There are actually a lot of sources that indicate various kinds of role playing, from free-form to tabletop to LARP, can be very effective methods of therapy.

My friend is doing his psychology master's thesis on this topic, it is really quite interesting.
>>
>>51111246
I don't think rolling for it will fix my lack of initiative.

>>51111246
They better be GMing. If I'm the one paying them AND I have to GM, there's clearly something amiss.

When I was younger, I saw a few shrinks over a period of time about anger issues. The second one I visited, when I think I was between 7 and 9, was specifically a social worker. Unfortunately, whatever issues I happened to have with anger were generally far between, and I didn't have many friends at that time, so we almost never had anything to talk about. I think she sometimes thought I was keeping things from her, but honestly most of the time I just didn't have anything to say. After a few sessions of "nothing really happened today," she must have gotten tired, because she started pulling out her special board game.

The board looked a bit like the game of LIFE, with branching paths and things like that, but there wasn't an obvious goal, just loops. Certain regions of the map had been colored and decorated with various emotions: there was a blue region labeled SAD showing crying people or faces, a red one labeled ANGRY with red-faced people, and so on: I'm sure there were at least two or three more emotions listed, including probably HAPPY, but I don't remember them as well. I think those were the emotions she may have been most interested in.

The goal of the game, as far as I could remember, was that you would travel around the board and land on the spaces of various emotions. If you landed on a HAPPY space, you would describe something that happened to you recently that had made you HAPPY. I think the goal may have been to visit all the regions and describe something for each, but I remember getting that far only a few times.

Googling "emotions board game" seems to pull up quite a few of them.
>>
>>51112237
Yes. Unsurprisingly most of them are about how roleplaying teaches those on the autistic spectrum how to better socialize.
>>
>>51112540
This post makes me so confused. You know you can't be "taught" autism, right? What's "DnD Brain Damage"? Sanity damage is mostly a variant rule, and as far as I know nobody calls it that. What does any of it have to do with magical realms? I feel like you're an alien trying to mimic /tg/ without knowing what any of it means.

D&D is Gateway /tg/ gaming. Of course they're going to suggest that, especially if it's 5e. Unless they're planning on using something for a specific therapeutic purpose, like Shock: Human Contact, they're going to default to D&D.
>>
>>51112593
The fact that a prolific game with severe design flaws is seen as what tabletop games do as normal, and anyone who strays from these rules is seen as the bad guy.

Do you have any idea how much shit I got from autistic cunts who have a problem with 3 or 5 level base classes in 3e?

Wait, so you're just trying to turn this thread into another "fuck D&D" thread? Don't we have enough of those? That's what "what system should I play" threads and system wars threads are for. Actually most of them are about helping people deal with trauma, helping people with anxiety how to cope when they are having panic attacks, and helping those with depression remain grounded when they feel like they are having negative thoughts.

Literally none of the work with roleplaying and therapy that I have heard of involves "teaching autistic people social skills"

While I know that some therapists engage in tabletop rpgs with their pacients, "insisting" is a new one.

That said, there is a correlation. My GM is a psychologist, and he identifies things from their players in their characters. It's hard to explain without being there, but it works.

I once planned to develop a test based on cards with junguian archetypes and roleplaying, but life happened.

>>51112237
Roleplaying (not tabletop, more like larping) is already a common method in brazilian social psychology.

>>51113266
Ouch.

>>51113996
There's not really a "typical" one, but I recommend watching movies like:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQht2yOX9Js
The power of the bond between therapist and pacient is wonderfully demonstrated here. One does not remain neutral in front of the pacient, one identifies and uses his own feelings as to further enable the pacient to be himself.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1iev0zph3o
This series shows as every pacient is unique, and the therapist is human.

No, but you can learn/be taught habits that mimic the symptoms of autism.

I, personally, have a bad habit of looking at different things in a room while taking to someone because I'm able to hold a conversation without looking people in the eyes (I personally find it really creepy). So, a therapist I was talking too about some minor stress-related depression I was having thought that I might have some mild form autism because I was "avoiding eye contact" when, in fact, I was actually just interested in what the books he had on his bookshelf.

