In other news, I can't stop building BUG and BG decks. Please help.

>>
>>51309179

>>
>>51309173
Aether revolt's story is already out everywhere other than the mothership stories. Liliana is trying to revenge kill tezzeret to get back in jace's good graces because she misses the love she lost, tezzeret whoops her ass and then gideon and chandra fly in inside the heart of ghirapur, break the planar portal and beat tezzeret in a duel. He escapes to amohnket after shit talking and saying how unkillable his master bolas is, then him and dovin baan leave.
so the power of love>the power of love
>>
>>51309152
I wish, but at this point I'm pretty sure it's entirely driven by market research.

>gaywatch are just generic monocolor mages with a few affectations based on the characters they were pre-BFZ

I hope it changes soon but i'm not holding my breath.

Well bolocks. I was hoping from the last card in the plot series that either Bolas shows up and helps Tezz or Tezz finishes his job and fucks off to Amonkhet leaving the Gatewatch in Kaladesh.

Here's hoping Amonkhet's plot will be better who am I kidding the implied plot of Duel Terminal in the YGO cards arts is better than late MtG block plots
>>

Dark intimiations is actually a literal name, it basically means foreshadowing:the card. It represents tezzeret's post loss threats that bolas would be able to kill them all. Ajani gets spooked and goes to dominaria to get reinforcements but the gatewatch goes in because fuck logic.
>>
>>51309324

Ugin talked to sarkhan and knows what happened to tarkir, if anything hes plotting against bolas. You can't just headlong rush into a fight with somebody who is a master chronomancer, psionic, a deity manifestation of 3 mana types from the core of reality, a planeswalker, a necromancer, and a dragon that causes anything that physically touches him to die.

Rootwalla is good for it's 0 madness cost and pump. I'm kind of meh about this big lizard because of the GGG devotion, but I've built a few decks where it could be a one-shot machine.

Green once again this block doesnt have a reason to care about colors, if you can hold off the red green decks this card is a fine finisher against aggro, it also is begging to be used with rishkars, yaheenis, or barals expertise
>>
>>51309915
Literally as I read that, I cracked a Yahenni. Time to build monoblack boardwipes.

I'm pleasantly surprised with this set, I've got a lot of new things for a wide variety of my decks. Ghave just got a better hardened scales with Winding Constrictor. There's also a 2B instant that can give a creature indestructible, and restoration specialist is going straight into Brago flickerstax.
>>
>>51309730
How is this Craterhoof lite? It's not even close to Craterhoof. I'd kinda agree if the ability buffed all of your creatures, but that's not even good.
>>
>>51309489
I love OG Innistrad. How separated it felt from everything. Even the Planeswalker battle that happened in Avacyn Restored wasn't even the main focus. You still were focused on the people fighting for their lives against creatures that are practically built to kill them.

Then they bent it over and fucked it dead with SOI and EMN. I wouldn't even be mad about EMN if it had been a monster on innistrad that was driving people insane, and didn't have anything to do with Nahireeeeeeeee or Emrakul.
>>
>>51309971
That black instant is great, you even get a chump blocker with it. Just be careful with the snake, it will make infect matches a hilarious joke for the infect player.
>>
>>51309906
Nah, Prof switches up the art in his basement pretty often. Rotates between Lightning Bolt, Bitterblossom and a couple others.

I just love Lorwyn as a plane, even if it only rated just above Kamigawa in market research.
>>
>>51309981
Enters or attacks anon. Assuming it sticks around one turn, or has haste, you get to swing with 7 + 2(number of creatures you control). It's not overly difficult to alpha strike, and if you're using him to alpha strike, you don't even have to sell out with your tokens to ruffle some feathers.

>>51310023
Oh I noticed the infect thing. Thank fuck it only gives one extra infect counter per counter you'd receive. I think the snake could be a staple in Meren, though you don't really NEED that many experience counters.
>>
>>51310042
>muh phyrexia
All the market research from that time shouldn't be taken seriously. Cards from that block are still getting banned. Kamigawa and lorwyn have some of the best design. If zendikar 2, innistrad 2 or kaladesh had resembled either of those blocks there probably wouldnt have been standard bannings.
>>
>>51310061
The infect thing is a much bigger deal than it first looks, infect decks can combo kill you on one turn with this out. If i had that line of text on a curse for 1B I'd play it in every infect deck because it's so nuts with proliferate and pingy creatures. I can already imagine the 1 wheel infektusar kill.

>>
>>51310183
Yeah, but it's obviously a very meta thing. A lot of groups never touch infect, and more still run some silly houserule for it.
I'd say it's a relatively safe inclusion in most casual circles if someone isn't playing Nekusar or Skittles.
>>
>>51310183
I see your point. Granted, I don't play in a meta with infect outside of guaranteed combos, but it's something I should keep track of.

