Well I'm glad you asked! WebDM is basically the only other pair of decent human beings with lots of views, so hit them up and see how they do! Or to spice things up, make a list of D&D youtubers, roll 4d6 down the line, and watch the videos in that order to spice things up at the table! Like, subscribe, and leave some comments in the doobleedoo.

Thats it. I a total newfag in here that never played DnD or tabletop RP at all in his whole life. Now thats gonna change.
I have a roll20 account and I am singned in a campaing (but didnt play our first session yet)but I really want to feel what is like to play in real life with my friends.
I already have two friends (maybe three) that are interesed in playing (one of them already made a character) and I am totally willing to be DM. But there is one problem: if I homebrew a campaign with 0 experience I know it is totally going to suck.
So do you have any pdf with a easy-for-begginers campaign? Preferible a one shot or something that isnt that many sessions.
>>
>>51104349
>if I homebrew a campaign with 0 experience I know it is totally going to suck.
Tip: If your players also have 0 experience, they won't know.
>>
>>51104314
Nah I was able to find it still

So one of my players is dealing with some life shit out of the game and its causing him to overreact to in character arguments between the PC's.

Is retconing events that happen in a session ever a good idea? Or should I leave events how they ended up despite knowing that OOC factors played a big part in some of the decision making that ended the last session?
>>
>>51104367
Yeah I know. But I want thwm to have fun in his first time. I want to make sure it is fun for everyone

Public Service Announcement:

If you see this book, do NOT buy it. It's written by someone whose knowledge of 5e consists of a half-page crib sheet written in a mix of classic Greek and Rorschach tests.

All the feats are either
A) Meh (get one of the fighter fighting styles)
B) Wildly overpowered (+3 Channel Divinity per day)
C) Completely non-functional ("You don't die until you reach negative HP equal con + level" in a system where you don't die until you fail 3 death saves or are dealt your max HP worth of damage while already at 0 hp).

If you want to see them, pirate it. For the love of all that's holy, don't pay money for the damn thing.
>>
>>51104349
just remember to tell your players that dnd is not a game to win or lose, it's a story to tell
>>
>>51104367
>>51104385

As a fellow new DM I can vouch for this. Play your first few games with people you are comfortable with and are about as new as you.

They will have fun.

If you do want to have a small frame work to work with, I hate to go full circle, but watch Matt Colville's "Running the Game" series. Run his Goblins kidnapping the blacksmiths daughter thing that he describes in that video and if you want, change it up a smidge to make it more you. In my experience, new players wont get through more than 3 combats in a single session unless you have a whole lot of time.

I feel like with any other community, Matt's advice would be obvious: take what worked from 4e (and there's a lot of it) to enrich your 5e.

But 5eg has such a hate boner for 4e that they're blind to it.

>>
>>51104591
I mean, that's shitty, but can one person feasibly make enough fake accounts to do anything other than annoy and/or minorly inconvenience another channel owner?
>>
>>51104545
I was actually planning on pulling some 4e feats up into 5e since 5e has a dearth of feats still compared to all of the other character options.
>>
>>51104412
+3 channel divinity wouldn't be overpowered IMO, since the limits on abilities are too strict already. What does overpowered even mean in the context of a cooperative make believe game?
>>
>>51104427
>>51104407
Thanks guys. I will look those up. This feels pretty exciting
>>
>>51104521
Avoid every one of his video, the guy has a smarmy smugness and has a "only my way is the right way" attitude.
He trolled, belittled and insulted a bunch of rpg youtubers into quitting, made a fake apology video that he has since taken down, and conducted a one-sided interview with Matt Mercer.

His critiques of Acq Inc and Critical Role basically boil down to "this wouldn't how I would run things therefore it's shit" and "it must serious roleplay all the time therefore they are shit".
>>
>>51104602
it's the thought that counts. he also deleted his apology video so that new viewers cant figure out the shit he pulled

he's a fucking loser
>>
>>51104561
Here, mate
>>51104612
How did hanging out with him go?
>>
Since we're slagging off shitty content creators:

Fuck Encounter Roleplay.

Why the fuck a dude who's entire schtick is that no one gives a fuck about rules or character sheets actually makes videos about "How to play D&D" and critiquing homebrew races/classes and shit, I have no fucking idea.
>>
>>51104620
never heard of him
>>
>>51104605
Making select characters who take certain things significantly more powerful than other characters who are built with otherwise sensible options. Especially when the power gap is big enough as to where the over powered character in question is either never challenged by what the GM throws at them or they are challenged by what the GM throws at them whereas everyone else just gets destroyed by it.
>>
>>51104612
>and conducted a one-sided interview with Matt Mercer.
Oh god that cringy fucking editing Matt's sound-clips into an "interview".

