Mages in this setting either chuck the occasional firebolt or cast one big world-shaking spell. The traditional response is five big lads in plate rushing in from different directions. No mage in this setting is immune to the guy with lots of big lads on the payroll. Hell, even the principle Mary-Sues of the setting can be overwhelmed when outnumbered.

The casual shit they got up to was mind-boggling. Only plot contrivance and willful ignorance of established feats by the creators kept this shit from spiraling out of control. At least they had the good sense to nerf the mages somewhat.
This goes for the mid and top-tier mages by the way. Potion brewing alchemists burn just as well as everyone.
