>>
>>51255260
Why not Shadowrun? Seriously.
>>
>>51244103
Well first you have to decide what part of Africa you're basing your setting off of unless you're going for a pan-African mishmash of various beliefs, but there are some things that show up a lot.

First off, child heroes and people born specifically to be heroes. There are a lot of stories about a woman giving birth to a supernatural child, that can sometimes speak to them before it's even born. They usually come out the womb already as intelligent as an adult or sometimes with the body of an actual adult. Most times they're born to deal with a specific threat, some monster has started attacking the village, a punk hyena says it's going to eat the mom's children. stuff like that. But occasionally they're born with no noticeable purpose at all and just set off to prove how big their balls are like Makoma.

Another thing, there are a lot of spirits that seemed to focus on killing you in your sleep. I think one day I came across like a dozen creatures who were all some variation of "this thing comes into your house at night and feeds on/chokes out the life of children and the sickly. You usually have to keep them away with wards and such.

Duality plays a big part in a lot of culture's where monotheism hadn't really taken shape yet. I know some people in Africa regarded twins as being supernatural and possessing magical powers. I remember reading a story that said that all the Gods were born with a male and female partner and that they needed each other to form order. One time a Male god tried to form a universe on his own, but it all unraveled into chaos without his other side.

Cyberpunk Africa has so much untapped potential. Especially if you use Shadowrun because then you get to draw on the massive amount of African mythology that most players will be totally unfamiliar with. Seems a really nice changeup if your group is getting bored with standard settings.

A. They do, you know it, and are trolling
B. Even if that was true, the fact remains that China is a single country whose folklore has homogenized so long ago the different tribal elements are all but inseparable whilst Europe is about the size of Africa's asshole and has, due to various ethnogeographical reasons, had for most of its history a far more homogenic culture than Africa. The very fact that both Poland and France are Christian already makes them way closer to each other culturally than, for that matter, two tribes from the opposite ends of South Africa, which would be all but completely alien to each other in pretty much every respect.

I'm not sure anywhere in Shadowrun isn't a shit hole for 99% of people.

That being said Africa is described as chaotic and its internal borders are constantly shifting outside of a few stable nations. Frankly I find that appealing in a setting because the GM can create a custom environment and the PCs can actually change it without going against canon.

Totemism

Most African clans at some point thought their ancestor was some sort of animal, or was saved by an animal, or their ancestor saved the animal

This created an affinity with the creature

People have the ability to project their "bush soul" into the totem of their clan

The Bush soul is usually a bigger, stronger, and more powerful version of the real thing with sometimes a noticeable peculiarly like albinism

Killing a bush soul will kill the person attached to it, but killing a person's body while they're projecting their bush soul causes the bush spirit to run wild and even become a malevolent spirit

Sorcerers can capture other people's bush souls and use them to do their bidding, or sell them

Most typically have wild animals for bush souls, bust women often have domestic animals for bush souls

Most of it's from Robert Chew(crazyasian1 on deviantart). This series has more than i could possibly post and it's not just African animals either, it spans the globe.

Bonus: He includes in-world descriptions for each piece like this gem:
"Kudu Drones. While formidable in appearance Kudu drones are typically used for reconnaissance and observation. Theirs horns are long and can pierce most body armor, drone armor, and thin vehicle plating but they will only engage in combat as a last resort. Swift, graceful, and alert they are the perfect eyes and ears for any ranger or research operation."

Almost certainly the richest man in the world at the time. Actually modern historians still aren't sure they can estimate his wealth since everyone who described in primary sources said he was unimaginably wealthy. When he went on pilgrimage to Mecca it's said he brought so much gold that he totally devalued the currency in every city he passed through.

Economists actually theorize that accounting for inflation he WAS the richest man to ever live, and that the gold from that pilgrimage quickly found it's way into the hands of Italian traders, who became so wealthy they could spend money on frivolous things like art and science.

Yes, they say Mansa Musa was so rich, he funded the Renaissance on accident without ever stepping foot in Europe.

Employed in large herds of real buffalo these units patrol the herd providing real time data and intel on the animals and the terrain around them. Accompanied to each unit is an entourage of miniscule bird shaped UAV's built to mimic Oxpeckers. These little spies can easily transfer between the animals extending the observable area by many times. Due to the aggressive nature of the animals in protection the operator must remain at a distance from the primary herd. It is advisable to use either suppressed, air powered, or traditional weapons (bow and arrow/crossbow) so as not to scare the herd causing a stampede.

