All in all, it's pretty hard to determine where the line between "bipedal animal" and "very animal-like furry" goes, but I tried keeping on mostly on the safe side with these examples. For example, I guess the line is whether it would look weird if the character would look natural when quadripedal and without equipment.

Fable-style as in something like Mouseguard or Redwall?

I'd prefer something that looked like it evolved to be where it was.
>>
>>51163200
Well, one of the pics IS from Mouseguard, so yes.

>evolved
Well yeah, if you take that kind of idea to the game.

My setting is based on fairytales classical fairytales (at least, my take on it), so pesky things like evolution are pretty much discarded.

You can always tell when it's a furry. There's a specific art style that apes 90s animu and Disney design, with big eyes, soft expressions. The sexualization or at least the sense that this is the idealized avatar of some pale and horrible thing behind a computer is immediately apparent. Pretty much everything OP has posted comes from an entirely different mental territory. The artists there wanted to produce art for heroic fantasy. They didn't produce those pieces consciously thinking "this is furry art, I'm a furry". When someone has those directives in mind, it becomes utterly transparent to everyone what they're doing: indulging in a masturbatory forest into one of the worst subcultures ever to arise in human history.

It's easier to understand if you're not autistic, so it might be hard to explain to you.

Basically, the picture you posted is furry because the artist is clearly aiming for a sexualized depiction. The image was created with the intention of being fapfuel.

>>51164183
This image is not furry because the character is not overtly sexualized.

See the difference? If not, enjoy your tendies.

The problem with this logic appears when you add death of the author and autists seeking self-validation through attacks on acceptable targets. No one can prove that something is not furry, and there is no clear-cut criterion by which you can preempt you game being disrupted, either by a furry fapping under the table or by a social retard foaming about furries. Your least bad option is to wait and see.

Best animal character coming through. I really want to try to play a similar character sometime.
>>
>>51165198
It's buzzwording.

Technically, every anthropomorph animal character is furry because the furry fandom first built around this principle, but then internet snowflakes tasted blood and started to hype it up to the point of making everyone sick and tired of the topic.

So according to /tg/'s purity squad, every animal/anthro character that dares tread outside the boundaries of "ugly, musky murderbeast" is considered "furry".

I will admit though, stuff like >>51165198 >>51165449 would pretty much fit the bill because somebody, somewhere is definitely having a fieldday writing smut about these characters.

Well to compare your image to >>51164183

Your image has a shirtless muscleman with big, Disney-esque eyes and a tongue sticking out in what would probably be considered suggestive to a furry. Just glancing at that image gives me the impression that it was made by a barafag, and barafags seem to overlap with furfags a ton.

Meanwhile the other image, while you could argue toes the line, has a relatively realistic animal face and, like another anon argued, isn't overtly sexualized. A furry could probably fap to it, but I don't get the impression that the artist is a furry making furry things, they just wanted to make a fox archer thing without wanting to stick their dick in it.

To be honest, the fox image would probably set off a yellow flag if someone I didn't know joined a game of mine and used that as a character pic, and I'd be slightly wary of them for a few sessions just to see if they're actually furry or not (their actions would speak for it rather than the pic, since a non-furry could also want to play a foxfolk and even some furries can play animal characters while keeping their power level low enough to not act weird), while I'd probably shut down a player who used the pic you posted.

OP here. In this thread specifically, I would draw the line where if you remove all the clothes and put it on fours, it looks like an actual animal.

I didn't add that fox archer to my ref collection because it veers to close to the humane limit, and I want to stay very clearly on the other side.

Also, many of those examples have obviously human musculature, which automatically "disqualifies" it. It's supposed to be an animal, not an animal-human hybrid. Animals don't have tits, pecs and abs.

Most of it stems by the majority of furries and the approach of giving personality to animal characters. Fursonas are usually an alternative shade to their creator, thus they come off as more presentable and more of normal people with animal parts. Presentable as in doe eyed, Disney analogue features to be cute. As opposed to things in fantasy where things has a consistency and tend to view animal people as abhorrent so their aesthetic is more monstrous and intimidating. Thus making the former just look like degenerates who want fur over substance.

Now the problem is that the image you posted turns me on more than anything else in this thread by being so monstrous. Is it purge worthy? Yes of course! But the lesson to learn here is that no matter what it is someone's gonna fap to it. So stop giving a damn you autist.

>>
OP here. My reference folder for the setting has gone up from 10 to 40, so going pretty smoothly.

