So, dumb rules question that came up the other day, /tg/. One player was playing Chaos, and running the Cyclopia Cabal formation which allows him to take over a non-vehicle unit and fire one of its weapons. The other player was playing Tyranids, and running Biovores.

The Cyclopia Cabal possessed a Biovore, and tried to make it finish off a unit of gants. Dice being dice, the resulting blast missed completely, and so a spore mine was supposed to be placed.

Who controls the resulting spore mine? Is it the Tyranid player, because it was his unit, or the Chaos player, because it was his shooting?

So what good are the castellan formations, anyway? I look at them, and all I can see is the ability to cherry-pick without unit taxes, which you get in return for not having any good command abilities. Formations are the New Thing. You take a specific group of models, and in return you get a specific bonus. This can be from the trivial (A lot of Chaos get to reroll attacks on the first round of assault) to absurd (Eldar now run 6" a turn and can shoot before or after doing so).

Just imagine it as a mixed-unit Melee oriented army. I brought 3 different units that all benefit massively from HATRED. Honour Guard, an Eversor Assassin, and Rough Riders. All of which got into melee since I know what I'm doing, and they all did a terrifying amount of damage.

It's not competitive, but then again I don't play competitive anyway, and it certainly suits my style of just playing for fun with other like-minded people.

Some formations or alternate detachments are alright. Like, I like the Corsair Raiding Detachment that Forgeworld made, because it's fluffy as fuck, has a cool theme behind it all, and has some amusing disadvantages to go alongside the advantages: You have your pirate prince, gathering one or more pirate bands, and while each pirate band gets a specific bonus of choice (non-random, think about that GW!), each pirate band treats each other as Allies of Convenience, as they normally would squabble without the Prince unifying them for a mission.

The Pale Courts Host is pretty cool in terms of "customization", even though it does have the unfortunate side effect of letting you do "3 Warp Spiders as Core, 3 Warp Spiders as Auxiliaries."

The big issue is when the formations are "All Tax, No Benefit" (Any Daemonkin formation that is not a Gorepack), or "No Tax, All Benefit" (Riptide Wing, Heralds Anarchic, etc).

Personally, I like the idea of getting rid of "Vehicle Destroyed - Explodes" and Instant Death altogether, and just having a rule called "Massive Damage".

"When you trigger an unsaved wound/HP with Massive Damage, you immediately do an additional D3 wounds/HP to the target, with no saves/FNP/etc. allowed. If a vehicle loses its last HP to Massive Damage, it explodes."

Massive Damage would occur for any "Instant Death" scenario, or if you beat the "to-wound" roll by more than 3. (For example, a S8 weapon triggers massive damage on 6 vs Toughness 6, a S9 weapon triggers it on 5+, etc).

Then shift vehicle damage chart modifiers so AP 3 gives +1, AP 2 +2, and AP 1 +3, and add extra wounds/HP accordingly (At first I was thinking +1 wound/HP per 3 wounds/HP, but it can be tweaked based on testing).

Make the game favor smaller numbers of "high-powered" attacks for killing big targets, rather than lots of "medium-powered" attacks for forcing saves/stripping hull points, especially since those "medium-powered" attacks are also good against everything else!

So the best way to take sisters before was MSU Battle Sisters in multiple CADs. The Castellan formation is exactly that, except it lets your troops come back from the dead for added value. In an 1850 point game, you're looking at something like 8-12 Battle Sister Squads, which means you're getting 3-4 squads and 3-4 Immolators back, and one more of each back out of those. That comes out to about 500-700 points of free value, which is even more than you'd get from a Battle Company or War Convocation.

Only issue I'd see is that you can get them back, only problem is they're footslogging/not making it back into action.

I do like the idea of taking Stormtroopers or Scouts as core, and rounding off with something else. The Taurox Prime is overcosted but is at least a fast vehicle while the Storm Speeder can get into the action quickly.

There's a joke build that interests me, with MSU GK Purifiers, and an allied Chapter Ancients formation of Lib Dreads. Those Dreads take Ectomancy, either for 3++ saves or Magnetokinesis/Electrodisplacement, while the Purifiers are mobile support/batteries, and tarpit-clearers (since Novas can hit enemies in melee and all that).

Or you could Magnetokinesis a sacrificial Purifier unit into the center of a blob of MSU Scatbikes, before Nova-ing them if you were feeling cheeky.

Sup /tg/. I've finally figured out what I want to do with my Horde of Rough Riders. I'm going to paint them up in the exact same colour scheme I'm doing my Custodians in, so lots of Gold/Brass, but mostly goldbrass, because actual gold has shitty specularity compared to brass, which looks more gold than actual gold.

I'm going to call them the "Wings of Terra". So they're an all-volunteer terran regiment of rough riders, who go into battle clad entirely in shining golden armour and shouting praises to the emperor. Their courageous deaths are then used by nobles as propaganda to inspire further Imperial Citizens to fight in the emperor's name. Who wouldn't want to give up their life as a civilian, in order to wear pimping golden armour and DIE GLORIOUSLY FOR YOUR GOD. THE EMPEROR SHALL WITNESS YOUR DEATH AND SHED TEARS OF JOY. THEN MAY YOU REGROUP BY HIS SIDE IN THE NEXT LIFE, TO CONTINUE YOUR DUTY OF GLORIOUS CAVALRY CHARGES.

Ironclads are an exception though. The issue for most stuff (anything AV 12 under) tends to be getting stripped by multiple glances/pens rather than anything else. Then there's Grav/haywire, which doesn't give a fuck about AV.

On the other hand, you get stuff like a Battlewagon, which is 120 points for 4 HP, but a Fire Dragon that penetrates it will explode it on a 3+ (+2 for AP 1, +1 for open-topped, +1 for being a Fire Dragon. Because Eldar are special like that) no matter what.

Another alternate idea would be to redo Tank Hunters so that it lets you re-roll vehicle damage (or negate defensive "reroll vehicle damage" results) rather than re-rolling armor penetration. This way, it makes more sense to give dedicated tank-busting weapons to Tank Hunters, rather than "general-purpose" stuff like Autocannons, etc.

Ynnead is probably going to be a purified, non-Chaos deity that the Eldar and Dark Eldar can unite around, so he has to appeal to both the CWE's discipline and DE's hedonism.

They aren't. The Craftworlders aren't "normal" Eldar and the Commorites some degenerate spin-off. "Normal" Eldar don't exist any more, or at least, the closest thing to them are the Exodites. The Dark and Craftworld Eldar reacted to the fall by pushing their ideologies to extremes, so Ynnead would represent a middle-ground they can unite beneath.
