Hive fleets Leviathan is detected right around the time the galactic empire is formed, and starts arriving right around when the death star was completed. Could the empire military fend off the threat, or would they be consumed?

Lol just use the force

We all know that earth Vader can kill like a billion guys by snapping his fingers

It would be somewhat like the Yuuzhan Wong war, but with the Empire instead of the New Republic. Just mark conquered planets as consumed. Other than that, the Empire would have an actually functional space navy, unlike the New Republic which was building a fleet from scratch. Also, the Empire was largely united, while the New Republic was the heterogenous group one can expect after a galaxy-wide civil war, as the Empire managed to control the aftermath of the Clone Wars by the time the Death Star was built.
However, it might be likely that the Empire would struggle with rebels who believe the tyranids are just imperial propaganda to keep them in a war-time mentality like in 1984.

The Death Star would shit on whatever the Tyranids have.
>>

Is this the Star Wars equivalent of the 40k chaos fanboy?
>>
I think it'd actually be a really good thing for the empire. Nids provide a reason for even tighter and broader military control. Empire also doesn't have the main weaknesses the Imperium has against the nids, in that when the nids attack the empire will not lose their communication capacity, and can easily call in reinforcements. Coupled with how much faster star wars is I think this is the empires game.
Even if the nids curb stomp them on the ground and most of space, they could just pull almost the entire fleet around the death star, wait until the nids commit to eating a world, then blow it up. Repeat until nids starve.

It's another 40k vs. Star Wars thread..

Obviously and ground-based defense would be a colossal failure short of using many force users to boost the defenses and even then it would be really tough

The Empire's advantage here is in space, where their advanced ships and fleet tactics can really come in handy, not to mention the Death Star itself.

In ship-to-ship conflicts, the Empire has a lot better chances of defeating the nids than on the ground. The Imperial fleet is the product of a galaxy's worth of resources being poured into building and maintaining a shit ton of ships, and is therefore a force to be reckoned with, and could likely hold off the tyranid hive-fleets every once in a while

It is true that the Empire's real advantage here is their devil-may-care attitude toward their own loyal subject, as well as their capability to destroy whole planets at a time. This will allow the Imperials to deprive the Tyranids the biomass needed to expand and upkeep their massive amounts of ships and ground forces and can stop whole hive-fleets dead. Not to mention hard target the norn queen in any tyranid fleet

I wouldn't say its 40k vs Star Wars so much as it is "how would the Imperials manage this situation". It could be a neat discussion with a bit of an open mind
>>
>>51150098
>>51149138
>>51150281
In such a situation, wouldn't the Empire repair and reactivate any and all Separatist droid foundries, if not build more?
How would a droid army fair against the Tyranids?
>>
>>51148776
The imperials have the advantage of not being cut off by shadow in the warp, and of being able to reinforce wherever the nids are attacking much faster than the imperials could. In space the galactic empire should dominate, though it becomes a problem of fighting on many fronts and having to prioritize certain systems over others.

A huge problem for the empire will be genestealers though. The rapid transportation makes it very easy for them to spread around the galaxy, and genestealer cults alone could prove to be a threat on the same level as the rebel alliance
>>
>>51149908
The Death Star is just an exterminatus.
>>
>>51150281
But what happens when the tyranids start attacking important worlds that the empire can't just exterminatus? There's a reason the imperium gets dragged into ground fights with them, not all worlds are expendable
>>
>>51150144
Well, at least it's not Empire versus Imperium.
>>
Well... are we talking about Tyranids as they are now, or as they were when they first entered the galaxy?

I ask, because a lot of how the Tyranids are now are some-what a result of their adapting to the tactics and such of the races they've nom'd and/or tried to nom, so a Tyranid swarm from the galaxy in the 40kverse might look completely different than a Tyranid swarm from a long-long time ago in a galaxy far-far away.
>>
>>51154683

Not quite. Many forms of exterminatus can only be used on planets, not fleets, and only cleanse the surface of the world. Like virus bombs.

The Death Star can be used against fleets. Indeed, using the Death Star you could pretty effectively 'snipe' all of the hive ships that make up the core of a tyranid fleet. That turbolaser is designed to atomize planets, the Nids simply cannot put enough bodies in the path of the beam in order to block the shot, and even if they did you still vaporized a whole planet worth of nid biomass per shot so that's kind of a win too. And once the hive ships are destroyed, the hive fleet can't spawn any new nids or recycle biomass, so the empire just needs to wait for all of the currently spawned nids to reach the end of their lifespan (usually just a few days).

The death star even has a hyperdive, so if the nids get too close for comfort the death star can retreat to a safe position and prepare for the next battle faster than any nid could stop them.

So the Death Star could render any normal sized tyranid invasion pretty much a non-threat, even with just minimal tie and star destroy support. A very large nid invasion, however, could present more fronts than the death star can reasonably respond to. And I'm not sure how well non-superweapon star wars ships would fare against that kind of enemy.
>>
>>51156762
Even against a very large nid invasion, if the Empire were given all of their toys, I'm sure they'd be able to hold multiple fronts.
Eclipse and other Super Star Destroyers with support should be able to at least halt, in Eclipse's case even fight back, against them in space.
>>
>>51157117
Well don't forget that the Death Star is also a giant space fortress, with a shit ton of turbolasers and more ties to deploy than a hundred Star Destroyers