So, normal Africa? Well, african borders are kinda stable, but that's because they're mostly meaningless since a lot of government don't have control over what happens in half the country let alone the border.

Because nobody would buy it. Even afro-americans are mostly not interested because they feel culturally american and just want to be part of american culture, not to defend a different one (this is the origin of "wewuzism"). And the rest of blacks of the world are completely irrelevant to the market.

There are apparently many written accounts of him basically "Prince Ali"ing his way through the entire Sahara desert but I can't find sources on devaluing.
They do tend to also state that on his return trip he bought back a lot of the gold because it had become a lot less valuable because it devalued, so economically speaking it sounds about right.

Africa isn't really a market, especially for book, videogames and even less so for tabletop RPG. If I recall correctly there are one or two African countries where video games are getting popular but those are the exception, not the rule. And for all the racket the posturing pan-africanist make, they aren't much of a market either.

Considering he bought and paid back to moneylenders, there's probably documents detailing exchanges between Mansa Musa and merchants. Though it's kind of hard to pinpoint the exact documents in all of North Africa that say this stuff exactly.

For most blacks in America, it's best to just grab the usual european fantasy stuff and mix it with cowboy western with MAYBE a "In the past, we were the monarchs" with a Songhai backdrop.

You could, I don't know, learn from the game? Isn't that the point of media with cultural themes? I didn't know shit about Iroquois until I played Ass Creed 3. Prince of Persia introduced me to Zoroastrian mythology. Witcher at least gives you a glimpse into polish culture. Every greek based anything bathes you in greek culture. Why would all this not also hold true for an african inspired setting?

Ibn Battuta is the best example though he was not a contemporary of Mansa Musa he did meet some of the late king's contemporaries while traveling through Mali. There are also scattered written accounts of his pilgrimage to Mecca and his astounding wealth.

Here my history degree obligates me to give the veracity spiel when it comes to ancient and medieval primary sources: There's reason to be skeptical of ancient sources(particularly the numbers they use which are frequently exaggerated) since the writers usually had reason to make certain rulers/people/cultures/religions look worse than their native ruler/people/culture/religion(or whoever was paying them).

Additionally much of ancient/medieval history is actually oral history that was only written down years or even generations after the primary actors died. It's naive to expect that their stories remained unchanged after they departed this life so we have to be careful about biases sneaking in. Sometimes the inheritor of the kingdom would want to diminish the accomplishments of his predecessor or erase them altogether but the truth can get lost even if there is no deliberate attempt to conceal it.

Being able to acknowledge and account for the bias which is present in all primary sources(even modern primary sources aren't immune from bias) means we're able to analyze them in a critical way, drawing a more complete picture in the process. Unfortunately for most of human history we only have a handful of primary sources to reference and sometimes we only have one. We can cross reference with oral histories and archaeological evidence but there are some things that we have to take on faith(for lack of a better word).

tl;dr We only have a few primary sources on Mansa Musa but they're better than nothing and tangential evidence suggests he was indeed very rich for his time. Hard to say if he was the richest ever though.

Not to mention that in those countries (we should say segments of the society of those countries) what makes videogames and other western media popular is precisely the fact that they're western and they feel it's modern. So there is another step to take even before africans decide that an african videogame could be a good idea and start to work on it. African countries are not the only undeveloped place where this happens, of course.

It's not that it can't happen, it's that it needs something else to make it sell. Prince of Persia and specially Assassin's Creed introduced people to relatively unknown periods and cultures (although they're a bit shit at it) but that's something collateral. My brother is an Assassin's Ceed fan and learned some history from it, but he got into the game because you can kill people and do parkour. The same happened with the playstation Prince of Persia games, as a persiaboo I remember how almost nobody cared (me included) about persian culture while playing it when we were teens. It was all about the cool fighting pirouettes.

The same can be said about the Witcher, nobody gave a fuck about polish culture before it and almost nobody who isn't from the place started playing it because it was polish. It was a solid game (even the first) for reasons unrelated to (but complemented by) it's polishness.

Get a good and relatively innovative idea for a game, a book or a TV series. Something that surprises people but at the same time fits the expectations and fashion of today. Make this product, then soak it in malinese culture. Give it good marketing and you'll have the internet jerking over Mali just like you have the internet jerking over Poland thanks to the witcher. If it starts and ends in Mali (or Ethiopia, or whatever) your product is gonna be a failure.

