Yuan-Ti and Firbolg seem the big winners.

I really have no idea what I'm talking about, though.
>>
>>51067591
Well, I didn't really expect them to be the stealthiest. Usually someone goes shadow monk or rogue for that, which are both sensible options, but the druid actually does it really well.

Rangers aren't bad for it either.

>>51063365
It'd be best played as the enemy making a threat to use it if the players don't back down or something, rather than out of the blue. I doubt the bad guy wants to have to use a level 9 spellslot either.

>>51067583
Well, yeah. You still have to come up with a reason why only the monk might use whatever powerboost you gave him, maybe because he did something or whatever, but I do believe monks at the #1 trap for disappointing players.

The deal isn't about
>optimizing
or anything, it's just that if you're playing a rather dodgey or bad option then you have to optimize it in some ways to make it good. For example, protector aasimars are honestly probably getting into OP territory, but despite only giving +1 to wis it works well with a sun soul monk because they can fly and avoid being hit, attacking from range, getting rid of monk's main weakness of being forced into melee despite squishiness. If it was a half-orc, you really have to make their ability go the full milage or else it's really a big waste considering monks are already not very versatile.
If you're playing a wizard or bard or something already considered quite strong, you've got a lot more room to take it easy and do suboptimal things without relying on your DM's backup.
>>
>>51067744
Lizard folk.
>>
>>51067744
Yuan-ti and Aasimar are more powerful than they should be.

Orcs and hobgoblins are underpowered, with hobgoblins having traits that almost exclusively affect wizards.

So, a race that's actually fair, but also interesting, serves its purpose and makes you feel like it and all that...?
I'd say bugbear. Gotta be bugbear.
>>
So I was thinking of some houserules for my next campaign of 5e.
> roll 4d6, 8 times. Take 6 highest
> non-attack ability rolls are roll under with proficiency subtracted from the roll. DC and opposed is expressed by adding to the roll.
> 10 minute short rest. A long rest gives all hit dice back and level*con in hp
> instead of death saves, death occurs at -10 hp. Every round at 0 or below, a con save is made. On failure, lose 1 hp.
> stabilization occurs when at 0 hp. Death and dismemberment table is rolled when dropping below 0 hp.
> encumbrance rules from LotFP. More challenging hexcrawl style wilderness rules
> xp is gained from gold
> add con score to hp at first level
> monsters have 2per HD less hp

I'm thinking of essentially starting them off with a third level adventure with this. How do you think it would turn out in play?
>>
A guy in my group gave feedback to Mearls to ok the scrapping of the immortal because he felt it would be OP
>>
>>51067981

>>51067981
Sounds like it'd make players stronger and harder to kill while making monsters weaker. Gold being exp is just another way of quantifying it.
There's nothing wrong with it, but challenging your players will likely be harder unless you have specific ideas to do so
>>
>>51068008
Slap the bitch right in the kisser
>>
>>51067981
>implementing a shitty THAC0 with ability checks
Why the fuck are you playing 5e if you want all these stupid fucking rules?
>>
>>51068023
I'd essentially overlevel the adventures I'm thinking. Start off treating them as essentially 3rd level characters. I'm thinking the stronger characters combined with having it easier to die below 0hp, encumbrance, etc wil add a different feel.

As well, i'm going to use out of combat rounds for the strategic action economy. I roll random encounter chance if they do a short rest in a dungeon, I want to hash natural healing out to be a tad slower to come by, etc.
>>51068058
Thac0 is actually more retarded than this. They'll have "proficient ability score" where proficiency is added to the ability on their character sheets. So i'd just roll for them, add a mod and ask what their ability or proficient ability score is.

It makes the difference between 10 and 15 into 25% rather than 10%. So it's part of why i'm thinking of ways to decrease the incidence of low ability scores. Maybe, as normal but reroll 1's?
I'm thinking of reducing ability score increases to +1 to compensate but then it fucks with the math on attack increases and spell dc's. though with higher stats, it might not be as big of a deal.
>>
What's the best piece of homebrew you've ever come across?
>>
>>51067744

The Good

>>Aasimar are as developed as a PHB race
>>Triton seems pretty solid
>>Tabaxi finally shut people up asking about catgirls
>>Kenku are megamonks and just in time for new UA archetypes
>>I cant find fault with new monsters generally speaking

The Bad

>>Several of the races have really stupid enforced roleplay restrictions that limit the personality of your character significantly
>>Yuan-Ti have better versions of Dwarven resilience and Gnomish cunning along with stats and abilities on par with other races
>>Tabaxi and Kenku are neat but their stat set steps on Elves and Halflings toes a lot
>>Lizardmen are statistically almost a Dwarven sub-race and step on their toes as well

