Have you ever rolled a character whose class is based off you or another foreign culture's class? I'm talking Hussars, Murmillo, Bokors, Shieldmaidens and the like.

>THIS IS IMPORTANT!
If you want build advice make sure to say what 3pp you can use, if any.

I'd honestly like help compiling a list actually.
Cavalier Hussars, Alchemist Plague Doctors, Barbarian Gladiators, Monk Taoists, etc.

What's a good foreign concept of a Wizard? Most people are familiar with the western hat and robed scholar.

I'm currently working on Avowed, but it will take forever since there are 150+ separate entries in the system to work through and that's before even adding pact abilities.

In case this ends up sticking as the true general, I'd like to ask here, too:

What do you guys figure would be a good way to lewd up a typical wanna-be evil overlord type?

I feel it'd be a good way to humanize him and give him a bit of levity to balance out his attempts at being an edgy manipulative sort, but as of right now all I've come up with is mind control shenanigans, and that's a little rapey-er than I'd like.

Give him an ab fetish.

If you don't like physically imposing women, then go for the legs/feet, and don't make it some sort of creepy caricature where he foams at the mouth the moment he sees a bit of thigh.
>>
>>51195858
Oh, abs fetish happens to be quite nice--could work quite nicely if he's a more wizardly type who sees himself as recruiting some kind of knightly bodyguard. Or if he's a warrior who respects power first and foremost.
>>
Do you think there's going to be a lot of salt over who ends up getting chosen for the various games reaching that point in the next few days?
>>
>>51196066
I hope not. But there will be.
>>
>>51196066
There wasn't a ton of salt over the comfy knight pics, so I'm hoping the same happens here.
>>
>>51196066
There was never doubt.
This is but inevitability rearing a face that people have dreaded for months.
>>
>>51195903
I'm glad I could be of assistance. The abs are so woefully underappreciated when they have plenty of potential.

>>51196066
Of course the salt will flow Anon, but thankfully the people who are socially maladjusted enough to get mad at other people for getting accepted won't actively make the game worse for the GM and his players, like they probably would have if they were accepted.

If anything I'm much more worried about the people who will mope about after not getting accepted. I feel sorry for them, but they need to realize there are only so many slots.

>>
>>51196123
How many spin off RotJRs do you think there will be?
>>
I've been considering playing a witch in an upcoming pathfinder game. From what I've gathered they are obviously not at all meant to get into range but considering muskets and pistols are going to be in I'm thinking of giving her a rifle to lug around along with a small cauldron she wears on her back (thinking of making her a Hedge Witch) along with her witch hat being a modified Ten Gallon hat so her flying squirrel can live in it because when she flys around she's using her rifle to do so.
>>
>>51196183
>not giving her a large cauldron she flies around in
>>
>>51196212

There was that thought and I'm not opposed to it but the idea of flying around on a musket has it's appeal you know?
>>
>>51196167
I'm hoping for a few so that I can get into one, but I'm not GM material so I can't provide any reassurance in that regard.
>>
>>51195237
Usually foreign culture wizards are Sha'ir (arabian, rooted in mistical types who would commune with spirits/djinn and were also poets, really more likely to be Shaman archetypes with some Bard thrown in) and Wu Jen (fake chinese nonsense possibly based on 'Wu Ren' that translates to warlock or shaman, vaguely based on generally asian myticism)
... You could probably find a better idea.
>>
>>51196183
Sounds fun anon! Hope you have a good time with the character.
>>
>>51195075

Nah. Text based. No need to try to RP with bitches that can't RP.
>>
>>51196271
Sha'irs are actually interesting.
They're basically warlocks who gets spells from communing with Djinns.

Sadly 3e's was shit and PF's archetype is bland for a fucking occultist.

>it's the 'text based games aren't RP' meme
>>
>>51196622

People who insist on text are typically groan zones to roleplay with.

Like dude, I want to talk to you, with voice and intonation and everything. Emotion is hard to convey in text, and conversations are like, 75% about conveying emotion.
>>
What would a merfolk and goblin baby look like? Just wondering ha ha.
>>
>>51196706

Some sort of abomination, probably.

Assuming a goblin can even fuck a merfolk, because I really doubt they can.
>>
>>51196673
Like, dude, I don't want to talk to you. You're a whiny mouthbreather and the only emotion you can reliably convey is boredom.

You're a decent writer though.

>>51196673
That's fair. Voice and text games are different sorts of RP. Personally, I don't enjoy RP-heavy voice/irl games. That sort of game tends to be most fun for me when it's more about the hanging-out-with-friends than focusing on characters and characterization.

