You don't normally think about it when you imagine unbalanced PC races, but holy shit, are the motherfucking pixies one of the scariest feasible options in the book or am I missing something here? Like, for a character? I'd pick that shithead over a minotaur any day of the week.

Hell, looking at them now in the Monster Manual, how come they haven't just taken over all the elf forests? This is some scary shit right there, and it masquerades as a harmless joke monster.

Same reason the dragons didn't.

They're not a player race. You might as well say that the Tarrasque is overpowered.
>>
Put up some fly zappers, then distribute insect spray and swatters to your party.

Your pixie problem is solved.
>>
>>51257916
Meh, OP didn't specify edition. They are in some (plus, they can be played as a monster race like most of them. It's a legit complaint that their effective power is completely out of proportion with their level adjustment).

That being?
>>
You're conceptually mixing the pixies with sprites. Both fulfill the "little winged fairy who lives in mushrooms" role, but the sprites are the ones who are useless and silly. Pixies are fucking badass.

Kind of right though on it's weird there's a tendency to depict elves as being the "nobility of the fairies" or something when they're so low on the actual power hierarchy.
>>
>>51258654
Maybe they are just the best at playing the political game, and pixies are just crazy and don't care about power?
>>
>>51256642

For someone who's never looked at a monster manual and never played a tabletop game why are they so powerful? just really high stats or a devastating spell pool?
>>
>>51258797
Very small size makes them hard to hit and big natural hide bonus as well, the only penalty for this is less strength which doesn't matter at all to most class archetypes
>>
>>51258797
Most primarily, it's because they can fly and CAN BE PERMANENTLY INVISIBLE (that includes while attacking), as natural abilities, from the get-go. Combine that with the fact that they're small, and thus hard to hit, and you can see how they can cheese the shit out of any combat with a comparably leveled character. ON TOP OF THAT, they also have a fair amount of spells they can use as natural abilities a certain amount of times per day regardless of class. AND they get high stats.

While it's true that they get a penalty to strength, it's pretty much irrelevant when they're never going to be entering melee range anyway (oh, and by the way, one of their special abilities is to enchant any arrow they fire to cause any of a variety of negative status effects/debuffs on the enemy) and bow damage isn't based on it. And yeah, they aren't the toughest around but how many HP you have doesn't matter much when NOTHING WILL EVER HIT YOU IN THE FIRST PLACE because you're tiny, fast, invisible AND ARE FLYING.
>>
>>51259219
>>51259327
Oh, and regarding the strength penalty: I actually forgot about classes at all. If you're using classes it's even LESS relevant since they make great wizards. So you just hang out behind the rest of the party, flying and invisible so nothing in the universe can hit you, and dish out an endless amount of fireballs at everything.
>>
>>51256642
Actually, a few friends of mine were making up a bullshit troll game and we did exactly this. Then we discovered that evil aligned pixies are the most nightmare inducing thing in the game.
>>
>>51258654
Maybe as a group, if you pick any random elf and any random pixie the pixie will be ten times scarier in a fight.

But as individuals go, there are more level 15-20 Elf wizards than pixies meaning elf superiority. Pixies almost never rise up that high. That and pixies are not expansionists. They are fine to remain in their weird little mushroom forests and keep to themselves.
>>
>>51258710
See, here's the thing: you tell yourself, "there's got to be a reason like that - pixies may be more powerful, more magical, and more charismatic, wise and intelligent on average, BUT they are too rare, or naturally solitary, or have no interest in civilization, or no concept of society, or some other reason not to be the ones ruling the elves rather than the other way around".

In practice, though, none of those apply. Pixies are numerous (in fact, possibly moreso than the elves) and highly social. They have all the trappings of a civilized race, they live in villages, wear clothes (and not just animal skins and leaves, mind you - the MM specifically refers to their nobility wearing elaborate gowns, which, by the way, also hints at the existence of a nobility), are literate, play with musical instruments, etc. They have kings, queens and nobles, meaning not just a society but a structured one, and a grasp of politics. They can create weapons, jewelry and other objects.

As described, there's no particular reason why they shouldn't "outrank" the elves in the fairy hierarchy.
>>
>>51260023
>>51260040
Pretty sure it's that. Wizard class levels were the great equalizer. For whatever reasons, pixies rarely get those and since the same weird in-game based logic that means pixies should rule because of their highest stats also has to accept the fact that wizards are OP as fuck and a single one can effortlessly cheese themselves into nigh omnipotence, it only stands to reason the high amount of elf wizards is how they ended up at the top.

Low leveled flight tends to be a pretty big dealbreaker. Fairies are marginally more balanced by having non-existant HP and strength at those levels, but the amount of settings they appear in can be counted on one hand.

5E actually mixed them for the most part, though.

For once, they switched the roles around - pixies are now the playful little fairy children who frolick around the flowers and sprites are the forest warriors buzzing around showering you with poison arrows. Neither now has the insane stats they had back in 3.5e, neither can remain invisible while attacking, and the sprites don't even have any spell-like abilities (the pixies do, but they're also stated to be pacifists who are usually too busy merrymaking to care about anything adventurous).

Also both got shrunk to Tiny size and had their abilities cut back down. They're now Challenge Rating 1/4, making the average pixie or sprite a fourth as powerful as the average elf (compared to 3.5e, where they were 4 TIMES as powerful).
>>
>>51261313

You need to catch them for that. Good luck when they're flying around invisibly, have cast four illusion spell-like-abilities on you before you even realized they were there and are now hitting you with Charm Person, Sleep and Confusion arrows every turn.

Could they not just be different races of the same species with those differences?

Seems far fetched. Pixies now have butterfly wings, what appears to be antennae (though this could just be the illustration) and weird skin colors while sprites basically look like tiny humans with dragonfly wings and no antennae.
>>
>>51263322
Aquatic and winged elves exist in the same species. Having a different type of wing and a funny skin color is like the difference between red straight hair and black kinky hair

My friend, it was evident from the just the OP that this entire thread was bait for that direction. Doesn't make it any less interesting.
>>
>>51263373
By your logic (i.e. attempting to apply the "can breed true" definition), elves, dwarfs, orcs, humans, and DRAGONS are all the same race. This is either Magic and therefore doesn't need to make sense, and the word "species" is used arbitrarily and interchangeably with "type of creature" for simplicity's purpose, or you gonna have to answer some hard biological questions.
>>
>>51263774
Same species*, godfuckingdammit.
>>
>>51263774

Because half-dragons can't breed, at least not naturally in 5e.
>>
>>51263774
Species isn't used though, everything is a "race" and how related they all are is unclear at best

>CAN BE PERMANENTLY INVISIBLE

No, much worse. Pixies can become visible at-will.

Roll the ramifications of that around your brain a few times. Their native state is invisible. Render one unconscious? Invisible. Kill it? Invisible corpse. Unless you can produce said invisible corpse, what proof do you have that you killed it? It could very well just scarper, only to come back later, cut every strap on your armor, then manipulate a clutch of Dire Something Awfuls through your camp. And it will.

Best answer to pixies: psionics, then burn it to a fine crisp, mix the ash with mortar, then throw the resulting slab into a deep lake. Consider cold iron chains.
