I was a orphan adopted by Lunestier groundskeeper. A teacher saw that I have strong innate magical skills. So I got accepted in the prestigious magical school.

Hopefully with my summoning magic and tactics I can basically become a general of my own magic army and I can use arcane magic to protect myself and support my army. After graduation my friends and I can go on quests to find treasures and lost knowledge and help protect peasants and kingdoms. After I become stronger, I can take over a old castle as base and start small Queendom of magical creatures summoned from the different planes. Then become a famous mercenary company and have my magic army help settle conflicts in exchange for extravagant gifts and titles.

Eventually have more titles than all those pompous spoiled students at school who wouldn't except me because I'm "poor" and "low class".

Initially a student at Legem Dei, Tobias demonstrated great aptitude with the psychic abilities that come from the Teachings of Affectus. At the time, he was also a devout follower of the goddess, seeking to help everyone experience as much happiness as possible. However, his time in an academy exchange program has since destroyed those idealistic beliefs.

Traveling to Lunestier to learn both magic refinement and diplomacy, Tobias came into contact with the future leaders of the realm. They were an egotistical bunch, born into wealth and luxury and destined to rule simply by virtue of their noble birth. They believed themselves to be inherently superior and looked upon the common people as nothing but toys to be tormented for their amusement. Indeed, torture and murder of the lowborn had become the preferred pastime at Lunestier, and the academy itself seemed to consider such hobbies the mark of a worthy hero.

The fact that self-absorbed and sadistic brats were guaranteed positions of power and control of the realm’s wealth simply by virtue of their names convinced Tobias that his idealistic goals were pure fantasy. With such people ruling over the realm, abusing others for their own sick pleasure, happiness would forever remain out of reach for the great majority. Moreover, it led him to discard the very idea of heroes. After all, Lunestier was supposedly one of the premier hero academies, and yet in truth it was little more than a training ground for egotistical sadists.

Since then, Tobias has cultivated illusion magic to supplement his potent psychic abilities. The combination of the two allows him to produce incredibly intricate and entrancing illusions, blending together artificial sensations and emotions to reinforce the deception by making the person deeply wish for the illusion to be real and thus ignore all evidence to the contrary. The end product is, in a way, an extremely potent narcotic, and Tobias is both a dealer and a user.

Rather than face a world that he has written off as hopeless, Tobias now sinks deeper and deeper into illusions and fantasies of his own making, and he is more than happy to share. He has come to believe that it is the only way to achieve happiness. Since it cannot be found in this world, one must instead make a new one where it is possible.

They put it everewhere and sometimes it fits, like in the powers CYOAs and such, but here a story about feudalism in space it's not an integral part, i mean it's even called inheritance and heirs and such is a big part of feudal themes and then randomly comes anti-aging for some reason. I feel the same way about companions, in some CYOAs they are neded, but they stick them in EVERY FUCKING CYOA nowday, even in those where they quite clearly unnecessary. In some CYOAs i don't even read companion sections as they are just do not fit in.

Immortality is kinda boring if you're building CYOAs for narrative to make interesting characters/stories, but for a self-insert type of wish fulfillment thing it's going to feel like objectively the best option for a lot of people, so if it's too exclusive you're just sabotaging build variety.

So the simple thing to do is make it free/damn cheap, or not have it at all.

The more interesting thing to do if you're gonna have immortality, is design it so it's NOT automatically the best option. So you need powers/benefits so damn awesome that they're more appealing than immortality, or have styles of immortality with drawbacks (For example undead 'immortaility' like vampirism, zombification or litchdom) that make it more of a tradeoff.

Or another way to keep it interesting is to have multiple options and combos for the immortality so even if everyone goes for it, you still have some variety of builds.

So what's a good standard size for the background of a CYOA? I'm currently working on my first in paint and have gone with 1400x3000 for no particular reason, and am wondering what you guys think.

Also, I'm taking suggestions for the CYOA itself. It's loosely based on Prey 2, with the central idea of you being one of only a handful of humans stranded in a giant cyberpunk alien city/space station. Right now I'm just sketching out the general layout, but haven't decided how exactly you get there and what your career options are. You get dumped in the seedy underbelly regardless, so it's gonna be limited to stuff like bounty hunter.