On the other hand, many (not all) text RP games I've been in have tended to be... Less about that, more about the game. Loses some parts of intonation and emotion, but with skilled or enthusiastic players, that's not a big deal, and it's still very fun.

In a good group, you can read the emotions of a character out of words just based on context and flow of the scene. That's my ideal for text RP. Personally though I don't do pickup groups much, so I feel similarly about joining a blind roll20 game.

Some people are better at one or the other, or prefer one or the other. It is what it is, you know? Neither is superior, you just have a preference, just like me or them or anyone.
>>
>>51196673
You know what else is a major part of conversation? Nonverbal queues like facial expressions and posture. Do you want to go all the way for the FULL EXPERIENCE or are you going to pussy out because you're uncomfortable?
>>
>>51196600
Oh dang, that'd be cool. Thanks!

The key thing is right now I can do most of the grunt work. Even if the text of the abilities change later, that's not *nearly* as much as stuff like...

Well, to give you an example, at the moment I'm doing a bunch of mucking around dissecting bits of the core data files to figure out how to make pact selection, the least/lesser/greater/final clauses, and shapes all show up logically in the UI *and* export to stat sheets properly. There's a ton of hugely annoying caveats about variable interactions and rendering phases and two separate scripting languages crammed into the same data format and other stuff like that.

Compared to "what dumb workaround fuckery do I have to do to make this stuff actually output on the statblock like I want?", setting a bunch of ability text and changing ranges and stuff is easy.
>>
>>51196777
I'm sorry, I can't quite figure out what you're trying to convey since you only posted it as text.

>>
>>51196929
>a big girl
For whom?
>>
>>51196673
My biggest issue with voice is actually that.
Rather than roleplaying, I get some nasal guy whose text descriptions are pretty good but who sounds like he's thanking me for calling valutec-support whenever he tries to be emotive in his words. I get some fat creep who couldn't sound like a woman if he tried, yet insists he IS one now.

But more than anything I get people babbling on and on on tangents, using their freed hands to go find meme pictures from JJBA and not actually doing fuck-all in game for ten-twenty minutes at a time, and the GM is one of them.

And that's not counting whoever's eating that fucking bag of sunchips, or the guy with local trains rumbling across his always-on-mic every five minutes, the one with feedback or horrid static due to a bad connection who insists that typing's shit, or the one who's quite fucking clearly playing fucking Halo or WoW BECAUSE GUESS WHAT WE'RE HEARING OVER THE SOUND OF HIS OVERWEIGHT WHEEZING.

It's a mess to even understand, and half the time what you understand is unrelated to the game as well.

Osanna's development is kind of interesting, mainly because the player actually went through the trouble of mentioning she was treated like a tight warm cocksleeve by filthy brutes when she was a teenager up until she managed to establish a decent reputation as a high-class courtesan, allowing her to leave that lifestyle behind.

Makes me wonder how that background will pepper her interactions with the party and lovers. Will she be turned on by rough anal, or see it as a bitter reminder of her less glamorous past?

With the party? She'll peddle her other skills freely, and if the subject of her lifestyle or profession comes up in conversation, she won't shy away from it. With lovers? It depends; are they someone she wants to be with on the regular for romantic purposes? With someone like that, probably a little self-conscious!

>Will she be turned on by rough anal, or see it as a bitter reminder of her less glamorous past?
Both. Shame can be lewd.

I'm honestly a fan of text for a number of reasons.

I find it easier to separate from myself and RP when I don't have to do it with my own distracting-ass voice. I'd get embarrassed for my own damn self trying to pull that off when I'm actually on my own.

As an extension of point A, there is the other people aspect too. Most people aren't actors, and in addition to that, actors are chosen to match the character they'll be playing as well as possible. This is not how people make their characters for games like this usually. They MIGHT make a character they know they can RP by speech, but expecting people to ONLY do so is illogical.

Also.

Scrollback is a godsend. What was the name of that guy we talked to? Check the logs! What city were we headed for? Check the logs! What happened last week? Check the logs! Wanna keep a solid record of the game? Logs!

>One of the gitp posters did make me realise: what do you expect an aether swarm specialist to do with their free standard action every round before level 6? There aren't any good standard action clauses for in battle use in the least clauses.

