Orks are a difficult army to play, they are bad, but not unplayable. If you want to play a couple of models you can run kill team, which orks are pretty good at. Kill team is usually around 10-30 models of guys.
Generally, pick an army you like, and learn to play them. Being competitive with any army revolves around milking the codex for the biggest amount of cheese as possible, and all codexes can do that, just some easier.
If you ever want to play orks in a larger points number, like 500-1500, some key points are:

Footslogging ork boyz suck unless you run green tide formation, which is about 100 models. If you choose to run boyz, put them in a battlewagon, or give them some form of defense if they footslog, like a painboy for FNP or eavy armour for a 4+. Shootas are worse than sluggas in my opinion, but its up to you really. A slugga cost no points and come by default and gives the ork an extra attack and a 12" s4 ap6 shot hitting on 5's. A shoota cost 1 extra point and causes them to lose and attack and have 2 base, but grants you 2 s4 a6 18" shots hitting on 2s.

Tankbustas are amazing, a squad of 10 guys with s8 ap3 rokkits, regardless of the fact that hit on 5's is goat, with re rolling armour pens and getting an extra victory point if they score first blood. Bomb squigs are a 5 point rokkit thats ap4 and hits on a 2+, which pretty much guarantees a kill.

Mek guns are good, but hard to come buy. You can convert them out of leman russ barrels, 3rd party, or scratch built them out of plastic tubing and some plasticard

Warboss is a CC fucking monster, with the ability to dish our 6 s10 ap2 attacks on the charge is fucking delicious, however, he is suspectable to shooting. Either give him eavy armour or a 2+ mega armour save

90% of the forge world units for orks are the best, and you can easily convert them, depending on how skilled you are.

To add on, grots are the best scoring units in the game in my opinion, they will die to anything, but theyre 3 points per model, and can kill terminators if you get lucky and make back theyre points cost. They also look cool as hell imo

Trukks are dedicated transport and really fast but fucking when being looked out, FW makes a bunch of other transports for the heavy support slot that can be sqaudroned that are better armoured incase you want a different vehicle.

Weirdboys are situational, I take them if i want hammerhand (2+ strength for a turn) for some reason.

Warbuggies are good, Grot tanks are better, but theyre forgeworld and need converting.

The start collecting box is actually pretty good, Deff dread is a CC monster, boyz are troop takes, painboy is a decent cheap hq, Nobs are pretty bad, theyre overpriced, but if you run them barebones with big choppas and eavy armour you might get somehting out of them?
The formation they get is also good, allowing them once a turn to attack twice without letting the enemy attack back during on of these attacks

Orks boyz, grots, etc are dirt cheap on ebay because panzies just give up and sell em

Bascially, do your research before asking online and taking a one word response. Its the equivalent of righting a blog post to a friend when your depressed and he responses with "k"

Okay so I checked the rules and they say a Battle-Forged army must be in detachments, but it does not say an unbound army cannot include detachments. Anyone that could clear this up? I have ~1500 points of them and I plan to start playing them against my friends. We don't play competively but sometimes they do some pretty stronk list.

Commander with drone controller and gubbins with 2-5 crisis suits with missile pods and target locks and 2-12 marker drones as a big scary unit that can put out bs5 twin-linked lights on units that are not handled by the massed missiles of the suits. Paired up with skyray or two. If I have odd 50-100p left I usually take pathfinders to fill the gap.

My favorite is the 3 stealth suits, shas'vre with markerlight&target lock, drone controller and 2 marker drones to get lights in more trickier locations but as a pure markerlight unit this is expensive as hell in points.

How would you go about building a Baneblade into a command tank for an Archmagos? I was thinking of building a Stormlord, swapping out the front gun for a Hellhammer cannon, the sponsons for admech guns, the crew for servitors and giving the stubbers on the troop bay little servo-skull operators, and then turning the rest of the troop bay into a command platform, with some control panels and such, and filing off all the aquilas splattered everywhere.
Does anyone know a cool place to get some reasonably-sized control panels, and does anyone have any other ideas? I think this will be my next project after my War Convo is painted.

Don't suppose I could get some help with fleshing out the concept for my Space Marines chapter?

The Chapter is an offshoot of a traitor legion, who refer to themselves as the Ashen Ledgers, having adopted that name for their tendency to inscribe the names of every fallen brother within a ledger, a copy of which is carried by each squad leader.

During daily rites, battle-brothers will meditate on their ledgers, the names of the dead and how they died, under the belief that they gain spiritual insight through this.

Basically, there's two points I need help/opinions on.

The first is which traitor legion they are most likely to have been an offshoot of, which one makes the most sense and at what point during the Heresy might they split?

The second is what kind of "gimmick" could be derived from the ledger thing and how might that play in rules-wise?
I'm kind of toying with the idea of uttering the names of the deceased in battle giving them moments of insight or increased strength.

No no, you see I have the marker drones to play as markers, I just use a ton of gun drones as gun drones as part of the Drone-Net to substitute FWs. Drone-Net draws some ire for being a formation that's often minmaxed in suit lists but an army made out of them is surprisingly okay and perhaps even fun.

I love the Skyray, though. Like all Tau tanks they are probably too expensive to be really worth it, but Skyfire markerlights work wonders, and 6 BS5 krak missiles, possibly with Ignores Cover if they need it are no joke. Consider that the spiritual and practical are often heavily intertwined in 40k, and that meditating on the deaths of their brothers isn't just granting them a spiritual insight, but also a very real understanding of what a Space Marine can and can't do. I can imagine these guys being familiar with anti-Space Marine tactics and weaponry to a point where other Chapters might even consider them morbid, as every Brother Averagus Tactical Marine has already meditated on the battle-readouts and pict-feeds of how all of their brothers have died, up to and including the tactical situation.

