What is your favorite flavor of post apocalyptic RPG?

MilSim: Twilight 2000, Morrow Project
Road Warrior: Redline, Atomic Highway
AI did it: Terminator, Reign of Steel
Science Fantasy: Metamorphis Alpha, Gamma World, Mutant Epoch, Mutant Crawl Classic, Mutant Future
Anthropomorphic: TMNT/After The Bomb, Mutant Genlab Alpha

Bad Wrong fun! Atomic Highway is overly focused on vehicle combat and is a unsupported dead game with no official releases in 6+ years.

We are playing Other Dust by Sine Nominie Publishing which is like D&D B/X as in their sci-fi OSR game Stars Without Number.

I do like the Mutant Epoch art but havent played yet. Hard to believe McAusland wrote, laid out and illustrated every single Mutant Epoch by himself.

>Morrow Project

Hard to believe that anyone still remembers that one... I knew the author decades ago (the 80's) when he was living in Ann Arbor MI and basically self-publishing the game. IIRC if you look at the old black & white picture of the M-60 machine-gun in the book you can see the tips of the author's shoes at the bottom of the image when he took the picture.

>>51136748
Other Dust sounds interesting, and as for McAusland - that's hella-impressive if he did all the illustrations (I've snagged a bunch for use with my Mutant Year Zero campaign) as well as wrote all the content.
>>
>>51130996
I can't pick a favourite, but it leans towards harder science fiction a bit. I've played a lot of T2K, Morrow Project, Dark Future ( a Road Warrior game), Car Wars, Gamma World.

>>51132629
>>51136712

I've always wanted to try this one.

>>51136777
It's a tool kit. There are a lot of encounter tables, which give a sort of implied setting. It does have discussion of different types of apocalypses, and there are some optional rules for civilized apes, radioactive zombies

>>51141607
>Hard to believe that anyone still remembers that one... I knew the author decades ago (the 80's) when he was living in Ann Arbor MI and basically self-publishing the game.

I'm yet another Morrow Project fan. There was a new edition not all that many years ago, so there is still some interest.

There is a sort of tribute to the Project in the setting of the German game Degenesis, quite a neat take on what happens to the sleeping re-builders when the apocalypse happens.

While I'm not a fan of the Deadlands system, I quite enjoyed Hell on Earth. Must also be because we had a great DM that really managed the post-apocalyptic/horror vibe well. We were constantly in danger - nights were especially dreadful as we were constantly stalked, harassed or attacked . We never had enough ammo, fuel, food or medical supply and constantly and to scavenge, loot or steal whatever we could. No combat was easy - even a total victory meant spending ammo and chips that would probably be much needed later on. Most survivors couldn't be trusted and the ones that could were mostly useless.

Bitume, the French post-apocalyptic RPG, is pretty good. Like all games designed by Croc, it has a terrible system, but it's really fun to play.

The background story is that the Haley comet passed the earth a little bit too close. This caused natural catastrophes of all kind, but the major and strangest effect was that earth's population suddenly suffered from complete amnesia. Civilization crumbled and new groups appeared influenced by popular culture from that era (cartoons/manga, video cassette covers, magazines...).

The action is located in France where following groups are active:

Amazons: Man-hating females inspired by radical feminism
Brotherhood of the Snake: Followers of a psychotic and technophobe cult vaguely inspired by New Age philosophy and ecologism.
Farmers
Grease-Monkeys: Scroungers
Healers
Hell's Angels
Indians: They are the descendants of the Arab/North African population of France's ghettoes
Kids: Children gangs inspired by popular manga and seitan TV shows
Mercenaries: Guns for hire inspired by Rambo, Chuck Norris, Mad Max and legion of B-movie heroes
Merchants: A greedy bunch
Punks: Punks who mix anarco-psychotism and communism
Skinheads: Royalist skinheads who worship Louis XIV
Sons of Metal: Psychopathic cult inspired by covers of heavy metal discs and cassettes
Vigilantes: Post-apocalyptic cops who worship Judge Dredd and Dirty Harry
Vikings: Croc put vikings in all his games - no exception for Bitume. Anyway, those vikings come from the North, use big trucks, they call drakkars, and they raid settlements
Yankees: Extremist libertarians

Then you have also the Ants. An underground living society. They didn't get affected by the amnesia, but their immune system is extremely weak. Therefore, they are the only group with advanced technology. They trade manufactured products (mainly weapons and vehicles, though they also do artificial insemination for the Amazons) against food and prisoners (guinea pigs) with the other groups.

Last time I played it, it must have been like 14 years ago or so and I don't remember when I read the rulebook the last time, but it was also a long time ago.