I can definitely see a lot of parralels with other mythologies.
The 'bush' as being the outside, the wild unknown, that's definitely a thing in european folklore. (red riding hood not being allowed to stray from the path anyone?)
Evil being anti-social behaviour and good being social behaviour is pretty universal if you ask me, although sometimes evil has elements of subverting the hierarchy or being gross in it.
The way these things are presented as typically african it'd make me believe africa has had a huge cultural impact in the rest of the world if I didn't know better. That last post about the about magic, that's basically what all generic fantasy fiction uses.
>>
>>51257989
Black and african are not synonymous words. Western producers wanting to throw a bone or two (or a thousand) to a small group of the population of a western country for political reasons has nothing to do with Africa. Even if they use a character that is "African" for it, exploiting the mistake that you and a lot of people sadly makes of confusing black with african.
>>
>>51258065
So basically, just make it a good game? That's true of everything. My point is there is nothing particularly toxic about african culture and people will indeed buy it as long as it's fun.

>>

Oh definitely, it's just how little people outside of Africa know about it would make it a bit difficult for say, a common guy to know a lot about it.
That said, I'm pretty sure that a game with a fantasy black dude on the cover Witcher-style for console would have pretty much every black person with a console buy it on principle.

>>
>>51258215
Well, I think if the game WAS good and rather unique and not some identity-politics-pandering shitfest, such a game could potentially be quite the ground breaker. But, as it is, the industry right now isn't pushing black characters for the sake of telling interesting stories or exploring new settings but rather merely to get their brownie points and supposedly 'sticking it to the man'...in spite of how all major corporations and government are on board with the progressive bullshit.
>>
>>51258123
>That last post about the about magic, that's basically what all generic fantasy fiction uses.
Apparently the difference is that African folklore has craftsmen be the magic tool makers, whereas European mythology has the learned people be the magic users. European magic wielders know the secrets of reading and writing to do things, whereas African ones learned it as a trade from a master.
>>
>>51258233
Wait, so a cover EXACTLY like this, same quality and everything, just in a desert instead of a dark forest, and featuring a black guy in fantasy Mali clothes instead of a white guy, and a properly Mali name like "Mansa" or such, would be a cheap attempt to appeal to race?

Way to sound like a "Black people don't want to see black people in media" type.

Modern Africa is basically like a fantasy setting. There are good cities making the money, and if you travel outside it becomes hell until you hit the next city or town, with villages dotted in-between.
So there's probably plenty of money, but it's concentrated in few small places in every country.

Like take the top earning cities in the US, of which there's like 5 making 90% of the US's money, and then fill the flyover states with tribes of blacks, rednecks, and indians with failing infrastructure. That's most african countries at the moment.

quote I'm stealing from a discussion of Taharqa a pharoh from the Kush led 25 dynasty of egypt

>I feel many critiques of Afrocentrism are just so utterly inadequate to explain why Afrocentrism exists in the first place that they should leave it individuals who can, because understanding why it exists is important, and not understanding why it exists is simply adding onto the discrimination black people in America (where the majority of Afrocentrist come from) face.

>Afrocentrism is a direct responses to a education system, and informal cultural institutions that reject anything of African origin as either illegitimate or not worthy of its attention--which is to say white supremacy as expressed via the education systems. They don't learn about the Nubian dynasties of Egypt, or any ancient African pre-20th century of note (and often the post-20th century black people they do learn, they only ever learn of the non-offending white people version, like how Mandela never protested violently against the Apartheid state, or the full extent of MLK is colour blindness). So no only are they told their own historical past is garbage compared to the shining European city on the hill, they aren't given the knowledge (or if I'm being completely serious here the tools) to make a legitimate counter-argument. And on top of that, generally speaking, they have less access to higher education, so they are unlikely to eventually get the knowledge and tools.

>So they, like most people finding themselves in unequal system built on oppression and discrimination, improvise to try find any means to be seen as legitimate. So we see these grand mythologies about how all of history is actually because of black people being awesome, instead of the multifaceted flow of people from all of the world interacting together. Understanding this is key to stopping this behaviour. No pretending that the mystery of why they do these things is just so confusing and hard to explain.