Did you see this Treasure Keeper thing? It looks unreal in Zur. I swear there has to be a way to play your whole deck below 3cmc if you keep sacing him and bringing him back. They've printed some very good cards at the lower rarities, though I only cracked a single fatal push in a whole box thus far with 12ish packs remaining.
>>
>>51310239
Totally, but the card does need the giant warning label because it would suck ass to lose a game of magic because you needed to have that 2 mana 2/3
>>
>>51310269
But, any deck that's going to use it is using it as a combo piece.

In my case, it's literally hardened scales, though worse with persist creatures. It's just going to enable Ghave to pop off at a reasonable CMC.
>>
>>51310259
Trophy mage is insane and you should be buying your foils right now. Its odd that they have started printing good uncommons again, but there isn't anything wrong with a card that can tutor vehicles and swords

I would seriously recommend having a sideboard alternate card to replace it with, it may sound deushy but it would suck to sit down at your lgs and have to go against somebody who has an infect strategy and a good fast hand that can get around your creatures and beat your face for bonus damage. Its an infamous archetype for a reason and the damage usually comes from nowhere. Obviously if your meta has no infect enjoy the hardened snake.
>>
>>51310348
Not every player builds decks the same way. The way I build infect is different than the way the kids at my lgs build infect. The only reason I stress the point is because inexorable tide is in all of those decks and atraxa exists.
>>51310369
Play it with hideaway lands, it looks like its fun

>>
>>51310467
Any deck that can ramp into a 6 drop early, doesn't benefit immensely from spending 8 to cheat something out. Maybe in a dedicated combo deck. Even an early blightsteel can be done more reliably t3-t4.

>>
>>51309053
Nissa is from Zendikar, though, isn't she?
>>
>>51311019
"Another"

No. Cabal coffers is uncounterable, and can be used several times a turn, effectively tripling or quadrupling your mana. It also costs 2 Mana to activate instead of six, is much harder to remove, and much harder to steal.

The pump on nirkana is never relevant outside of super weenie hut jr.
>>
>>51311049

Right, but Lorwyn elves hate everything that doesn't adhere to their personal sense of beauty, going so far as to banish those who for example lose a horn. So Nissa, given her lack of horns and hoofs, should have been seen as something to kill even if she isn't as ugly as a Boggart because she doesn't meet their ridiculously specific standards of beauty.
>>
>>51311074
>T. Someone who has never used Nirkana Revenant

A 4/4 body that you can play early with a cabal coffers is nothing to stick your nose up at.

calling the pump useless is also grossly undervaluing it. It gets out of control quickly

There's a difference between "Not as good as Cabal Coffers" and "Shit" that you're skipping over.
>>
>>51311347
Anon, you're an idiot.

Crypt Ghast is 4 mana. The pump is not worth 2 additional mana. Sure, it's nice if you have literally nothing else, but it's far from good.
>>
>>51311480
I wouldnt go that far but its foolish to cram in cards like that into any old deck. On the other hand depending on the playgroup it could be a perfectly fine card, not every playgroup is playing super legacy singleton slugmatch.
>>
>>51309996
The only thing that excited me about SOI and EMN is that if Sorin ever gets out of the wall, shit is going to be hype. But they'd probably fuck that up too.

Sorin having to kill Avacyn was legitimately sad though.
>>
>>51311480
Crypt Ghast is also a 2/2. The extra two power and toughness plus the pump does make it good for a decent amount of black decks.
If you don't like it, that's fine. There are undoubtedly better mana doublers in black, but that doesn't make Nirkana bad. It's just more situational, and doesn't slot into every monoblack deck the way Nykthos and Cabal Coffers does.

You aren't limited to just running Revenant, or running the other doublers. Running all of them is an option, and one that quite a few people have taken to.

This isn't a "Coffers, Crypt Ghast, Nykthos vs Nirkana Revenant" situation. You can run all of them at once

I'm serious, you don't need that many mana doublers. If you reach like 30 mana or so you can pretty much win any game provided you have a tutor or some card draw. If you run too many doublers then you have all mana and nothing to use it on

shimmer myr to drop your mana rocks at instant speed.
Whir of Invention to instant speed tutor for artifact lands or mana rocks early game, alhammaret's archive in the mid game, and idk something like psychosis crawler or any artifact win condition to close out the game. I think the Mizzix deck really wants this card.
>>
>>51312855
>recommended a mana rock that replaces it self late game when you dont need it

Cluestone is pretty good for two color decks.
>>
>>51312858
Yeah I really like Whir of Invention. The issue with it though is that it really doesn't have a lot of good targets in Mizzix. The artifact land thing is cute though. I might want to try that out. But Whirring for rocks seems not worth it.