To create a character you have to choose a tribe. The tribe will give you bonus and penalties to your stats and skills and it will determine what kind of armor you're allowed to wear. The tribe also determines what advantages/disadvantages you're allowed to take and which you aren't (some also will cost more or less depending on your tribe). Then, you distribute points among your many stats (stats range from 1 to 20). Skills are derived from stats and range from (1 to 100). I don't remember if you can distribute directly some points among skills or not. What is sure, is that you can purchase "advantages" that will give you bonuses to your skills. You can also take "disadvantages" that will give you points to by more "advantages".

As an example you create a guy who has Speed and Precision both at 10. This would give you a Shooting score of 20. To increase this score you purchase the advantage Night Combat (+20 to combat skills during nighttime) and Urban Combat (+20 to combat skills and to stealth when fighting in a constructed environment).

Otherwise, once the character creation is completed, the game isn't that difficult - apart of vehicular combat.

McAusland does Mutant Epoch as a nearly a one man show. I believe there is a paid editor and some of the adventures have been written by other people. But he does all the illustrations. blows my mind.

I do think there are too many modifiers in combat but I made a reference sheet of the modifier page and laminated it that has really sped up play.

haha, nice wrong opinion there. Why would I need more releases for a rules light game like this? Also there is 7 pages of vehicle combat rules in the 20 pages of actual rules. 10 pages of vehicles and customization, so 17 pages of vehicles in a 137 pages rulebook about Mad Max like cinematic post-apocalypse. I want mine to be at least a century or two in the future (long enough for the established order to be up-ended) and for a decent amount of time to pass after the apocalypse (at least 50 years, but quite possibly centuries).

It would be pretty much impossible to translate as there are so many references to French pop-culture from the 1980s/1990s. You'd have to rewrite the game completely and best adapt it to your own country.
>>
>>51162990
>Unfortunately this is just a type up of the text on the cards and not the cards themselves.
I'd actually think that would be better in most cases. If you want to go all out and print on card stock and try to replicate the original cards as closely as possible, this obviously isn't what you're looking for, but I'd image that most people wouldn't go that far. If I were running 7e, I think I'd be more likely to do what most games do and write the powers down on your character sheet (or copy and paste the text onto them). And since they're all already numbered, random generation would be pretty easy.

I'm enjoying the heck out of Mutant Year Zero. Simple D6 based system without the insanely large dice pools one saw in the early versions of Shadow Run for example. My group (with zero rules experience with MYZ) created characters from scratch in 45 minutes and were off and gaming soon there after.

If your are substituting traditional simulationist game play for narrative game play that is certianly newer role playing trend, one lead by degenerate (redundant I know) hipster scum like Dungeon World's Adam Koebel. So if the hipster moniker fits.....

Hey Guys I have a map pack that a few of you may be interested in.

http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/119978/Cityographer-Post-Apocalyptic-City-Map-Icons-Any-Editor?src=hottest_filtered

What I propose is a trade, I need the modern version, Pre Apoc set for this. Found here:

Irrelevant.
>>
>>51185619

I can see both sides on this argument. If the game has sufficient rules to cover game play situations and you are happy writing your own adventures then you don't "need" anything else.

It is relevant because it is difficult to attract new players and/or build a community/following of a "finished" game that no one has ever heard of. A steady stream of new stuff and new adventures keeps the game fresh and excitement up.

Personally I really like having a library of adventures to choose from.

I've got the older version of the Hex & Chit board game of the same name. It's OK, but not exactly 'best in show'. Two Hour Wargames has a 'Reloaded' (2nd Edition) of the game, but I'd love to see the rules to tell if anything has changed enough to make it worth buying. Unfortunately I haven't run across a PDF of those rules anywhere yet. But thanks for sharing the skirmish stuff. It's appreciated.

Which one? There's a 'RPG-esque' version (which I haven't played) that uses minis in a skirmish style / story telling mode. And then there's the hex and chit board games like pic related >>51192244 which I own and have played once or twice. It has a 'campaign' mode, but it seems like it was mainly intended for 'one-off' games.
>>
>>51192523
Maybe thats why Im getting confused, Im mixing up the two versions.

What is each one called?
>>
>>51192548
Here's the annoying part - they're both "All Things Zombie" (ATZ). They both take place in the same fictional setting so they went with the exact same name on both products - which is why I can easily understand the confusion.

What I was looking to do WAS make them like fantasy races, but with subtle twists on them. They are (mostly) the 'stable' mutations of humans after the fall. Have the same cliche aesthetics, mostly.

Dwarves: Value rebuilding old-world machines and firearms. Run the only railroad. Tend to keep useful mutants as slaves. Kinda like the Pitt from Fallout 3.
Halflings: Are coastal/seafaring and live on a town made of hundreds of boats and docks moored together. Have gills behind their ears, ala Waterworld.
Elves: Nature focused. Vehemently tend to reject old-world tech and live isolated in the forest in a huge Treehouse town. Kinda Oasis from FO3.
Orcs: Found in abandoned Government lab vats. Created before the fall to be supersoldiers. Sentient and self-aware. Have small pocket communities.
Tengu: Quite literally just sentient, mutated crows. Gypsy/Jakhit-ish in shadyness and acceptance by most societies.
Sullied: Your straight up mutant with bizarre good and bad mutations.