The meh

>>Hobgoblins were unexpectedly a Int race but they are saddled with their a racial class all their wizards are forced into which is absolutely fucking terrible to curtail their power
>>The return of penalties to some races
>>Hey we need more Giants? Fuck it just give one of them two shields like that on retard on the forums kept asking about doing fuck'em they'll buy it anyways
>>
I see a lot of shittalking about the Four Elements monk. As a new player who's only played two fucking sessions because of a solid month of delays a Draconic Sorcerer, what exactly's so bad about them?

i like Kobold cause of *coughcough* reasons
but Kenku seems like it'd be super fun to play as roleplay wise
>>
>>51068287

Way to expensive Ki costs and most of the abilities come too late to actually be useful. Your going to find that your using your base Monk abilities FAR more often and getting much better payoff which means you were better off with any other archetype
>>
>>51068268
>>Several of the races have really stupid enforced roleplay restrictions that limit the personality of your character significantly
to be fair you can just refluff those so something more fitting that serves the same purpose
like Turn the Kobolds "Grovel Cower and Beg" into and big attention grabbing action like a loud sharp whistle, or a flash bang, or a bloodthirsty yell.
or Take Saving Face from a pride oriented shrug off to a focused overcoming of an action, or tanking a hit because they've gone berserk.
and good DM would allow you to refluff a character mechanic to better suit your character. especially if it doesn't change mechanically.
unless they're an ass

>>51068921

Honestly it should have just been a 1/3rd caster like the AT or EK. Theres just not enough Ki points to function s a Monk and run that much magic off KI. It only works for a Shadow Monk because its very good utility stuff with a reasonable cost

>>51068885

Not much to say its a +2 Dex +1 Wis race that also gets some solid skill prof. choices. Its got everything you would need for whatever sorta Monk you wanna play

I heard that the eldritch knight into warlock multiclassing is really good, can someone break it down for me as to why?
>>
>>51068921
Or just let them have spell slots like EK/AT and free access to all the druid spells?
>>
>>51069044
Well, it comes down to your Evocations. At first level, you can get Eldritch blast, a d10 cantrip. At 2nd level, you can get 2 Invocations - probably Agonizing blast to add on Charisma damage and Fiendish Vigour for the free False Life. Since Warlock doesn't rely so much on its spell slots and gets them back superquick, it's great for an Eldritch Knight to stack up some health.

Homebrew man.
There's one popular fix out there.
Doesn't mean people can't discuss it in a thread dedicated to descussing D&D 5E.

Does EK have to spend second wind just to cast a spell? NO!

I don't think it's quite the same, but then I don't have any experience with editions where psionics were a thing...

But I'd say that, imagine you had a big heavy barbell. A wizard is the guy who studies and figures out a rope and pulley system to lift the bar using mathematics. Psionics would be the guy who trains until their muscles are strong enough to lift the bar.

Sorcerers are the guy whose grandfather was a pulley elemental so they gain an instinctive knowledge of pulleys. Warlocks ask their big brother to lift the barbell in exchange for a bag of weed.

A few years ago, he created fake accounts to troll and harass other youtube rpg channels all while publicly saying he was a supporter of them. At the time he was trying to monetize his channel and many believe he was essentially trying to drive off the competition and make himself the leader of the youtube rpg community.

When he was caught, he first denied his involvement, saying it was just a fan of his doing it, then he had the gall to blame the trolling on his brother who was dying of cancer. Finally he admitted he was the one who did it and posted an apology video that he has since removed.

Considering the tone of his CR and AI 'reviews' and other 'interviews' he's done, it would seem that he is currently trying to find new ways to attack the 'competition' and generate hits for his channel all at the same time.

target to double its size. the creature or object attains
the maximum possible size in the space available.
Until the spell ends, the target also has advantage on
5trength checks and 5trength saving throws. The
target's weapons also grow to match its new size. While
these weapons are enlarged, the target's attacks with
them deal ld4 extra damage.

That's as close as the rules get to addressing that corner case. The rest is in the hands of the GM.

Short version:

GM says "stop being a dick". Or GM thinks its awesome and that's all you do until one or both of you gets bored of it.

>eh, not sure how you're gonna do that on weaker monsters. If running gold = exp, you could simply have monsters run away much more often on grounds of not being suicidal.

No, you don't actually use pact of the blade for anything. But it's still more viable than using it.

Alternatively
Favoured Soul SorcererX
Fuck bladelock.
>>
>>51071456
While three levels is nice and all, it kind of completely crushes the point of being a bladelock.

