Since July 2016 AoS got points, 40K got Genestealers Cults, Thousand Sons, Traitor Legions rules.
I'd say the AoS points thingy brought back some players, lots of people got GSC since they're new, look cool, and are apparently decent, and Traitor Legions sold very well to all the Chaosfags.
Also the bandwagoner factor for 40K, some just outright buy the new army before selling it on ebay if it's not the new meta (gods their tears were delicious for the TSons, and I'm a Tsons player.)

You can buy stocks that didn't increase at all in the past year and still yield more return than GW does. Also if you look at GW's entire history you'll notice they're not even at their all time highest stock value.

That, and since Kirby got out of the big chair and Rountree stepped in, the company has seemed less... cuntish. They respond more positively and more openly to fan behavior. At least on some of their model lines, they seem to have taken some of the criticism to heart. Releases are coming faster; 40k, for good or for ill, isn't completely stagnant; beloved-but-ignored products and content are seeing a new bloom. Specialist games are back!

They're still milking children and whales, they're just being nice about it for the first time in something like 15 years. That counts for something.