>>51174465
You are free to think whatever of my classifications. I think it's rather sensible, if we're going in the fable-style context, that, as you might remember, is in name of the thread.

Straight up anthros in fables would be pretty creepy in my mind.
>>
>>51181289

Tell us more about your setting anon.

As a guy who enjoys his anthro creatures for non-sexual reasons, I'm highly interested in what this will be all about.
>>
>>51181317
The jist of the setting is...

I already told it, indirectly. And no, not hidden in any post, it's in the title.

Fable. Not the Molyneux one

It's green-meadow light and bright fantasy, taking a lot of strides from fairy tales. Embracing the age-old cliches to the fullest, to, ironically, bring something else to the table. So I don't really need to tell you much about the Kingdom of Athaim, you probably already have a fair grasp what it looks like.

Most games I've encountered in the past years have either been dark and dreary, or pulpy and comedic. And the latter is usually fitted to modern or scifi-settings (Paranoia comes to mind).

So some questions sprung to my mind:
>When have you last time rescued a princess?
>When have you last played a sentient animal?
>When have you last played in a bright fantasy world? Because these days, even the standard fantasy worlds usually take a lot more strides from dark fantasy than bright fantasy

Most gamers, when asked, will probably say "Never" to at least two of those questions. Maybe yes to middle one if you've played Bunnies and Burrows or Mouseguard, or maybe they've rescued a princess in some part of their life.

Thus: retrofitting my own system, I started planning Fairytale RPG. Never been used in a commercial product, that should tell you something.

Sorry, started rambling more about my design philosophy there. But yeah, the idea is that it's a world where rescuing kidnapped nobles is part of a knight's job. The kingdom even has laws that can be abused if you kidnap / lock up a prince or a princess (which are used more as common words for young nobles rather than being a word for inheritor).
>>
>>51181556
Oh yeah a little caveat: the game is not ONLY about sentient animals, in this thread I was just looking for refs for Forestfolk, the third race among humans and fairies.
>>
I actually really like the design of JP-style raptors (and even the more accurate paleoart drawn of achillobator/utahraptor/dakotaraptor/austroraptor/etc.), snakemen,

It just fucking sucks you're automatically assumed to want to fuck them if you play them.

...also, I've yet to find any raptor-like lizardmen shit.

>>
>>51184817
why would you run a system about animals then?

idleness breeds heresy and cartoon animals breed furry faggotry. it's only matter of time between you coming up with cute ferret knights and someone wanting to fuck one.
>>
>>51185000
>why would you run a system about animals then?
1. fables
2. culling furfags
If someone's that degenerate that when furfaggotry is specifically disallowed they can't either contain themselves or decline to play, they deserve to be stabbed. Or at least kicked out so hard they bounce.
>>
>>51185268
Also, it's like saying "why do you have giants in your fantasy setting if you don't want size fetishists?"
>>
>>51185000
Wanting to fuck one and keeping it to your pants are two different things anon.

Just because Tieflings are core in 5e doesn't mean that all Tiefling fetishists are gonna start busting their nut at every possible turn. Some people can understand social cues and situations and when not to engage to sexual fantasies.

Just because the game can devolve to furfaggotry due to degenerates doesn't mean the game is worthless. It's not the writer's fault if his innocent game without such intent is taken and fetishized, and if he doesn't allow it in his table, to him, there never was a problem.

The problem is allowing shit behavior, not the things and intent behind the game.
>>
>>51185287
So you're planning on encounters with them being relatively rare, then? If I was playing or running a game where interacting with or playing as giants was commonplace, I'd almost expect at least one person at the table to have a thing for macro/micro.

>>51184373
Anthro as in anthro body type, or as in talking animal? If it's the latter, I highly recommend Guardians of Ga'hoole, even/especially if you haven't seen the movie. The plot can be a little predictable, but the setting and characters are great.
Though, you might not enjoy it much if you're a race purist or something; the BBEG is essentially a barn owl supremacist.

>>51185526
Pretty much this. I've played with self-proclaimed furries before. With one or two exceptions, most of them were actually pretty cool, and I wouldn't've known they were furry if not for some of them outright saying it and others talking a lot about stuff like Dust an Elysian Tail and Zootopia (and they never played one of the human-variant races when possible).
>>
>>51185526
This. I have no problem with furries, I have problem with them injecting their fetish in everything possible.
>>
>>51187404
Yeah. Magical Realm is a problem regardless of fetish, but furry seems to be one of the more common fetishes.

reading these comments give me the impression that everyone else's games have like seventeen furries playing. I don't understand how it seems to be difficult for everyone to have talking animal characters in a game and have it not devolve into fetish stuff.