Archive and crawler are good but I don't think they serve what I'm looking for. They are win conditions in shit like Arjun which I wanna build but Mizzix can just force people to deck out with how much mana she can produce with seething song, high tide, and a reiterate with some cards that make target player draw.

Speaking of Arjun anyone wanna post some lists?

Depends on the combo, combats are seen as fair since they can be prepared for while ones such Gitrog until you get Mike & Trike in one turn are frowned upon because unless we shit on their "fun" we don't have any fun.

The main thing my group complains about is how I spend money on my decks (woohoo disposable income) making them anywhere between $500 and $1500 each. Also Consecrated Sphinx

My LGs tournament "playgroup" doesn't get too salty about infinite as long as you don't do it to win before everyone has at least had their natural turn six. (You lost points if you kill someone before then)

I'd say Yisan for green and either Purphoros or Kiki-Jiki for red but I'm not sure on the rest. Maybe mono black Sidisi.
>>
>>51321583
I think Mikaeus is probably the most powerful mono black commander just for the combo potential he has.
>>
>>51321699
i'm not really into ~competitive edh~ but i don't think mikaeus is good for it at all. combos cost too much, too easy to disrupt, etc. i think monoblack wins most easily with doomsday combos and stuff, so sidisi is an obvious number 1 choice since you can tutor for it if you can't mulligan yourself into having doomsday or a cheap tutor
>>
>>51321312
probably just cut a lot of the bad zombos like soulless one and zombie trailblazer.

just a word of warning: zombie tribals are pretty weak. i can tell that your deck is going to be a pretty slow and weak deck. it doesn't take too much advantage of monoblack's strengths, which is its great mana doublers, draw and reanimation. instead it tries to be a face smashing zombie tribal, which is something monoblack doesn't cater to very well.

honestly, if you want to make a zombie tribal, i recommend focusing a lot more on the tokens. maybe even go golgari for token doublers and stuff like beastmaster's ascension. zombie lords are just kind of meh, zombie synergy like Gempalm Polluter kind of sucks, etc.

with a golgari deck, you'd have access to better sac outlets, better token support, better trample enablers, list goes on

What would be a good commander or color combination for hybrid mana tribal?
>>
>>51322494
What is Eye of Singularity for? Hosing Rite of Replication or something? Seems very specific to me, and antisynergistic with Dance of Many to boot.
Dance of Many seems like a worse Clone. Upkeep costs generally suck.
Consulate Crackdown seems mediocre. They can remove it and get all their shit back at once, which is a swing play I don't think you want to see.
You have a lot of O Ring effects. You'll want to cut a few.
What is Pyxis of Pandemonium in here for?
Windborn Muse is excessive if you already have Propaganda, Sphere of Safety, Ghostly Prison, etc., and it's worse than Prison in the first place because it's easier to remove (and in your case) it's not an enchantment.
Ardent Plea doesn't seem that good: as far as I can see your deck has few ways to take advantage of the Cascade or the Exalted ability.
Aether Spellbomb seems very weak to be spending recursion on. Ditto for Font of Fortunes and quite a few of these, honestly. Just bear in mind that drawing four cards with Font of Fortunes taps Hanna and costs (in total, assuming you already had Hanna on the field) 1U to cast, 1U to activate, 1WU (tap Hanna) to return it to hand, and then 2UU to cast and activate it again. Even if you spread that out over a couple of turns, that's still 5WUUUU to draw a measly four cards.

Meanwhile, why are Sigil of the Empty Throne and Luminarch Ascension in your "Maybeboard"? For heaven's sakes aren't those your win conditions? And if you're even considering running Font of Fortunes and Aether Spellbomb, why in God's name don't you have a Mesa Enchantress or a Kor Spiritdancer? The former is a dollar rare. Pick one of those up ASAP.

How do you build Maga? Just lots of big mana, and some stuff to make sure he can't be blocked when you swing in with a 30/30 maga?

The thing I hate most about commanders with huge mana cost is feelbad it is when you get countered (my meta has way too much blue).