I want magic to exist, but only in the form of glass-stone shards (no real explanation to them; most think God died with the world and his body burst when entering the atmosphere.) No Vancian shit.

Try the PDF share thread, it may already be listed in one of the savage world troves - the first PDF in the thread has the links to the various troves. Just search on 'Broken Earth' and if that yields nothing, then try the 'Savage Worlds' links and dig in.

Why even do post apocalyptic at this point set it during the apocalypses so that all the crazy hasn't shown up yet.

What kind of weird random encounters you like to add to your game, or your DM added?

One of mine favorite was a tea tables in garish colors and on top of it a defrosted canned turkey. Right in a middle of a desert.

There was a really good thread a while back about 'Tales of the Apocalypse' where various Anons shared 'stories and legends' told by the survivors.

One of my favorites is the 'phone booth of the Apocalypse'.

As for me, I'm currently GM'ing a Mutant Year Zero campaign. The PC's just obtained a map from another stalker. On it is a location marked as "The Talking Trash Heap".

Near the city is the collapsed rubble pile of what was once doubtless an impressive building from the time of the Ancients. Legend has it that if one leaves 3 or more offerings of old electronic salvage, one may ask the trash heap a question. Sometimes the answer is found later written on a piece of scrap. On rare occasions one might receive a direct answer from an odd disembodied and inhuman sounding voice that seems to come from throughout the heap. As far as anyone can recall, all the answers the trash heap has given have been honest and accurate. But not all questions receive answers. And be warned, those that attempt to delve into the trash heap are never ever seen again.

As for me, I've got two options and I can't decide which I want to use.

Option A: The talking trash heap is the voice of a powerful A.I. located in the fortified levels below the wreckage of the building. The A.I. has some still functional sensors, cameras, and some speakers (some damaged which explains the odd inhuman sound to the voice) above ground which it uses to observe and communicate. It also has a very limited number of drones which it uses to explore and collect salvage. But it quickly realized that it would never be able to find / retrieve enough materials to sustain itself much less repair its damaged functions on its own. So it began leaving clues and hints to create the legend and convince survivors to unknowingly assist it.

Continued...
>>
>>51251373

Option B. The talking trash heap is actually a hive mind colony of insects. The largest members are beetles the size of large dogs while others as small as a human finger. Individually the members of the hive are of low intelligence, but collectively when in close proximity the group is extremely intelligent. The insects routinely hide from humans and other large creatures. On the rare occasion when the hive 'speaks' it is insects hidden within the rubble rubbing their appendages together (like crickets) in concert that creates eerily inhuman sounding voice that echos through the pile. So why would a hive of insects collect electronic scrape? Because 'The Hive' has determined that humans have well and truly screwed up the Earth and that they're going to (pardon the pun) 'Bug Out'. To that end they're collecting electronic scrap to build a guidance system for the organic space ship they're currently 'growing' beneath the rubble pile.

This shit is cool. It reminds me of a chapter in Perdido Street Station where what is essentially a giant pile of trash parts in a dump has become sentient, almost like a golem. He has devoted followers that help him grow by adding new components when they can.

>>51251341
Glad you like it. I'm going to loot this hard for campaign 'rumors' and a potential plot hooks.

Anyone take a look at The Gene Hack? I rather like the concept of acquiring better mutations the lower your stats are.

My personal favourite kind of depends on what you're trying to do. If the goal is action and maximum fun, then Road Warrior/Mad Max style adventures sound the most appealing. Larger than life heroes and villains in over-the-top apocalyptic danger.

If we're going for something more grounded and I guess serious, then I'd look for something that's early post-post-apocalypse. Because the idea of civilisation rebuilding itself in the corpse of the old world intrigues me. Sure, everything was shit and we all almost died, but it's getting better. There's just a lot of options for interesting characters and plots in such a setting.

Currently I'm in a magical post-apoc GURPS game set in France. We're using After the End, and it's pretty fun.

I'm looking for a modern zombie RPG based on exploration and travel, although I'm willing to build the system myself if necessary.

I want it to be easy to pick up, because my players have never touched anything but DnD 5th edition. If it has a dungeon crawly feel to it, that might be helpful for easing their transition, but I dunno if such a thing can exist.

Any recommendations? I have no experience with this genre so I'm pretty tempted to just build it myself over the next week or two to do exactly what I want.

Savage Worlds, Broken Earth.