How much understanding do those poor sections have of the outside world?

cont

>My point was two-fold--American society, as a whole, doesn't give a shit about black people, be them important or not, generally, but especially people pre-20th century. It wouldn't matter if they were talking about Dumas, because people would simply find a white individual to point at and say 'this man is more important than Dumas' (and it would probably be Napoleon). That's the bedrock problem of society that exists, and has always existed, with a strong currant of white supremacy,

>Education is a secondary problem for afrocentrists, as it only ever helps them become more *correct* not more *legitimate* (as scholars, as historical peoples, as human beings period). Education would give individuals the tools to argue against white supremacy, but not defeat it. Afrocentrists are interested in the mainstream education insofar that can subvert the traditional power structure of society, not so they can correct it. That's why afrocentrists suck, but also why people who correct afrocentrists who don't understand them also suck.

It's such a stupid thing to take pride in, though. At best, it's basking in reflected glory, and at worst someone thinking they're special for something that actually means diddly squat.

I'll be proud of my own accomplishments, thank you very much.

You occupy a shit place in a society that doesn't respect or care about you. Your individual accomplishments are average or simply ignored, and you are told repeatedly your kind has never and will never amount to anything. Deep down you even believe it, because you look around and all you see are others as beaten down as you, poor, imprisoned, drugged up, struggling and hopeless. You have no history to look back on; your entire lineage you know of started in chains on a boat, and all history you've read only reiterates this over and over as if it's the only thing about your race that has ever been significant.

And then you hear that none of this is actually your fault. That your people, and by proxy you were once great and noble, the greatest and noblest even. Everything that saps your will to live is not part of a complex system of social interactions far too entangled to ever fully sort out, but simply the act of the evil whitey that wants you to feel bad. It's a simple, feel good answers and people will gobble that right the fuck up when they have virtually nothing else to make them feel good
>>
>>51259029

no but it's what you believe whether you know it or not.

Look, one of these days you should randomly look up a civilization or a historical period you know nothing about and buy a book about it on amazon. read that book. Repeat.

rome, greeks , and egyptians have all been 1.) deeply distorted by pop culture and 2.) greatly overemphasized. as crazy as that is to say.

Because after all, what difference will postponing death really make?

The Earth is hollow and contains cities populated by different species of people, such as the Deros, the Teros, the Flugelrods, the Duwanis, the Dunakial, and the Anunnaqi. The legends of the Sumerians, Ancient Egyptians, Aztecs, Olmecs, Mayans, Hopi, and Hindus speak of these things (for instance, the story of the river Styx). Many of the chambers of the Egyptian pyramids lead to this subterranean world.
The prep schools of the American East Coast, predominantly those of New England, are institutions dedicated to the systematization and proliferation of the debauched Caucasian elite, via an intricate system of sexual dogma, most notably through what York termed "Hectorian-Marcottian group practices" such as rainbow parties and ookie cookie.

The physical body, when one dies, recycles from the ground in which it’s planted, it then penetrates into the atmosphere as film or dust particles and are breathed into the nostrils of human beings where they are recycled by triggering nerves in the sinus cavity. This sinus cavity works like a kidney to sift out the unneeded particles and relates the chemical composure of that which is needed into the mother’s blood stream and the human flesh is reanimated and this is the process by which a child is given form or flesh in the Mother’s womb.

Each of us has seven clones:

Clones are in tune with each other unconsciously and linked etherically, which means anything that happens to you the cloned counterparts of you feels also. For instance you may feel a sharp pain, for no apparent reason like your hand may feel like it has been cut and that is because your clones hand may have been. You can have an emotional break down out of the “clear blue sky” because one of your counterparts did. For instance me, I have had smoke come out of my mouth, it was a strange tobacco, for no apparent reason. It turned out my duplicate in Tibet smokes and the smoke came through me. I do not smoke anything.

Women existed for many generations before they invented men through genetic manipulation. – yet:

The great pharmacist and chemist Nergal Shar’etsar Ruler of the Underworld, was also involved in the breeding process of the new beings (Homo Sapiens). When Adam was a child of two years of age, three years of real time, the scientist Nergal went into his bone marrow to take blood to mix it in to create Eve, which was then implanted into the womb of Anath, Mother of Eve. This bone marrow is what religious scholars say is the rib (tsala’) in the Bible.

Homo sapiens is the result of cloning experiments that were done on Mars using Homo erectus.

“When the Earth shifts, babies will stop being born and that day will come soon. Babies are not really being born anymore. They are being cloned.”