Being a bladelock is about being someone who can do kinda decent melee damage, more than other full caster gishes, yet still have full spellcasting progression. That's their only niche.

The problem is favoured soul sorcerer can do that as well, except with better casting. Other gish options can do it much more viably but without quite as good damage.
Once you've detoured 3 levels, your casting really isn't anything special and you've kind of lost your point. Honestly, might as well be fighter1/warlockwhatever, though paladin is tempting.

I have used bladelock with fighter to have a Demon Knight kind of character. A fighter with a few supernatural tricks up his platemail sleeve.
It's not optimal, but we roll for stats, and I thought I'd use my great starting stats to do something a little different and still be useful.
The real struggle is deciding whether to go for 3x attacks, or more cool spells at high levels...
>>
>>51071456
>a 'secret' to bladelocks that makes them something other than "a class feature entirely dedicated to poorly emulating the Shilleigh cantrip"

Their spell selection lends itself to using reactive magic in every encounter while relying on your full attack. Counterspell and such. That doesn't make them better than blastlocks, but that's a high bar.

There's the classic Devil's Sight + Darkness shenanigans that only a Warlock can access, and that works better if you cast it on yourself in melee than from the back line.

Any class that isn't a proper fighting class is going to be a bit weak when it comes to fighting. Warlocks are spellcasters. Eldritch Blast or Blade Pact are for when you run out of spells, or ideas for spells. Fighters are much better fighters. Imagine that.

I actually rather like this idea.

I've had players hang onto inspiration points for multiple sessions, which in turn led to my being stingy with handing them out, which in turn leads to players hoarding them even more.

But a visual reminder of inspiration points, besides a little note on your character sheet, might help remind players they can use those, and that I can hand them out.

I don't really care for resurrection magic.

But I also don't really care for PC death, especially if it's to stupid shit like a pit trap or some random ogre.

I'm considering just taking a page from 7th Sea and saying that a PC can't die unless an action is specifically taken to finish off an unconscious/wounded character, but is that too much? Does anyone have a decent houserule for reducing outright lethality while keeping things still dangerous?

Thoughts on Protection vs Evil & Good in 5e, /5eg/?

It used to be a spell I always prepared in 3.5e and PF but as I read over it, the spell doesn't even grant the most important thing: Instantly halting any domination/charm effect. Just advantage and another save which lets be real, if it was the Fighter with -1 WIS save it ain't exactly helping.

PvE&G in 5e, not worth the prepared slot anymore?

What would happen if a Character Meld's into Stone with a sentient Stone creature? Would that character be simply "inside" the creature, or would they merge and become a single entity?
>>
>>51072899
>unless an action is specifically taken to finish off an unconscious/wounded character
Well, that can already happen by attacking a 0 hp character to give them death saving successes. Of course they can still die if no healing can get to them, but this shouldn't happen unless the party spits up or they fall in an acid pit or something. So I guess you could just houserule no rolling death saves, you're just stable at 0 hp until you're either healed our finished off?
>>
>>51073161
A stone entity is a construct or elemental, not an object, so Meld into Stone would not work RAW.

The former but it's roll under. With an ability score of 14 and +3 proficiency, a player is trying to roll under 17s. It makes ability scores more important. I don't see anyone making dragons with antimagic bubbles that fill the entire room except for a five foot radius around the monster. Also, the bubble does 20 irresistible damage. Houserule change on Witch Bolt: If cast at a higher level, the damage on subsequent turns decreases by 1d12, to a minimum of 1d12.

it's still shit, it's shit even when it does full damage every round (3d12, 3d12, 3d12 etc) because you need to be too close and it is too easily broken. >>51076116
Looks pretty awesome, thank you for the recommendation
>>
>>51076439
Use cantrips and select invocations that give you non-spell slot utility. 2 short rests per day is reasonable. The problem starts to resolve itself around level 7ish when your spell slots scale up up stuff like Hold Person automatically and level 11 when you get the 3rd pact slot with Mystic Arcanum.

You don't play warlock like a full spell caster even though it gets spell levels at the same rate. It's more like a half caster with more powerful spells.
>>
>>51076448
Is Hex supose to be something you can hold on to for later so long as you can keep concentration? like from one room fight to the next? I would have thought it ends when there are no more enemies to hop to that you can see.
>>
Are there any feats that benefit wielding one weapon and no shield?

I want to be able to climb and quickly change to a bow if required. Can't do that with a shield.
>>
>>51076516
Hex doesn't target enemies. It targets creatures. Hex yourself to carry it into the next room if your DM is a stickler about leaving it on a dead body. If it ended when targets died, the bonus action to swap it wouldn't function correctly.
>>
>>51076548
"If the target drops to 0 hit points before this spell ends, you can use a bonus action on a subsequent turn of yours to curse a new creature."