Heres the Savage Worlds Supplement for it, just add Zombies. You'll need the savage worlds corebook.
https://mega.nz/#!RNVUnQgb!exZqqJqQdYQ3NzTk8TmqqMjnKaYJkDtn3PCjCrIX4qo

In addition you may want to use "Dead Reign" from the makers of Rifts for Fluff material and more detailed world setting. As the system is poor at best. I use it for my game.

All Flesh Must Be Eaten is great for ideas and concepts. The mechanics may be more crunchy than what you want, but they're not awful either. There's also the 'End of the World' series that has a Zombie Apoc book that has some good ideas / content as well. (I'm not a fan of their game mechanics.) I think someone posted a link for them further up the thread.

I'm running a Twilight 2000 game soon, and the setup is that the party are part of the US 8th division assaulting through Gdańsk to reach Kaliningrad. I'm planning for the battle of Gdańsk to be partially played out in game (the PCS being a reserve force that enters after the main assault) and it ending with the Soviets using nuclear artillery to shatter and decimate the NATO force, leaving the PCs stranded and in a similar position to the Kalisz starting thing.

What I want to know is; does having the PCs witness the use of nuclear weapons so early in the game set the stakes well, or does it just seem like km blowing my load too early?

You really need to ram it home, during the game before the bomb, mention that they just have to hold out until reinforcements and supplies arrive.

Really ram it home that help us coming.

Then use the bomb to take it all away.

Unsupported? Holyshit, hold up. You're gonna bash Atomic Highway for that and NOT Twilight 2K? I think you gotta do some math, but it's gotta be close to 20 years for Twilight 2000 getting a release.

No, Twilight 2013 is not even close to the same game as 2000.
>>
>>51270038
Twilight 2013 had some pretty great mechanics. I just wish it had all the great sourcebooks that T2k V2 had, and a setting that wasn't complete garbage (though to be fair I think everyone who played T2k13 used T2k's setting).
>>
>>51270038

Twilight 2000 was lavishly supported there is no comparison. Atomic Highway has 2 books. Twilight 2000 has over 20 supplements + adventures.

How post apocalyptic are we talking about?

You could always crank it up with ammo scarcity so people become less trigger happy. In fact most campaigns are improved with a little bit of resource management on the part of the players.
>>
Exactly how toxic is antifreeze? How feasible would it be for a person to develop a tolerance for drinking it diluted without suffering death or crippling brain damage?

>>51274675
If I remember correctly, it crystallizs in your kidneys and basically shreds your renal system. So, pretty fuckin unlikely.

Good methods to avoid everything just turning into sniper combat? Ruins make it far too easy, and the only other easy alternative I see is regular access to armored vehicles, which raises the setting's power level more than I like.

The problem is, even if large caliber bullets are rare, and a rifle with precision manufacturing are rare, it still potentially exists in the setting.
How do I justify a cultural shift that simply results in no one wanting to be a long-range, unseen dickbag?
>>
>>51276198
In Mutant Year Zero, bullets are currency. A lot of the characters go with Slings, Spears, Bows, etc as missile weapons because shooting someone is literally throwing money at your enemies.

I can shoot that asshole, or I can avoid death by dehydration / starvation and buy food. Hmmm.....

Our 2nd game of the campaign the players had an interesting argument. One player want to physically attack some large animals for food while the others were like - "Hell No! Those are huge, we're going to shoot those!" Even the enforcers with them were in favor of shooting first and then closing after their opponents were suitably wounded.
>>
>>51276198

What kind of apoc, how long since the fall?
>>
>>51276327
except when bullets are currency, in addition to be scarce, it simply increases the appeal of taking single, accurate shots.
>>51276693
80 years after a cyberpunk society fell apart due to sun spots deleting all the cryptocurrency and corporate data. So collapse due to riots, food shortages, etc.
>>
>>51267136
As soon as I saw a picture of a girl with long dark hair holding a gun, I knew it would be the edgy scalpel story.
>>
>>51130996
Degenesis

in terms of style and setting nothing even comes close.
It hurt to see it die.
Both times.
>>
>>51276804

Ok. In a very advanced future like that, basic survival skills would be low for your average person. So not a lot of people are going to survive those first few years, or even months.

So you have lose the means of production. Bullets should be rare, especially 80 years on, or at least modern quality bullets, 80 years is sufficient time to begin producing some form of home made low quality production bullets.

Next, Terrain. Are the PCs in Ruins a lot? Good chance a sniper is only going to get a good shot at them from one position, and the PCs will have a rich choice of cover to choose from once the bullets start flying.
>>
>>51276198

Modern guns and ammo are valuable pre collapse relics rare but not unheard of or never seen Treat as magic items.

Most of the world is equipped with bows, crossbows and blackpowder muzzle loaders being the higher end of common reproducible tech.

Keeping most of the world at early to mid 19th century tech level makes melee combat still relevant and common whilst elevating pre-collapse weaponry to being the weapon ultimate power and status symbol.