Funny story, when I actually had Matt on my show, I posted a promo on Facebook and at least 5 or 6 responses I got were "Is this for real, or something shitty like that fake interview Dawnforged did?"

And THEN, the dude actually had the balls to ask me on Twitter if I could convince Matt to do a real interview with him.
>>
>>51104561
Ask him why he trolled, belittled and insulted other people.

The fact you don't know about it makes it worse.
>>
>>51104630
Fuckin' thank god. I cannot stand the dude. He represents everything I think is shitty about content creators/streamers, and somehow pulls in massive viewers & money doing it.

So anyways, in not youtube drama news, Anything interesting happen in your last session? I think I broke my Sorc, threw a Flail Snail at the party, and he still tried to be Blasty McBlasterson, aster I had an NPC tell the party that Flail Snail shells are very valuable because of their magic reflective properties.

To be fair, he said hordes of goblins and bugbears were too easy for the group.
>>
>>51104602
Yes, he's still doing it. He's made some trolling in the comments saying other youtubers are shit and shilling his own channel and website.
>>
>>51104634
I see, and I guess I agree. I don't really think a cleric having three more uses of channel divinity would break anything, but attaching it on a feat tax so that people who don't know about it are less powerful would be bad.

Really, that's one of the major problems with sharpshooter and crossbow expert.
>>
>>51104610
I remember when I first started DMing, its the most fun I had had in a long time. You should be excited
>>
>>51104678

They should have some kind of process for dealing with feats that end up being feat taxes, like just rolling them into base classes.
>>
>>51104665
I started a new campaign for my group. Two rogues and a monk. The rogues are really all about running a heist campaign, and the monk is a devout Buddhist who refuses to steal anything, but tags along because the rogues are planning to steal from the people who murdered his temple, and he might get some info from them.
>>
>>51104716
I've wanted to run a heist campaign, it seems like a good way to let the that guys be edgy but at the same time not murder hobos since I'm assuming going in guns blazing to steal some high security shit will probably not go well.
>>
>>51104644

He forced a bunch of people to quit YouTube by insulting them so much that they decided it was just better to quit.

He got caught out on this, said all of that wasn't him but his sick brother's doing or a fan's doing. Then got caught out on that. He then made a crocodile-teared apology video that he since taken that down. Because new fans shouldn't see that.

He's since gone back to his old ways. He keeps saying all other youtubers are shit compared to him, doesn't do what he does and that you should go to his channel and website instead.

So, I'm not sure if you're aware of this or not, but EVERYONE in the RPG industry & community is a rabid SJW. Every. Fucking. One.

It's not like it is here on 4chan, out in the real world. I'm still to this day finding new people that have blocked me that I've never even met or interacted with, all because one time I told Greg Tito that the new Baldur's Gate expansion wasn't written very well, and some (apparently) trans person got into an argument saying I only hated Amber Scott's work because she was a woman.

Hell, Wil Wheaton recently posted a block list that I'm apparently on.

I can't say shit on social media about anything, or I'll get completely blacklisted by the entire industry.
>>
>>51104934
Yea, I'm just disappointing with the available character options in 5e in general, and adding feats seems like a simple way to give people a lot more options, even if most people would only consider taking a couple feats anyway.

Since 4e has a lot of them it shouldn't be that hard to take some of the feats there and apply them to 5e. If I ever get around to it I'll definitley post the list here and ask for feedback, maybe even ask people to run stuff with them to actually see if they work properly in practice.
>>
>>51105414

Alright so the Character Builder for 4E: If you're lucky, you might find one of the old torrents with it, but bear in mind that it only had content up to a certain point, because after like, June 2011 they went 100% web-based and dropped support for it.

But outside of those old 4E package torrents, it probably doesn't exist.

Did I make a bad call /tg/?

My group of PC's just got out of the Underdark after having to go investigate it based upon rumors of spores that made miners go mad. They killed the cause and all was well and good.
Upon returning to turn in their information and get paid, one of them (CN Elf Rogue in a party full of CG's and LG's) decides to leave and try to head back into the Underdark via the city's mine. He sneaks in and finds the entrance that they blew into the wall has caved in. He gets mad and then kills the first guard he sees. The party seemed fed up, and he admitted to them using message that he killed an innocent man for no reason. He had several opportunities to break free and either couldn't make the DC, or just chose to taunt the guards instead.
He was hanged and nobody else seems to mind, and the player says they have no want to roll up a new character, because they were too attached to the old one. But nobody wants to revive him, and his body and gear was taken by the city because he murdered a guard with a sword LITERALLY made of darkness.
>>

Yes.