On A subsequent turn. Not your next turn. The way I'm understanding that is that you can re-hex at any time for the duration. So enemy dies, go to another room, bonus action to place it on a new creature,

And placing it on yourself wouldn't allow you to move it to anyone else, because you can't place it while the current target is alive.
>>
>>51076604
Then that's even better and further demonstrates the point that Hex doesn't end just because you run out of enemies in the current room.
>>
>>51076530
You have some options here.
1h weapon, no shield: No great feats to take, but you can grab ASI's and more defensie feats like defensive duelist.

1h weapon, handcrossbow: Grab crossbow expert and just sheathe the sword when you need to reload it.

2h weapon, no shield: A two handed weapon is still just a sinlge weapon, so you can grab a great weapon or a polearm and go to town with polearm expert and/or great weapon master.

2 1h weapons: If you grab the dual wielder feat you can sheathe your two weapons just as fast as you could normally just sheathe your one weapon.
>>
So Getting the pact book is good for the cantrips and later invocation for 2 level 1 ritual spells and being able to ritual spell known, like find familiar and alarm where 10 minute cast time wont matter too much. And spell modifier damage to eldrich blast and the falselife temp hp is good for the first 2 invocations right?
>>
>>51072899

i think the cost of resurrection is big worry. especially if someone gets obliterated/left behind, that's 25k for true resurrection if i'm right
>>
>>51076710
The book gives a great selection of cantrips and access to every single ritual spell ever if you can find them.
The two first invocations can be whatever, but you will want cha damage. False life is redundant if you are a fiend pact lock.
Other good picks are repelling blast and devils sight.
>>
How does this sound as a purely flavor ability?

>When holding a one handed weapon you can use an action to switch to a defensive stance, giving you the benefits of holding a shield; however your off-hand is considered full until you take an action to return to your normal stance.

Basically just let a character use a shield without actually holding one for characters that are themed around fighting defensively with a two handed style.
>>
Should I go Eldritch Knight or Battle Master?
>>
>>51076812
EK is more defensive, Battle Master is more offensive. Both are good.
>>
>>51076812
Describe your party and we'll tell you
>>
>>51076811
if it's a purely flavor ability, you don't even need to make the ability.

Also, it doesn't quite work, because this would let you avoid the don/doff times of a shield (if there is one) and lets you avoid using your "use object" action for the round.
>>
>>51076812
>Should I go Eldritch Knight or Battle Master?
yes.
>>
>>51076468
If your DM let's you get through an occasional long rest without incident, but interrupts every short rest attempt then he actually hates short rest classes for no reason.

I believe the general assumption is that you should be able to do 2 short rests and 1 long rest per day.
>>
>>51071079
no that's 10d6 damage at least
>>
>>51072899
I just make resurrection be a big ordeal, whether it's plain expensive or a mini-quest or involves a deal being made that'll come back later.

That and I avoid traps in general, but when I do they don't deal lethal damage. When you hit zero, assuming you're not in combat, you just stabilize and are stuck where you fell.
>>
>>51076865
The don/doff time is 1 action so It should be the same
>>
>>51076964
a monk would be able to use that stance without interfering with Martial Arts/unarmored movement, though.

>>51077015

Are you all missing that this is just a shittier version of the Dodge action? Why take an action to pretend you have a shield when you can just impose disadvantage on all attacks against you for a full round?
>>
>>51077048
the point is that they can remain in that stance for an extended length of time
>>
Does "You can communicate telepathically with any creature..." imply one-way or two-way communication?
>>
Where do you get ideas for your characters or campaigns?
>>
>>51077266
All two-way communication abilities will say as much later in the text (the creature can respond). If there are language stipulations, that will also be stated.

So if you're talking about GOOlock telepathy, it's one-way, and they needn't share a language. You are just yelling in their head in their own language, which you don't know.
>>
>>51077266
If you're talking about the first-level feature for a Great Old One Warlock, it's one-way
I think the language for a two-way connection is "establish a telepathic link"

My players are indecisive so I'm going to let you guys vote on this:
I’m working on the Spirals guidebook, and I know that, at some point, two rival crime families joined together after a prolonged war. I can’t decide how they do it. There’s two options:

1. The leaders of both families arrange two marriages between members of the actual leading family, unifying the organizations and ending the fighting
2. The fighting seems like it will never stop, but eventually a daughter from one family and a son from the other fall in love, and that unifies the families, sort of like in west side story.