An enemy with 0 in every stats might as well have lost already. But, you can make the argument that Health doesn't count, seeing as the Create-A-Class section doesn't allow you to allocate Stat Distribution Points to it. Practioner of an unorthodox combination of Divine and Shadow magic, Niccolo became a Battlemage to make money for the orphanage he was raised in. What one can do with Hope and Soul on their side. When one does not give up. When one refuses to allow doubt to petrify their blood. If you can stare down a Detritus, you have nothing to fear from a fellow Battlemage.

Josephine died, spending all her focus and mana on keeping the Det-Gall frozen in time to allow Sonya to atomize it. She saw the the projectile tossed by a Broudig, but refused to let it distract her.
She didn't yell out.
I could have protected her with my ice barrier, or Sonya could have zapped to her and carried her out of harms way. But Josephine knew what must be done. She truly showed Hope.

The choice you make is still enforced by the CYOA even when you forget it. Human with the Hunter's Mark- Attributes: precision, intellect, mind, agility, clarity.
Ranged weapon is a Magitech Musket. I point it at an enemy, and something important explodes off of them. I used to call it my Magma Rifle, but that seemed too impersonal, so say hello to Maggie.
Melee: I'm guessing a brass knuckle/ gauntlet would cost about 3. So, knuckles + wand equals Magitech Gauntlets for 7. I'll take 2. With these, I can hit something at top speed and won't shatter every bone in my arm; and when I channel my magic through them they really... pack a punch.
I prefer Battle Mage armor because it maximizes my magic and agility.

I started out by devoting myself to fire magic.

I used speed and agility to get in and deal as much damage as quickly as possible.

I started out as a member of the Knights of Alnor.

Cinderlings tended to be more of a challenge, but with my hand to hand skills and her wind magic, we still did all right; however, she showed me the advantages of learning multiple types of magic.
With my new experience, I unlocked Shadow.

Next, Séra and I went on a mission to deny a spawn point near the border (Denial). Fortunately, our sheer destructive potential allowed us to excel at this mission. After this mission, I devoted more energy to learning the ways of Shadow.

I think I like Hael more than Hevn. There are flames everywhere, and she described a glorious colloseum. I never got to participate in the Battlemage Tournament, but I think I would enjoy spending an eternity fighting alongside - and against - my allies in combat.

We woke up that morning ready for whatever may come. We agreed that no loss may stop us from achieving our destiny. Nothing can stop us now. We will prove to the world what we have learned, together. How strong we are, together.
How powerful Hope is, and how nothing can crush it.

Only time will tell how many of us make it. I dare not think of it.

Initially when I was counting it looked like it was going to be a Flame/Force sweep, many of the first builds had it. I'm more surprised that, for Caster builds, Divine and Arcane weren't more popular. Judgement and Cosmos look to be excellent damaging spells.

I took Judgement as more of a melee in-the-face spell. Imagine soaring through the battlefield with a blender of flying divine swords behind you--it's my basis for my Leona build.

And I'm quite surprised arcane isn't more popular, but I think it's mainly because it's very anti-magic focused and doesn't really offer much else in that regard. I intended for it to be the "force" equivalent utility tree for caster-based people, particularly with the void branch.

You have to be very careful with stats and how you distribute them.

If you have a section of choices where only a few have stat bonuses, most people are gonna go for those choices. It's an incentive to get people to pick the choice.

My mentality is to keep sections consistent with stat bonus distribution. If one thing's gonna give stats in that section, everything else in that section's gotta give stats. That or the other choices have to have some sort of incentive to give people a reason to pick it, which is sometimes hard to quantify when pitted against hard numbers.

The thing is, if I'm a caster, I don't want to deal with anti-magic. I want more and better spell options, utility that helps me position for spellcasting, and anything that boosts my damage or stamina with spells. Anti-magic is something that benefits direct warriors the most, as a counter to mages. As a mage anti-magic is often either detrimental to you as well, or inferior to just casting a spell.

Physical warrior focused builds, not caster builds, benefit from anti-magic to negate the caster's advantage over them so they can beat them up physically.

From my point of view arcane not only provides strong anti-magic but also very good utility for mages, their T0 gives them a bigger mana pool and ability to find mana recharge sites, void tap reduces cast time, void call reduces spell cost and haste cast makes one spell take no time to cast.