Their solution to literally everything seems to be "Call this person a racist/bigot/etc. and then block them so they can never respond and also put them on a block list so everyone who subscribes to it will automatically block them without ever knowing who they are or what they did to deserve it."

You know that episode of Black Mirror? Yeah, the thing is, everyone watched it, but no one internalized the message.

No, decisions have repercussions, he went chaotic stupid, and got burnt for it. If you really want, you could give him a high difficulty side arc as he tries to escape hell, but it'd have to be the sort of thing where only exceptionally clever thinking gets him free.

If you do do that, do it at a separate time from the rest of the group, or get their okay to waste all their time with this story.

Making every story "inclussive" takes away a lot of the drama. A major part of interaction is hate based, if you take that away, PCs lose a lot of the driving force in their stories.

Peaceful coexistence is all well & good for a real world goal, but it makes for an incredibly dull story.

Not that I've read, clerics can make mines with their spells. And there are rules for explosives. >>
>>51105539
An anecdote: I rolled up a paladin for a quick campaign a while back, and for this game, knowing that it wouldn't be very story-driven, I was more concerned with the mechanics of the character than the character itself. On a whim, I thought I'd make them female, and thought nothing of it. But even though they were pretty butch, their sex immediately changed the way certain NPCs and PCs treated her, because it was that kind of world. Sometimes she was treated favorably, sometimes unfavorably, and that was a cause of tension. A tension that would've been lost in a world of perfectly beige cylindrical equality.

A friend of mine has pic related, they are pretty satisfying to roll in a cardboard rolling box, but are painful to listen to when rolled on glass and they leave dents in wood, so over all I'm not sure if they were worth the extra money. I personally have difficulty justifying spending more than 10 dollars on 7 dice.

One of my players has a set of Game Science dice and if anything he rolls consistently worse than everyone else. So my guess is that my other players lucked out with unbalanced chessex stuff that just happened to favor higher numbers.

With the only exception that charisma and persuasion are one of the few things the player himself directly influences

If you can't come up with something just say in third person that your char convinced the target but a half assed attempt can ruin the atmosphere

Guard: I won't let your through , order of my Lord!
Bard (nat20): Please!
Guard: Ok

Need some third party evaluation on good GM/bad GM:

>my character is a charlatan, has second identity as a minor noble in Waterdeep
>claims being such to a lord and lady of another city
>"I know nobles in Waterdeep, you're not one of them"

>is a Lolth worshipper but successfully persuades gate guards of surface drow city that he is a Vhaeraun worshipper
>meets with the leader of the city
>"I can smell Lolth on you"
>"no, I'm Vhaeraun all the way"
>no persuasion/deception checks involved

>"I throw my dagger at the hag"
>GM has my character run up to her and stab the hag instead because it's the final blow and it was cooler in her mind to stab rather than throw

She's pretty good on most stuff, but considering my character is built around pretending to be someone other than he is, I feel like I can't get away with anything.

>unbalanced chessex stuff
It's pretty simple to check dice for balance fyi. You just need warm water in a cup with enough salt (doesn't have to be table salt, epsom salts work fine) so the die will float. Then you can plop it in and see what number comes up on top. Give it a poke to upset the die and see what number comes up again. Do this a couple times and it will be pretty obvious if the die always returns to the same number (unbalanced) or not (balanced).
>>
>>51106046
I have difficulty justifying it too, but it feels so basic using cheap plastic stuff for whatever reason.

But the price gap between the basics and the metal ones is so drastic. Considering it's just a lump of metal, you'd think you could find some mid-range options at £20 or so.

Might just get a metal d20 and keep to plastic for the rest. I do like the look of those dwarven ones, I saw them while browsing around.

I have a mild craving for others to look at my dice and be like "those are cool". I feel it lends credibility.

I think about the last half hour of a long session should be somewhat mutable. People are rarely on the top of their game, so that most stupid decisions happen then.

Outside of that, it can be ok, if used rarely. If your player is prone to overreactions due to outside factors, rather call him out on it, give him a moment to collect himself and change his approach then (Do you really want to do that?).