Pest Control's no-save fatigue around you is fairly good; swarm is fairly close-in as far as effects go. Fist of the Sky is being moved to Least as well. Overall, the expectation is that while you're maintaining the autohit damage/debuffs, you'll be moving, finding something context-relevant to do with your standard action, or at later levels, using more offensive clauses. Hopefully, Fist's reduction to Least will also provide a nice option. Grab someone and hold them in your swarm.

>>51197197
>Rebind
Made a note about Rebind Spell; it'll be adjusted.

>24 hour durations
A couple reasons:

1. Legacy. A major part of this class' design is porting the 3.5 warlock, and in particular, making sure that people who liked that one are comfortable with it, especially when there's no real reason to change it.
2. Making no clause strictly a passive effect. Some being SLAs you activate while some being always-up looks weird on paper.
3. Counterplay: if you get dispelled in combat, the buffs are meant to go down until you get a moment to put them back up, rather than coming back 1/round at almost no action cost.
>>
>>51197316
1) Legacy is a poor reason. Look where it's got us in the past.
2) I'm not sure why this is a concern
3) Plenty of constant abilities state that if they get dispelled, it's a certain action to resume them. You could just have a note at the start saying what action they need if they get turned off.

It's perfectly reasonable to take issue with half the group being inaudible half the time, and if only a few are 'shooting the shit' while the only thing they're doing with their hands has nothing to do with the game, everyone else is waiting around bored. If it's voice-only, those left can't even roleplay with each-other.

>>
>>51197341
1. It's a poor reason when considered the /only/ reason, but given the goals of this design, I don't think it's a poor reason /here/. It is, after all, the same reason we have a grapple shape and most of the written clauses.

2. Perception of the rules is almost as important as the rules themselves. This one might not be as big of an issue, but it comes to mind. For example, the Invocations of the 5e warlock

3. After double-checking the rules and precedent on that... Here's another one that didn't occur to me until now, but I'm now remembering was a part of this decision:

4. The big thing is that doing that would require referencing a relatively obscure rule ("constant SLAs aren't actually constant; you have to keep re-activating them when their durations are up, and doing so is a swift action"), baking in an exception we'd need to call out specifically ("and this is truly constant, not 'we forgot to put in the duration'"), and finally, adding in another exception to cover the dispelling counterplay ("reactivated as a standard action").

Imo, that's more work than it's worth, and leads to way more complex rules for someone to parse than just installing a 24-hour duration. The latter is fairly clear—"you use this as an action, and then it's up all day. Reuse later"—while making them constant runs into the quagmire of rules holes that "constant" SLAs are.
>>

Still, even with those, why have 24 hour durations and not "permanent" or "indefinite" for the self-buffs (with a little sidebar somewhere to beware of dispelling) ? It'd have an identical gameplay effect, and it'd smack less of the "yet again, I activate all of my buff spells this morning" feeling.

That's because I'm a moron.

I misread a word in them. Fuck, I'm too tired for this, apparently.

>A constant spell-like ability or one that can be used at will has no use limit; unless otherwise stated, a creature can only use a constant spell-like ability on itself. Reactivating a constant spell-like ability is a swift action.

I misread "or one" as "is one." Repeatedly. For like a month, apparently. aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

>>51197534
Also I just realized I forgot to finish typing in my last post.

>For example, the Invocations of the 5e warlock are in some cases at-will abilities, some cases limited-use abilities, some cases constant buffs, and some cases extra stuff you get. This bugs me immensely, desu

If someone is reading a clause, I want them to know, just from the ability type, that this is "activate, and it lasts for a duration." Making some constant throws that for a loop, imo.

Imo, activating all your buffs in the morning is still fairly for a character whose powers are literally invoking a clause in a magical contract to grant them an ability for a time or a moment.

But honestly, I think it's clear that I am way too tired for this, because I just went and misread something important. I'll get back to you on that after more internal discussion with the other members of this team. I might just be a moron, or we might stick to it for the reasons described (or maybe other reasons).

I'm gonna go to bed.

>Imo, activating all your buffs in the morning is still fairly for a character whose powers are literally invoking a clause in a magical contract to grant them an ability for a time or a moment.

I think what really feels silly to me is that it's always EXACTLY 24 hours. That felt silly to me about the warlock, too.

If it was other long-but-weird instead of not-obviously-made-to-be-convenient-but-not-too-convenient amounts like "7 hours" or "13 hours per caster level" or "a year and a day" or whatever, it would bother me less. Hopefully you get what I mean?

