Otherwise they'd get whupped by any culture with advanced weapons and tactics. Therefore, having high intelligence tinkering around in a workshop being able to invent weapons, shields and gear should be a source of respect. Maybe not as much as just being a warrior. But some.

Kallura is a good choice. I'm not strong as I'd like to be for her race, but endurance is something, and with intelligence and perpetuity, I can do a good job breeding into the Kallura duchy and helping manage it.

There are CYOAs that do rolling well, Kingdom Crusher for example. That's because the rolling introduces an element of chance but still allows you to build something that can effectively mitigate the risks if you feel like playing it safe. It becomes more of a choice in its own right, namely a choice as to how aggressive you want to be and how many risks you're willing to take.

It also uses one dice roll per kingdom invaded, and if you're going for an aggressive build that means a lot of dice rolls. That's better, since it means that you're not going to get absolutely shafted by one bad roll, and you're probably not going to lose every single one.

Making the whole thing hinge on a single dice roll like this one is not good design. If you're going to do dice rolling, you should have a lot of rolling where each one doesn't completely screw you if you fail, not a single one that overrides the whole thing.
