of politics dominated by Big Men, and associated Big Men with spiritual power, and that's a tradition that's only been in decline in the last 100-something years at the absolute earliest metric.