Overusing it for one player too much will come off as playing favorites and harm the experience in the long run

Really its GWM that makes you a melee monster that does all the damages. The choice you need to make is if you want to invest another two feats to maximize Polearm usage because getting Sentinel and PAM are fucking amazing.A guy with just GWM could just about match you in battle AND do things like max out Str and grab feats like Alertness Lucky or Resilient [Wis]. Both paths work just fine and you can add in Battlemaster Sharpshooters as the third major killer Fighter

Can someone proofread this for me? in my setting, gnomes went too far trying to manipulate processed magic crystals (radiation) and an accident destroyed their city and turned all survivors into ratlings, killing hundreds of dwarven ambassadors and leaving them exposed to other warmongering races

“Westington Schurtz, once the proud gnomish chief scientist, laid chained wrist, ankles and snout to the floor of Veterum´s grand hall. The ambassadors were led into the room, cuffed, As the high executioner sharpened his axe and Lord Ygdramar dictated the sentence of a whole race“
>>
>>51106228
The "laid chained wrist" bit doesn't make much sense. Could be "laid on the floor with wrists, ankles, and snout chained" or "lay chained by his wrists, ankles and snout to the floor".

"As" following "cuffed" doesn't need capitals.
Would for readability add a comma after "axe".

She did also have a dragon fly in and kill someone who was trying to burn a forest down because she didn't want to work around it. I found it slightly jarring, even if he was being That Guy.

But yeah, she's new to being on the other side of the table so I'm not too bothered unless it gets really crazy later on.

>• You ignore the loading quality of crossbows with which you are proficient.
This means I can ignore
>Loading. Because of the time required to load this weapon, you can fire only one piece of ammunition from it when you use an action, bonus action, or reaction to fire it, regardless of the number of attacks you can normally make
, which means I'm not limited to firing only one piece of ammunition per action/bonus/reaction used. More importantly, it means I can ignore "because of the time required to load this weapon", ie, loading is now either instantaneous or no longer problematic when I'm attacking.
>Ammunition. You can use a weapon that has the ammunition property to make a ranged attack only if you have ammunition to fire from the weapon. Each time you attack with the weapon, you expend one piece of ammunition. Drawing the ammunition from a quiver, case, or other container is part of the attack. At the end of the battle, you can recover half your expended ammunition by taking a minute to search the battlefield. If you use a weapon that has the ammunition property to make a melee attack, you treat the weapon as an improvised weapon (see "Improvised Weapons" later in the section). A sling must be loaded to deal any damage when used in this way.
This explicitly says that loading ammunition into my crossbow (drawing the bolt from a quiver) is done as part of the attack. Since the hand crossbow isn't two-handed, I should be able to make an attack with it using only one hand. That attack includes the loading. As if that wasn't enough, the hand crossbow is explicitly a light weapon, meant to be used with another weapon in the other hand.

What I mean is, I don't see why I can't have a shield in one hand and a hand crossbow in the other. I should be able to load the hand crossbow using just the hand it is in. It doesn't make much sense irl, I agree, but rule-wise it should work.
>>
>>51106383
You're absolutely right, you can have a shield in one hand and a hand crossbow in the other. But you can't several times with a hand crossbow anyway. If you use your action and your bonus action to shoot, then that's two separate attack actions. You still only fire one bolt per attack.
>>
>>51106143
nah. without loading crossbows behave like a bow, you're assumed to automatically load it when you fire it. so his hand crossbow would behave like a bow except it only requires one hand

Are you the DM?

If so, just look around until you find a homebrew race that works for you. If you arent the DM, do the same and run it by them.

You'd be right, 5e is more about guidelines with basic rules to follow and the rest is up to the DM to create.

Why is everything that isnt the equivalent of /pol/ jerking itself off automatically flagged as SJW or pandering? Cant it just be that one person`s worlview should not restrict what kind of character`s that can exist that others might enjoy in a make-believe fantasy game?

The player's a dick, but you failed to make the situation interesting even if you didn't want to do a bullshit turn them to your side moment.

In the Elemental Evil campaign I had a player roll a nat 20 and "turn" Aerisi over to their side. I just then had her stab them in the back later when they killed the earth prince because the players were thinking with their dicks. Give agency and motivations to NPCs instead of just getting pissy.

>>51106068
>First two.
She might have a reason for those two specific NPCs, try asking her if there is an in-world reason why those two people could see through you without you making a check. If there is one, great! Keep on playing and avoid those two NPCs while doing your charlatan business.
If there is no reason, try to explain that your character is built around a specific concept and the way she is handling it is shutting that concept down,

>Last one
Fuuuck thats annoying. Describing actions should follow and build upon previous descriptions, not overwrite them. If it happens once, sure. If its repeated, talk it out.

in both issues. If talking it out does not work, consider leaving, or switching character for the first two.