If only cavern of souls wasn't fifty bucks.
>>
>>51323518
if you're in a meta with a lot of blue, you might find gonti to be useful. you can steal their counterspells and other degenerate simic goodstuff
>>
>>51323547
I don't really want to build gonti though. I am kinda interested in Maga though. Maybe Maga with a small etb subtheme? What are good black creatures to blink besides gonti, massacre wurm and frave titan? What are good cards in black to support blinking strategies, besides conjurer's closet and panharmonicon.
>>
>>51317853
Sounds like a guy in our group named Jesse
>>
>>51323610
Maga is a shitty blink target. If you already want to go with that theme Gonti's honestly your best shot.
>>
>>51323610
The new Massacre Wurm demon from Kaladesh for starters.
>>
>>51323661
A sub theme doesn't need to synergize well with the commander in my opinion. Also, I think the deck would be boring if it was just Maga. And I like swapping my commanders to switch things up.
>>
>>51323712
Having a piece of the engine on command certainly helps
>>
>>51323769
That's why I'm calling it a sub-theme, and not a main theme. The main theme would just be BIG BLACK mana and stuff to make sure Maga can swing. But if that would just be it then the list would look too much like goodstuff I think.
>>
>>51323807
Good stuff is literally what mono black edh is. You can add flavor and spicy tech, but every deck comes down to a core of big mana + way to abuse big mana all in one turn, or several turns if you go unanswered. For example a guy at my LGS plays mono black with a vampire subtheme, but the vampires are never why he wins, they just attempt to accelerate the game. Also maga targets one player iirc wich is mediocre af in EDH. In the end all black decks are the same 75~ish cards filling up the rest with commander of choice + tech cards
>>
>>51323959
I guess. But that's exactly why I want to add a subtheme, to have at least a semblance of originality in there.

I would say Azami for monoblue, but there are a lot of strong options. I would agree with Purph for monored. I have finally bothered to update my decklist on tapped out. I really love my deck and think I'm nearing the completion stage of building. I've done a lot of edits and play testing. Could y'all please check it out and see if it has any obvious holes (besides lacking fetches). I'm really in love with deck and am super proud since it is the first edhdeck I built from scratch. I think the only things I'd want to put in are Merciless Eviction and Sorin, Grim Nemesis but idk if they're worth it since that'll drive up the avg cmc a bit. I also need to do some shuffling around on the manabase since it is no longer in proportion. Also any secret tech/thoughts would be appreciated.

Only glaring thing I see is mana tithe. Yes, I love the card, and yes, it is hilarious, but it just underperforms in general due to the amount of ramp going around in EDH. Terminate could also be replaced for swords to plowshares; the way I see it in black white there is no reason to not have all of your spot removal be exile. it doesnt make a huge difference, but its really helpful against reanimator decks and gives you more outs to indestructable.

In general I am not a fan of tajic. even though you have tokens for days with queen marchesa (long may she reign), I still dont think an indestuctable beater that makes you swing in with two other dudes is worth the slot. If you are concerned about grabbing back your crown, I would replace him with Nether Traitor. Haste, unblockable, and it recurs itself.

Queen Marchesa (long may she reign) as a deck often generates a ton of tokens, so I would look into a sac outlet, and if you have the slots, a sacrifice engine. ashnod's altar at the very least fuels huge debt to the deathless, exanguinates, and martial coups.

Thats all I got.
>>
>>51325260
That nether traitor is bad ass! Thanks for the tech. It's rough cutting Tajiic he's a bit of a pet card but it's a pretty consistent criticism of the deck.

Could you explain to me how Swords is better than terminate. I know it is Exile for half the mana but this deck still has to beat face a lot and I don't feel comfortable giving my opponent life.

Thanks for the advice man. That was all really helpful.
>>
What's some good blink tech in mono black, besides conjurer's closet and panharmonicon?
>>
>>51325531
It's exile for half the mana.

It's the best single target removal spell in the entire game.

>comparing life to giving someone an additional land

And fetchlands / shocks suck because they lose you life, why would you ever play them over these babies?
>>
>>51325531
most of the time terminate will get the job done just fine, but when it doesnt, swords can and it will make a huge difference.

if you are trying to deal with an indestructible threat, terminate simply cant answer that and you are out of luck.

If you are facing a reanimator deck such as meren, terminate can only put it down once, but swords only needs to put it down once for good.

If you are concerned about the life aspect, don't be. your opponent will often only gain at most 5-7 life, and if you are destroying the creature to get in that will quickly be rectified.

If you still aren't convinced, next time you play EDH and have to use spot removal, ask yourself "would I rather have this card exiled? Do I need this extra mana? Would the lifegain have mattered?"

Actually, Refuges come in tapped. Shocks and Fetches don't.
A more accurate comparison would be pic related -- which, if there were a full cycle, WOULD be a pretty serious question, e.g., playing against a burn deck would make lands like these much preferable to shocks.

>>
>>51325658
Fetches and shocks are fine because I'm paying life to get access to 2 colors instantly instead of waiting. They help ensure you are always on tempo.

