Romans mostly won wars against tribal people with far inferior technology and much less unified. They hugely inflated the number of enemy in every single battle they faced, and basically had all the historians writing tales that romanticize the things for the roman side. When they faced the Parthian Kingdom, Carthage, among others, they either lost badly at first and then won, or just lost badly and them left.

Roman had some success with mass deploying and training of forces and definitely a lot of merit in their organizational capabilities and logistics. But the average legionaries was a pleb with a machete and a plank.

If you're able to actually grab somebody's hair, you're probably close enough to just grab some of their clothing, their face, or, I don't know, you could have made contact with their head with like, a weapon.

Unless somebody's hair was WAAAAAYYYY long it's not really a big deal. Typically people were more concerned with actually trying to kill each other with spears and bows and shit than focusing on trying to exploit hair length in combat.

If your opponent is close enough to reach around your head to pull your hair or to punch you in the face, you can, just stab them while they're trying to do so, since they lack a shield.

Oh, sorry. I didn't know I was talking to an August. Let me try again.

A dagger, knife, or similarly sharpened short length of metal, has a possibility of deflecting or otherwise lessening the in page from an enemy's weapon being swung at you, provided it is the right sort of weapon and your dagger, knife, or sharp metallic tool is in the proper position to attempt such a maneuver. In this regard, it is more advantageous than having an open hand, consisting of five fingers and a palm, attempting to guard oneself from the harm inflicted by a weapon.

Satisfied? Or do I need to cite sources for blades not going through metal as well as hands?

Alexander of Macedon made the shaving of hair and beards in his armies mandatory because in the press of shield-walls that featured heavily in warfare of the time, it was easy to grab a man by the hair or beard and pull him closer to stab him with your sidearm because you had little room to maneuver your spear.

Uhhh, fuck no, you don't use a longsword when you're grappling enemies with your off hand. They're far too long to be wieldy at such close quarters. You'd want something one, one and a half feet long, maximum. You'd literally be throwing away the reach advantage that longswords have over daggers and short swords in favor of far inferior close quarters control and precision.

I think it's Samson, an ancient jewish (I think, I mean he's old testament) legend.
He made a pact with god, that if he did not cut his hair, he would be granted massive strength.
He did all kinds of crazy shit (Like killing thousands because he was salty over a lost bet), until some whore convinced him to cut it, where upon he lost all his strength.
He was immediately captured by the jew's enemies at the time.
But he asked god for help, was given back his strength, and slaughtered all of his captors, killing himself in the process.
He's actually a pretty badass character now that I think about it.

I did this as well. This is like saying that training with airsoft/paintball guns can turn you into a tier-1 operator.

It can't.
Namely, where are the cross-guards and weighed pommels on your sticks? Carving a piece of wood to look like a sword does not a sword make.
>>
>>51279183

You'd be doing it one-handed with a longsword regardless, and because it's a long lever and the center of weight is much further away from your hand, it's much harder to control one-handed, especially given how long it is and how little space there is between you and the other guy. There is absolutely no advantage to using a longsword while grappling or being grappled by someone.

Knives are a bad idea in any situation except for really close quarters.
INB4 knife throwing, that's a skill that takes a long time to master, and even then relies on how far you can throw it, and relies on you not needing said knife anytime soon.

Professional armies of antiquity shaved for the purpose of avoiding lice, reduce enemy grabbing beards or hair, and to promote uniformity.

Modern armies primarily shave for the purpose of creating a seal for gas masks. Facial hair would prevent a proper seal.

Nigga, I've rolled health so badly for my current character.
He has 8 total hp.
I keep rolling 1-2s for my health rolls everytime I level, and have a -1 CON, which makes them one lower, meaning I have never gained more than 1 hp a level.
I can't afford to get hit, so I must avoid getting hit at all.
Thankfully, my speed is so obscene, and my character is so small, that I had an AC of 19 at level 1.

I'd strongly recommend:

> Not playing DnD / Pathfinder
> Not rolling stuff that will cripple you if rolled poorly. Use average.
> If forced to roll HP, go point-buy on stats so that you can balance out your strengths and weaknesses.
> If you're forced to roll stats, at least place decent scores in your Constitution and Wisdom.

Now I assume the DM is absolutely unwilling to negotiate.