>>51106333

Ive also done full Polearm using Paladin and its great. You kind of get around worrying about whether you should have taken a Resilient feat since your Cha+ to Saves helps cover you. The only thing that can keep up with you in damage is another character with basically the same build be it a Fighter Barb or other Paladin

>>
>>51107395
Honestly that's why I use animate objects with vague orders like "kill anything I don't like."

It's more reliable than animate dead, and it really pushes the point that the party should give me the biggest share of the loot in case one of these days the animated swords start looking at them funny.
>>
>>51107391

When you go Polearm your going all the way even if you need to wait a while to fully come online.A V.Human could have all the feats he needs by lv8 then spend the rest of his career pumping Str/Cha. A plain old Two-handed GWM guy with a Greatsword just maxes out his damage earlier then gets utility feats.

I think they are about balanced out but if your rolling stats you could get going an ASI earlier or so

What level NPC built as a PC is appropriate to throw at a party of 6 level 8 adventurers? I want a BBEG of a thing I'm doing to be an Oathbreaker Paladin and I can't find guidelines for this. Also, how can I make him scary? (he's already going to be supported by undead).

>>
>>51107551
I'd use a same level PC to get the general gist of what types of things he can do, but otherwise tool it up like a fight. In general with these kind of key fights I always go above what I can expect players to handle. I find its easier to pull a punch than to pull something out of my ass if they look set to flatten someone in a round because of a bunch of 20s or an unexpected plan.

>>51107553
Nope. If you roll a nat 20 on a skill check and the GM starts going off on how you now read minds and see through walls its your responsibility as a player to remind him that the PHB explicitly states that is not a rule

Can you guys help me balance a cursed armor?

It's an armor that raises your strenth by 1 after you use a melee attack (only once per turn, max strength remains 20). It resets after you don't make a melee attack for 1 minute.

The cursed effect would be that it eats hp at the end of your turn if you make a melee attack. What amount of hp would be suitable for lvl 5 characters? It needs to be high enough for them to want to get rid of the armor, but not so high that they can't get through one encounter. I'm thinking 4 hp?

It's nothing like Slayer. Just because of the "power strike" stuff, doesn't make it Battlemaster. Half the manuevers list are literally 4e Fighter/Warlord powers.

I should have said it's literally 4e's Warlord but significantly watered down and unable to heal. It still has a lot of the positioning powers and team helping powers.
>>
>>51107860
Have it "drink blood" (take away 1 HD) the first time between short rests a melee attack is used. At the same moment Str is increased.

Is it supposed to be increased only once or every time?
>>
>>51107772
It would seem that the elements that were removed or softened were the elements that your friends didn't like. Why should it surprise you they like the rest?

Only on tg is something all shit. In the rest of the world there tends to be things people like about a system and things they don't. Liking a system tends to depend on how that adds up, with a few red line fail points here and there.
>>
>>51107891
>I should have said it's literally 4e's Warlord but significantly watered down and unable to heal.
In 4e we called those fighters. Or rogues now that I think about it.
>>
>>51107902

I'm saying all that was removed was the "Card game" formatting of the books. Mechanically it's still very much the same. The reasons they gave for hating 4e weren't changed in 5e.
>>
>>51107882
>>51107894
Once per turn. We have to melee characters with str 16, so they can get it to 20 in 4 turns in a single combat encounter.

Losing a hit die per encounter seems more fair. I might even make it 2 hit dice, because we have a lot of days with no or a few combats, and I don't want it to be a beneficial item.
>>
> people pretend Purple Dragon Knight doesn't exist
Is it that bad?
>>
>>51107922
I still think there were some pretty big key departures, like how 4e was clearly designed to be played on a tactical map. 4e was also heavily in need of being pruned back, like 3e was. They started that in 4eE.

But you can definitely see the design choices in 5e being heavily influenced by what they learned in 4e.

In the end I'm glad we've got 5e. I think it did a pretty good job of taking the good parts from 4e and PF style design. Dragged back in the "REAL DnD" crowd but it's still got that good 4e shit in there.
>>
>>51107986
If it had maneuvers as well I might dare to call it a poor man's warlord. As it is it's an embarrassment.
>>
>>51107985
What's the point of increasing it in bits? Just subtract HD, give Str, that's it. It's not like +1 Str is actually in any way useful unless your Strength score is odd.