The problem I am presenting is that the deck has an aggressive streak and often time i find myself in the aggro race. When that happens I don't want to do anything that will that could shift the race in their favor (I.e. giving them an extra turn worth of life). Path gives them a land but that land is more like to mean nothing in my race to beat face.

Next if I path a 120/120 Kalonian Hydra I've removed a very real threat in exchange for a basic land land. If I sword that same Hydra I probably just lost myself game.

Third point is if for some god awful reason the I'm mana screwed I can always path a token for a basic I need or color fixing where as I can never meaningfully flip swords on myself to gain need life because I'll be just straight 2:1ing myself on a beatstick big enough for the life gain to matter and costing me the game that way. Or If I swords one of my 1/1 tokens I pretty much just wasted a card for a paltry 1 life.

Also you could be less of an asshole.

Swords to Plowshares is the best removal in the game

Lifegain is one of the weakest elements to winning a game.

Life is a resource, and exiling their huge creature for 1 mana is the best thing you can do in terms of removal.

I regularly Swords a 20/20 Marit Lage and win. Life is just another number you leverage.

>too many planes in the multiverse, and not enough "room" for them somehow

The big baddies of the multiverse are as following:

Nicol Bolas
Phyrexia
The Eldrazi
Slivers

The fear was that the Eldrazi were necessary, that their planar destruction served a greater purpose that they couldn't comprehend. Some theorized that they are the recycling unit of the multiverse, they come to planes that are starting to fall apart due to age, tear it into its base pieces and allow for new planes to rise from the ashes.
So if we just kill the Eldrazi completely, what if we regret it down the line? What if you doomed the universe?

The next baddie we are visiting is Nicol Bolas, he is basically just your average super powerful evil wizard bad guy that wants to gain absolute power at any cost. Except give him the power to traverse planes and live for fucking ever so his plans literally span millenia.

My personal favorite is Phyrexia. Too much to say about them really, they have a shitload of lore. Basically they want to spread the wonders that is phyresis to the rest of the multiverse, which involves tearing people apart and reassembling them in their true and proper form. Bio-mechanical horror.

Then there's slivers, the borg or tyranids of the MtG universe. Can assimilate any abilities into their own, and when they do so the entire hivemind instantly adapts those abilities. Grow at an alarming rate. Although they haven't shown up in recent history so WotC seems to just be ignoring them for the moment.

Anyone mind helping me out with this Maelstrom Wanderer deck? I've used EDHREC quite a bit to try to throw something together, but it doesn't look very cohesive... And I'm 8 cards over.

Any essential tech I'm missing? Any awful cards I should cut?

I'm not interested in any sort of infinite combo bullshit.

It's cool, that's when I started playing.

New phyrexia is more altruistic than yawgmoth was, he had that selfishness of black in him, phyrexia was originally about satisfying Yawgmoth's quest for knowledge and power over life, and it was quite sadistic

New phyrexia is more like "we figured out the secret to happiness and it's replacing your skeleton with oily metal, just wait it's gonna be awesome"

Urabrask was a cool guy. He protected the Mirrans from "Perfection", and that's why Atraxa has no Red. He refuses to work with the others.

I think you can go much lighter on the creatures. Many Wanderer decks use a ton of mana rocks to ramp him out fast, and hope to cascade into a Wildfire-style effect. Wanderer can kill via commander damage in three directs hits and he has haste, so I've felt that he's usually enough of a wincon on his own, especially when he cascades into Devastating Force or something. My deck is designed to have a ton of ramp and card draw, so even when you don't get super lucky off of the cascades, you could cast him again the next turn.

Here's my list, if you're interested in something a little spike-ish.

Karn did say "I have a lot of work to do" after Venser saved his life. He is probaby trying to purify all the planes he tainted on accident.

Not really looking for MLD or anything spikeish.

I'm more of a timmy and I just want to cast big spells for free, honestly.

Not really. Creature based decks want their shit sacced or throw up a token. Discarding a card in EDH often helps them more than hurts them. If you want to kill a planeswalker that badly, you have Dreadbore, black has a ton of sacrifice effects. It's 5 mana for eh.

Mirrodin is fucked. He tracked the oil to every plane he visited. So he is probably on unseen planes, cleaning up his mess before it gets to Phyrexia levels.

Well Fuck me mates. What do I do with Get-Gud? Thing's poison! Can't afford to build it. No one else can either. Card's only worth $1.40 in mint condition. Currently it is just languishing away in my binder. Guess I could splash it if i ever get around to building Leovold budget Wheels But that deck has a similar problem as Get-Gud. Plus no one would ever play with me again.