Its great for frontline warriors and mages.

Hell I personally think the two schools that gives you the most utility and well rounded capabilities would be specializing heavily into shadow and arcane.

You can very easily counter t1 ans t2 spells, in a pitch black environment or under umbra, you can physically a match against decent warriors, you might not be able to spam extremely powerful aoe nuke spells like a dedicated mage but the spells you can spam, are extremely accurate if cast from a vorpal/shadow weapon hybrided staff/wand weapon, incredibly good at piercing magical defenses and you can cast more of them compared to a lightning mage because all their spells have enormous mana costs that not even energy siphon and focus could make the difference.

More != better. To use generic terms, knowing Fireball and Iceball doesn't really help you much when you can only cast one at a time. It aids your versatility a bit in case you come against a fire or ice immune opponent, but you reach your maximum power in a given situation by only spamming one of them.

Therefor, the ideal way to build is to focus on only effects that can be used simultainiously. Umbra, Vorpal and Nocturne all directly buff Shades so therefor taking all four makes you 4 times as powerful in one situation whereas taking 4 different variants of fireball only makes you 1x as powerful in 4 different situations.

Ideas for CYOAs? Anyone got any ideas?

Truly based is this guy. Thanks for posting my silly character build (Raine, plunderer of grapes turned peacekeeper)! Ever since I posted that, I've been umming and ahhing over whether or not I should write a bit more for him, so I think I'll use this as an excuse to actually get some in.

Raine's recruitment into the Enforcers caused quite a bit of talk, to say the least. Obviously, stealing from their beloved Princess would hardly endear him to the rank and file. Beyond his criminal past, however, was the mark that he took on.

Someone with a talent for whipping up massive storms hardly seems to fit the typical hunter mold. However, it is precisely his ability to affect large swathes of land that make him excel as a hunter.

Using his abilities, Raine can alter the landscape around his target so that it is entirely advantageous to him, and utterly disadvantageous to them. Walls and spires of ice surround his prey, restricting their movements and often wounding them gravely.

As his target is slowed, Raine is free to use his talents to their utmost. Gliding through the ice with impunity, Raine strikes with blasts of lightning and blades of ice. Any unfortunate caught thus quickly finds that time is against them. While they struggle to free themselves, Raine draws upon lightning magic to recharge.

Should all else fail, Raine will use his ultimate spell. While in effect, Raine transcends his corporeal form for a brief time, becoming both the center of and a conduit for a massive tempest. Shards of obsidian ice roar through the air as lightning arcs between them, emanating from Raine himself.

All power comes at a price, however, and commanding such power exacts a heavy toll. At best, he is left exhausted, his mana spent and his stamina depleted. At worst, the aftershock will kill him.

Raine adjusted fairly well to living on the other side of the law. Well, after a few personal lessons in Enforcer policy from Anapiel anyway. Surprising himself just as much as anyone, he quickly grew quite protective of the people under his care. With gusto, he took to fighting crime and detritus alike, using his various talents to protect and serve.

Within this new family, Raine found a purpose in keeping the peace and making up for his past mistakes.

Guard duty, while menial to most, was a truly formative experience for a reformed bandit. Trapping thieves and quarantining the corrupted gave him a taste of being the strong arm of the law; he quite enjoyed the flavor.

Participating in the tournament was something he did impulsively - as part of an ongoing argument between Raine and Emeline, the two entered the 1v1 to decide who was stronger. After a long, brutal fight, Raine managed to warp the field enough to pin Emeline down and freeze her over. He may have been bleeding from just about everywhere, but having a heart made of magical ice made that slightly less important than you'd think. Later, he was soundly defeated by Eri Zivienne, but not before he managed to awaken his lightning abilities.

Hunting corrupted battlemages is never pleasant. Beyond the difficulty of the assignment, looking upon the murderous husk of a comrade is a harrowing experience. It is considered a special taboo to ask a hunter about their work, and asking Raine about his will earn you nothing but silence.

When it came time to liberate Ciraezir, Raine was among the hunters that targeted the Det-Tevr. With shields of ice and spears of lightning, Raine isolated the general from his bodyguards while the others went in for the kill.
