What is your favourite uncommon race in fantasy tabletops, /tg/? Forget the dwarves, elves and hoomans. What unusual or unique race do you like the best, and why? For me it's Goliaths. Fair, lawful and pragmatic, as well as ridiculously strong.

I love the Gloranthan duck people (thanks King of Dragon Pass!)

Tbh my money has to go to either the hardcore beastman Minotaurs, or Codex Alera style Canim/wolfman things.

You know. The kind that are seven or eight feet tall, have completely alien body language and social cues, and will tear your throat out if they smell fear.

Oozes, slimes, jellies, etc.. Lousy Ghaunadaur had to throw a hissyfit because Lolth wouldn't go out with him. So he stole the intelligence from all the slimes. Gelatinous Cube could have been a playable monster monster race, but they were cursed with a moronic deity that thought it would be a good idea to do irrepairable damage to all his followers - followers which are kinda essential for being a powerful deity. Now Ghaunadaur's a third-rate chump that no one cares about. I just wanted to be a pudding.

You gave me an idea for a race of insectoids.

They were initially similar to ants or bees but bigger. And with a lot more castes. Like scientist, merchant that kinda thing. They had extensive interactions with the other races. At one point, their birth rates are reduced. Most larvae end up being stillborns.

So some hives turn to necromancy. It would be interesting to use them as good necromancers in a setting. It would be interesting to have them be allies to paladins.

For example Cynocephali, the dog-head people that appear even in christian texts and the Blemmyes, the headless men that often appear living in the edges of the world in old maps.

Also the arimaspi, basically one-eyed warlike steppe people, although I don't know if that counts as uncommon since you could call them just bizarre cyclops.

Sorry not really, it was when I was younger. I'd love to do a write up for you but I'm working away atm. They had a number of different species of rabbit and the main ones were mostly bipedal. There were larger hares that were more traditional animals with almost no speech or understanding that they used as mounts and agricultural tools. And a species that was roughly half the size of the main ones that lived along side them. They were almost never seen in battle other than as attendants and medics. The rats similarly had a sub species of mice that were not entirely unified and therefore would occasionally aid either side or ask for aid from either side. I don't remember what it was, but there was some resource that they fought desperately over and the knights often accompanied civilian efforts to gather it. Which is usually where the rats would strike.

old norse - Hrafin
Also from norse - Reafan - the name for a battle banner with a raven on it that a viking used which had magical properties.
Welsh - Bran - a welsh god whose name translates to raven
Koryaks (russian far east peoples) - Kutcha
Tlingit (Pacific NW Indian tribe) - Yeil

Who the fuck calls Mr Clean "Mr Proper"? Is that the brit version?
>>
>>51075955
Uh sure. This was back in high school before I knew people who would play games besides D&D so I just took the d20 system and build a terrible game on top of it. The party was a Carrion Crawler, a Drider, some stripe of Earth Elemental, an Illithid, and an Umber Hulk. My excuse to the group for all the standard raced being dead was that there had been an apocalypse that had killed them all. I started the party out in an abandoned walled city surrounded by wasteland "with no memory about how you got here," and that was everything that I had written for the game. I had an overly detailed map of the city, and a (lame) random encounter table for the wasteland. My players quickly picked up on the fact i had nothing, and were getting frustrated when one of them said
>What time is it?

>Me: like 6 we only just started

>No in game, I look at the sun what time is it?

>Oh, The sun is setting just past the horizon.

So the players decide to explore some more because the majority have dark vision. After forcing them to travel from one part of the city to the other in laborious detail, they ask
>How dark has it gotten?

>I just said it was about sunset.

>Are you telling us that boring stretch of bullshit took less time than it takes for the sun to set?

Shit, time to double down.
>No it took a while but the sun still hasn't set.

Party decides to sit and watch the sun set. It never sets. After some discussion the party decides that the never setting sun is obviously what the adventure is about, and leave the city heading west. They fought some random encounters (mostly normal animals that encounter table was lame,) and by the end of the night the consensus was that despite a rocky start the campaign seemed to be going some place cool. What they didn't know was that they were literally at the edge of my map.

Part 2

So having just pulled my ass out of the fire by accident I started working on the next week of adventures. I make an abandoned wizard's tower full of animated objects for them to explore, and updated my random encounter table to be less lame. So the party is walking across the blasted wastes, and I roll a random encounter. A group of drow. Why are there drow above ground? For the same reason that the sun never set because I was a dumb high school kid trying to keep my friends interested enough to not leave and play xbox. I have stats for a fight, but the Illithid has other plans.

>I greet the drow.

>What?