"24 hours" as a duration for an at-will power does nothing interesting thematically, it's just the same as "Permanent (D)" except with more needing to announce things to the GM every day.
>>

Make it "a year minus a day", and there's a cooldown period of one day, so for exactly one day per year the character holes up somewhere and hides near-helplessly.

Nothing new or interesting shows up for the most part, and when it does it's quickly realized as either complete shit. mostly shit or vaporware (PoW errata, SoM, other playtest shit)

Without those, we'd be one of the slowest threads on the board.

It would be something, but I'm not sure if I'd come back. Having a GM that is 1pp only, PFS-tier really makes playing frustrating, and my experiences with anything online so far have been not good. I might reuse it if I do come back, but it was one of those ideas that was built with the 3pp and gestalt nature in mind. It's hard to find other times to reuse the character.

Feng Shui practitioners are more like Occultists than wizards. They use random items like potted plants (earth), aquariums (water), statuettes (wood/metal) and incense candles (fire) as implements to correct the natural flow of Ki and attract good luck.

An Eastern Wizard/Cleric/Druid would be these guys. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamabushi
>>
>>51198614
>As their reputation for mystical insight and knowledge grew, and their organization grew tighter, many of the masters of the ascetic disciplines began to be appointed to high spiritual positions in the court hierarchy. Monks and temples began to gain political influence. By the Nanboku-chō Period, in the 13th and 14th centuries, the yamabushi had formed organized cohorts called konsha, [4] and these konsha, along with sōhei and other monks began to take direction from the central temples of their sects. They assisted Emperor Go-Daigo in his attempts to overthrow the Kamakura shogunate, and proved their warrior skills to be up to the challenge of fighting professional samurai armies.

Several centuries later, in the Sengoku Period, yamabushi could be found among the advisers and armies of nearly every major contender for dominion over Japan. Some, led by Takeda Shingen, aided Oda Nobunaga against Uesugi Kenshin in 1568, while others, including the abbot Sessai Choro, advised Tokugawa Ieyasu. Many fought alongside their fellow monks, the Ikkō-ikki, against Nobunaga, who eventually crushed them and put an end to the time of the warrior monks.

Magic and Martial Arts?
Fuck that. Those guys are Magus/Paladins.

Greataxes, greataxes everywhere.

If you want to be a bit silly about it, have a background thing in the game be that an ancient vault was unearthed filled with enough greataxes for an entire dwarven army, so now the entire region is flooded with dirt-cheap greataxes. Like, so many greataxes that inns start giving them away with stays and people rig contests for the PCs to "win" a pile of greataxes that the village folk don't need.

Depends on the era. Mummy embalmers of the Pharaohs, "Five Elements" mathematicians of the Greeks, the hashashin of the Arabs, all of these could be considered a facet of the Alchemist class. But yeah, pretty much all of Egyptian history could have something that would be able to write "Alchemist" on their sheet.

>>
>>51198900
Yeah, the ones in the lore are generally so rare because you're either executed as a witch (whether or not you even had magical powers at all), OR you manage to live and grow long enough that anyone who dares try anything in that regard will see at the very least their bloodline end, possibly their entire kingdom cursed. Suddenly everyone wants to appease you and say nice things.

At what level would a fairly optimized party of 5 be able to take on a level 10 vampire sorcerer and company?

At what level would a fairly optimized party of 5 be able to take on a level 15 optimized illusionist?

How many casualties are you willing to suffer?

Is the party allowed to be optimised for killing vampires or illusionists?

>>
>>51199738

Is Absalom the biggest city in the world? I didnt even think it fucking mattered much. Paizo is shit at world building. No one cares about their most important city.
>>
>>51199661
It then depends on too many things to count. What company does the vampire Lord have? Is it on the vampire's home ground? Are the party going to be rested or worn out after battles?

Does the party know there's a vampire and can they get kitted up? Does the vampire know about the party and does he feel that there is a valid threat/can he draw on more resources?

Can either side set up an ambush?

At a minimum, the vampire can just leave with misty form if he has underground tunnels, but bright sunlight would be an issue.

You could kill a vampire at level 1 if he's sleeping. It's not a good question unless you have a party composition ready to go.

Illusionist is even worse. An illusionist can theoretically take over a Kingdom and throw all its knights at the party, or she could be stuck on a flat featureless plane with no pants on where anything she makes is going to be obviously an illusion.

For all Paizo likes to hype them up, the Pathfinders don't actually do much of anything except mess around with stuff they don't really care to try and understand. They're the kind of characters who will inevitably do something like wake up a great old one by poking it with a stick.