You could make it a worse version of the Belt of Giant Strength: temporarily increase Strength up to a certain point (say 18) in exchange for HD
>>
>>51107886
>It's nothing like Slayer. Just because of the "power strike" stuff, doesn't make it Battlemaster.

Yes.

Yes it fucking does. The options for powerstrike are basically on par with the martial dice it gets. They are even used in similar ways. They also share the role of the "striker".

There's like 2 shitty throwaway abilities that can be considered warlord-esque.
>>
>>51108026
Except Battlemaster isn't. All the Slayer can do is Power Strike. I think it also gets a weapon specific boost when power striking later.

The Slayer was clearly, at first, re-imagined into the Champion. Whereas the Battlemaster is more akin to what 4e later called the "Weaponmaster" Fighter. Or the basic Fighter. Almost all the Battlemaster Manuevers are pulled from the Weaponmaster power list with one or two from Warlord.
>>
>>51108026
Battlemaster is a clear evolution (well, more of a descendant) of the playtest Fighter from Next, which in turn was a way to make a flexible 4E-like Fighter with options but without powers.
>>
>>51108017
The +1 str stacks up to 20. If they'll only lose 1 hd per combat encounter, the item might be very useful in days when there's only 1 or 2 combat encounters, because the single hit die lost can be regained before there's any danger of exhaustion.
>>
>>51108105
Why don't you keep it staggered but make it 1HD per each 2 Strength gained then?
>>
>>51108062
>I think it also gets a weapon specific boost when power striking later.

Slayer gets the option to augment power strikes with feats. He can even trade it in for a different power. It's basically about the same level of stuff BM gets.

>>51108077
And the Next fighter was an evolution (in this case, an actual evolution that improved upon the original) of the Slayer.
>>
>>51108145
>And the Next fighter was an evolution (in this case, an actual evolution that improved upon the original) of the Slayer.
Kinda agree with the caveat that it was trying to bring the castrated boredom that is Slayer closer to Weaponmaster
>>
>>51108062
A slayer can move their speed as a free action after hitting with an MBA if they are in the mobile blade stance, an at-will option
They can gain +10 to initiative, resist forced movement, gain bonuses to skill rolls, shield an ally or grant them CA, shrug off effects, or any number of utilities available to all fighters.
And they of course can gain a bunch of numerical bonuses to damage and attack rolls, charge speed, etc through their other at-will stances.
And that's not touching the feats, which add bonus effects to power strike like immobilizing, tripping, targeting alternate defenses, dazing, extra attacks etc depending on you favored weapon. And then there's the other 1000+ 4e feats that add effects too numerous to mention.

A slayer, for all the complaints it was a neutered, boring fighter designed for simpletons, could still do more than a battlemaster. Comparing them to champion is not even possible.
>>
>>51107772

Is this guy serious?
>>
>>51108222
More like it's because of the echo chamber of Not Muh Dee And Dee
>>
>>51108145
It can use a Feat to gain access to the Weaponmaster list, yes. But it has to swap out a Power Strike. Even then that was just to let Fighters mix around between the Essentials and non-Essentials. A Weaponmaster could also use a feat to swap out a power for a Power Strike. Battlemaster has none of this, it gets access to a 4e style power list. If you played it Essentials only, no Slayer is going to be doing a Commander Strike. No Slayer is going to be using Trip Attack or Cleave. Even with the mixing, you still need to spend a feat, just like anyone else could to pick up a multiclass or Power Swap. On top of this, from memory, Slayers generally made use of Fighting Stances rather than powers, something you don't really see a descendant of in the Battlemaster (unless I'm mis-remembering and that was only the Knight)

The Battlemaster was clearly informed by Weaponmaster design. They almost even share the same name.
>>
>>51108222
You fail reading comprehension forever.

>>51108122
I'll think about it. I really like the hd loss idea, but I think I might still go with the 4 hp loss, for gameplay reasons. It'll fit better with how I want the item to affect the characters. Thanks for the input, though.

Mostly unrelated, but equally important, does anyone know of any creature in dnd or real life that could survive for 6 months without eating or drinking? Preferably visible to the naked eye.
>>
>>51108243
>No Slayer is going to be using Trip Attack or Cleave.

It will instead use an augmented power strike that trips or does damage to a secondary target (or a stance that does that, now that you mention it).

Just because the different uses of power attack didn't have their own names doesn't make the Slayer pool and the BM pool different.
>>

Something something wuxia something. It's basically the 'other' idea I had, and I'm trying to come up with a backup to the main idea (Yay sword and board fighter) I had in case there were already going to be one or two other fighters in the group.