Fix'd. I do it all the time, especially things like read all the book spines in a room while engaged in conversation. It's also why I pace on the phone -- it focuses me.

Go inna woods. Start anew. Or get a farm.

Good old fashion hard labor that your life depends on far more closely than just "don't get paid" - I'm talking Stardew Valley this shit. So living in modern society and it's constant easy-access pleasures and go Amish. If your crops don't grow you starve. Enjoy.

That should occupy the shit out of your time.

This is why I want to move to Alaska so bad. I have chronic suicidal depression.

Either all of the hard labor needed for basic survival will physically and psychologically whip me into shape and I can at least feel pride in myself, even if I am never truly content (let alone happy).

Or, the elements/some wild predator will kill me off and my family can at least say I died living my dream and be some what proud of me. Instead of living in shame by being forced to endure my current presence, or the fact that I committed suicide.

For me, personally, it's a win win situation.

All my Therapist/patient sessions from 15 years ago boiled down to
"How does that make you feel?" on fucking loop.

"I want to deck [insert my local guild approved bully]..."
>"How does that make you feel?"
"Angry, just angry..."
>"Well, how does that make you feel?"
"Upset, I mean I just tol-"
>"How does that make you feel?"...

It's quite possible therapy changed over the last 15 years, but for me, it was this infuriating loop of vague fucking platitudes that boiled down to asking 'how I felt' about a subject.
>>
>>51111246
I don't go to therapists and psychologists anymore. For every good one there's five more that want to put you on have a hundred different medicines and piss all over your medical record with mental illnesses you don't have.

I do no criticize the lack of joy, or attempts to seek it. I criticize the lack of purpose. There might be some overlap between the two, but they are not necessarily the same thing. You can have purpose without joy or joy without purpose.
>>
>>51124522
>purpose
>without joy

How? A dead-end job that kills you inside even more than NEETdom would isn't "purpose," it's drudgery.
>>
>>51124522
I do have a purpose, it's not like I am nonfunctioning. But I'm just going through the motions like a high functioning autist mimicking normal behaviors.
And I know that I'm not autist myself because I remember a time it wasn't so.
>>
>>51119406
It depends, really. Some people avoid eye contact because they're scared, others (also some cultures) just don't do it. And so on.
>>
>>51124596
There's many motivators besides joy. Pride, hate, sense of duty, greed. We can each attune to what's attainable and best suited for us.

Yeah, there's a ton of those. Played a couple at school counseling sessions after a divorce.
>>
>>51124308
You know, I've had to do several forced therapy sessions over the last couple of years, and they've never come to that at all.

The recent ones have been voluntary, and the fact that the guy is great is likely the only reason I'm still going.
>>
>>51124775
Like most other specialist jobs, it's more complicated then it seems. For one thing, you have to actually give a shit about the people you're talking about.

For another, you need a decent amount of schooling to have any real credit, and you have to actually be able to help the people you're working with. It's not just about talking, you have to figure out what they're talking about, and how to help them with the issues.
>>
Therapy is a shit pit when you've got a lazy eyed Indian who barely speaks English.

Mother fucker tries to tell me not to play card games and changes my medication every other week.
>>
>>51124775
>>51124940
If you're a good smooth talker however, there's a bunch of other jobs that basically amount to your description like coaching wich is just making your whole job of doing maïeutic routines.
They are more or less alternative but if you know how to market yourself you'll get clients as well.

Having tried quite a few shrinks and knowing a coach and hypnotist (my dad and an uncle) I can tell you a good shrink has something more. A bad shrink in't much more than a smoothtalker and the others may or may not be legit but when you know how the gimmick works, you can do all the work yourself.

Now this is stupid. Most psy meds take couple weeks before the full effect kicks in and the effectiveness can be judged. "lazy eyed" and "barely speaks English" is about as much of a distinguishing feature as black hair are.