>We're all 'monsters' right? The drow won't attack me on sight right?

>Yeah right of course.

So the party talk with the drow. They ask where the drow are going. I say something about going to a city to the north because the drow heard that others were congregating there.

>Players: Oh we definitely should go there. Let's follow the drow.

The party goes north. I throw some encounters in their way as they go, and even get to use the wizard's tower for one session. I start having to name, and flesh out the drow. After a few sessions of walking, fighting, and talking to NPCs when they rested in the eternal twilight the party made it to the city. I had come up with a cool plot involving a devil that was running the city with an iron fist. The players spent a few session kicking around the slums of the city they decide to keep heading west and leave town.

That is essentially how the game went after that. Walk west, get detoured, deal with some problem, talk to the NPCs, repeat. After a few loops of this I got the hang of it. I would make entire story lines by randomly flipping to pages of the monster manuals. The party would never want to fight anything that they didn't have to because of the novelty of getting to talk to things that normally wanted to eat adventurers. The longer we player the wackier things got.
>>
I'd like to play as a pansexual tiefling.

Part 3

Some of the more memorable things the party encountered.

>Kobolds trying to reassemble a temple like a jigsaw (they weren't certain what head whet with what statue but they tried bless 'em)

>Angels that were afraid to fly.

>Lesser Devils trying to build a miniature hell on earth, but everything was tied up in a planning committee.

>Valley of dinosaurs. fuck you it was cool!

>Lich that was a good guy before the apocalypse, and went lich to survive.

>A clockwork city with clockwork people, and clockwork fire bombings by clockwork separatists.

>Myconid chess masters.

>Two forests that were in a cold war. (they both developed fire weapons)

>People (drow, goblins, and gnolls mostly) worshiping a giant dragon puppet.

>WW2 battle field staffed with zombies.

>Flying garbage cities.

They never made it all the way west we all went to college with the hope that we would one day get together and play again, but never did.

Goblins and orcs are the dominant species on one continent of my homebrew world.

Goblins are the tech junkies. They have crude gliders and are experimenting with electricity, steam and gunpowder. They're on the verge of a major techno-religious schism.

Orcs are more the noble savage, willfully primitive types, on this continent anyway. On the high plateau they're more like plains Native Americans, the highland orcs are a bit more pastoral and the lowland orcs a bit more cosmopolitan.

I'm a hardcore min maxer but I like roleplaying too so I end up building characters around gimmick obsessed builds. That being said, I love Skulks. Anti social, near invisible, dick ass rogues as a race.

The challenge was making one that was interested enough in civilization to join a party. He was ONLY seen by the party if he could help it and lost his spaghetti if an outsider noticed him. Kinda like an Enderman.

Also skeletons.

Their fluff bastardized an already fucking annoying setting. They're special snowflakes- in FR, which is even worse. For some reason, the method of their entrance as a core race has lead the players who are already mostly autistic that prefer them to just assume their shitty race is allowed in any setting, in any context.

Dragons themselves have gotten really tacky if done improperly, and the dragonborn essentially piggyback off the worst parts of this: 90's anime tier elemental focus, honor caste society, all combined with essentially being an entire race of Drizzits. The art that is used to depict them in every book is fucking atrocious- and yeah, I know that's a subjective point, but jesus christ do the Dragonborn always look fucking retarded. Like somebody took the Predator and tried very slightly to make him appealing enough to children that he could star on a cartoon show.

And, what's worse, they're unabashed furries. Yes, scalies are furries, and dragonborn are worse even than the degenerate fucks who post about kobolds.

Humans.

Only humie in my party

I like Rats, or failing that, Mice.
Gregarious, mildly coward, ingenious, and with a penchant for greed. Basically caricaturized humans.

>basically characterized humans.

Triggered. You could say that about literally any race the only difference is one's opinion on humanity.

Well, that's why I like them, because they fit my narrative.

I don't know about that, but then again, I don't have dragonborn in any of my games.

What about Cow-Bug people? Horns, an exoskeleton, and multiple stronk arms, what's not to love?

You don't seem to understand just how rampant kobold degeneracy is

Drow were always pretty interesting to me just because I found the gray skin sexy. When I actually read about them I was still intrigued because of driders and the whole "fallen elf" thing was kind of cool, but when I found that it was impossible to make a good Chaotic Neutral or true Neutral character with a Drow I got really upset and never played.

I've always wanted to play a Chaotic Neutral Drow who just didn't give a shit about the law and drank and did jobs for whoever and was generally flexible (as neutral should be), but everyone was always so red flag about me playing a Drow that I've never gotten the chance.