Player wants to be a Dex fighter. Thoughts on changing proficiency in Strength saving throws to Dex ones?
>>
>>51074584

You have VERY limited spell casts. Take spells for maximum impact. Witch Bolt and Hellish Rebuke (to me) seem a little underwhelming. Direct damage is something the fighter can do.

Instead, I'd take spells like sleep, or dissonant whispers. Darkness is a good pick if you tske the darkvision invocation.

If you feel like multiclassing, warlock meshes well with most classes.

Don't forget the ritual caster invocation for your tome! The ability to cast rituals like Detect Magic or Identify can be reallly valuable to the party.
>>
>>51078793
Not necessary, just take Shield Master if it matters. Strength saving throws are important for an up-close character.
>>
>>51078793
If you're going to change anything about the saving throws, change Con to Dex. All classes have a strong and weak save, and Con and Dex are both strong saves.

>>
>>51079411
Well, I suppose that could be done a few ways.

Being disarmed makes you lose your weapon and shield,

being de-shielded makes you lose your benefit of the stance unless you use another action to reuse it (Maybe the DM says it takes 1d4 turns before you can or something for how a Fighter would have to run to retrieve the shield),

or maybe if you're disarmed you keep your AC (but one of your hands is still considered full), and you use your gauntlet or something else thematically fitting for the character to evade until you get your weapon back
>>
>>51079442
I wasn't experienced i've made mistakes a ton of them, it was monotonous, stupid and made no sense, it was just terrible..

They stay the fuck out of combat for fear of their lives and imbalancing the game, if they're not loyal they loot the first piece of treasure they find and run, if they are loyal they retire ASAP after they get whatever ridiculous pay they get for joining adventurers on life-threatening missions. Unless they work in a stable job as a maid or something.

If they get into combat, expect death. As more guys die, people become less loyal, less willing to work and request bigger payments to join the suicide squad.
>>
>>51079534
and what of rust monsters or wood destroying effects?
>>
>>51079535
It's okay, dude. I did the same, in probably worst ways. Just don't stop trying. I suggest starting light and low. Maybe adapt an existing adventure to your campaign. Learn your limits and talents, and identify your mistakes before you make them. Also, learn from when you fail. It's inevitable, and even DMs with many years of experience will make a bad decision once in a while.

>>51079553
Just add his proficiency bonus to the Goblin's attack rolls. The rest is equipment and roleplaying.
>>
>>51079701
ez

Is your weapon metal? it gets rusted.

Is your weapon wood? (ie: quarterstaff) it's affected by wood-destroying stuff.

This is assuming your using the topmost "getting disarmed also makes you lose your shield", since that one seems to be the best option to me.

Don't let the constant presence of other PCs distract you from the fact that most living things are not adventurers. In 5e at least, an adventurer with levels represents people uncommonly good at learning, such that they can learn and gain in a few adventures what most members of their race couldn't accomplish in a lifetime. This is especially true of lesser monster races such as Kobolds and Goblins.

So don't bother with stats of level ups or anything, just use the statblock for an average Goblin, and maybe give him some new weapon/skill proficiencies as the adventure goes on. Followers aren't meant to supplant actual adventurers, so if he ends up dying it is most likely your PC's fault for expecting him to carry the same load as they do.

Thoughts on this vs Paladin
>>
>>51079939
Looking through it, I don't see anything that really makes it much better than, say, a ranger. Compared to a paladin, one of the best classes, it can hardly compare. Heck, I don't even see what they're getting at. They have too many uses for bonus actions, they have a key feature that has use limited by spellcasting modifier and for some reason has scaling AC with level (which seems a bit unnecessary, but eh, I guess it's simulating magical weapons/shields)... They have the most boring level 5 ever where all they get is level 2 spell slots. Not even extra attack or anything.

Heck, I think ranger might actually be better.

The class's point seems to be sort of an EK that sucks at attacking but can use a bonus action a number of times a short rest to give people AC or (providing your DM doesn't throw out magical weapons to everyone) boost their attack a little.

Easy. Don't play past level 5.

Thanks to bounded accuracy and the fact that you won't play high levels, advantage is plenty. Expect a DC no higher than 13

Solar has flight 150ft.

Pit fiend has flight 60ft. and Balor has flight 80ft.

Solar could kill either very easily. Planetar, with flight 120ft. could probably do it too

Attacking and then flying out of reach effectively means that the enemy can, at most, get one opportunity attack against you per round instead of their usual multiattack

Additionally, the Solar has Dispel Evil and Good and can attempt to banish a fiend.

It would work particularly well against a Pit Fiend.

DC 25 Charisma saving throw and the Pit Fiend isn't proficient so only +7
