In the backstory he WAS the leader - there's a big statue and everything - but when Overwatch was breaking down due to internal tensions he had a fight with his head of black ops where he appeared to die (when the building exploded). This fight is pretty important, lore-wise.

Then he stayed quiet for a few years, then he raided some tech facilities, stole his gear and went around as a semi-terrorist trying to fight the good fight.

Winston stayed at one of the Overwatch bases, so he was able to hit the "reactivate overwatch and call everyone up" button - which made them all vigilantes, but 76 was one anyway (and in-canon may not be in direct contact with the renewed Overwatch members - he's certainly not their leader. Though he has contacted Ana in the comics)

I think Widowmaker's brainwashing worked by killing every emotion she felt except the satisfaction from a kill. In the end it seems they couldn't kill her love entirely, but dulled it enough that doing the job was more important. It's why she sometimes mopes about it, but focuses on the job.

I find it sorta interesting, in the sense that that's not far off from how an ideal agent, regardless of allegiance, brainwash or no, should behave. I think I read somewhere that it's quite common for hitmen to befriend their first target.

See, I always got a more not-meant-to-be lovers vibe with Ana and Reinhardt, both clearly having strong feelings but not acting upon them due to keeping overwatch professional. But there is definately some kind of romantic tension there, Ana has a lot of lines with Morrison, but her back and forths with Reinhardt seem more honest and soulful.

Although Pharah still could be Rein's kid, although I doubt he knows and Pharah certianly doesn't. The ice-fishing sprays are an adorable potential hint, but they also had the "You know I had your poster on my wall once~" cute teen crush line, but I think having Rein end up being her father makes it a little too incesty for Blizz.

The biggest hole in Rein being Pharah's Dad is that Pharah was born before the formation of Overwatch, so Ana and Rein would have had to have met before joining OW.
At the moment, it seems more likely that the old guy Pharah was wih in the Christmas comic is her Dad and that Rein was an awesome, sense-of-justice-affirming guardian for Pharah during Ana's OW years.

Basically the Omnics (the robots) rebelled for no reason whatsoever and went full Skynet on humanity. During the ensuing war, several heroes started popping up turning the tide in their respective fronts, and the UN grabbed them and put them in a commando unit that took out the central automated factories. With their help the robots were pushed back enough that humanity signed a treaty with the non-dick omnics and things settled down, and the hero team became the core of Overwatch, an UN-backed agency dedicated to upholding peace, democracy, and so on. Autistic headcanon here: it might be possible that Gabe used Mercy's equipment himself in an attempt to heal himself after the explosion at Overwatch HQ.

Turns out it isn't really the omnics themselves that were doing the rebelling so much as some God AI's that got uppity and decided mankind wasn't necessary anymore. Pharah's little comic deals with the Anubis God AI where it was attempting to start up a crisis by controlling all nearby omnics. So less problems in the hardware department and more in the software department.