Word Bearers? In a literal sense, I suppose. These were the guys into spiritualism before it was cool, although all their loyalists were supposedly thoroughly purged.. Otherwise, maybe Luna Wolves, Dusk Warriors (pre-Morty Deathguard), Emperor's Children, or even Iron Warriors could work.

As for tabletop mechanics, you could give them a Red Scorpion-like tactic. Red Scorpions can make their Sergeants for basic Tactical squads Apothecaries for free, you may be able to do the same and give the Sergeant a pseudo-Chaplain ability or even War Hymns from Ecclesiarchy Priests.

Relatively new to this game, and enjoy it well enough until the point it becomes just a big melee blob. Is this just how the game ends up or is it because me and my friends I play with suck at the game and don't know what we;re doing? I have a necron force and he's soace wolves, so it is in his best interest to get into melee. SoS are mostly just SoB/Marines power-wise. They don't bring much raw power besides that. They are taken for their ability to fuck psykers and protect your dudes. Skitarii have no psykers of their own, so having enough SoS on the field would hamper an opponent who brings any to try and take advantage of your lack of defense.

Ultras could do it, but it's possible other Chapters act just as pragmatically as well. Maybe they pulled the Iron Hands out of the fire in a bad spot, or they personally bought Dorn a minute of critical time with the sacrifice of tons of their dudes, or they even got in good with Lion.

I'd say take some rolls on the Chapter Generators, with some foregone conclusions in mind, and see what you roll up. It might make a neat framework with some interesting results that could help flesh out a story. And contradictory results could represent a change in Chapter doctrine or represent a change from what they were/are because of changes to the chapter during or after the Horus Heresy, or at a significant point thereafter in the post-Heresy timeline.

It didn't last that long because he had to leave, but it was a Maelstrom of War. The d12s were objectives and we could score off of beach others capture objectives.

He went first and rolled up his bikers and some possessed off the left side.

I rolled up my plasma command squad (black turret). The CS got out and nuked the bikers. The Seraphim hopped over to engage the chosen, faithed, nuked most of them, assaulted, then HnR into the building to meet some cultists. I forgot his warlord was over there and they would later eat shit.

My HB rets and Exo shot at the cultists in the top left corner, who went to ground and took 2 wounds.

At the end of the turn, he had 3 VP and I had 1. I would've had 2, but I couldn't make his cultists take a moral. He also took one of mine and had a KDK objective that gave him one for a unit being wiped.

Turn two, his murder face warlord wiped my Seraphim, and I managed to tie at 3 VPs from line breaker and holding an objective that he rolled. He had to call it there due to a home emergency.

I'm right there with you. Leman Russ tanks are my favorite. I just think they are a little expensive points wise. I think most of them need a drop of about 10-20 points.

Bullgryns with all Bane masks are my favorite non-tank models at the moment.

For some reason I have it in my head that a CSM Sorcerer with a Mark of Chaos no longer needs to roll one of his powers on his god's discipline (rolling all of them on Ectomancy, for example). Is this true or am I a big dumb who is remembering things wrong?

Since the Legions in Traitor's Hate still have the CSM faction, I can't take a CAD of one Legion and an allied detachment of a different Legion, right?

IG are cool. I had a few IG players I played with back in 5th, which is also when I had players. Right now, it's mostly just me an KDK, who's somewhat new. I'm working on new people, though.

Already have them.

Back in 5th, I started Tzeentch daemons because they were different and fun back then. I dropped a bunch of 5 man horror squads all over the place and vomited S5 BS3 shots everywhere. I've since retired them because they're not fun for anyone in this edition.

I also have a small batch of Deldar that I need to finish. If I had the money when they came out, I would've played them back in 5th. Now that I have a bit of spending money, I treated myself.

Last but not least, I'm working on both HH boxes. I want to make them playable in both 40k and 30k, but I think 30k rules come first because they're better for CSM anyway.

I'm honestly more than a little overwhelmed and am drowning in backlog that I don't know I'll ever finish.

you are not allowed to take an allied detachment of a legion if another legion detachment is your primary detachment, unless given specific permission (I believe the space marine chapter tactics rules allow you to ally yourself, not sure if the legion rules do)

As long as the sorceror doesnt have a mark of a specific chaos god, he can roll all his powers on whatever he wants.

I'm 99% sure that you can ally a different legion in, just like tau can ally in farsight enclaves no problem.

You only need one Vox caster per giant 50 man blob, so I would drop 4 of them.

Also drop the Heavy Bolters on the Leman Russ tanks. They will be snap firing all game if you ever fire the Battle Cannon, which you should be doing. If you're keeping them as a back up in case the Battle Cannon gets destroyed, I think it's a waste of points.

So if you drop the 4 Voxs from the Infantry Squads and drop the sponsons, you've freed up 60 points. This way you can add a Priest or Commissar to the big blob for 25 points to keep them from running, add in a couple of special weapons to the PCS with 10 points, and use the last 25 points to ally in an Imperial Agents Astropath to give out Presience to the big blob squad or the Heavy Weapons Squads.

Can we compile a list of units that are affected by Fear and other fear like abilities?

Only if your given specific permission. The rules for the Allied Detachment say that it can not be the same FACTION as your primary detachment, and supplements are considered to be the parent faction.
I don't think most people would care, but unless traitor legions gives you permission, RAW, you can't

does the unit have 'and they shall know no fear?' does the unit have fearless? does the unit ignore fear/morale checks? then it's probably affected by fear. offhand guard, most eldar, dark eldar, tau, most sisters, cult mech, skitarri, inquistion, orks, harlequins, most necrons, and miliatrum tempestus are effected.

you shouldn't worry about fear because it hardly does much when everyone is ld9/10 and if you're in combat you're already dead.
