And some others claim that magic types are OP, but never back that claim up.

It's a neat idea in theory but realistically there's the problem of having group that will not lean towards murderhoboism. Or try to molest everything cute sexually. Probably both.

It's great, I used it to introduce my girlfriends younger siblings to RPG's.
It's a cute and charming with an interesting focus on travel and socializing instead of combat.
Great for one off's or short games. I wouldn't recommend a full campaign unless you have a group with good Role playing chemistry.

It's very Japanese. I personally don't like it, but I recognize why some people enjoy it.

Any suggestions on customizing this game's combat system? It feels quite slow and our group doesn't have a lot of time on our hands for sessions.

Combat is the last thing to worry about in it. Maybe have one small fight every three sessions if you feel the need.

My only complaint about magic is that eventually you can skip the entire journey it's supposed to be all about with a teleport spell.

There isn't much to calculate and it's not like you have a long list of options to choose from.
