Anyone have any experience playing a character that is mute? or uses methods other then talking to communicate?

Whistling, hissing, and clicking noises, along with finger noises can do a great deal.
People forget that mute =/= deaf, and whistling can be very expressive.

Not mute just extremely untalkative
You can do a lot of characterisation through actions and body language, especially if the character in question has a very aggressive personality.
Not quite the same, butI once played a character that only spoke orcish and was illiterate because his tribe passed all wisdom down by oral tradition. Half the time he had no idea what was going on, but he knew when his allies were in danger and when he was under arrest. There were a good few times I came in handy for orc deplomacy because when you need to speek orcish, you really need to speak orcish.

Yes. Once upon a time, my fellow player complained that my characters always talk too much. So I've made a completely mute character that communicated purely through facial expressions and violence. He took his words back and begged me to play normally, so I consider my mission accomplished.