I'm a GM and have run multiple campaigns with a bunch of people and we usually have one person playing a talking animal or something (because they want to try something that isn't the regular races eg: human and elf). And none of the campaigns have had any incident where someone tried to fuck the talking animal or other furry shenanigans. Like my setting got talking otters, penguin foot soldiers and armored bears and we haven't had any issues. How everyone else seems to have to put a preface in the start of their campaign with "nobody fucks the animal guy" seems surprising to me.

Maybe for once Tim the player wants to play as a penguin ranger because Tim thinks it's funny, and no magical realm shit had to get involved.

>>
>>51189737
In my case, it's more like an assumption from the get-go. If you plan bringing any fetish stuff to my table, stop. I never say it, because I think it's obvious. This isn't, of course, limited to furries. It's all who think that trying to put their magical realm into my game is okay, especially if it's explicit and distracting. I don't need to preface any game with that, because I haven't had any problems with magical realm, but in case it ever comes up, my personal code is very much against it. I don't insert my fetishes into the game, you don't insert yours.

just reading these make it sound like having to constantly shoot down magical realm shit is an everyday battle, which I'm kind of surprised.

The most distracting thing that keeps coming up in my campaigns isn't sexual more of foolishness, that I got is one guy who wants to always be a suave aristocrat character, which always seems to devolve into him looking like Zapp Brannigan and making situations worse.

That's the most distracting thing I got, so I guess I'm lucky, because reading these makes it sound like every group got some emotionally repressed sex fiend who cums under the table at the mere mention of the word "dog".

As an actual furry, I'm also surprised when reading how it seems every furry does this. Seriously, magical realm is for alone time only. And I know quite a few other furries who play RPGs who also agree on that sentiment. There are basic social rules you follow, and in addition, roleplaying sex with a bunch of other people you aint attracted to isn't fun or sexy, just fuckign weird and disruptive.

The last campaign I played in featured no sexy times at all, and the DM was an otherkin with 2 furries and 2 normies playing various races: lupin (me), tiefling (normie), dwarf (other furry), and tengu (other normie). We had to kick out a 40kid at the beginning after he refused to engage in the setting and who devolved into hysterics and a full on tantrum after learning that the dwarf player was a furry. It's pretty much this, but instead of "dog" it was "anything with a cloaca"
When he tried to have sex with a bird person, and kept going on about "It's a butthole and a vagina" I stopped him and told him he's skeeving everybody out. He throws a hissy fit
The next session he's fucking around on his phone, interrupting everyone to show them something on his phone, and just being a general jackass.

/mulp here, people mostly moved back to arguing about furries again after a few years. For the most part the only people who still give a shit about people posting pones are people from 4chan. I would imagine that's because the distinctions upon which the controversies lie on an entirely different axis from the distinctions between traditional anthro, bipedal, and furry art.

It's neither here nor there though. I find that most of the cringe furry stuff is satire and for the most part they just want to be left alone in their cliques.

I always thought a setting that dropped all the standard races and was instead just different "evolved" humanoid animal species: croc-folk, bear-folk, otter-folk, cat-folk, etc. would be potentially interesting. Just the thought experiment of "what traits do these creatures have and how would that translate into their society" would be interesting I think.

Sadly, it would "stink of furriness" I fear and probably hard for people to take seriously.

I guess it doesn't really help that most of these systems hire known furry artists to do their art.

>>
>>51220441
>So a system set in Zootopia, or more insular by species? Sounds fun either way.

Nah, I'd probably pick between 6-12 "known" races at the start, think about which may be the more successful as "main" races, the larger kingdoms/empires, then build the rest out as more "regional" powers ("croc-folk and frog-folk don't like being far from water, so they tend to stick to the swamps, lakes and rivers, and never where cold" which would kinda inform you where they would be) and there is always room for more as more of the world is explored.

There would probably be some social mixing but most would stay along racial lines I think. Though one easily imagines potential friends and allies ("dog-folk and cat-folk never get on very well having very different ways of seeing things, but both will stand together against the unknowable evil of the ant-folk!" or whatever).

Just something different that orcs and elves and shit, but yet still grounded in familiar concepts enough so people won't feel totally alien and lost.
