What system has the best combat mechanics?

Me and a couple of friends want to play just a series of Battles, leveling up over time, have interesting progression and interesting battles.

D&D 4e, with Dungeon Delve. 30 small adventures, one for each level, consisting of a couple fights each.

For necessary/recommended fixes see the 4e general when it rolls around again.

In broader terms, the two systems I hear mentioned a lot for having fantastic combat systems are Legends of the Wulin and Song of Swords. They're both extremely proficient at what they do, even if what they're aiming for is completely different.

Legends of the Wulin is a Wuxia game with amazing rules for high flying, over the top action while Song of Swords is a much more grounded, realistic experience with a lot of detail, granularity and lethality.

GURPS and Savage, by the sheer virtue of providing crunch for just about anything that happens in the combat, while also being very simple and straightforward if you want to keep it just fast.

You know, every time I see fanart of Viconia that isn't porn she's shown with a mace or warhammer or something. But her Strength and Constitution are terrible for a frontline fighter (10 and 8, respectively), while meanwhile she has a 19 Dexterity.

She's a sling girl, not a melee girl.

For combat, I'm pretty sure a dagger is always good to have. You know, cutting ropes, or meat.

Best tactical system where there are many fun and viable choices for a lot of builds.

The grappling rules are streamlined and things of beauty.

Riddle of steel if you want lots of DF-style action. 4th ed. if you want to simulate World of Warcraft-type leveling. GURPs is really only for if you need to run a very specific setting or scenario and nothing else has mechanics for both spaceships and magical girls and worldwide plagues at the same time.

Yes, but there are a shitton of items that raise your strength to 18+, some of them even usable by non-fighters (that one mace you can buy in the copper coronet comes to buy). full plate mail + 19 dex + 70% MR = who needs hitpoints if nothing is gonna hit you anyway.

Clerics can't use daggers in combat. I'm pretty sure they can use daggers for other things.

I really enjoy Savage Worlds. The trick system is really versatile for having combat beyond "I stab it." You can do stuff like toss a platter like a frisbee or throw sand in your enemies face with a simple mechanic that matches the fluff to good crunch.
