The older I get the more I like the idea of using straight up keebler/christmas elves.

The Elves from Athel Loren seem like they can have a good time.

High/Wood Elves from WHFB are pretty good, their aesthetics and their lore is interesting, without Tolkienesque mary suing. They have an important role in world affairs (HE does at least), but they're not the best at everything, and does need the other races from time to time.

You can punch and slash, but mostly they lend themselves for parrying and blocking. Technically could also be used for stabbing if you get a good opening . What the protrusion is for I have no idea. I've been planning a sidequest where the players must travel to the astral plane in search of a lost wizard after a teleportation malfunction. They'll be projecting themselves using a druid's herb collection, and through the transition there they'll make contact with machine elves. I don't as much mind the mutant part as the Eredar part, because that's really the part where it shows that Blizzard doesn't care. They took an established racial concept and wanted to expand upon it, but conveniently forgot details about that racial concept and didn't bother to fact check, so they just wrote what their cocaine fuelled brainstorming brought up. That alone was bitter but we could have lived with it, I guess, not the first time the Dindu card was played. It's maybe a bit worse because it was DEMONS, not people, that got retconned, but w/e.

But then there's this enormeous shitheap of unnecessary upscaling, making the Draenei the eternal angelic enemies to Kil'jaeden, who at this point is the Satan of Warcraft Sargeras is a useless, lazy pile of shit, and the speartip against the Legion on Azeroth.

And that is, ultimately, what galls me personally about the Draenei in their current form: A race which should consist of the downtrodden, the exhausted, the spent remains of a fallen race of survivors with sometimes ambiguous morals is instead an enclave of cardboard cutouts of lawful goodness. They should be the epitome of cathartic tragedy, where a hard life breeds hard people, where the humility of resignation teaches you insightfulness and that leads to a surprising cheerful outlook on life. Instead, the summary of our favourite slutgoats reads like they have acquired all this knowledge simply because their resident senile grandfather talks to LED windchimes.

That's what I mean with wasted potential, and that's where I see Blizzard not caring as much as I'd like them to.

The Draenei, which literally translates to "refugee", have survival and being chased as the core of their racial identity, or should have at least, and that should be visible from every angle you look at them. Instead, shiny baubles, polished metalwalls of what we're told to be the wreckage of totallynot!Spaceships, Gothic plate armour and practicing a religion consisting of all the lame aspects of Jediism somehow have taken up a ridiculous importance.

Now mind you, this is all the summary text of their culture. I agree that questtexts, which is interaction on a personal level and first-hand experience, does quite a bit to alleviate the bad taste, however there's this lingering itch of "not enough", simply because the authors still operate from this racial summary of "THE good guys, man!".

That really pissed me off when I first saw Burning Crusade. I loved the Draenei in WC3. The first time you encounter them, they are a broken and primitive but upright race fighting against demonic oppression. They are ugly as fuck but they can do tons of cool stuff. The mission where you use them to sneak into the black citadel and make use of their invisibility and spells is my all-time favorite mission in Warcraft. It would have been cool if the Alliance would have gotten some cool ugly underdog, instead of the Orcs being made into noble savages who only were made to do bad things because demons.

Not sure how "crazy wizard who wants to tear open the barrier between worlds" is uninteresting as well. Especially when they managed to tie the 3 games stories together quite well and in such a way that wasn't hamfisted, or completely ignoring previous games, like most sequels to.

Just because the game gives you the option to tell Sera to fuck off doesn't forgive the fact that they thought it was worth it to put in a character that was worth telling to fuck off on your first encounter with them.
I had to force myself to not tell her to fuck off in the first encounter because it was the first play through. Maybe she'd get better. Nope. Never fucking did.