I was thinking of refluffing Kensai as wuxia, as I can take those compromises, but at the same time, as the DM is...holding back a little on what the setting is like, I'm trying to remember sometimes it's good to stick with classics, like the LE S&S fighter made of practical throat cutting.

>No Slayer is going to be using Trip Attack or Cleave.
A slayer with a flail trips on power strikes, a slayer with a heavy blade cleaves on power strikes
Slayer and BM bear more resemblance to each other than any other two fighter types from the two editions. A 4e Weaponmaster is doing things bizarre and far beyond the scope of any 5e fighter, like Come and Get It pulling in a circle of enemies, or going into regeneration stances that deliver autodamage to anyone nearby with Unyielding Avalanche, or grappling and dragging targets across the field to slam against walls for extra damage like with Slamming Rush. 5e has no equivalent to the weird shit a 4e weaponmaster could do.

It's for a semi-puzzle. The party will run into a dormouse, who is actually a wizard student who polymorphed himself to escape certain doom. From the spell description in the PHB, can I reasonably expect the party to deduce they'd have to kill the mouse to reveal the wizard? (there'll be hints in the room that True Polymorph was used).
>>
How's this for a character concept?
A tiefling starts out looking passably human. Sure, if you know what to look for you can tell it's a tiefling, but at a glance most people would be unable to tell. Starts adventuring. As the tiefling gains levels, starts mutating to look more and more fiend-ish. Soul has been marked by a devil before birth. Gives the DM a plot hook, the tiefling an adventure hook, and I think it's a bit cool anyway.
>>
>>51108509
TP is a 9th level spell. That's one hell of a student.
Also, dormice are super tiny. Are you sure the party will even pay attention to it?
Can't you go it a more Fantasy novel vein and make the transformation spell tied to some suspicious object? When you break the object the spell fades. To make it more noticeable, make it, say... a bottle with a semi-transparent image of the way the student used to look inside

That helped a lot. Thank you

Whether you're a player or a DM, have a plan for what happens when the players fuck up (When, not if. Every heist fucks up sooner or later.)
>>
>>51108464
There's a game called Leverage. It's made specifically for running heists
>>
>>51108550
That's not really a plot hook or an adventure hook. You can't really quest to change your race - if you really want to you can just get yourself killed and pay for a Reincarnate spell. It's just an overly edgy character quirk that probably won't even have time to be relevant.
>>
>>51108607
>You can't really quest to change your race
Not that guy but why not? Sounds like a perfectly cromulent quest when given by a deity or an arch-fiend
>>
>>51108607
The quest would be to try and stop the corruption. The more fiendish you look the harder it becomes to fit into society, so you want to find and kill the devil that's doing this to you.
>>
>>51108464
First you case the joint, make note of all the security personnel and features, then you put on your mask and try to stay as quiet as possible while dusabling as much of the security as you can. Once you feel you have a firm grasp on hostile elements you enter the locale and intimidate the civilians
Then you grab the thermal drill and put it to work while your mastermind makes sure there are no phone calls (not an issue if you have enough zip ties)
You should also check the manager's office for a smaller safe with extra cash
Once the main safe is open you start bagging the cash and/or gold while someone with a saw works the safety deposit boxes (this is very loud, and at least one extra ammo bag will be needed)
If the alarm goes off or a hostage calls the police you'll have to fight through several waves of goons, but if you hole up and make sure to only move bags between waves you should be fine
Prioritize cloakers, dozers and tasers, in that order. Watch the vents
>>
>>51108630
You can't do it because it's never more difficult to attain than a casting of Reincarnate. Any quest more difficult than raising a few hundred GP for a druid's services would not be worth the effort.

>>51108659
If there are any other tieflings in your game world, expect them to hate the shit out of you. Most tieflings look like tieflings from birth; they can't escape their devilish appearance. Their culture is based on surviving even though fitting in isn't an option for them. And you think you're so special that you deserve to look different from your own family? You're a disgrace.
>>
>>51108550
> but at a glance most people would be unable to tell

