Because invariably they fall into one of three categories in every fucking setting that has them, and they're always assholes. I have the same issues with dwarves, and practically every other fantasy race out there.

I can give SOME props to Dragon Age and The Witcher for their portrayals of elves, but not much, because they still rely on these stupid tropes.

But God forbid you try to make your own races, or go human-only. That's like a prime sin in the world of fantasy. Not even GoT can change that.

Personally, I hate the kind of hippy attitude written to them. When they live in harmony with nature because they have magic power and look down on less privileged for not having magic powers. Ya'll motherfuckers need to understand some shit about Feanor, he was basically the best at everything but he was such a raging cock that wasn't good enough. He was an ungrateful shit that thought he was better than the Valar themselves even though his greatest creation just managed to capture the light of the Two Trees, which were made by the Valar. In naheulbeuk basically, everyone in more or less an idiot, at least to some point. More importantly the elves are especially stupid and even more so the wood elves. I mean, in the story the wood elves literally mainly do "pony brushing competition" and "strawberry gathering contest".

Bonus point for the whole: when the elf gain a level they gain a point of charisma and if the elf is female a size of breast (leading to one suffocating when she accidentally last hit an epic boss, gaining numerous level and dying in her tunic (not this one)

The problem with elves is that they exist to be proud. They are just slightly "more" than the average. More cultured, more beautiful, more intelligent. The ways they fail are in strength and brute force, but they compensate by looking down on the other races as brutes. Lore portrays everyone as just a little bit inferior to elves, and then says but no really work with these pricks, they cool. I like the Fair Folk idea of elves way better because they are not just haughty pricks, but haughty alien murderers. It justifies their pride as part of a complete disregard for mortals, rather than just making them the smug rich kids in the high school that all the races attend.

Best interpretation of elves I've seen was in a campaign where high elves were portrayed as being basically Antebellum era Southern whites. They were fancy and believed in thier religious traditions, and view humans more as confusing, fast talking, trendsetting rabble rousers and dwarves as weird foreigners. Wood Elves were basically black slaves and drow were deliverance styled hillbillies.
