He "died" after losing a fight with AI hell-bent on subduing minds of all of humanity but was capable of resurrecting one of his comrades before his mind was erased. (AI committed suicide a week later). Said comrade continued his work and was able to half-break necro-nazis and free the living population from their clutches. Though Reich itself and its leader are still more or less intact.

I believe the term actually started with Archer from Fate. It was when someone said they would go "gar" for Archer, and the rest is as you described.

He's a cynical hardass who's been cut, mangled, burned and shot so many times he's gone through more hardware and spare tissues than a dyke maratoning a soap opera. Every morning he wakes up to piles of bills, cold pasta, memories of dead friends and a nontrivial chance of brutal, undignified end, and he eats the pasta without bothering to heat it.

In his downtime he moonlights as a crosdressing emo faglet on tube sites, so I guess it all evens out to zero.