Edward Leedskalnin and Nikola Tesla were Venusians.
Birds evolved from fish, not from reptiles. And some species of dinosaur, for instance the Tyrannosaurus Rex, evolved from extra-terrestrial greys.

The pig was created by Imhotep and Zoser during the time of Abraham, by grafting cells from the dog, cat and rat together, and was designed to help dispose of leprous corpses.

“Haven’t you ever wondered why for the simplest blood tests your doctor needs 4 tubes of blood? Where is all this blood going? The albino man’s ‘blood bank’ is just a sophisticated way of getting all the blood he needs! It is still a form of vampirism.”

Beverage alcohol is made cheaply available to Nubians by the powers that be in order to preserve their blood and organs better “ (just like they preserve organs in jars in laboratories) ” for later extraction.

Disco was created by the devil to win the souls of the Nubians: “The evil one knows that he can control the music world as long as his agents are within the A & R (Artists and Repertoire, who are responsible for choosing who makes it in the music world) of the well known companies. He cannot evaluate Latin or Black music because he (the evil one) has no soul. He only duplicates it… He had to come up with something to win our souls through his means, and he did it with disco.”

There is an underground road connecting New York and London. Furthermore, Alternative 3 is a fact, and Mars is being prepared for the evacuation of Earth’s intellectual and political elite.

“People like the Pope, and Queen of England and various political leaders of various countries and some members of the clergy gather at the major Sabbats to invoke the malevolent one. On each of these occasions a Nubian man is sacrificed.”

The Illuminati have nurtured a child, Satan's son, who was born on 6 June 1966 at the Dakota House on 72nd Street in New York to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis of the Rothschild/Kennedy families. The Pope was present at the birth and performed necromantic ceremonies. The child was raised by former U.S. president Richard Nixon and now lives in Belgium, where it is hooked up bodily to a computer called “The Beast 3M” or “3666.”

In Nuwaubian mythology, the barathary gland (sometimes seen as “baradjedi”, “barithary” or “barathory”) was initially a gland of the human brain that was later maimed by the Anunna (those who came down in sets of 50) in the creation(s) of mankind. This gland provided four higher senses 1. telepathy, 2. clairvoyance, 3. intuition, and 4. psychometry, enabling direct communication to the Annunaqi/Elohim/Neteru.

Nuwaubian leader Dwight York says that humans (other than York himself), are missing an important part of their brains, the “barathary gland,” which once enabled various forms of extra-sensory perception, or, as he would have it, normal sensory perception that is currently disabled in humans.

York wrote that he visited a spacecraft that is preparing to rescue loyal Nuwaubians, and that on this spacecraft he saw representations of barathary glands:

They showed me these little what looked like glass round balls about the size of a pool ball with 1 green light inside and names written on them, floating in this room around this big one about the size of a small car maybe 9x9 it glowed violet and rays of light would touch each green ball, it would turn yellow then blue then red. I knew them to be barithary glands that would need to be replaced if you can visit other worlds.

According to York, just as with our missing barathary glands we have lost our ability to sense many things, our relationship to time has also degraded and restricted our ability to see certain dimensions:

The time and space relationship is linked to the human and Earth’s bio-rhythms, and that determines how many dimensions for a world, which in your case is a third-dimension reality, are up for grabs. This is dealing with the extra space we have in our time. Let me explain. The clocks on Earth used to have a “tick” and a “tock.” Now there is only the “tick.” So time has been changed, and that missing “tock” is up for grabs that can be utilized by extraterrestrial beings who overstand this “altered time,” and they can come in and out of this dimension at will.

It's not so much that, but the fact that they played the same things they always do.
I'd written up this setting from scratch, spending a lot of time hunched over obscure books to come up with something new and different because I thought my players would like it.

And with the exception of the mage, they made almost no effort to do anything similar.
Yeah, maybe that's a GM's lot, but still.

Don't forget that there is a lot of archeological stuff still to be discovered. About a year or more ago, archeologists discovered a pretty big city ruin in a coastal jungle/swamp, of some East-African medieval sea port. Given the size of the houses etc. it could have fit right in with any other European or Middle-Eastern sea port town.
The city probably was abandoned when the fucking muzzies came down south to convert everyone to islam with fire and sword.

It doesn't help that there are many smoldering "former" warzones and just ungoverned areas in Africa, which makes work for archeologists harder, because not every archeologist wants to do his or her work while surrounded by a small army of mercenaries.
