Stars Without Number
>>
traveler is my personal favorite

>become hardened space veteran explorer
>roll up character's history, how they got there, little disadvantages they have, etc.
character creation is one of the most fun parts desu
>explore massive galaxy
>fun combat
>tons of rp potential
rules aren't terribly weighty, though character creation has a lot of stuff to do.

Can you tell me more about that system?

GURPS
That was joke. Try Star Wars D20 if you want something really simple and accessible. Though it maybe too simple for many.

It's based of a very rules heavy d6 game called Traveller, which has had several iterations since 1977. Instead of their being the infamous character life path generation (in which you could strait up die in 1e), you get to pick a series of background packages and a career: psychic, Warrior or specialist.

Adam Koebel GMing Rollplay Swan Song is a pretty interesting series if you want to check out what it looks like.

Try the fantasy flight's Star Wars games.

It uses a werid special dice, but it's fairly simple.

Mongoose Traveller 2nd edition.

There have been various editions of Traveller, and classic Traveller allowed you to die in ALL of its editions so don't just give an ambiguous "1e".

Star Without Number is a bland cross between OD&D and classic Traveller with modern conventions placed, and the good parts of each of the things it tries to mash together taken out. For example: character creation is not near-instant in SWN unlike OD&D, nor does it have the robust and unique, but simple, lifepath system for genning characters. SWN also uses classes like D&D, which automatically makes it more restrictive than Traveller, but without understanding why D&D HAD classes (easily distinguishable roles for a dungeon crawling experience) so it shares none of the benefits of classes. On top of that in Stars Without Number the Warrior is only useful if you run a combat heavy game making your safer choices for who you want to be end up just going for the setting specific Psychic or the Expert class.

Also, Traveller is not rules heavy.

SLA Industries, best setting, simple system roll 2d10 add modifiers and get over ten.

Dungeons and Dragons

If you're coming from a DnD background SWN is pretty easy to pick up and play as long as you actually read the book.

I had one of my favourite campaigns playing it. but something like Traveller is more open and has a lot more online content available.

The weird special dice actually serve a good purpose, too. Rolls in FFSW have 3 axes: success/failure, advantage/threat, and triumph/despair. Way more interesting in play than the binary pass/fail of many other games.

There are actually a fair number of free dice rollers that work for the purpose of the game, and even a plugin for the roll20 api for it, so you don't necessarily need to buy the physical dice.

I'm pretty sure SWN is B/X based, not OD&D. Otherwise pretty spot on analysis.

I've only ever seen one system that did class-based science fiction in a way I thought worked well, and that was Starships and Spacemen, a Star Trek system where you department determined your class, and came with special rules for how things worked for you. Like if you were on the Security team you can phaser dudes and it's cool, but if you're in the Science department you're going to need to explain to the higher ups what you were doing when you phasered that guy, because you weren't trained for that and it's not your job.

So, instead of a single binary result, you have 3 binary results - hmmm, that sounds like a real improvement!
Seriously, tho: this 'binary results' meme needs to die. You think you sound sophisticated, but you ain't....
Reality is really black and white, get over it.

classic west end games' d6 system - easy and cinematic and adaptable.