Are you trying to get mechanical benefit? Because playing a Tiefling mean you should immediately seem suspicious by all the NPC.
>>
New UA, when?!
>>
>>51108708
Problem with Reincarnate is that it's random. As a quest reward it's not
>>
>>51108572
>That's one hell of a student
Yeah, he had good materials (they're in the magic school, probably a scroll or something).
>>
>>51108742
Who cares? The most common outcome is human, and the odds that you'll become something else that people hate are pretty low. If you don't like the outcome, it'll still be easier to raise more gold and try again.
>>
>>51108708
There are other tieflings in the setting, there's a lot of variation in what they look like from the start. From the ones who are just humans with cat eyes and weird skin to the ones who walk around on hooves with wings and the whole shebang.
>>51108725
No, because gaining class levels makes you look more overtly like a tiefling. I'm thinking first few levels, you could use a disguise kit to apply some makeup and pass as a human, then after that you start getting horns, hooves, tail, whatever, and it becomes impossible.
>>51108767
You're also explicitly not you any more. You're a new character with most of the same memories but possibly a completely different personality. You only recall your previous life and experiences. Either way, my group rolls random race for that stuff including stuff like Volos, you might well end up a Naga pureblood or a bugbear.
>>
>>51108767
I'm not even talking about this tiefling guy, more in general.
Let's say Bob is a human elfaboo. He could petition Corellon to turn him into an elf or he could kill himself and Reincarnate* with a whopping 20% chance of fruitful transformation (that's if he's okay with any elf, 9% if he wants a high elf specifically)
It get even funnier if he wants a race that isn't on the table like an Aasimar or a Goliath

*not to mention nothing stops the druid to just take the money, feed Bob's body to his pet bear and fuck off
>>
Tell me your character concept and class.

I will tell you what item I'd make for you in my game.
>>
Tell me what's going on in your campaigns /tg/!

I DM two campaigns, just started back after a short winter break. I've got a group of rookies facing a seige by demonic forces in a port town they've been spending a lot of time in, and a group of veterans taking a second run at a sunken ruin filled with lovecraftian horrors and deep ones that they had to retreat from last session.

What are your players/comrades up to?
>>
Rolled 2, 1, 2 + 3 = 8 (3d4 + 3)

I cast magic missile
>>
>>51108886
Can i give you a bunch of my players concept/classes for items? I try to make personalised items for them as it is but some are harder than others.

wild magic sorceror who flips a coin to decide things like two-face, embraces chaos. ranger with a mastiff mount who's basically geralt of rivia.
>>
>>51108694
What do you do when there are more than 4 guards with pagers?
>>
>>51108802
>>51108550
>>51108659

At its heart, your idea for a character motivation is shallow and stupid. An adventurer's goal shouldn't be "just fitting in." You don't do that by adventuring; you do it by staying home and getting a real job. And in fact this character you have in mind should do just that, because if he never gains levels he'll never transform to the point where he's no longer passable as human. And if he does go adventuring for whatever reason, his level will probably increase in rough proportion to his fame and reputation, so that people will know he's a good guy no matter how he looks.
>>
Rolled 5, 2, 5 + 5 = 17 (3d10 + 5)

>>51108920
I Eldritch Blast you.
>>
>>51108955
Well, I'm dead. Thanks Fampai.
>>
>>51108930
I don't know what a geralt of rivia is.

Wild magic sorcerer: When he rolls a 1 on a damage die, it turns into a max damage roll.

Beast Conclave ranger?: A collar for the mastiff and an amulet for the ranger. They allow two-way telepathic communication so the ranger can give his mastiff orders without sound.
>>
How do you do a tragic backstory without becoming THAT guy?
>>
>>51108995
You should be extra dead, I just realised that it should really have been 3(1d10+5). So the total would be 27.

I too have made the mistake of dumping con before.
>>
>>51108920
magic missile is only one die for every missile

My DM is letting me have my Arcana Cleric Wizard spells as soon as they become availuable (6th level at 11, 7th at 13, and so on)

Which spells should I definitely get? Obviously 9th is Wish, but Stronghold building will be heavily featured, so I'm thinking shit like Wards and Guards and such

Kobold cleric of Tamara, draconic goddess of light, life, and mercy, who's got a foul and sassy mouth but happily sets up a mini-soup kitchen whenever the party reaches a town and genuinely believes the world's a pretty alright place even if a bunch of people are shitheads and the foul abominations that are undead exist.

You can use an action to spend 1 HD to recover a pact magic slot. Each time you use this ability, the cost increases by 1 HD. The cost reduces by 2 HD to a minimum of 1 each time you benefit from a long rest.

Look up a sorcerer guide.

Or, pick a role you want for your character. Then build a wizard that does it better.

Then pick something that metamagic allows the sorcerer to do exceptionally well and pick your spells and metamagic to do that. Metamagic is your subclass. The origin is just flavor.