> If your stats are locked, commit suicide, obviously or not, so you get to roll a character that is not thrash. Also, buy them expensive equipment that can be sold easily so that your suicides bring a bit of coin to the party. Acid, Alchemist fire, Low level potions...
> By then, the constant stream of new characters joining / characters dying will unbalance the game, and the DM might be brought to see your point.

Also:

> DM yourself. Works best.

IT's already been going on, but I'll remember your advice for the future.
But as of right now, my character is fairly useless.
He's not the most damaging (Glass Cannon Minotaur) , the most tough (Cleric), the stealthiest (Half demon critter thing), the best at magic (I mean, this is a given), literally all he has is speed.
His base land speed is 3 times the next fastest character, and that's not counting an ability that let's him go 5 times his base speed.
He's just fast as fuck.
That's all the little nigga's got.

Rapiers are longer than arm's reach.
Way too many of the world's best bred and trained men fought each other with luscious long ponytails and high heels. Wearing padded cloth rather than clunky plates and tanking shrapnel that would kill them years later from infection of poisoning after a lifetime of splitting fools open with his sabre and shooting the fuck out of mongrels with his rifle.

If you cannot have this kind of glory on your setting and have to worry about what Alexander did or what realistic 11th century armor looked like, you're playing the wrong era of history.

>>
>>51280998
There was a distinction between the Gauls (Celtic) and the Germanics though (even though the Rhine is an arbitrary border and some Transrhenian tribes conformed more to the Celtic model and some Cisrhenian tribes more to the Germanic model).

Gauls were generally deemed half-civilized, as they had high quality forging skills (the Roman gladius was actually based on the model of the Gauls, after they stomped the early-Roman hoplites into the dirt multiple times), had a complex coin-based economy and a Greek-based writing system (probably due to extensive Greek influence from the trade colony Marsillia (modern day Marseille, a North-African settlement colony)). They were, by the Romans, deemed semi-civilized (as opposed to the entirely uncivilized Germanics).

In the border regions it gets pretty iffy, but there was a distinction between Gauls and Germanics (what doesn't help is that the Germanics were so uncivilized they never wrote anything down, so all we know about them is from Roman accounts. Theoretically it's entirely possible the Germanics wuz kangz 'n shiet but the Romans never bothered to report that, though the fact that the Germanics never bothered with writing shit down makes that dubious).

Also because it's a fucking fantasy game, and no one's going to give you a disadvantage vs. being grappled for having long hair unless you're an outrageous faggot.
>>
>>51281019
I kind of get not wearing a helmet as a Hollywood/vidya staple, because we all want to know who the main characters are, but what I don't understand is why they rarely (if ever) use the medieval solution to this problem. Kings and nobles had elaborate armor and decorated helmets to make sure they were protected while at the same time ensuring that everyone (friend and foe) knew who they were. Combine a certain crest on a shield with a certain pattern on a tabbard and a certain shape on a helmet, and you know exactly who you're dealing with (and whether it's smart to run away like a sissy or stand and fight like a soon-to-be-dead sissy).

As far as fiction goes, the only example where this was actually done I can think of is that one King Arthur cartoon where Arthur and his Knights are a bunch of American Football players sent back in time (one of the earliest isekai anime was American?).

The only professional army in antiquity was the Romans, and depending on which period you're talking about, they did grow beards. Being paid wasn't the issue, it was whether or not the soldiers' sole profession was soldiery. Most soldiers in antiquity were only soldiers when they had to be, they were land-owners, farmers etc, who served in times of war because they were the ones who could afford equipment. The Romans were like that until the Marian Reforms made soldiery its own profession with state-issued equipment and the like.

Of course the Romans weren't the only ones like this, Macedon had a professional soldier class, as did Epirus and Carthage's soldiery was made up of mercenaries who are, by definition, professional soldiers.

This actually came up during the writing of the US Constitution, where the founding fathers decided that there was no difference between a standing army and a mercenary band, and so wrote quite intensely against the idea of forming a standing army aside from officers, for fear that its existence would encourage its use.

Have you ever ridden a horse?
Or been close to one?
A medium size horse's back is taller than a car.
Hell it's like sitting on top of a Jeep.
You'd be lucky to grab someones waist if they were on horse back.
